I haven’t seen the new Smurfs movie. I will watch it, although I know I’m not going to like it. I don’t know why the entertainment industry insists in ruining our childhood memories.

I used to love the Smurfs. Actually, I still love the Smurfs. I don’t know why, but I always thought they were really cool, and the TV series they had in the 80’s was the best of the best. Of course, it’s been a long time, and I haven’t seen the Smurfs for years, which is why now I am nostalgic about that better more fun period of my life.

I was recently looking for a vintage Smurf puzzle I used to own owned by Milton Bradley. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to find. It’s like 1983 never existed on the internet. As I’m pretty frustrated about that, and I want to reminiscent about these little blue devils, I thought that re-watching the TV series will be on my list for this year. Can you believe they made 9 seasons of the Smurfs? Nine! It looks like only two seasons are on DVD. If you’re interested, you can start with season 1, and buy The Smurfs Season One on amazon. Amazon has a few more seasons on Instant Video, but how I wished I could own the full smurfs series on DVD.

Alright, here comes Gargamel, so now I need to go.

Sucker Punch - two-disc extended edition

This blog is purely about things I like and own, or wish I owned. In this case, it was going to be about Sucker Punch: The Art of the Movie by Zack Snyder. However, that book is hard to find nowadays, and if you find it, it’ll be expensive.

Why Sucker Punch? well, I didn’t think it was a great movie. I didn’t hate it, but something I really really like is that it was 100% eyecandy. No matter if you like the story or not, you can’t deny that the visuals where pretty nice (although some of the cg effects were extremely bad, the concepts, art and style were excellent).

So, yes, Sucker Punch is not really a masterpiece, but it’s entertaining. It’s one of those movies I’d own on Bluray if I owned a Blue-ray player and hd tv (well, my PS3 plays blu-ray discs, true, but I still haven’t bought and hd tv).

Anyway, if you liked Sucker Punch and you still don’t have it in your collection, buy the Sucker Punch two-disc extended edition from amazon and let me know if it’s any good.

UCO Stormproof matches

I’ve never been in a life or dead situation where my life depended on lighting a fire; but now I know that if I were to go somewhere where that sort of situation might be a possibility, then I’d go with some stormproof matches.

Those things are insane. It’s not like they work in harsh conditions under a lot of rain. No. This things literally keep working underwater. It’s not like you can light a fire underwater. What I mean is that you can put a match underwater, then get it away from it, shake a bit, and the fire will still be there. It sounds a bit unbelievable. I wouldn’t believe it if somebody told me that, but go check the video in the amazon page for the stormproof matches (scroll down, it’s a reviewer’s video).

I’m fully convinced now, so I might even buy one of these soon.

Animation–The Archive Series

I have so many good memories of watching those old Disney animated movies. I loved them, and I still do.. The Little Mermaid, Dumbo, Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, and many others, I think I know them like the palm of my hand.

And all those movies where such an inspiration to create, draw, and figure out how the magical world of animation works. Say what you want, you may not like Disney “style”, but you can’t deny that it inspires and still inspires a lot of kids to start drawing and creating art.

Anyway, if you are like me and love everything related to the art of animation, specially Disney animation, then this is a book you must own.

It’s a big book, mainly focused on the character art and animation. It is filled front to back with animation drawings from Steamboat Willie to The Princess and the Frog. You get to see a couple of the rough drawings for each movie Disney did between those two others I just mentioned.

It consists of animation drawings with no backgrounds and almost no text (unfortunately, because sometimes I wish I could know more about them). There’s an introduction by John Lasseter (think Pixar), and a ton of animation drawings that will keep you amazed.

I’m not a salesman, I’m just posting about the things I love and own, or things I love and wished I owned. I own this book, and it’s one of my favorites from my collection of artbooks. I think no matter what, if you buy it, you will love it.

Cable organizer

Cables here, cables there, cables anywhere. You can’t escape them and you’ll see them everywhere.

There are several solutions to help with cable management. This Quirky Cordies Desktop Management accessory is one of them. I like it a lot, although I prefer the black version, but the white one is just as useful.

It’s one of those things that are really simple, but can help a lot in bringing some peace an organization to your messy life, even if you’re a yoga addict, or spend all day watching yogi on your fifty year old black and white tv.

