center;">

Growing up we always hear comparisons of ourselves to our parents. My daughter started out looking just like her dad but now is looking more and more like me (she still has his blonde hair and blue eyes, though). I’ve always been told I look just like my mother and the older I get the more that seems to be true. I am flattered with the comparison because I think my mom is one of the most beautiful women I know!

Yet sometimes being compared to your mother, or feeling like you look like your mother, isn’t necessarily what you want. I heard from a woman recently who caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and gasped when she realized she looked like her mother. No matter what your mother looks like, that feeling that we have arrived at an age we will eternally think of our mothers being brings on a lot of emotions. While it can be empowering to have transformed into the woman you were meant to be, it can also be earth shattering to realize that we’re at ‘that age’ and aren’t really where we thought we’d be. While it was ok for our mother’s to look ‘old’, it’s not ok for us to, and feeling this way can certainly be a wake-up call.

If you’ve been feeling a little frumpy lately – or if you’ve been too busy to even think about it, here are a few quick tips for updating your look without the overwhelm:

1/ Your hair style– nothing can date you faster than your hair and makeup. Aside from the colors you wear, your hair is the first thing people notice about you. If your gray roots are growing in, giving you an unkempt two-tone appearance, you haven’t had a haircut in years or you’re sporting the same style you did in college, then get to the salon stat! I recommend Samuel Cole Salon (link to www.samuelcole.com) where they offer complimentary consultations and some of the most up-to-the-minute styling. Ask for Kristina to schedule your consultation or appointment and to receive the One Chic Mama VIP discount and star treatment.

2/ Your make-up – Makeup can work wonders to boost your image and help you look years younger. If you haven’t changed your foundation or your colors recently, now is a great time to re-evaluate what you’re wearing as well as your skincare needs. There are many great lines out there. I recommend asking a professional for a recommendation, or a trusted friend whose makeup you admire.

3/ Your Colors – If you’ve had your colors done recently, then you know what your best colors are and how to wear color to help you look more vibrant. If not, you may want to consider a color consultation to learn how to bring out your eyes, your hair and make your skintone look vibrant and luminous, just with the use of color. As you age, the pigment fades in your skin and certain colors that used to look good on you may now make you look washed out. Take note of how you feel when you wear certain colors and adjust accordingly.

4/ Your Clothes – Does what you wear age you? If you’ve been wearing the same clothes for years without any updates, then it’s time to bring your look up-to-date. Add in some fresh colors, get some new shoes and a new handbag (these 2 items alone can make a huge difference) and give your look a modern spin. Be foreward – DON”T go the opposite direction and shop in the juniors department. Looking youthful doesn’t mean looking younger. Find a happy medium in an age-appropriate look that flatters your body type and brings out your best!

5/ Your Attitude – Do you wake up feeling confident and vibrant each day? If not, try a little attitude adjustment. Start with some gratitude and list everything you’re grateful for. Do something new that brings a smile to your face, bust out of your routine and shake things up a bit. Being set in your ways is the fastest path to looking and feeling ‘old’ but the good news is that it can easily be changed. Try a new cereal, a new route to work, a new coffeeshop, and see how small changes can add up to a new perspective on your day – and your life!

Are You Looking Cute in Your Suit?

When it comes to business casual dress, it can be tricky to know what to wear. While your tendency may be to lean towards dark neutrals, I'd like to encourage you to mix it up a bit and add a pop of color. This poppy-hued jacket would be the perfect complement to a brown, tan or even black skirt and would help bring your look current in a flash.

You can find this look and many more work-appropriate items that are anything but boring at the Limited. This past week I had the pleasure of helping to kick off the grand opening of a brand new Limited store here in North Carolina. Triangle Towne Center now boasts a Limited and it is a lovely store. With many bubbly sales associates who check on you often in the fitting room and refer to you by name thanks to their modern fitting room complete with white boards on the doors, you're sure to get great service. But look out! This is great news because it means that those of you who have had striped tops in your closet for years are one step ahead of the pack. Yet you definitely don’t want to wear yours stripes in the same old way you always do.

One of the keys to wearing stripes (or any other timeless look that happens to be trendy) is to put a fresh spin on it. Ask yourself ‘what’s unexpected?’ and opt for a look that gives your old stripes a new lease on life.

Here are few suggestions for taking your stripes to a new level and helping you to look right on trend:

1/ Pair your classic navy striped top with a gorgeous pair of melon trousers and gladiator sandals for a look that says transcontinental chic. Sure, white jeans or pants would look great too, but the melon gives it a modern spin and helps you look up to the minute.

2/ Wear your striped cardigan with a long, flowing skirt in a similar color, then pop it with a camisole in a color that’s in direct contrast. This unexpected pop of color will kick colors such as mustard (that can easily fall flat when teamed with neutrals) up several notches and inject some energy into your look.

3/ Your orange striped top is already unexpected, but teaming it with a contrasting green skirt amps up your style IQ and gives you a whole new sense of playfulness. Add some orange platform booties for a contemporary look or opt for nude sandals to play your look down.

4/ A striped fitted tank gets revved up with a pink fishtail skirt that puts the spotlight on your beautiful legs. The green wedges are a bonus and bring a 3rd color into the combination for maximum attitude.

5/ Your wide navy top has never looked better than when teamed with turquoise jeans and mint flats. The play on color is fresh and understated, while looking oh-so-right.

Taking your stripes to a whole new level can be easy! Just remember, keep your stripes in proportion to your personal scale and you’ll look fabulous.

Email me at michele@onechicmama.com to set up a Find Your Style Inquiry session and learn how my StyleFinder™ System can help you to dress for who you truly are, in all aspects of your life. Your image works hard for you but it also needs a little assistance once in a while. Taking time out to refresh and renew your look can go a long way to helping you look your best season in and season out, without missing a beat!

