Beauty expert Annabelle Taurua of Fresha describes Grecian waves as soft, voluminous cascading waves inspired by the women of ancient Greece.

"Zendaya wore Grecian waves at The Odyssey premiere, a hairstyle inspired by ancient Mediterranean goddesses. This style features voluminous, soft, cascading waves that look both natural and effortless."

Unlike traditional Hollywood curls, Grecian waves have a more organic feel. The loose S-shaped bends create plenty of movement and texture while still looking polished enough for a wedding day.

Zendaya's look perfectly captures where bridal beauty is heading for 2026. As sleek, structured gowns continue to dominate bridal fashion, Grecian waves offer the perfect counterbalance, bringing softness, romance and effortless movement. How to Give Grecian Waves a Bridal Twist

While Zendaya wore her waves loose on the red carpet, we love the idea of making the look even more wedding-worthy.

• Pair the waves with a cathedral veil.

How to Recreate the Look

To create Zendaya's enviable length and volume, Coree Moreno used a combination of Bellami clip-in and tape-in hair extensions, strategically placed around the crown and perimeter of the scalp for a seamless, natural finish. Three different shades were blended to perfectly mimic Zendaya's natural hair colour, while Oribe's Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection Spray helped create the soft, touchable texture that defined the look.

According to Annabelle:

“If you have naturally curly hair, scrunching your wet hair with curl cream or oils will most likely help you achieve Grecian waves; if not, a hair waver will achieve the same kind of waves. Once the waves are achieved, create a relaxed, half-up, half-down braid; either a regular or a fishtail works wonderfully. 

When styled with a lightweight product, Grecian waves can hold their shape even in warm weather, while still allowing movement, and they pair well with humidity-friendly updos. Salt sprays will also help to give that beachy, desert-like movement often synonymous with Greek goddesses.”

She also recommends lightweight styling products and salt spray such as Bumble & bumble's Surf Spray to maintain movement while helping the waves hold throughout the day.

The rain stopping just in time for their beautiful outdoor ceremony and the rhododendron in the garden, that hadn't bloomed for the past decade, came out just for them! The breathtaking bridal style was inspired by the understated elegance of Kate Moss and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy with a Carrie Bradshaw-influenced after-party look. Pretty print bridesmaid dresses, curvy stationery, a flower-filled reception, and a swoon-worthy cake, there is so much inspiration to look forward to. With natural and sophisticated imagery by Peter Carvill, let the swooning commence.

Sarah is from Belfast and Gani is originally from Albania and we know you're wondering how the lovebirds met. They met at work on Sarah's second day living London. "I had been CC’d into a few work emails before joining and Gani already had set his sights on me,” Sarah says. "But it took about four months before I agreed to go out with him."

Sarah reflects on their proposal which was as sweet as could be, "Gani took me to The Cotswolds (where we had our first holiday together during Covid) and surprised me by rushing me to get ready and out the door for a breakfast; and when I came downstairs there were candles, flowers and champagne with a leatherbound book of all our photos and memories together. He proposed with the most beautiful round diamond in a Georgian loop setting."

From the moment they started planning their special day Sarah and Gani knew they wanted the celebration to feel completely authentic to them and they wanted amazing food, brilliant music, incredible music, and a ceremony that felt deeply personal rather than traditional for tradition's sake.

Having everyone they loved together in one place celebrating meant the world to the pair. "It was really important to us that guests didn't have to travel between different venues throughout the weekend. We wanted somewhere we could host everyone the night before, celebrate together on the wedding day and gather again for breakfast the following morning, with enough accommodation for as many family and friends as possible to stay on site. Having everyone together in one place made the whole weekend feel so relaxed and special."

Sarah's wedding day look struck the perfect balance between timeless and contemporary. Her sublime silk satin gown was by The Own Studio. "It had soft draping and beautiful movement that felt romantic, ethereal and modern all at once." She styled it magically with a long tulle veil and Jimmy Choo heels with crystal straps. "The fabric almost danced with the wind during our outdoor ceremony, which made it feel even more magical."

They honoured Sarah's roots by including loads of Irish music during the ceremony. "I walked down the aisle to Allistrum's March, and during our handfasting we had The Lobster, a beautiful piece by Martin Hayes. A few weeks before the wedding, we went to see Martin Hayes perform live because I had always hoped to include his music in our ceremony. It made hearing those pieces on the day even more special. Maria and Anna performed them so beautifully – it was one of my favourite parts of the ceremony."

