Whew, what a January! Between all the craziness of my normal routine, I'm so excited to have started a new job this past month. While I'm very happy with my decision to leave my past job, my knitting and designing time has been drastically cut (I had the amazing flexibility to knit and design when I wasn't busy which was a big chunk of my day!). I'm really trying to knit as fast as I can after bedtime and on the weekends. There are so many designs I came up with that I have charted...it's just a matter of sitting down to write the directions and knit them up.

As you all know by now, I love holidays and Valentine's Day is no exception. Here's the first of two Valentine themed dishcloths. I hope you enjoy it! =)

First WIP of 2013

Happy New Year everyone! I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season and 2013 has found all of you healthy and well. I know I've slacked on my posts during the month of December and there hasn't been a dishcloth pattern in what seems like forever. I'm working on some Valentine themed cloths and hope to have at least one of them out in the next couple weeks. In the meantime, I've found some fantastic scarf projects that I just had to share with you.

I found this "pattern" on Ravelry back in December and knew it had to be done immediately following Christmas knitting. How fabulous is all this color?!

The pattern is called "My Favourite Things" Infinity Scarf and can be found here. The term "pattern" is used loosely because this scarf is about creating something with all of YOUR favorite things. The pattern does, however, give some basic fair isle motifs and helpful links with tutorials on provisional cast on, kitchener stitch and stranded knitting.

As the author has done, I'll be using Vanna's Choice yarn. I've made more than a few runs to both Michael's and JoAnn Fabrics over the past few weeks (utilizing coupons, of course!) to compile these colors:

Beige
Magenta
Mustard
Eggplant
Rust
Kelly Green
Barley
Black
Sapphire
White
Cranberry
Aqua
Silver Grey

Even with 12 colors, it does take some planning to ensure that the colors are spaced far enough apart and the same color combinations are not used more than once (my own personal preference).

I've created some of my own charts, one of which is the palm tree chart below. I have another I'm currently knitting, so I'll post that once I know that it works as I hope it will!

I've completed 3 charts so far, about 8". I wish I had more time to work on this cowl...it's looking really fun!

The other scarf that has been a hot project on Ravelry is My Year In Temperatures scarf. The idea is to use the daily temperatures from your town to create this scarf. You only knit 2 rows a day, all year long. I'm using the leftover stash yarn from My Favourite Things Cowl to make this. I think can handle 2 rows a day and I'm really excited to see what the finished product will look like. I have cast on 35 stitches and I will be knitting the scarf in seed stitch. I think I'll post monthly updates on this one!

Decking the Walls

Amid all the Christmas knitting I'm trying to get done, I got the crafty bug. I was in Pier 1 and saw this fantastic wreath made of green tinsel with decorated ornaments. I had it in my hands until I saw the price -- no way was I going to spend that much on something I could turn into a fun family project. Here's how ours turned out:

Festive and colorful, right? Here's what we used:

Wire wreath frame

30' tinsel

Various ornaments & jingle bells

Floral wire

Hot glue gun

I started by wrapping the entire wreath frame with the tinsel. I secured it by tying it to the frame. Next, I used the floral wire to thread the ornaments and jingle bells together in groups of three. I attached in wire to the wreath frame, twisting it a bunch of times to make sure it really stayed on there. The ornaments had a mind of their own so I used a hot glue gun to keep them close together. The project cost me approximately $20 and was great fun for all of us!

I had a PartyLite party this fall and had a fantastic host credit. Lots of yummy smells and beautiful candle holders were purchased for virtually nothing! To tie the room together, I pulled out the Symmetry Trio and Cleary Creative Votive Holder.

I just love these candle holders! They are perfect for those who love seasonal decor and I love that I can customize them. For these, I used some floral picks that I cut and Loreli helped me arrange. I think it really brightens up our kitchen.

Now it's back to knitting! =)

Christmas Knitting

Today marks the beginning of the holiday season for me. All of my focus is now zeroed in on knitted gifts if I'm ever going to make the deadlines I've set for myself. Here's a couple things I'll be working on the coming weeks:

Shawl Collar Cowl by Purl Soho

This cowl was love at first sight! I knew exactly which family member would be the recipient and I can't wait to start it. Best of all....it's a FREE pattern!

Chic Cowl by Lauren Riker

I've actually made 2 of these already. I just love this pattern! The cable columns keep it interesting and the yarn is so fun! Red Heart Boutique Changes is what the pattern calls for -- I've used the grey and the blue already. The last time I was at Michael's I discovered Red Heart Boutique Magical. Basically the same thing, just with color changes as well as texture changes. This is another free pattern.

Yellow Brick Road by Mona Schmidt

This cowl is as versatile as it is functional. I may have to make one for myself after all is said and done! =)

Mediumweight Pullover by Hannah Fettig

This one might get a little tricky. The intended recipient has no idea that I'm making her a sweater, even though she has requested one for just shy of a year now. I'm relying on stealth elves to get me the measurements I need...cross your fingers for me!