When working with my clients it is my goal to educate and empower them to take their style into their own hands. Nowhere is this more essential than when it comes to maintenance. Once you have cultivated your sense of style and get your wardrobe to a place you love, you don’t just stop there. No, great style take ongoing attention and care to keep you looking chic and on-trend.

But where to start? If you’re just now pulling out your spring clothes and accessories and haven’t looked at them since last year, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. Here are five easy steps to help you get a handle on your wardrobe and spring clean your style:

1/ At First Glance – When pulling out your clothes from last season, what do you already know you want to toss? Instead of agonizing over that item bought on sale and trying to work it in, alleviate the guilt and stress and let it go now. You’ll feel liberated while making room for something far more wonderful to come into your closet. Also, take note of things you weren’t so crazy about last season but now you can’t wait to wear. They may become new faves!

2/ Go Window Shopping – Set aside some time to stroll through the mall or visit your favorite boutique and make a promise not to buy anything – just yet. This is your exploratory visit to see what’s new this season and get a feel for what you’re drawn to. Often the first visit to the shops to see the ‘new’ goods can result in some serious impulse spending, so hide your credit cards and making a vow to yourself that you’ll come back once you know what you really want. This will help to avoid some serious one-hit wonders, not to mention debt.

3/ Girls’ Night In – Pour yourself a delicious beverage, put on some great music and spend some time getting reacquainted with your spring clothing. Pull out your core items and see what you can mix in to create ‘new’ outfits. Try things in new combinations, mixing bold colors, prints and patterns in with your most neutral items, or adding an unexpected touch in your accessories. Flip through magazines for inspiration and then ask yourself what you’d really like to bring in that would work with what you already own. Make a list, set a budget and then make a date with yourself to buy those items that will pull your style into the new season and set you up for a spring filled with style.

4/ Accessorize – Often the best place to start boosting your wardrobe is with accessories. If you’re not ready to make any major investments yet, start by adding some inexpensive accessories that are on-trend to your most basic looks and see how much mileage you can get from something you already own. Put a fresh spin on an outfit by teaming it with a pair of brightly colored sandals, a contrasting belt or a necklace that kicks it up a few notches. Here is where you can go cheap and still get a lot of bang for your buck!

5/ Refresh Your Makeup – I encourage my clients to clean out their makeup drawers at the beginning of each season. One client even wrote me a note telling me what a difference that made for her! The simple act of getting rid of old makeup that she was ‘tolerating’ totally gave her a renewed energy and she felt great! Weed out what’s old, broken or no longer serves you. Make a list of what needs to be replaced, what new things you’d like to add and what you want to learn more about. New eye and lipcolor are a wonderful way to refresh your image for spring, but don’t forget your foundation. After a long winter you may need to reevaluate your shade, and even opt for a bronzer or shimmer brick to boost your glow factor. Then be sure you clean all your brushes and give them a once over too.

Your call to action:

Ask yourself what your favorite looks are of the season and what you can bring in to create them. Reassess your overall style and consider a new haircut or having your makeup done by a professional. Small changes can boost your style in big ways and leave you feeling great about you look!

Good luck!

xo

Want to discover your very own unique style and what colors look best on you? When you express an image that is authentic to who you are and is in harmony with what you do, you will naturally attract and resonate with your ideal clients, business associates and friends.

When expressed authentically, your image tells the story of who you are. In this day and age, personal connection is everything. When your image is in line with your business, your brand and what you stand for, it’s only natural that your image silently attracts those of like minds before you even speak a word. Upon meeting someone for the first time, we have less than 30 seconds to make a first impression, which often creates a lasting impression. Don’t you want to be remembered for all the right reasons?

Projecting a polished, professional image is not enough. People want to know who you are, what your values are, what your hobbies are and so much more. We’re a relationship-based society and your image can help to facilitate the right relationships and help take your business to the next level.

Just be you! But more than that, ideally you should create an image that is all you, taken to the next level. If you’re a casual, comfortable kind of gal, I’ll help you create a style that helps you to feel just like yourself, while looking polished and professional. Never again will you have to sacrifice comfort for style, or have to choose between looking business-like or wearing your sweatpants. Carrie Bradshaw and Imelda Marcos took this to the extreme, yet it illustrates a point. Women love shoes. But aside from simply falling in love with the sleek designs, sexy details and sophistication that the right shoe brings, there is a very good reason, why women need to have multiple pairs of shoes.

Shopping for shoes can be fun. Especially on those days where you’re carrying a few extra pounds and don’t want to admit to yourself that you might need to try a bigger size. Your shoe size will still be the same. And if the shoes are fabulous enough, they’ll take center stage, drawing attention away from those wobbly bits you’re none too crazy about and keeping friends intrigued.

But the real reason for so many shoes isn’t quite as apparent to most of us. However, after years of standing in front of the mirror for so long, debating whether or not a particular shoe works with an outfit, it hit me. Not only must the shoe complement the outfit, but it must create the perfect proportion with your skirt, dress or pants to seamlessly elongate your leg and create continuity. Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it? But the reality is that you can’t just have a pair of heels and a pair of flats and expect them to go with everything. So get over that fallacy and realize that each new pair of jeans, pants, skirt or dress may bring with it the need for a new pair of shoes. Here’s how to determine what shoes to wear with what:

1/ Let Color be Your Guide – When determining what color shoes to wear, often women default to black. I’ve done it too, but when I realized that black can often drag my look down I decided to opt for another neutral, a bright hue or a bold animal print. I talk a lot about bookending – wearing the same color shoes as your haircolor. This is a wonderful way to create harmony and to keep your look from being too visually heavy on bottom. If your hair is light, keep your pants/skirt in a light-medium tone and opt for shoes in a similar shade. You’ll lift 10 years off your look!