Their favourite reading was Having a Coke with You by Frank O'Hara. "On the surface it's a love poem about sharing an ordinary moment together, but it really celebrates how the person you love makes everyday life more extraordinary than even the greatest works of art. It's about choosing the simple joy of being with someone you love over anything else in the world."

What a fairytale way to walk into married life!

Sarah and Gani fell head over heels in love with Virginia Park Lodge the first time they visited thanks to the expectational food, the breathtaking gardens and the passionate team who made them feel so looked after from the start. “There was an incredible attention to detail, but nothing ever felt formal or pretentious—it felt warm, welcoming and genuinely special. We knew instantly it was somewhere our family and friends would love just as much as we did."

With the grooms party donning slick suits from Suitsupply the bridesmaids wore floral print pretty in pink gowns from Reformation. Sarah's nieces Lily and Phoebe stole the show as flower girls wearing ethereal dresses with frothy tulle skirts and they carried sweet basket bouquets.

They welcomed their loved ones with signature drinks of spicy margaritas and pints of Guinness. "As a nod to our union, we printed Sláinte and Gëzuar - meaning "cheers" in both Irish and Albanian - onto the foam of the Guinness. We asked guests to place bets on how many margaritas would be consumed (172!) and what time I'd take off my Jimmy Choos (I didn’t!)."

Bringing a hint of retro fun, the chic and curvy stationery was created by Sarah's amazing sister-in-law Clare which made the day feel super personalised.

The stunning blooms were curated by luxury Longford floral design studio Wild Feather Blooms. The spring arrangements included O'Hara roses, ranunculus, calla lilies, anthuriums, and cascading green amaranthus which created a natural and abundant feel.

“One of our favourite parts of the day were the speeches and how much we laughed,” she reflects.

"Make the day as personal to you as a couple as possible," is their sage wedding planning advice. "Don't worry too much about trying to please everyone else. The moments people remember most are the ones that genuinely reflect who you are. If you're relaxed and having the best time, your guests will feed off that energy and enjoy themselves too. The day goes by so quickly, so make decisions that you'll look back on with a smile, rather than ones you think you're 'supposed' to make."

Their heart-shaped Lambeth wedding cake was created by Belfast-based bespoke wedding cake makers Baked by Corri.

They chose a song they loved for years for their first dance, Childish Gambino's beautiful cover of Tamia's I'm So Into You. "It just felt like us—romantic, soulful and understated. It has such a timeless feel, and it was the perfect soundtrack to that moment."

Sarah wanted a completely different look for the evening that was little more playful and dramatic. "Inspired by Carrie Bradshaw, I changed into a mini dress with a tulle skirt and bodice that was perfect for dancing the night away."

After the wedding, the newlyweds took a beautiful trip to Co. Mayo and then Finn Lough where they soaked up the beauty of nature as they stayed in little bubbles in the forest going for bike rides and even a dip in the lake! "Ireland is an extremely beautiful country and should be explored more. We are planning a big trip later in the year."

After all, you only get one wedding bouquet, so if you'd rather leave it in expert hands, you'll have the reassurance of knowing your flowers are being cared for by someone who does it every day.

Preparation is Key

When it comes to preserving your wedding bouquet, the good news is that the majority of flower types can be preserved. However, this is truly down to the quality and condition that they're in when you begin. Preserving flowers requires a gentle touch and a lot of patience, as the process can take anything from two weeks to three months depending on your chosen method, but more on that below.

If you're not opting for DIY, contact your preservation supplier before your wedding day to ask their advice on how to ensure your florals will be in the best condition for what they intend to do. Also, mention to your florist that you will be preserving the flowers, as they may skip spraying any preservatives on your bouquet.

Make sure you have someone on hand on the wedding day to keep the florals out of direct sunlight and well hydrated. And we hate to say it, but it may be best to skip the bouquet toss, in which case here are great alternatives to the toss!

1. Pressed Flowers

1. Firstly, prepare your flowers. Trim away unwanted parts such as the stem, leaves, or any parts that are discoloured.
2. Place your flowers as flat as possible on parchment paper inside the pages of a weighted hardback and let time work its magic.
3. About seven to 10 days should do the trick, however keep an eye.
4. Once the flowers are dry, you'll be able to display them as you wish!