You need a pocket knife

Let me tell you something. Once you start carrying a little pocket knife everywhere you go, your life changes. When you are without it, you realize how much you need it.

There’s always a situation where you need to cut something, or need to open a package, or a bottle, or cut a piece of paper, or do some little repair on some little gadget.

Don’t think it twice. A small pocket knife is something you can attach to your key ring. It won’t use more space than your keys, and you’d hardly notice you’re carrying it (unless you need it, or unless you go through an airport, where they will confiscate it).

Anyway, The Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Pocket Knife is a good option. It’s very small, and has the basics (small blade for cutting, pair of mini scissors, and plastic toothpick). As its name states, it has the classic look of Victorinox pocket knives, and I personally think it looks awesome in black (although you can also get the red version, as well as in pink, yellow, hunter green and a bunch of other colors).

It’ll cost you about 12 bucks, which is nothing nowadays, specially for the little benefits it brings.

Now, to tell you the truth, I don’t have or use this little pocket knife. I prefer the Leatherman Micra Multitool (I like the layout a lot more. I use those scissors a lot), but it’s a bit more expensive, so if you’re buying your first edc pocket knife, I think either the Leatherman Micra or the Victorinox Swiss Army Classic Pocket Knife are good options.

Nintendo Entertainment System

I mentioned a nice little portable gadget to play games yesterday, and today I was thinking about the good old days of gaming.

I’d love to play games in my Nintendo Entertainment System (which I remember only as “Nintendo”). Mine still works, but it’s gathering dust somewhere. I should connect it and play Super Mario Bros 3, which probably is my most favorite game of all time (I still play it from time to time in my Gameboy Micro ).

As this site is mostly about ebay deals, then let me mention this right now: you can get the NES and all three Super Marios for $89. I think that’s a decent deal. Maybe you only want the console without any games, and if you prefer Amazon, then you can get the NES from there for about $50.

Dingoo A-320 game console

I don’t own one of this Dingoo game consoles, but for what I’ve read, they are great. Don’t expect it to last forever, but expect to have lots of fun with it while it works.

It’s basically a gameboy emulator. You can load tons and tons of (legal) roms of your favorite gameboy games, so you can play them anywhere and at any time.

It has 4GB of internal storage, and a built-in mini-SD slot supporting up to 8GB cards. That’s 12GB total. It plays AVI, FLV, MPEG, MP4 videos, among others, and it can play mp3 files. It has a FM radio, and you can also use it to browse images.

Overall, it sounds like a pretty cool device. It does a lot more than the original Game Boy Micro.

I think I’m going to get one (probably from amazon though. You can get the Dingoo Digitial A-320 A320 Emulator Game Console for $114.50 over there), but if you want to save a few bucks, you should try ebay. There’s quite a few auctions there You should be able to get one between $80 to $100.

If you buy one, let me know. And if you already own one, leave a comment here telling us what you think about this gadget. I think it sounds a little too good to be true, but for what I’ve read, it seems the device is good.

UPDATE: you might want to wait if you want to buy this little gadget, as it seems they are releasing a new version: the Dingoo A380. If you are interested, check out the video review from someone that already has the Dingoo A380.

The Little Mermaid–Disney Sketchbook

Once upon a time, there was a book published in 1938, called Walt Disney’s Sketchbook of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (which you can buy from ebay for about $1800). Disney published that book as a way to establish the copyright of this Disney movie before its release.

After a lot of years, Disney thought it’d be cool to publish a series of books featuring sketches of some of our favorite Disney movies. And so, with the help of Applewood Books, the Sketchbook series was born. The books were printed in a very limited number, as they were made as a collector’s item, not aimed to the general public. As far as I know, there are 6 sketchbooks edited by Applewood: Bambi, Peter Pan, Lady And The Tramp, Sleeping Beauty (the most expensive and hard to find from them all), Toy Story, and my favorite: The Little Mermaid.

It’s a wonderful series, but it’s very difficult to find these books nowadays. There are very few options. The Peter Pan sketchbook is being sold at ebay for $900 (would you pay almost a thousand dollars for a book?) or at Biblio for $439.95, which is still very expensive, but at least it’s a better option.

