Here’s an amazing portrait of Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, done almost entirely in type. It was created by Dylan Roscover. The portrait is formed by the text from Apple’s, Here’s to the Crazy One’s ad campaign of the 90’s, and it uses fonts found in Apple branding and products. The image above is just a slice of the portrait, I recommend checking out the full size version to really appreciate it.

I just love this illustration of Spock for the May, 2009 (limited edition) issue of Esquire Magazine. It’s by famed illustrator Noma Bar. His work is really wonderful.

I can’t find a site for Noma, but you can see more of his work by doing a Google image search. He also has a book available at Amazon.

I recently discovered that After Effects (CS3) wasn’t deleting it’s Media Cache files when I quit the application. The folder had swelled to 6.19 GB.

I’m not sure if this is a bug in CS3, or if all versions of AE suffered from this problem. But, if you’re an After Effects user you may want to make sure you haven’t (unnecessarily) lost some drive space. On a Mac, the folder is located at ~/Library/Caches/Adobe/After Effects CS3/Media Cache Files. You can either manually toss the content of the folder, or you can open AE on go to the Memory & Cache preferences and click, Clean Database & Cache.

Woohoo! On May 7th, 2009 the US Postal service will start selling Simpsons Stamps.

“This is the biggest and most adhesive honor The Simpsons has ever received,” said Matt Groening, creator and executive producer of The Simpsons.

You can actually pre-order the stamps now, but I just tried and the online store seems to be having some technical difficulties at the moment. I’m sure they’ll have it back up and running soon.

I first heard about the BumpTop prototype back in 2006. It looks like they’ve refined it quite a bit since then… to the point where they’ve released it as an actual product. There’s a (limited) free version, and a Pro version that runs $29. Unfortunately, there’s no Mac version at the moment, but there is a little checkbox to let the developers know you want one, on the Downloads page.

I couldn’t agree more. I learned a long time ago the higher up you go in any organization, the less technically-savvy the people become. I love how the Executive Creative Director only knows how to do email. (That’s the Microsoft Entourage (Mac) icon for all you PC people)

There’s actually another lesson i learned many years ago that directly relates to this… the higher up you go in any organization, the crappier their computers become.

I remember several years ago I was working for a company that was doing a big pitch to Amazon.com. The person behind the project was convinced that the Amazon Executives we would be dealing with were very “sophisticated” people, who would have all the latest equipment, and well-versed in how to use it. He decided that our web component should be built at 1024×768, which at the time was considered high resolution. After we sent everything off, we got a call from an Amazon VP who was having trouble viewing the site. It turned out he was using a 640×480 16bit display. Of course, he had no idea that’s what he was using. We had to guide him though checking his monitor resolution over the phone.

I remember another time where we sent a CD-based presentation to the owner of a medium-large size company. When we got him on the phone he said he hadn’t looked at the CD because he didn’t know how to put it into his computer. His secretary normally took care of “computer stuff”, and she was on vacation.

Lessons learned. :)

Lets face it, most TV commercials pretty much suck. But, once in a while, one comes out that’s a real gem. This commercial for the Sprint Now Network is a perfect example. It’s extremely well done, and it actually made me laugh out loud when I saw it on TV tonight.

The commercial was produced by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, here in San Francisco. They’ve also built a pretty interesting website to go with the campaign.

I was watching TV last night and saw a Jack in the Box commercial that was sporting a brand new logo. Apparently they’re going through a complete rebranding, that will include redoing the look and feel of the restaurants. If you can’t quite remember what the old logo looked like, here’s a side-by-side.

I’m not sure how I feel about the new logo. I kind of like it, but it just doesn’t feel like Jack in the Box to me… it’s a little too slick. As much as I like Jack in the Box, I do tend to think of them as a late-night grease pit… a place to get a fried-egg sandwich at 2:00am with the winos, and teen club-goers. I suppose that’s the image they’re trying to shed.

If you read my previous post, you know I wasn’t terribly impressed with The Watchmen movie. But, being a big fan of pinup art, there was one thing that caught my eye early in the film… the poster of Sally Jupiter (aka Silk Spectre) hanging on the wall in The Comedian’s apartment.

As it turns out, the image was created by one of my favorite illustrators, James Jean, first mentioned here back in September of 2006. And, that poster is available for sale on James’ website. It’s slightly smaller than the version used in the movie, and it’s not too cheap at $85, but it is pretty darn cool.

I finally went to see The Watchmen tonight, and I have to say I’m sorry I did. I was very disappointed.

The film had some nice visuals, and it had a couple concepts that could have been really interesting to explore, but the story (if you can call it that) dragged on and on, and never really went anywhere. I was ready to leave about halfway though.

I did like the idea of the Dr. Manhattan character… becoming so disconnected from humanity when he’s altered in such an extreme way. I also liked the idea of what may happen to masked heros as they age, or what their personal lives might be like, but although the film touched on these story lines it just didn’t go far enough.

I was also a little confused by the fact that, with exception to Dr. Manhattan, none of these masked heroes appeared to be anything other than normal humans, yet they still exhibited super-human abilities… like punching though concrete walls and catching bullets with their bare hands. I also had no idea what caused Warshak’s mask to move, or what was up with that strange, horned, egyptian cat that just came out of nowhere (and why was no one surprised to see it)?

I’m giving The Watchmen 2 stars, and I should clarify my scale by saying I give one star simply for making a movie. The other star is for the few points in the film that I did like, but they weren’t enough to make this an enjoyable experience.

Save your money and wait for The Watchmen to come on TV… late at night when you don’t mind falling asleep while watching.

If you send out email newsletters, or other email-based marketing, you may be interested in these stats from Campaign Monitor. They took a look at over 250 million opens over a 6 month time period and posted the results.

There is some fine print in the accuracy of the results:

“The email client a person is using can only be detected if images are displayed. This can give an inflated weighting to email clients that display images by default, such as Outlook 2000 and the iPhone. It will also provide a lesser weighting to those that block images by default such as Gmail and Outlook 2007. Those email clients that aren’t capable of displaying images, such as older Blackberry models and other mobile devices cannot be included in this study.”