2. Air-Dried Flowers

1. Ensure your flowers are kept cool and well hydrated. Fresh is best!
2. For best results, tie each individual stem with a piece of string and hang upside down.
3. This can take up to three weeks, so ensure the location is a dry, warm place.
4. Once completely dried, display them in a vase or create something artistic like a wreath.
5. Alternatively store in a glass box or a wicker basket as a talking point in your home, or try the resin DIY project below.

3. A Gallery Wall

After you've dried or pressed your flowers, why not place a selection of them on a good quality parchment paper and place them in double glass frames of varying sizes to create a gallery wall effect.

4. Resin Flowers

1. Follow the drying flower method above first.
2. Once the flowers are fully dried, find a suitable container, fill it halfway with the epoxy resin liquid and arrange the flowers in the fluid.
3. Fill the container to the top and leave to dry.
4. Once the process is complete, you'll have a unique piece. The options are coasters, a paper weight, book ends, stand up letters, a christmas decoration - whatever you wish!

5. A Piece of Jewellery

If you've mastered the preserving method using resin above, then jewellery is another pretty way to display this. However, if you're not already proficient in jewellery making, this might be one to leave to the professionals on the list below.

6. Dry with Silica Gel

1. Silica gel crystals (just like the sachets you get with new shoes) absorbs the moisture around it, so form a base of crystals in an airtight container like a lunchbox and place your flowers in the crystals.
2. Pour the silica gel around the petals, making sure they get into all the nooks and crannies.
3. Fill the container to the top and seal it with a lid.
4. Once the process is complete, give it over a week, then remove and spray with hairspray to set.

NB. Remember to wear a mask and gloves when doing this DIY.

7. Bathsalts

1. Combine 1 cup of epsom salt with 1 cup of sea salt and ½ cup of baking soda in a large bowl.
2. Choose your favourite essential oil - our favourite is lavender, lemon and eucalyptus - and pour in about 20 drops.
3. Toss together and add your dried florals.
4. Once all mixed, add to your jars and enjoy!

8. Potpourri

1. Prepare your flowers, remove stems and place on sheet of parchment paper. Ensure the flowers are facing up.
2. Bake the flowers at 200F degrees for 1-2 hours until they are fully dehydrated.
3. To enhance the scent, add a few drops of your preferred essential oil and gently toss and allow to soak for a couple of weeks.
4. For an extra luxurious feel, add some dried orange peel, cloves, cinnamon sticks and dried lavender.
5. Ensure you keep you potpourri in an airtight container so you can preserve every bit of that gorgeous scent!

9. Display Your Wedding Invite

Don't just leave it stuck in a drawer or your memory box. Using dried flowers in a blank frame is a gorgeous way to frame and display your wedding invite for all to see. Especially if it was something really, special and unique.

10. Paint Them (or Hire an Artist To)

If you're artistic yourself, this can be a lovely project to sit down with after the wedding, allowing you to relive the beauty of your bouquet as you paint. Better still, it's an option that doesn't rely on having the bouquet itself, you can work from your wedding photos, making it perfect if your flowers are long gone.

If painting isn't your forte, commission an artist to create a bespoke illustration instead. Whether you love soft watercolours, bold acrylics or contemporary line drawings, there's a style to suit every home and every couple. The finished artwork becomes a meaningful reminder of your wedding day that's every bit as personal as the bouquet itself.

Here, we've rounded up the ultimate list of bridesmaid duties - and while you won't be required to do everything on the bridesmaid checklist (we hope!), check in with your bride to see what she'd like you to take care of and do your share. We guarantee you'll be on your way to securing your status as the best bridesmaid ever.

Bridesmaid Duties Before the Wedding

• Plan the hen party - we've lots of hen party planning features to help with this one!
• Create a WhatsApp group with the bride and all the bridesmaids (you might want one with groomsmen too, depending on the structure of the wedding party).
• Check in with the couple regularly - offer practical help as often as you can.
• Be specific - enquire about particular jobs rather than asking generally what needs to be done.
• Visit the wedding venue if required - help make decisions on layout and décor. Decision fatigue is very real.
• Meet the wedding coordinator at the venue, and offer yourself as a person of contact on the day for any issues.
• Help with any wedding DIY sessions.
• Make yourself available for wedding dress shopping and fittings where possible.
• Make yourself available for bridesmaid dress shopping and fittings - do some leg-work in finding dresses.
• Listen to any wedding planning woes - be supportive and enthusiastic.
• Turn all pre-wedding events into an excuse for brunch, cake and/or cocktails.
• Book some pre-wedding pampering - tan, nails, waxing, facials etc.
• Make sure your room is booked if staying at the venue.