The Bambi Sketchbook is the most common. If you find it, it’ll probably won’t cost more than $40. I found one at Biblio for $30.

The Little Mermaid Sketchbook is very cool. You can go see a review (with a few photos) at parkablogs forums to get an idea of what you’d get if you buy the book. Unfortunately, this is also a rare hard-to-find book. There are a couple of Walt Disney's Little Mermaid: The Sketchbooks Series being sold at Amazon for $575 and $400. I remember that they used to be $300 a few years ago (and I was lucky to get it for about $130), so nowadays, $400 is probably the best deal you can get. I love the book. It is, afterall, one of the few books you can get featuring the art of The Little Mermaid, so if you have the money, buy it, you won’t regret it.

Art of Mulan

Hey, I like art books, what can I say? I like them. It’s nice to know a little bit about the behind the scenes of animated movies.
One of the art books that I’d like to get and still haven’t bought is the Art of Mulan (which is hard to find for cheap nowadays). Maybe I’ll buy it from ebay for $49, although I’d prefer to buy it from Amazon (for some reason, I trust Amazon more than I trust ebay). I can get The Art of Mulan at Amazon from $45 which is still a bit cheaper, and I’d have extra $4 to spend in whatever I wanted (maybe a couple of milky ways or other chocolate bars).
Anyway, I have to admit that Mulan isn’t my favorite animated Disney movie, although I enjoyed watching it. It was funny and interesting, and the artwork was different from what Disney used to do at that time. Also, Chris Sanders was co-head of story and screenwriter, and I’m a big fan of him.
Anyway, The Art of Mulan seems like the typical Disney artbook, which isn’t a bad thing: it shows some nice rough concept art, drawings and final art for the main characters of the film, they tell us the story about the art direction, and show a bunch of the background paintings, and other little fun facts about the movie. All in all, I always enjoy these type of books, so it’s one I’d like to get. I mean, why not? right?

The art of the little mermaid, part 2

Someone uploaded a cool little video showing The Art of the Little Mermaid book, page by page. That should give you a pretty great idea of what you’ll get if you decide to get that tiny little book.

I posted about The Art of the Little Mermaid book a while ago, and it’s one of my most popular posts, so I decided to give it a part two.

Let me tell you something: the book is tiny, and doesn’t have a lot of concept art, or a lot of text either. It’s mostly a collector’s item. You’ll probably be disappointed with it unless you’re a hardcore Disney’s Little Mermaid fan.

In the previous post, I suggested ebay as one of the best place to buy this little and rare book, but nowadays, it sells from $75 to $224 over there, which, from my point of view, is too much to ask for that book.

I searched again, and I’m convinced the best option you have right now is to get it from amazon. Check out list of sellers for The Art of The Little Mermaid. It looks like the cheapest price is $58.82, which still seems expensive, but it is your only and best option.

If you want to find a book that has some cool concept art of The Little Mermaid, I think this is a way better option: Walt Disney's Little Mermaid: The Sketchbooks Series. It’s a sketchbook, and it’s also mostly for collectors only, but it’s a way nicer book than that other tiny one. The art in it is bigger, although it doesn’t have too many pages, no text, and will leave you wanting more, but it’s a beautiful book. Of course, it’s expensive: $289 is the cheapest price they are asking for it.

Finally, I also suggest you buy The Art of Tangled. I don’t own it yet (should arrive in a few days), but I’ve read a lot of good things about the book. In few words, I’ve heard it’s an amazing book. Of course, it’s not The Art of The Little Mermaid, but still features art by the wonderful Glen Keane

Vintage Dukes of Hazzard metal lunchbox

I used to have a Dukes of Hazzard metal lunchbox when I was a kid. And it was indestructible. You could even hit people in the head with it, and nothing happened to the lunchbox (believe me, I tried that). This thing was built to last.

I think that nowadays, one of these lunchboxes would be a great and cool storage box for cool valuable things. Whatever. I just think they are cool. Probably because I want to believe I was cool for having one when I was a kid (but everybody had one as a kid anyway).

They are kind of expensive on ebay, as they sell for around $80. That’s sort of crazy, so it’s yet another one of those things I want, but I’d probably never buy.