Last but certainly not least is this cute little dress for my Loreli. She's such a girly girl and is devasted that dress season is over. I thought this would cheer her up plus it was just too cute to resist.

My list is lofty and ambitious but I'm fairly confident that I'll get it done.

FALL Dishcloth

This past weekend we had a true taste of autumn. Temps in the 40's, brisk winds and apple cider to warm us up while we hunted for the perfect pumpkins!

We're really lucky to have a great farm only a few miles away, Basse's. They have pick your own strawberries and raspberries in the summer and when fall comes they have an amazing Pumpkin Fest with tons of activities for the kids, a huge selection of pumpkins, hay rides, a haunted house, corn maze, apple cider, caramel apples and much much more. Did I mention the Pumpkin Blaster? Lots of fun for adults too!

Anyway, it's been awhile since I've posted a free dishcloth (or any dishcloth!), so here is an appropriate cloth for the season. The "A" in FALL is replaced by a leaf. Knit this up in wine, gold or forest green for a festive look. Enjoy, everyone!

Caribou Trails Turtleneck -- Sweater #9

I L.O.V.E. turtlenecks. Its a serious kind of love affair. But whenever I looked on Ravelry for a pattern, I just couldn't find what I was looking for. I wanted something thick and warm but with a little extra "something". Caribou Trails is what I came up with!

Caribou Trails is a top down turtleneck sweater with a twist…literally! A single cable runs down both sides of this sweater for a flattering look. A comfy, cozy fall & winter staple, this knits up quickly using bulky yarn.

First Frost -- A Cable Hat

I recently used Loops & Threads Cozy Wool for a couple projects and totally fell in love with that yarn! It really is cozy, warm and squishy so of course I wanted to design something with it.

I'm really loving cables lately. I'm not sure what it is about them, but I can't get enough! This is a great one for a hat -- easy yet intriguing and definitely warm.

So here is First Frost...a super bulky cable hat that will keep you cozy on those frosty mornings that nip at your nose and ears.

It is available in 4 sizes: Baby/Toddler, Child, Adult S/M and Adult L/XL.

To Fit: 17-18", 19-20", 21-22" and 23-24"

Spooky Eyes Halloween Yarn Wreath

It began with googly eyes...

Every time we ventured into Michael's, Loreli would find these googly eyes and ask if we could get them. I held off for awhile, but finally caved. Then I was left wondering how to utilize these really cute, colorful googly eyes.

Here's what I used:

Straw wreath (still wrapped in plastic)
Black worsted weight yarn
Loops & Threads Pom Pom yarn
Martha Stewart Tinsel yarn in Orange
Multi-colored googly eyes
Hot Glue Gun

Start of by wrapping your entire wreath with the black yarn. Some people get picky about doing one even layer, but since I knew that I would be putting a textured yarn on top of that first layer, I wasn't too concerned about it.

Next twist the tinsel yarn and pom pom yarn together, making one strand. I criss-crossed the yarn to create blank spaces big enough to fit the googly eyes.

Last, glue the googly eyes to the wreath with the hot glue gun. This is a really quick and easy project!

Chocolately Chocolate Chip Cookies

Birthdays are funny business. It's your birthday, but you are the one that supplies the treat to everyone else! =) I usually take the easy way out and grab some doughnuts on the way into work, but this year I decided that the treat I would bring would be one of my favorites: chocolate. Seems like my little Loreli takes after me that way also, even favoring the dark chocolate Hershey Kisses!

So with my helper at my side, we set off on this chocolate adventure. They turned out ridiculously rich and decadent and were gone in a flash. I'm glad we kept some at home to add to our lunches!

Ingredients:

1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup butter (1 stick), softened
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 package (18-1/4 oz) chocolate cake mix (I used Chocolate Fudge)
1 package (12 oz) chocolate chips

Directions:

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Add cake mix and mix well (dough will be sticky). Stir in chocolate chips. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Roll rounded tablespoonfuls of dough into balls. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees F for 9-11 minutes or until tops are cracked. Cool for 2 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks.

Makes 4 dozen cookies.

A Mickey Mouse Halloween Dishcloth

Here it is, the first fall dishcloth pattern! I have so many patterns I want to share this year, but this one is by far the favorite at our house so far. Loreli L-O-V-E-S Mickey, Minne and the rest of the gang...Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is one of her favorite cartoons. I have a sneaky suspicion that this cloth will end up in the bath rather than the kitchen sink!

Not at all scary and just fun, this cloth is perfect for gifting to households with young ones, or even the young at heart! The pattern is below, but I've also created a PDF version here to make it easier to print:

Park Ave Cardigan -- Sweater #8

This sweater is really my pride and joy this year. Based off a favorite sweater of mine that has seen better days, I worked this up off of trial and error. I wouldn't necessarily call it a pattern, but maybe more along the lines of pattern notes. It was made with Berroco Vintage DK, light-weight and machine washable -- a definite plus in our house! This cardigan has some waist and hip shaping for a more flattering fit.