Bridesmaid Duties on the Week of the Wedding

• If you can, try to take a couple of days off work so you're available to help out

• Make sure the bride eats breakfast.
• Ensure the hair and makeup are running on time.
• Introduce yourself as a go-to person to any key people, like the photographer, videographer or florist.
• Keep an eye on the time throughout the morning.
• Field any questions from guests and suppliers, and keep any issues away from the couple where possible.
• Make sure the prep room doesn't get too hot or crowded, it should be a fun, calm space for the bride.
• Help the bride into her dress, and assist with shoes and jewellery.

Bridesmaid Checklist on the Wedding Day

• Help her in and out of cars, or down stairs if she needs assistance.
• Fix her dress and veil throughout the day, such as at the top of the aisle, or when posing for photos.
• Take her bouquet for the ceremony.
• Arrange for cans or a 'Just Married' sign to be on the back of the wedding car.
• Help round family members up for photos.
• Pay any suppliers you've been asked to pay.
• Carry an emergency kit and the bride's lipstick - let her know if she needs touch-ups.
• Assist her going to the bathroom, if required - here's how it works!
• Keep the bride hydrated and fed - make sure she drinks water and have a snack handy in your bag.

• Assist with the little members of the bridal party.

• Encourage guests to sign the guestbook or visit the photo booth.
• Help the bride into her second dress if she has one for dancing.
• Be first on the dance floor and encourage others to keep it filled for the night!
• Arrange for candles, rose petals and bubbly in the bridal suite.
• Help with any send-off the couple have planned such as a sparkler exit.
• Take the wedding bouquet and put it in water for preserving.
• Tip any staff the couple wants to tip - here's who you might consider.
• Help the bride out of her dress, and pack it up so it doesn't get damaged.

Bridesmaid Checklist Day After the Wedding Day

• Make an effort to be down for breakfast with the couple - full debrief on the day with bubbles!
• Collect any cards from the venue's safe for the couple.
• Ensure any flowers and decor is packed and moved for day two celebrations or to a car for transport home.
• Box up keepsakes such as framed photos, guestbook and photo booth snaps.
• Offer to do the bride's hair and makeup for her day two celebrations - she might be running low on energy.

Not only could this save money if on a strict budget, but it's also a more sustainable and eco-friendly way to style your wedding. However, do note that this really only works in certain circumstances, and will require extra help and planning with your florist before, and on the day. Below, we reveal how to repurpose wedding flowers and decor on your big day with nine clever ways to do so.

How to Repurpose Wedding Flowers & Decor

When it comes to re-using your wedding decor and flowers on the day, you will mostly be repurposing them from the ceremony to the reception space. This works best when the ceremony and reception are in the one venue. So while your guests are enjoying drinks and nibbles, your ceremony decor is easily moved to the nearby reception space with little hassle or damage.

If you're having a church wedding and driving to the reception venue, things can get tricky. An elaborate floral piece, such as a fresh flower arch, will have taken your florist some time to put together, and won't be transported easily or put up again easily. Here are three things to consider:

• Moving a piece like this really isn't something you can entrust to a family friend, speak to your florist, stylist or wedding planner in advance about whether they can move your arrangement to a second location.
• Ensure the piece is designed in such a way that it allows for disassembly and reassembly.
• There could be a limit on the distance they will relocate the décor to, so be realistic about what is achievable given the distance and time frame.

Create a Vision Board

To decide the wedding decor and flowers you want and which you could repurpose, create a wedding vision board. Identify your colour palette, the florals and foliage you want, and of course your budget.

Once decided on, think about the spaces that need decorating, from the ceremony right through to the reception. The main spots to be enhanced are listed below, but you don't have to include everything on this list. Your florist and decor stylist can suggest what can be repurposed elsewhere.

If you're a DIY couple, a few designated guests can help transfer your wedding decor and smaller floral arrangements from the ceremony to the reception, as you'll have brought them there yourself anyway. But make sure your helpers are clear on what they're bringing, when it should be moved, and to where.