2/ Head over Heels – The length of your pants should dictate the shoes you wear. If you have pants that are a little long, wear a heel. For your pants that are on the shorter side, wear a flat. I encourage my clients to be consistent in the heel height of their shoes because it makes it easier to know where to have your pants hemmed. For your favorite pants, you may want to buy two pairs and have one hemmed for flats and one for heels so you cover all your bases. It’s great to step out in a higher heel at times, but save those for your dresses and keep your heels a similar height for your pants. Few things kill your credibility faster than wearing pants that are too short – or that drag the ground.

3/ A Weighty Matter – How visually heavy your shoes appear will affect your look. Your goal is to create balance and harmony, both in color and also in weight. If your personal scale is on the larger side then steer clear of delicate, dainty shoes which can make you look bigger by comparison. If you’re more petite, clunky shoes will only make you look bigger. It’s about repeating your personal height, weight and stature in the weight and appearance of your shoe.

So next time you’re tempted by a new pair of shoes, don’t be so hard on yourself. Just be sure you ask yourself what you’ll wear them with, if they’re the right height and if the style will help you to look your very best!

Take Your Wardrobe into Spring

While spring is still officially almost a month away, now is the time when I start wishing it were already here. Our winter has lasted all of about a day and a half, and with so many sunny days that just make me want to put on a pretty spring dress with a great new pair of sandals (haven't decided which ones yet) and go have a picnic with the kids or walk around the arboretum and see all the lovely flowers in bloom, it might as well be spring…

But whether it’s officially spring or not, it’s definitely not too early to start thinking about how to bring your wardrobe into spring. While transitioning your wardrobe into spring can seem like a big challenge, it doesn’t have to be. Adding in a few simple elements can work wonders to transform your wardrobe staples into a fresh look for spring. Here are some wonderful additions to begin adding into your wardrobe right now. They’ll have you humming…’it might as well be spring… too!

1/Polka dots – What more fun print can you add to your wardrobe than polka dots? Whether you’re daring enough to opt for a polka dot print dress or want to spice up your look in a more subtle way with a dotted scarf, handbag or shoes, you’ll be spot on for spring! Choose a classic combination of white polka dots on navy for a fresh look or the bold and contemporary combination of khaki and orange to give your look a chic twist. Tangerine Tango has been named by Pantone as THE color of the year. While that’s great news for all the autumns and some of the springs out there, that leaves many of us (summers and winters) out in the cold.

Orange is a brilliant color, bursting with energy and excitement! I personally love orange and have a favorite painting in my kitchen in this hue. Yet when it comes to wearing orange, I have to admit that this color really isn’t for me. Love it as I do, it really does nothing for my skintone and just completely washes me out.

I work with many women who are confused when it comes to color trends. After all, if it’s a trend, everyone should be able to wear it, right? WRONG! While there may only be one color of the year, there are multiple colors that are ‘hot’ each season. If the color of the year isn’t for you, please do not EVER feel compelled to wear it – period. Instead, turn your attention to some of the season’s other muses. The colors shown in the Pantone swatch are; Tangerine Tango, Solar Power, Sodalite Blue, Cabaret, Starfish, Margarita, Sweet Lilac, Driftwood, Bellflower and Cockatoo, and offer many wonderful alternatives to orange with just as much punch.

Cabaret, for instance, is a gorgeous shade for those of us with more cool coloring. I recently painted my office in this hue (more to come!) and love the blue undertones of this bold pink. Bellflower and Cockatoo offer gorgeous pops of color that would work well against most skintones and add a jolt of excitement to your basic black, white or other neutral.

If you do love orange and want to wear it, I recommend starting small. This color is rich and intense, and unless you have mocha skin or a killer tan, could wash you out if you’re not careful. Instead, ease it into your wardrobe little by little. An orange handbag. An orange tank layered under your favorite sweater for kick. Orange in your accessories. Then see where this color takes you. If you love it and it works for you, then let it become your signature color! If not, find something else that will be your personal color for the year and build your wardrobe around it.

My best advice when it comes to color and any other trend is to not let fashion dictate what you wear. Don’t ever wear something because you feel you ‘should’ but instead wear it because you love it! Learning to wear color with confidence can be easy and fun if you let it. The key is to trust yourself. Know what works for you and wear what makes you feel not just good, but great! It’s hard to believe I’m now in my mid-forties (time flies when you’re having fun!) but I certainly don’t feel it and am proud to share my age.

It’s not all I want to share with you. I know you want to achieve big things this year and I want to help you by sharing my expertise. I’ve been at this for a very long time and feel that my knowledge can help give you the confidence and the edge you need to succeed in business, in your relationships and in your life! I know firsthand that when you don’t feel great about how you look it’s hard to show up as powerful, beautiful, successful…it can really undermine your confidence and leave you feeling that you’re just not good enough.

I want more for you. I want you to hit the ground running and feeling confident and in touch with the beautiful woman you were created to be! Feeling great about yourself is so much more than superficial. It’s about being more connected to who you are, which allows you to be more present for those you love. It’s about tapping into what make you, well, you. The way I approach style is not about wearing specific labels, dressing to look like everyone else (or even anyone else) or spending more than you can afford. It’s also NOT about creating an image that is not all you.

This year is all about YOU and being the best you can be. No, it’s not about ego, so put that aside for now. As Marianne Williamson says, “There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.” When you are at your best you encourage others around you show their very best too. You shine like the beautiful woman you were created to be! There’s no better feeling than that of feeling confident, connected to yourself and empowered to be exactly who you are without apology. Yet it sometimes can seem so hard to know where to even start.

Can I share with you where your next steps to bringing out your very best for 2012 begin? I've put together 2 great packages that can help you look your best, whether you're here in Raleigh NC or on the other side of the planet. I want you to find your true style and use it to best advantage. But hurry, these prices are only good through January 11, 2012.