Nirvana was (and still is) one of my favorite bands. Weirdly enough, while I have almost all their discography in cd, I don’t have them in my ipod. Maybe I should, right?

Today’s thing is oldschool: one of Nirvana’s most famous albums (their second studio album, released in 1991), as a vinyl LP. You know, those weird black circles that had music in them. They did existed, before cds. Probably your grandfather had lots of them. Anyway, I think this item is really cool. Vinyl LP’s just are. They make you look like you really love music and know a lot about it. I’m guessing that you can’t consider yourself an expert music listener if you don’t own vinyl albums, right?

Atari 2600

For me, the Atari 2600 is the best gaming console ever. Probably because it was the only one I had when I was a kid in the 80’s, at least until before we got a Nintendo NES.

This comes from an era where graphics weren’t the only thing gamers care about. The games were sometimes simple, but very innovative. And above all, you really had to use your imagination to believe that a couple of dots represented huge evil monsters.

I think I might connect my old Atari again and play some of those games (I wonder if it still works). I remember I used to play PAC MAN for hours. I was really good at it, escaping from the evil ghosts.

Anyway, if you also want to remember the good old times, then go buy one of these vintage gaming consoles. I’m pretty sure that you’ll love it more than a playstation 3, if you’re a real kid of the 80’s.

You can get an Atari 2600 with three joysticks and 54 games for $150 (over here) and then buy 30 more games (starting at $9.99). Here’s another auction for the game console with a couple of games, including E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, which a lot of people think it’s the worst game ever, but I absolutely loved it. It was weird and didn’t make sense, but it featured E.T.

If you want to be the cool dude with the cool gadgets, you definitely want to get the wireless remote control joysticks for the Atari 2600 as well (wireless!! really, I’m not kidding, I had a pair of wireless joystick for the atari, too, and they really worked. Me and my brother used to play from outside of the room, just because we were so impressed you were able to control the game characters with no wires. It was awesome!). Get them here for $44.99, or over here (starting at $11).

Avatar movie poster

Today’s daily thing is nothing outstanding, but it’s a pretty cool thing.

I really enjoyed James Cameron’s Avatar. I went to see that movie a couple of times. Actually, most people I know went to see the movie and loved it.

So I thought, why not a poster of the movie? It’s just $7.99 so it might be nice to own one (not me, I’ve spent too much money the last 6 months).

I’d actually would like something other than the movie poster. As I love books, I might get the The Art of Avatar book at some point (only $19.77).

Back to the Avatar poster, this is something cool: Avatar Cast Signed Movie Poster. It’s autographed by James Cameron, James Horner, Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, among others. Isn’t that cool? Of course you’d need to spend $900 to get it, so you’d really need to be a hardcore fan of the blue aliens movie.

Actually, if I were to spend money on autographed stuff from the Avatar movie, then maybe I’d spend about $60 for an autographed photo of Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, or maybe, just maybe, an autograph of James Cameron for $199. But really, two hundred dollars for a signature? Would you really spend that kind of money for a signature? I’d probably never do that.

Chris Sanders sketchbook

Today, a sketchbook, a cool sketchbook by Chris Sanders, the director of Lilo & Stitch and How to train your dragon. It’s full of cute monsters and animals, and drawings of good looking girls. Animals and pin-ups, that’s what this sketchbook is about.

These type of self published sketchbooks by well known artists are rare, as they usually are printed in low quantities (some times between 500 and 1000) and are sold only on comic and art conventions. Then they become hard to find items, and the only way you can get them is on ebay.

Nineteen eighty four, a novel

Book Monday. Yeah, I think that’s how it’s going to be from now on.

What do we have for today? a book, of course, by George Orwell. This is probably his most famous and iconic novels. A must read (although I have to admit I’ve never read it, but that’s why I’m listing it…I’ll read it…soon).

The reason I always remember and want to read this book is due to Apple’s 1984 Macintosh commercial. I don’t know if that commercial has or hasn’t any relation with the book’s plot (it seems it does), but it’s what made me aware of the existence of this book.