Pew and aisle ends are one of the most versatile pieces of décor, and add an extra touch to your ceremony space by enhancing the walkway of the aisle. These can be tied at the edge of a church pew or hung from the back of chairs with ribbon, then transferred to hang on the backs of chairs at the top table or guest tables, or put into bud vases as centrepieces. If you wish to add to bud vases, make sure your florist is aware so they can create accordingly!

2. Large Ceremony Arrangements Can Become Centrepiece Florals

Reuse your magnificent large floral arrangements from your ceremony as centrepieces at the reception. Place them in vases, or we love them on tall stands in the middle of your guest tables for extra wow factor.

3. Lanterns & Glass Vases Can Become Centrepieces

Lanterns and glass vases make for the most beautiful ceremony décor all year round. In clusters at the entrance or along the aisle,  it's hard to beat the ambiance of candlelight. However, ask your church or venue if you have permission to light a real flame. It's not unusual for them to be prohibited for safety reasons.

You can also mix these arrangements with flowers, dried or fresh to be reused on guest tables as centrepieces at the reception. Place them on a wooden slice or tray, with tea lights and added greenery.

4. Ceremony Backdrop Can Become a Photo Op

Floral and decorated moon gates, pillars, arches and flower walls all make for the most epic ceremony backdrop. But you don't only want to use it for an hour and then not see it again. Transfer your wow-piece to the reception room so that you can use it to maximum effect there too.

Place it either behind the top table, or in a space where you can add a bench or chairs, maybe add some props, and - voilà - you have the perfect space for photos with your guests!

5. Floral Pillars Can Become Your Wedding Cake Display

Floral pillars are spectacular and look amazing at the entrance of a church or ceremony space, or on either side of your altar or ceremony table. They make for the most beautiful images, so why not allow them to frame your beautiful wedding cake display, where you'll be snapped slicing your sweet creation later on. It can also be a wonderful way to decorate your memorial table or guest book station.

6. Ceremony Arrangements Can Become Reception Florals

Larger arrangements from your aisle or altar can be moved to your reception and given a second life, whether that's placed at the base of your tables, framing your sweetheart table, or creating a beautiful focal point beside the cake or bar.

7. The Unity Arrangement Can Become a Top Table Centrepiece

Unity floral arrangements, known as a 'long and low' are usually the perfect shape for adding to the top table without taking up too much space or blocking anyone's view. When repurposed from the ceremony altar to your reception they can really pack an aesthetic punch. Simply remove the candles!

8. Bridal Party Bouquets Can Become Top Table Flowers

Add some extra oomph to the top table by simply adding extra vases for your bridesmaids bouquets to sit into. Otherwise they could get damaged and wilt throughout the day. Bonus points if they are bridesmaid basket bouquets!

9. Welcome Sign Can Become a Table Plan

It's a really nice touch to have a welcome sign on an easel outside your church or ceremony space, welcoming your guests to the day. This is something that can be easily moved by one of your helpers or your wedding planner to stand outside the reception space as a table plan.

Hire a frame or source a large picture frame, and design one side as a welcome sign and the other a table plan, that you can swap out or flip over. Equally, it's becoming very popular for young members of the bridal party to carry fun or cute signs when walking up the aisle, so these can also be repurposed for later.

Top Transferring Tip

If you've decided to repurpose your wedding décor and flowers without the help of your florist or planner, then plan ahead and choose a reliable friend or family member. They may need to speak to your florist on the morning of the wedding to be shown how your arrangements come apart, or can be joined together when repurposing.

If moving between two locations, they will need a car with enough space to fit everything, and will need to know the wedding co-ordinator's name at the venue, so they can be shown where the pieces need to be placed.

They basked in fairytale light as they celebrated with 100 of their nearest and dearest and they exchanged vows in a breathtaking outdoor ceremony in front of the mansion. The atmosphere only became more magical as the sun set for their candlelit reception in the courtyard under twinkling lights. We simply can't wait for you to see their imagery from luxury wedding photographer Märit Williams who captured the memories that they will love to relive forever.

First, let's dive into their love story. Delani is from Detroit and Adam is from Chicago and they are based in Minneapolis. They met in Scottsdale in Arizona when Delani was attending her best friend’s bachelorette party and Adam was at his best friend’s bachelor party! Coincidentally, they both happened to be living in Chicago at the time and when they got back from their trips Adam asked Delani out on their first date. The rest was history!