1/ Virtual StyleFinder™ Profile Package

Face Shape and Body Type Analysis

Personal Scale assessment

StyleFinder™ assessment

StyleFinder™ Elements of Style Cards

StyleFinder™ Blueprint

Book: Secrets of Style

Bonus: What to Wear seasonal ebook

**Bonus for the first 5 sign ups - a complimentary 30 minute wardrobe strategy call with me AND a copy of my book, Secrets of Style

Just $444 (Regularly $697)

Sign up here.

2/ Virtual Image Boost

EBook What to Wear: Top 10 Most Wearable Trends of the Season

Ebook How to Build a Wardrobe

Including checklists, worksheets and more

Personal Style Journal

Bonus: My latest book, Secrets of Style

Just $44 (Regularly $78)

Sign up Here.

I look forward to helping you take your style to new heights in 2012!

XO
Michele

Breakthroughs, Confidence and Clarity, Oh My!

As the year draws to a close, it's time to reflect on what your year was like. Did you have a major personal or professional breakthrough where you overcame a challenge that had been holding you back for years? Did your confidence kick in and help you to soar to new heights? Did you gain clarity on who you truly are and what you really want in life? My hope is that you experienced at least 2 out of 3. I know the clients I've worked with this year have. Here is just a sampling of the feedback I’ve received from my amazing clients just over the past week…

“Thanks so much for all the assistance! I feel more confident in wardrobe color selection and also am relieved that my black works for me. Your suggestions really helped me clarify ‘my best me’. “

“Thanks so much for a great image session yesterday. How exciting to begin the process of transformation! It was a treat to get your fresh perspective and I appreciate your very kind way of pointing me in the right direction on colors, styles, etc.”

“Huge breakthrough thanks to you...I have my confidence back and feel good from the inside - out. I am pleasantly surprised.”

They're taking their image and their lives to the next level and I couldn't be more thrilled! So I'd like to ask, what's next for you? Do you have big personal or professional goals for 2012? Would boosting your image, your self-esteem and your confidence help you to have an amazing year? Wouldn't it be great to step into a bigger and better version of yourself, inside and out?

Well, it's not only possible - it's affordable! At least for a limited time! Through Friday, December 15, I am offering my "Discovery" package that includes your color analysis, face shape, body type, personal scale and StyleFinder(tm) iD at almost HALF the regular price! This is the LAST time it will be offered for such a small investment and is a great opportunity to help you invest in your image and in yourself without breaking the bank.

Also, I've had do many clients asking about my Closet Clarity sessions that I've decided to extend my special pricing ($150 off regular price) through Friday as well. I think in my line of work the topic comes up often because I always recommend to my clients that they have a bra fitting. But what I've found has been eye-opening. I've heard from many clients and friends alike how disappointed they've been with many of their not-inexpensive bras, and how bras don't seem to hold up or wear nearly as well as they used to. So I've been paying close attention to bras and trying to discern which ones make the cut.

Well the Playtex Secrets® Cotton Shaping Underwire bra certainly got my attention, and for all the right reasons. First, this bra comes in some wonderful colors and prints that appeal to my whimsical nature. But honestly, that only gets a bra so far. What really got me is the comfort and the full-coverage. After having 2 kids, I'm a bit more full-figured than I used to be, and spillage is not good. This bra offers seamless, full coverage that leaves me feeling confident that there won't be any strange bulges or ill-timed wardrobe malfunctions. That alone is priceless!

But wait, there's more! This bra is lightly padded cotton, so it moves and breathes. It works perfectly under a tee shirt, but does just as well under business attire and no one is the wiser. All I know is that I feel comfortable and supported, while sporting a sassy bra that is my own little secret.

Win one for yourself!

We're giving away one Playtex Secrets® Cotton Shaping Underwire in the style and size of your choosing. Chances are this means you're uncovering those dresses you've had stored away in the back of your closet or shopping for new ones. While the search for the perfect dress that fits well, is flattering and appropriate can be quite an undertaking, what can be even more nerve-wracking is deciding what shoes to wear and how to handle the issue of hose.

Here are some important points to ponder when making your footwear selection. After all, you don't want to ruin a gorgeous dress with the wrong choice!

1/ While black is the obvious choice and the perennial classic, wearing black shoes are not always the best choice. This is where your personal coloring comes into play. Your haircolor dictates what is necessary color-wise to create balance, so take note. If your hair is quite dark, black shoes will fit the bill. If your hair is medium opt for a medium shade such as gunmetal or a vibrant bright. If your hair is light, opt for nude shoes or a lighter metallic, which can lend an air of holiday sparkle to even your most basic little black dress.

2/ Opt for shoes that won't visually weigh you down in terms of color or chunkiness. Opt for sleek, elegant heels, strappy sandals and feminine wedges. Skip the big, heavy heels and the clunky clodhoppers which will just look out of place and work against you.

3/ If you're wearing open-toe shoes, do NOT wear pantyhose. This look is just awkward and can rarely be pulled off with sophistication and ease. Perhaps Kate and Pippa can do it, but I don't advise others to try it.

4/ Ordinarily I would recommend wearing black hose with black shoes. However, if your coloring is more fair, this will visually weigh you down. If you have to wear black shoes AND pantyhose, opt for nude hose. Preferably, though, you'd do better to skip the hose altogether. Never wear cream or white hose. She told me more often than not the organizer would show up with one brown shoe and one black! Forget about fashion sense (okay, maybe not as I am writing this for Mary Michele’s blog!). This mishap made the organizer appear unprofessional and left a negative impression with the client. If you are organized you can avoid mistakes such as this that undermine your credibility or reflect poorly on you. Here are some suggestions:

It’s your closet so organize it how it makes sense to you! What works for your neighbor or co-worker may not work for you. Divide by business or casual? By color? By season? Once you have decided what works for you sort all your items clothes and accessories.

Once you have sorted, put all the items in a designated place; this is their “home.” Make sure you can see and reach all the items you need or they will likely stay there forever. If you need containers there are lots of options out there. I am a fan of repurposing what I have around the home. I took some pretty silver mesh filing trays I had and use them to store purses.