Anyway, some more info about the book, directly from the Wikipedia:

Nineteen Eighty-Four (984), published in 1949, is a dystopian novel about the totalitarian regime of the Party, an oligarchical collectivist society where life in the Oceanian province of Airstrip One is a world of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance, public mind control, and the voiding of citizens' rights. Today, a 3D Camera

It seems that everyone is talking about 3d in movies. Some companies are already thinking about consumer 3d tvs. ESPN and other networks have plans to launch 3d television networks. It looks like looking at things in real life won’t be the only way to appreciate the world in three dimensions.

I was looking for some options in the photography field to be able to take 3D pictures. One (maybe) cheap option is the Nimslo camera, a stereo camera that produces 3D pictures that can be viewer without glasses. It uses standard 35mm film. There are several auctions on ebay for this camera model: starting at $9.99, $5.00, $9.99. The instruction book is also on sale (for $12.00) or you can see it for free here.

Other options are the Nishika N8000 ($10.99) or the N9000 ($10.95). A bit of history: when the Nimslo company went bankrupt, it was partly sold to a company named Nishika.

My favorite option for a 3D camera would be the Holga 120-3D (options at ebay: $108.69 or $88.99), made by Lomography, which has a cult following due to all of their “toy” camera models.

Finally, if you already own a digital SLR, you could get a Loreo 3D lens, or a SKF Stereo kit. They are about $100 each, so for those prices, I’d prefer to buy one of the other cameras mentioned above.

I almost forgot: another digital option is the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 (small review here).

That’s it for today. I actually learned a lot about 3D cameras today while researching for this post, and I’m already considering buying one (as I said, I’ll probably go for the Holga 120-3D, or any Lomography camera)…I just have to find some time to play around and take photos.

An hourglass

I don’t know why, but I’ve always been fascinated with hourglasses. Using sand to keep time is genius. It looks so simple, yet so efficient. According to the wikipedia: “Hourglasses were the first dependable, reusable and reasonably accurate measure of time.”

Besides, I find it very entertaining to watch sand fall to the other side. I must have a simple mind, or simple things make me happy.

I thought they would be more popular on ebay, but apparently they are not. I think the one pictured on the left is a cool model, but most of the hourglasses you can find on ebay are plain ugly. And here I thought ebay was going to be the perfect place to find a really cool vintage hourglass.

Roman Holiday

I love those vintage movie posters. They don’t make them so nice nowadays.

Roman Holiday is the 1953 film that made Audrey Hepburn a big Hollywood star. Amazing, considering it was her first movie made in Hollywood. Even more amazing if you consider that she won an Oscar for Best Actress thanks to her role in that movie.

So, I thought having a poster of this great movie (part of movie history) would be a nice idea. You can either go for the movie poster reproduction, for $3.99, or the real thing for $1400. Wow, that’s a lot of money for a poster…

I’m planning to watch the movie this week. I’ve actually never seen an Audrey Hepburn movie, not even Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which is probably Audrey’s most iconic movie. I did see a few clips of Roman Holiday at youtube, and have to say the movie looks quite cute (and Audrey Hepburn looks astonishing in it). If you want to watch it, and own it on dvd, then go for this auction here, or just buy it from amazon for $9.98.

Man, I hate it that I sound like a salesman writing this blog, but it is about things I found at ebay afterall, and somebody should buy that stuff (I’d buy everything if I had the money).

Oh, by the way: would you pay $17500 for an original italian movie poster of Breakfast at Tiffany’s? If you have that kind of money to spend in a poster, then I guess you won’t mind sending a couple thousand dollars my way? Thanks!

Tin Man and stuff from the Land of Oz

If you’re a fan of Zooey Deschanel, or if you enjoyed the reinterpretation of L. Frank Baum’s classic “The Wizard of Oz”, then you already own the 2 disc collector’s edition of Tin Man, don’t you?

I wish I had the money to buy the first edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but $4500 for it is just too much for it. Although I’m rethinking it, if I had that kind of money to buy anything I wanted, I’d buy something more useful.

This is a tiny book, really tiny. It’s not like those big art books you find for other Disney movies. Nevertheless, it is a really cute book, with nice art from the Little Mermaid movie. It’s pretty rare to find it nowadays, so it’s a good deal.