Fast forward to their proposal, "Adam proposed on our trip to Maui Hawaii on 1/1/24. He coordinated a private dinner with a photographer at the Four Seasons Maui. It was magical!"

Delani dreamt of a historic wedding venue that married vintage charm and European-inspired architecture with a beautiful outdoor space. It was love at first sight when she saw a photo of the courtyard at the American Swedish Institute, she simply had to view it. "The mansion is absolutely beautiful inside and out and has several rooms with distinct style and décor, making every corner feel like a work of art. I fell in love with the idea of our ceremony being outside on the front steps of the mansion and our reception in the courtyard under the twinkly lights."

Enlisting Jenna Culley Events to bring their dream day to life, Delani envisioned decor that exuded timeless elegance, romance and sophistication. The colour palette was infused with subtle hints of blush pink and delicate bows were a key accent in the styling. "Even my wedding dress embodied my personal style and wedding aesthetic – elegant, bold, and undeniably unforgettable, making a powerful statement on my special day!"

Her wedding day look was a masterpiece of timeless glamour as she wore the illusion lace Veronica dress by Galia Lahav. The trumpet-style bridal gown boasts three-dimensional embroidered lace and soft ruffles, with sheer side panels and a voluminous skirt made of layered soft tulle. She accessorised with gathered illusion tulle gloves with floral and beaded crystal embellishments, floral lace Betsey Johnson heels and vintage earrings from The Golden Pearl Vintage.

The couple's outdoor ceremony included a mesmerising floral display with tonal tea roses and lush foliage lacing up the steps of the mansion.

"My biggest priority from the very beginning was to always remind myself what this day meant to Adam and I," Delani says. She will never forget their first look. "Both of us were overcome with enthusiasm and emotion. It was the first time I truly felt some relief that day was when I was able to embrace and hug Adam. It reminded me that this day was about celebrating our new life as husband and wife, and not about the small details that could go wrong."

The couple opted not to have a traditional wedding party so that they could spend as much time together soaking up every magical moment.

Dapper groom exuded timeless suaveness in his Martin Patrick suit and amongst his accessories was a sustainable feather bow tie.

Delani's bridal bouquet marrying blush and sun-bleached hues is giving us IRL heart-eyes.

"Our officiant and Delani’s brother in law, did an amazing job at making our guests laugh while sharing thoughtful pieces of martial advice that we will never forget," they reflect.

The amorous ambiance of their courtyard reception was undeniable as oodles of candles brought an enchanting glow with bow details a plenty and place cards boasting the couple's uber-chic monogram. The elegant florals which included hydrangeas, dahlia and anemone added to the timeless beauty of the decor.

"The wedding day unfolded in the most enchanting way. We were blessed with a flawless, sun-drenched weather. The atmosphere was nothing short of romantic, feminine, and intimate, brimming with love and joy," the bride reminisces.

As if we couldn't swoon anymore... How gorgeous is the couple's wedding cake which rested on a table scattered with rose petals.

The couple loved being able to spend some one-on-one time together before joining their loved ones for cocktail hour.

"We were able to unwind and enjoy our first drink together rather than feeling pressured to finish the wedding party photos. It was such a special experience!"

The celebration felt like "a dream" especially during golden hour and their reception had the vibe of a relaxed dinner party with their closest family and friends.

As the sun set the atmosphere became wonderfully cosy with string lights twinkling above and candles flickering softly. "It was warm, personal, and unforgettable."

Their stunning celebration included a first dance to Found by Jacob Banks, a spellbinding second wedding dress with a scene-stealer bow and late-night pizza.

"I wish someone had told me before starting the planning process that planning a wedding is as hard as you make it," the bride reflects. "My advice to future brides is to not stress about the 'what ifs' and just enjoy the process. Everything will come together as it should, and your guests won’t even notice those small details that are keeping you up at night!"

The couple set off on a trip of a lifetime as they began their honeymoon on Pangulasian Island in the Philippines. "We enjoyed lounging by the pool, island hopping, kayaking, hiking, snorkeling, diving, and indulging in relaxing massages and facials." After their tranquil escape things took an action-packed turn as they went to Japan, exploring Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo. "The food, culture, and shopping were beyond amazing, offering an unforgettable experience. It was the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure—an experience we highly recommend!"