Personalize your closet to make it yours! I have a sign that says, “Believe in yourself” and a pink feather boa to remind me to have fun!

Sharing a closet? Give each person a side.

A few more tips:
• Store seasonal clothing and shoes under bed (feng shui advises against this, so perhaps an extra closet or attic) Repurpose blanket/bedding clear plastic containers to keep the dust away.
• Have lots of black & brown & navy? Use color hangers or reuse twist ties from bread to distinguish categories/colors of clothes.
• Keep your shoes in shoeboxes? Put pictures on the front so you don’t have to look through each box every time.
• Reposition/remove clothing rods to fit your needs.
• Use a bulletin board & pushpins to hold necklaces and make a pretty display.
• Gain space by utilizing hooks on the back of doors to hold scarves, belts, etc.
• Don’t cram everything in! Leave space for future purchases!
Finally, like most things in life your closet needs to be maintained. Set aside a few minutes daily (or 30 minutes at the end of the week) to hang things, put everything back in its place, etc. Go through your closet annually and let go of what you no longer love, doesn’t fit, etc. There are lots of worthy charities where you can donate and truly make a difference for someone who needs it!

Julie Seibert is the owner of Healing through Organization and was the first professional organizer in the State of North Carolina to specialize in being green. She is the 2011 Triangle Business Journal’s Green Entrepreneurial Effort/Innovative Idea of the Year Honorable Mention winner and was awarded the 2011 Green Award from National Association of Professional Organizers Los Angeles for Most Eco-Friendly Organizing Service.

What's Your Style Story?

Your style tells a story. It's who you are. Deep down, not just on the surface. At least when done right.

Which leads me to why I believe style is so important.

Style is an authentic expression of your true essence. It's who you are when no one's looking. It's your past, your future, your beliefs and your choices all rolled into one. Therefore, when you're expressing yourself authentically through your style, it just makes sense that those who find similarities in their own style are automatically drawn to you. Friends. Clients. Partners.

When getting dressed, think about what story your outfit tells. Sure, anyone can pull on khakis and a sweater. But it's what you add that makes it all your own.

That scarf you bought at the Marche aux Puces? Perfect.

The necklace that belonged to your great-grandmother? Absolutely!

The shoes you found at Nordstrom Rack on sale? Of course.

All three? Why not? As long as they are a true reflection of you, what you value and what you choose to express.

Your style is deeply personal. It's like the evil twin of fashion. Fashion is fickle by nature, ever-changing and rendering former versions of itself obsolete. Style is eternal, timeless and always spot-on.

You get to choose what your style says about you, your heritage, your life, your dreams, your desires, your regrets...

So what's your story?

Add and Subtract for Accessory Success

Math is not my forte. Never has been, never will be. Yet when it comes to adding and subtracting elements that create a fabulous outfit, I am an A+ student!

When I talk about an outfit that totally works and looks fabulous, I refer to it as being ‘greater than the sum of its parts’. What I mean by that is that the look, created from using seemingly simple pieces and highlighted with the appropriate accessories, seems to transcend fashion and is elevated to star style status. Yet achieving this can seem a little elusive. How to you know what will work with a certain outfit, and at what point do you reach overkill? To answer this I have created a simple strategy using a little, um, math. Yes, even though algebra left me feeling very challenged in high school I am not going to let a few numbers hold me back. I’m going to keep it simple, though, and stick with simple addition and subtraction.

To fully understand how a little math can help you to work wonders when it comes to accessories let’s start with a simple outfit such as dark wash jeans and a cute top, or even a simple shift dress. Then add in a cardigan in one of your best colors, a chic pair of shoes and a great handbag. From there, it’s time for a little jewelry.

First, define the look you want to create. Is it simple and elegant? Edgy urban? Feminine luxe? The good news is that accessories can transform your look and punctuate it to make a statement that is all you! So choose your them, then accessorize to your heart’s content!

Next, start with one piece of jewelry, say a great necklace. Don’t automatically assume that you NEED earrings with this. Too often I see women who are wearing a great necklace AND great earrings, but together there is no continuity, no harmony and the look is just overwhelming. If you do prefer earrings and a necklace, opt for pieces that complement rather than compete with each other. Then ask yourself what you could ADD to create a more unified look. If need be, skip the earrings or just wear simple studs. You want to take into account your personal scale and find accessories that are right for your stature and do not either overwhelm or get lost on you.

Then add in a cuff, a ring, a flower pin, a stack of bracelets, etc. This is where it can get tricky, but a little math will come to your rescue. With each addition, ask yourself ‘Is this piece adding or subtracting to my overall look?” When you spend some time playing around it will become evident how much is too much. If a piece is adding something to your look, it will appear ‘missing’ when you take it away. Your goal is to create balance and harmony, so continue adding until you feel that you’ve achieved balance. Don’t go overboard, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Adding too many items can often subtract from your look as a whole, but experimenting and finding that balance point can be useful in helping you know what to shop for as well as how to combine things easily.

Once you come up with a few combinations that you like, snap pics with your phone or your digital camera and refer back to them. This will make getting dressed effortless, and will help you to create outfits that are greater than the sum of their parts. You can so do this!

If you’d like to discover how to create a style that is authentic to you, email me at Michele@onechicmama.com to schedule a quick call that can change how you get dressed for life!

Image Enhancements through Plastic Surgery

Women will often go to great lengths to seek beauty advice, often without even realizing it. After all, we all want to look our best, and these days there are many ways to enhance beauty and improve style. In fact, every time you take note of a fashion model on a billboard, or flip through a clothing magazine, or even observe celebrities on the red carpet, you are probably taking note of different ways that other women enhance their appearances. Indeed, from makeup to clothing and everything in between, there are a number of ways to perfect your look. But have you ever thought of looking elsewhere for more complete, long-lasting changes? A quick visit to AboutPlasticSurgery.com may give you some new ideas that you never considered before.

