I can think of two reasons, one is that there is a problem with the Smoke Alarm. The other is that the battery has exceeded its shelf life. Batteries just sitting do wear out. If the alarm sat on the shel a long time before it was sold and the battery was included (most companies do not do this anymore for this reason) then it may have been stale dated.