• Think about it for a few days before doing anything. You'll feel better about declining if you know you've explored your options, and given the invite a good amount of thought. The couple will appreciate this, too.
• Think about your relationship with the couple. If you're very close with one or both of the people getting married, it might be best to break the news over dinner or via a phone call. If, on the other hand, you don't know them well, an RSVP will usually suffice.
• Thank the couple for inviting you. This one is non-negotiable!

• Be honest about your reasons for declining. This can be tricky if, for example, if you won't be able to travel because you're pregnant, but you haven't yet told friends and family your happy news. In cases like these, depending on your relationship with the couple, you may feel compelled to tell a little white lie, but generally speaking, you can expect a more positive response if you're upfront about things. It's hard for a couple to react badly, if, let's say, you tell them that you're struggling financially, or you're uncomfortable about attending because your ex is in the wedding party.
• That said, it's fine to keep it vague, especially if you're not close with the couple. The phrase "work commitments" is just as effective as a four-paragraph account of your upcoming business trip!

• Be firm. If you decline a wedding invitation when you're actually on the fence about attending, the conversation can quickly get awkward. The couple could try to persuade you to attend, and may make offers that you're not comfortable with, for example, to pay for your accommodation if you're declining for financial reasons. While this might be a viable solution for some, remember that this is a post about turning down a wedding invitation, and to do that, you've got to use purposeful language. This brings us to our next point...
• Use the sample phrases at the end of this post. These will come in handy whether you're speaking to the couple in person or by post or email, and we've included options for all formality levels.
• Follow up with a call or message. Even if you don't know the couple very well, a follow-up call, email or text is a nice way to show that you're genuinely disappointed that you can't make it, and diffuse any awkwardness.

• Optional: Figure out a way to be there in spirit. Depending on your relationship with the couple, you may like to have your presence felt on the day, even if you can't be there in person. You could arrange for a bottle of Champagne to be sent to the couple on the morning of the wedding, send a video message, or pen a few words of support to be read out during the speeches.
• Optional: Arrange an alternative date to celebrate with the couple. Show the couple how much they mean to you by making time for an evening out together. It's best to suggest a date after the wedding as they'll be pretty busy in the months leading up to the big day!

DON'T:

• Don't be flippant about declining. Couples are generally very understanding about non-attendance, but to avoid hurt feelings on their part, you should avoid making jokes, bragging about how busy you are, or appearing not to care.
• Don't go into too much detail. If you can't sum up your reasons for declining the wedding invitation in two sentences, go back to the drawing board and try again. You want to give just enough information that the couple understand your reasons. If you go into too much detail, it may cause more guilt and awkwardness.

• Don't leave it until the last minute. The couple will be disappointed that you can't make the wedding, but if you put off telling them for weeks and weeks, you run the risk of them being disappointed and inconvenienced! A prompt RSVP means that they should have time to invite someone else that they'd love to share the date with, so be sure and work to the deadline indicated on the invitation.
• Don't forget to formally RSVP. Even if you've spoken to the couple in person first, it's always polite to respond in the way indicated on the invitation. Otherwise, your response might be lost in a mire of wedding admin.

• "Thank you for thinking of me. I regret to tell you that I won't be able to attend due to another commitment, but please accept my warmest congratulations."
• "Regrettably I won't be able to attend the wedding due to some conflicting commitments."
• “Thank you so much for the invitation, I really appreciate it and it means a great deal.”
• "I would love to attend, but I have prior commitments on that date."
• "We would love to celebrate with you but unfortunately, we can't make it work."
• "I've given it a lot of thought, and unfortunately, we won't be able to attend."
• "Thanks so much for the invitation. Unfortunately, due to family/work/financial commitments, I won't be able to make it."

• "Thank you both so much for including us in your wedding. Sadly, we won't be able to attend, as we will be traveling to the UK for my nephew's christening. I wish we could be in two places at once!"
• "I hope you have the most wonderful time celebrating this special occasion."
• "I hope we can get together for drinks soon, and you can tell me all about your wedding plans!"
• "We would love to celebrate with you as soon as you return from your honeymoon."
• "We will be thinking of you on August 10th and popping a bottle of Champagne in your honour!"
• "I'm sorry to say that we'll have to celebrate this one from afar!"
• "I'm gutted that I won't make the wedding, but I know you'll have a phenomenal day."
• "I'm sorry that I won't be there in person, but I'm sending my best wishes to you both."