Now, like many other women, you may think that plastic surgery simply isn’t for you. After all, the way that a lot of people talk about it, plastic surgery seems as if it’s reserved for drastic cases and dramatic changes. However, if you really think about it – what is so bad about having a simple procedure one time versus carefully applying makeup each and every day, or every time you go out? Besides that, there are a number of surgeries that can accomplish common goals in very subtle but effective ways. Here are a few worth considering:

o Facelift – A facelift can take years off of your face by essentially making your skin as tight as it was in your youth, getting rid of problems like forehead wrinkles or bags under eyes. This can save you a lot of cover-up!

o Breast Augmentation – Let’s face it, many women consider this at one time or another, and while there is no need to have large breasts to be beautiful, changing your shape or size may help you to feel better about your own personal image.

o Rhinoplasty – More commonly known as a “nose job,” a rhinoplasty procedure can effectively alter the shape and size of your nose to help you to gain a more proportional, or more beautiful face. This too is a very common procedure.

Of course, these are just a few of the many different kinds of plastic surgery that there are. However, a bit of research on these procedures can show you just how common, and how effective, they are. This is not to say that you should definitely go out and have plastic surgery – but, the next time you are considering your look, and how to enhance your beauty, you may want to at least look into these and other procedures.

Having Your 'Colors Done' Has a Bad Rap

Have you ever had your colors done? If so then you know exactly what I'm talking about. If you've never been privy to the experience, then you may be totally in the dark about what this means, so let me explain.

Having your 'colors done', or rather having a personal Color Analysis, is a process of determining your best personal colors based on your skin, hair and eye colors. While there are several systems out there, the system I use matches up your personal coloring to master coordinates. These coordinates are entered into a computerized program and your particular combination determines your personal color harmony, often based on the four seasons.

Now, as a style expert it is extremely clear to me why knowing your best colors is absolutely essential to looking your best. It's the first place to start, and just by changing the colors you wear (and ditching the black!) you can breathe new life into your style, make yourself look vibrant and alive and create a personalized look that brings out your best. Enough said, right? Yet over the years I have encountered more than a few skeptics when it comes to the color piece. After further discussion I have discovered that many women (and men, too) think that having your colors done seems hokey, primarily because of the way it was presented back in the 80's. I'd like to ask you to reconsider.

Read what my client, JJ Virgin, had to say:

"Honestly, I had heard about getting my colors done years ago but it always seemed a bit hokey and silly to me. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I know realize this is the starting point to building a great “success” wardrobe. Michele took me through the process of finding my 40 best colors and then showed me how to integrate my colors into my wardrobe and completely shifted my perspective. I understood why I gravitated towards certain items in my wardrobe and realized I’d wasted money on other pieces that just didn’t “feel right”. Had I only had this tool years ago I would have saved loads of money and time by not wasting both on searching for and buying pieces that just didn’t work for me. My color palette and checklist of basics makes shopping a breeze and amplifies my confidence on TV and the stage because I know what I have on is totally working for me. Thanks Michele!"

- JJ Virgin
Celebrity Health and Nutrition Expert, Co-star of TLC’s Freaky Eaters and author of “Six Weeks to Sleeveless and Sexy”www.JJVirgin.com

Having your 'colors done' became the trendy thing to do in the 80's. I remember clearly when my mom had hers done - she was a winter at the time - and had her own little color palette and just the 'right' makeup for her coloring. Color parties swept across suburban America like Tupperware parties and were a fun way for women to get together and learn about their coloring while trying new makeup. Wearing the 'right' colors became something that women thought was interesting but because of the presentation, many didn't take it too seriously. It was a fad, just like legwarmers and shoulder pads - one day it was here and the next day it was just a distant memory.

Fast forward thirty plus years later and having your colors done is something that, in my humble opinion, is absolutely essential to your image. Why? Several reasons. First, regardless of what you do during the day, wearing the right colors can boost your mood and your energy level. Color has the power to make you feel great - or make you feel drained. It can light your face up and make you look years younger. Knowing the right colors to wear can have a positive impact on your life from many aspects.

But also, in this day and age personal branding is tantamount to success. When you can create your Signature Style to help you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons, you create a look that is memorable. When your picture is all over Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. wouldn't you rather be known for looking fabulous as opposed to the woman in the unfortunate color combination? Often times our first introduction to someone these days is online and that first image leaves a lasting impression. Wearing colors that make you look your best can influence how much a person wants to get to know you/do business with you/refer you and can make a difference in your career as well as your personal life.

So if you've had a not-so-positive opinion about having your 'colors done' I'd like to ask you to reconsider. After all, the color you wear is one of the first things people notice about you, and you only get one chance to make a first impression.

If you'd like to learn more about having a personal color analysis and how to transform your style to be authentically you, email me for more information.

Does Your Wine Match Your Shoes?

Now that might be a funny question, yet when they're both from Salvatore Ferragamo, the answer just might be yes!

Flemings Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar just released its newest private label wine: Forty-Six Diamonds Toscana 2009. Actually, there are many ways to look great while keeping your bank account in check.

At the beginning of each season you want to do things to bring your look current. If you know anything about what I teach you know that I am NOT a big fan of going out and buying a brand new wardrobe each season. While there is a place for 'fast fashion' that is disposable by nature, I want you to think of your wardrobe as an investment that will last you for years to come. Once you have some great core pieces to start with (a suit, dark wash jeans, caramel trousers, items in your best basic colors) then you can do a quick assessment to decide what to bring in to help them look up to date. Each season there are a few small tweaks you can make to keep your look up-to-date, as opposed to dated, without spending a ton of cold hard cash. The small details make a big difference, so learn what’s in and get rid of what’s out. A little tough love in your closet will help you keep your wardrobe pared down and looking top notch, rather than drown in a sea of clothes you don’t like or never wear.