Finished Measurements:

Chest: 37”
Arm Length: 21”
Length: 25”

Materials Needed:

5 skeins Berroco Vintage DK Yarn (1440 yards)
US6/4mm circular needles
US6/4mm double pointed needles
4 stitch markers
Yarn needle

Antler Cardigan -- Sweater #7

This was my very first test knit for a fellow Raveler and I loved it! This pattern will be included in a collection of patterns, Pacific Knits, by these two lovely ladies and I think I will be knitting a bunch of them.

This cardigan in particular is making me wish for cool fall days with brisk winds. I can't wait to wear this all day, instead of just for a couple quick pictures.

The cables are the easy yet elegant and add just the right amount of "something" to this cardi. This was a seamless sweater, besides the underarm grafting. Here are the details:

When I received the email from Knit Picks announcing their new line Preciosa, this pattern popped into my head as the perfect match. I made this scarf for my sister-in-law last Christmas and loved the end result -- which roughly translates to "I need one for myself"!

This colourway is an awesome combination of greys, white and just a touch of blue. It really does remind me of stormy skies!

I had purchased 2 skeins for this project, but only needed one. I had added a few rows of stockinette to the beginning but had I not done that, I would has used every inch of that first skein. Now that I have extra, I'm on the hunt for the perfect hat and/or convertible mitten pattern. Ideas?

We have ears of corn! I admit, I was definitely a skeptic about planting corn this year...I agreed to it just to please Shane. I thought we'd just end up with corn stalks for decorating come autumn, but I admitted defeat last night as we counted 7 -- yep 7! -- ears of corn. I think we have about 15-20 stalks. Loreli is posing by the smallest stalks at the edge of the corn rows:

We've been watering our garden every night throughout this summer drought and it's beginning to pay off. You can see the pumpkin vines crawling behind and past the rows of corn along the fence in the picture above. We had been thinking that everything was growing slower than last year but looking back at some photos from last year, we're pretty much on pace with everything but the pumpkin. There's plenty of flowers, I'm just not sure the bees are finding them!

The tomatoes were also flowering like crazy but it was only last week when these little guys showed up. I'm crossing my fingers the same will happen with the pumpkin!

Great Outdoors Dishcloth

As a kid, I used to camp all summer long at Girl Scout Camp. My mom was an assistant director for camp which meant we would bunk there all week long and head home only on the weekends. I loved it! Hiking, boating, singing songs, making new friends...it really is one of my fondest memories of my childhood. That was my inspiration for the cloths I've designed for the summer, one of them being the Great Outdoors.

This dishcloth is easy to knit yet holds your interest. The pattern it creates is awesome for scrubbing dishes! Solid and varigated yarns both look beautiful in this pattern. The pattern reminds me of honeycomb, hence the name! Happy Knitting everyone!

Supplies:

1 Skein Lily Sugar n Cream yarn
US#6 / 4mm needles
Yarn needle

Finished size approximately 8" x 8"

Abbreviations:

S1KW: Slip 1 stitch knit wise

S1PW: Slip 1 stitch purl wise

Instructions:

Cast on 54 sts

Row 1: *K1, S1KW*, rep from * to end of row
Row 2: *S1PW, P1*, rep from * to end of row
Row 3: K
Row 4: P
Row 5: *S1KW, K1*, rep from * to end of row
Row 6: *P1, S1PW*, rep from * to end of row
Row 7: K
Row 8: P

Repeat rows 1-8 (9) more times.

Bind off and weave in ends.

I Heart USA Button Pillow - Tutorial

I have a big love affair with buttons. I have a plastic bin full of them, all shapes, sizes and colors. Loreli loves playing with them too. She'll seperate them by colors among other creative ways only a toddler can think of! Now I've finally found a good use for them for me...button pillows! What a fun way to decorate your home and play with colorful buttons!

Here's what you'll need:

1 yd muslin
3 fat quarters or fabric remnants of red, white & blue
Buttons - red, white & blue
One 18" pillow form
I Heart USA Pattern (PDF)
Thread
Scissors
Disappearing Ink Pen
Sewing Machine

Start by cutting out the pattern pieces from the I Heart USA Pattern PDF. Using the pattern pieces, cut the fat quarters in the specified colors. I wanted a tight-fitting pillowcase, so I cut my muslin piece 18.5" wide by 36" long. I traced the heart outline onto the muslin, just making sure everything would be centered.

Sew the pieces onto the muslin. I did not leave any seam allowances, therefore the raw edges will be visible. I think the frayed edges add a little rustic feeling.

Start sewing those buttons on! This process actually took me about a week. I would only do a couple stripes each night.

Fold the muslin in half lengthwise with right sides together. Sew the sides together and about 1"-2" at the bottom, leaving a wide opening to fit your pillow form in.

Stuff (and I mean STUFF!) your pillow form into the pillowcase. Slip stitch the opening closed.

Voila! Your button pillow is complete and isn't it fabulous?!
