Possible contender for the most beautiful record ever written? Will Saul (under his new ‘dark-pop’ moniker Close) introduced the Dusky remix of this track on with B.Traits on Annie Mac’s show on Radio 1 on Friday, and both are completely amazing.

His Aus Music label seems to be where I’ve been buying most of my tracks for a while now; consistently releasing greats like Ejeca, Midland and George Fitzgerald and the Will Saul Essential Mix is still on repeat for both me and Emily. Well done that man.

It’s been a while since I’ve written about Cassian but he’s one of those people whose mixes you can play even when the people you’re with aren’t really keen on house music, or it’s not really an appropriate occasion (I always get told off for playing banging techno when I’m hosting a dinner party). They’re nice builders, melody-friendly, and always with a little bang at the end.

He’s just finished a mammoth tour of the Americas and the title implies that he’s pretty happy to finally be home.

This is SO DAMN GOOD. I still love how utterly dirty Catz n Dogz play, when Greg and Voitek are so polite and mild-mannered to chat to. Even tracks like their They Frontin’ which are already filthy, are stripped out here until there’s just pure dirt. I’m not sure anyone else could mix in HNNY‘s sample of Brandy and Monica’s The Boy is Mine and still make it sound cool.

My music homework – actually listening to all the things I dig out or get sent – gets done when I’m sat at my desk concentrating on something else. Entire mixes get lost unless they are sufficiently banging to stop me getting my proper work done (!)

So it was nice today when this, from 19-year-old LA-based Justin Jay snuck into my earlobes and gave me a little desk-rave break.

Where is Kittin?

Miss Kittin and Marc Houle have collaborated for Houle’s Items and Things label on Where is Kittin? a six track EP featuring two original tracks, as well as remixes from Dubfire, John Foxx & The Maths, and two further edits from Miss Kittin, whose double album Calling From the Stars is out 22 April.

Busy Erol

I always think of Erol Alkan at this time of year.

In our early days of attendance at the Miami Winter Music Conference we’d be walking around a little shell-shocked, not really knowing where to look between the oversized Floridian families cramming burgers into their mouths and extending those XXXXL waistlines just a little more, and the golden beach ladies with their very own set of beach balls. Then we’d see Erol, and a sense of relief in comfortable familiarity would wash over us. There he would be in his customary black t-shirt and converse; Erol hadn’t changed for these tropical surroundings. He stayed true to his own brand of bleepy electro too, when all around him were selling their souls to Avicii as if they’d been driven mad by the heat.

Erol celebrates Easter like no-one else can. Defying tiredness with what started in 2008 as a five-hour set on that Maundy Thursday (4 days to recover afterwards), then as if challenging himself each year we’ve now reached 10 hours.

It seems this year he’s been busier than ever before, still finding time to sign new act Future Four to Phantasy, as well as rework Night Works Long Forgotten Boy.

And of course there’s the iconic Erol Alkan 6 Mix humming alongside it all, just right for the day after the 10 hour set when you seem to be unable to move unless you can hear Erol playing a record. The sixth but sadly final show of the 3rd 6 Music residency went out this Friday 12 April and it’s a complete banger from start to finish. Strong, Erol, strong.

Smooth Mahogany

A huge thanks to The Mahogany Blog for a great live session at St Pancras Old Church last night. So nice to hear some acts absolutely able to belt out big acoustic sound in the usually-quiet surroundings. Here’s a little bit of what we heard.

George Ezra‘s voice is so powerful he turned the amp down at the start of his set. Completely captivating, both from a voice and songwriting perspective. I’m looking forward to hearing more from him.