To start off, pay attention to the trends. Take note of women you see who are fashionable dressed, images you see in magazines or catalogs, and begin thinking about what look you'd like to create for the season.

Then take stock of what's already in your closet. Do any items need to be altered to fit you better or look more contemporary? Sometimes a minor alteration can produce major changes such as having that pair of jeans that drag the ground hemmed even if just 1/2". It can mean the difference between frumpy and fabulous!

I recommend that you create a LookBook of items you have in your closet already. Snap pics using your digital camera or smartphone so you have a quick reference guide. When shopping, refer back to these photos to know what will work in with what's in your closet right now. Then pull in a few items in some of the season's best brights (and your best!) to make your core items pop. Think tops, cardigans, a pair of bright trousers, a scarf and some great jewelry. Sometimes even just a little item can give you a lot of bang for your buck.

If you could only buy two items each season I recommend it be a fabulous pair of shoes and a great handbag. These can make or break an outfit and make a person look dated faster than anything else (except a dated hairstyle or makeup that’s not flattering). If you have a wardrobe full of core basics in solid colors, treat yourself to a great pair of wedges, booties or heeled loafers in a chic color (try either a nude or a bright). Invest in a great handbag – it doesn’t have to be a designer bag but select something stylish and chic. Try one in a bold hue or with a texture (your shoes and bag do not have to match, ever!). Then see how just these two elements bring a whole new perspective to your wardrobe!

*Crossed Moonbeams shoes $90 from Anthropologie. Yet what happened to being able to get a good-quality, well-fitting pair of jeans for a decent price? It seems like it's all about labels lately, but there's one label that has stood the test of time and that's Levi's.

Loved by people around the world, Levi's are the go-to jeans for many men, women and children - and with good reason. The were the pioneers in their industry, way back in the days of the gold-miner. So it stands to reason that Levi's, holding true to its roots, is still a pioneer in its industry. dENiZEN is Levi's new line created exclusively for Target stores that bring a line of fashionable AND well-fitting jeans at a very affordable price.

Crafted from premium denim, the dENiZEN line comes in women's sizes 2 - 18 (also men's and children's sizes) and are priced under $29.99. So if you've been debating whether or not to ditch your mom jeans and treat yourself to a new pair, wait no more!

Editor's Note: I received a pair of dENiZEN jeans for review.

Dresses for Every Body Type

In my opinion there is no easier item to wear than a dress and this season dresses are everywhere! With the seasonal palette including colors ranging from nudes and neutrals to eye-poppping vibrant hues, you're sure to find gorgeous dresses in all shapes and styles. But do you know which style is right for your body type?

Take a peek at my guide to buying the dress that will be the most flattering on you. Once you're armed with this important information, dressing will be a breeze.

Hourglass figures are very curvy with balanced hips and shoulders. The most important thing an hourglass can do is to find a dress that has waistline emphasis. Sack dresses are not for you. You've got the curves, now go flaunt them! Show off your shoulders in this bombshell halter dress and you'll show off your assets a la Marilyn Monroe, a classic hourglass figure.

Pear Shape figures have a smaller upper body with most of their weight in the hips, thighs and buttocks. Choose a dress that visually creates balance with a sleeve or high neckline atop a full skirt that gracefully grazes the body. Avoid sleeveless dresses because they'll create a visual un-balance and can emphasize your heavy bottom half.

Apple Shape figures have a larger upper body than lower half with little waist definition. Create the illusion of a slim waistline with a self-belt or tie in the same color as the dress, or simply a fitted column-style dress that elongates the body. A V-neckline draws the eye downward, creating visual balance.

Rounded body types have a large chest, a protuding tummy and fullness through hips. Choose a dress in a darker solid for a sleek, minimizing effect. An open neckline helps to elongate the body and a soft tie at the waistline gives the illusion of a defined waist.

When it comes to hemlines, forget about what's "in" and what's "out" and go with the most timeless, flattering length - knee length or slightly above. This shows off great legs and will make you appear taller. If you must go longer, take care to ensure your hemline does not hit at the widest point of your calf. It will make your legs appear shorter and longer.

Happy dressing!

Is Going Cheap Making You Spend More?

When you look in your closet what do you see? A thoughtfully planned wardrobe rich with investment items and peppered with those less expensive items that bring in a dash of style? Or do you see a hodge podge of items bought on the clearance rack at a department store, Old Navy or even Target, that don't actually go with anything? And they haven't been worn, like, ever. In fact the price tags are still on and you cringe every time you see that glaring $29.99 in red and think of how many lattes or fresh flowers you could have bought for that price (or even stashed away some of that money towards the $300 jacket you REALLY wanted).

Many women go shopping without any real goal in mind. You drift aimlessly from store to store in search of that 'perfect something', even though you have never defined what that is. Oh, you already know that you'd love to have those perfectly tailored camel trousers that could be worn 12 months a year and would go with just about every top in your closet, but they're $250 and that's way too much to spend on a pair of pants. So instead, you buy things to temporarily satisfy your desire but, like a craving for food, it never really does the trick. So you buy more to fill the void. You’ve overspent (much more than the $250 those pants would have cost) but all you have to show for it is a closet full of sale items that are just ok. Help!

Well, the good news is you're not alone. In my experience as an image consultant I see it all - the good, the bad and the ugly (so no need to be embarrassed). Most women don't grow up knowing how to build a wardrobe (yes, I said build - not just throw together) so we do the best we can. Trust me, I've been there. But instead of carefully planning out your wardrobe you end up with a random assortment of items that may (or in most cases, may not) go together. It can be an exercise in frustration to get dressed. But the worst part is how much money you throw away. When I show up at a client's home for a closet clarity session we get rid of all those items that don't suit them, don't flatter them or they just don't wear. My clients are often amazed at how many items they are able to let go of, but the biggest surprise is how much money they basically "threw down the drain" in items they never, or barely, wore.

Really, when you think about what you have in your closet versus what you actually wear, the truth might surprise you! When I leave a client's home after a closet clarity session, I leave with hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars' worth of items that will be donated to Dress for Success or other charities, or taken to a consignment shop (where they'll get back maybe 1/4 of what they actually paid for an item). So next time you go out shopping, think long and hard about what you buy. Because going cheap is costing you WAY more money than actually investing in a nice wardrobe would.

Here are some tips to help you plan your wardrobe and get the most bang for your buck:

1/ Buy items you truly LOVE and can't wait to wear. You'll relish each time you put them on and ensure that you get your money's worth.

2/ Do a cost-per-wear analysis - Figure up how long you might keep an item and how many times you might wear it during that time. For example, if you bought the $250 pair of pants and kept them for 5 years, wearing them 50 times per year, that's 250 times and comes out to be $1 per wear - a real bargain! Conversely, if you spend $40 on a trendy top that you keep for 1 season and wear 4 times, that's $10 per wear. Not such a bargain!

3/ When you buy something ensure that it goes with at least 3 items you already own (and wear).

4/ Learn your best colors and styles so you can be assured that you're buying what's right for you.

5/ Plan your wardrobe. I’m a big believer in creating a wardrobe strategy that supports you through days, weeks, months…When you look at your wardrobe as a comprehensive whole rather than just what you’re wearing at any given moment, it brings a new perspective to it and helps you to approach it more effectively. Working with an image consultant can save you valuable time and money. While it is an investment up front, the dividends will pay of handsomely for years to come! Invest your wardrobe dollars wisely and you'll reap the return.

Change your wardrobe and you can truly change your life!

Is Your Wardrobe Dragging You Down?

When you go to your closet to get dressed in the morning it can become an automatic response to just reach for the first thing you see that is clean, doesn’t need ironing or that you feel is appropriate for the occasion without even stopping to think if it’s what you really want to wear. If you’re not fashion-minded then getting dressed may be one of your least favorite activities of the day. You reach for the basic, yet somewhat matronly combination of black pants and a deep red jacket without a second thought, glad you don’t have to put any more thought into your outfit. Getting it done and moving on to the next task is how you approach it. But what if there was more?

When it comes to shopping and outfit coordination, many women would rather have a root canal than be subjected to the overwhelming selection of available choices. Double-breasted or single? Pleated pants or flat front? And where exactly should the hem of the pants hit? So many choices can leave an otherwise sane woman throwing her hands up and saying ‘just be done with it already.’ Her attitude is slightly defeatist and leaves little or no room for self-expression. What happens is that this approach leads to a closet filled with items that are ill-fitting, uninspired and - gasp - matronly. What if there were a better way?

When it comes to building a wardrobe, many women are so focused on the outcome that they completely miss the process. The result is that they end up with clothing that could just as easily be worn by their mother or any other woman give or take 20 years, yet it does nothing to bring out her best. It’s clothing and does its job, but little else.

Expressing oneself authentically, I’ve found, is essential in feeling connected to who we are. Just throwing on that boxy jacket in a color that leaves you looking ill is not doing anything to show off your assets and show the world what an amazing woman you are. In fact, the message it sends is that you don’t matter. Oh, but you so do! So let’s look at how you can approach your wardrobe from a different perspective to give you better results:

1/ Scenario – you have a meeting with an important client so you reach for your go-to suit. It’s black and boxy and something you’ve had for, oh, 10 or more years. You figure it’s a classic and never goes out of style, yet the high-rise, pleated pants with tapered legs and the long, boxy blazer visually add 15 pounds or more, wash you out and leave you looking frumpy. You show up feeling less than confident and disconnected with yourself. Client is not impressed.

Solution – You take stock of your current situation, looking at your body type (the way it is RIGHT NOW), your personal coloring (your hair is lighter than it used to be) and your lifestyle and set out to buy a suit that reflects who you are at this stage in your life. Your perfectly tailored camel suit fits you to a tee. Its classic styling is the perfect look for your office environment and you know it will be a go-to option for years to come. You mix in tops in your best brights to give it personality and bring color and light to your face. You take time to put on your personalized locket with pictures of your kids. You show up feeling fabulous and looking effortless. Client is more than impressed, asks to see your kids’ pictures and you two connect on a whole new level.

2/ Scenario – You have a wedding coming up for a distant relative. You really loathe shopping so you decide to wear the same dress you wore to the last family wedding 6 years ago, along with the same shoes, the same purse and even the same jewelry. You figure “It works, why not?” But what you don’t realize is that the dress was never flattering to begin with. Now it’s too snug, needs to be hemmed about 2” and with its navy floral print, probably isn’t the most contemporary choice. Family you haven’t seen since the last wedding will remember your outfit and think they’re stuck in a time-space continuum. You can’t wait until the wedding is over so you can take this outfit off.

Solution – Instead of going with a dated and frumpy choice that was so wrong years ago, you decide to show up looking sleek and chic. Wanting a dress that will wow, but will also offer versatility (you can also wear it to work with a cardigan or jacket) you opt for a simple and elegant sheath dress in a gorgeous shade of violet. Your style is classic, so you love that pearls are hot this season. You pile on several pearl necklaces to give your dress a punch and then opt for a great pair of gray snakeskin pumps to take your look to the next level. Family and friends you haven’t seen in years all tell you how amazing you look and ask if you’ve lost weight. You feel so fabulous that you dance the night away and are one of the last guests to leave. This wedding will be a very memorable occasion for all the right reasons.

I’d like to invite you to approach building and planning a wardrobe as a fun process that lets you express who you are and helps you to look amazing. When you have all the right tools and information, it can be broken down into a simple process that can easily be followed for years to come. And, dare I say, it might even become something you enjoy!

If you’d like to bring your wardrobe current and need to start with a great foundation, email me at Michele@onechicmama.com to discover how I can help you take your look to the next level.
