Day 11

2011-06-27T11:08:00.001-03:00

So yesterday I had a huge accomplishment:

Putting this bad boy together is a little more difficult than this looks. I have had him since I was 4 years old, and it's time to say goodbye old friend. I want to replace the wooden parts with pieces of wood with more character: old doors, driftwood, etc.

In the meantime, however, I've been looking at paint colors for the room.
My favorite is Julep from Sherwin Williams.

Enjoy!

Day 10

2011-06-26T10:39:00.001-03:00

Check out this great idea for a jewelry holder from The Berry

(images by me)

All you need is

yarn
hot glue gun
scissors
picture frames (backless)

Cut the yarn to lengths long enough to criss-cross across the picture frames, and twist the pieces of yarn into a standard braid. Super glue the ends of the yarn to the back of the frame, hang on your walls, and enjoy!

Day 5

2011-06-21T16:00:00.001-03:00

Today I'm giving a little shoutout to one of my favorite home-improvement websites (created by a non-celebrity)

Home*Tweaking (or H*T) is authored by Dana Miller, who more recently focuses on REALLY renovating her home (not just redecorating it). If you're more into the redecorating side of things (like me), check out her older posts for inspiration and ideas.

Day 4

2011-06-20T16:55:00.001-03:00

Although I'm not going for a beach theme in my room, I think this video is great because it shows that details matter!

Maybe I'll use this idea to paint my lamp shade?

Day 3

2011-06-19T16:23:00.001-03:00

Perfect timing for a cruise in the Bahamas? I think so.

In the meantime, now that I've already poisoned your mind with pictures in my previous post, I'm going to show you easy ways you can improve your living space in just one afternoon.

Here is an idea for a rug made from old t-shirts using a hula hoop.

Day 2: the reason why I created this blog

Day 1

2011-06-17T16:23:00.001-03:00

I hope I won’t regret this.

Okay, so maybe I’ve been thinking about doing something... big. For a while. Because as much as I don’t want to admit it, moving sucks. I’m pretty sure I’ve been packing and unpacking boxes in my sleep. But before all of this madness began, I had a moment in college when I realized that I am not reaching my creative potential.

Then I had another thought. WHO is reaching their creative potential? Soccer moms who scrapbook and employees at Anthropologie who get PAID to be creative?

What about the rest of the world? I consider myself in that category, because I am not getting paid to do this and I am not a mom (Please, Lord. Don’t let that happen for another couple years). Everyone thinks they are too busy to change their lives, but it’s simply a matter of prioritizing your objectives. Those who place creativity high on their list do not have to sacrifice a comfortable financial lifestyle, and I am dead-set on proving so.

To get started, before I post pictures of the “Before” room, I’m going to let ya’ll know which creative direction I plan on taking.

I want things to be detailed, relaxed, sophisticated, and colorful. Basically, the exact opposite of what my room looks like now.

These pictures inspire me.

the beginning.

2011-06-17T00:38:00.001-03:00

Hi, my name is Caroline, and this is a carefully thought out, well planned, and highly creative experiment... yeah, right.

Seriously though, I have no interior decorating experience, no blogging experience (unless facebook and twitter count), and practically no money. I am a poor college student whose parents recently moved from Washington, DC to about an hour outside Raleigh, North Carolina.

This is my way of dealing with leaving my high school friends and memories behind.

As I prepared for the movers to pack up my stuff, I looked around my tiny 9x12 room and realized: my furniture looked boring, my bedding was immature, and my room felt like.. well, someone other than me had been living there for the past couple years.

In my head I thought, no wonder I was never home in high school; I never made my room my home. This is my one big chance, my parents aren’t supposed to move for another 3 years and I can make the best of it before I have to move out for good. So, instead of sitting in front of the TV this summer, I am going to completely renovate my bedroom—by myself.

Here’s the catch: I have less than $100 in my bank account, there isn’t an IKEA within 50 miles, and my parents are RENTING this house.

Luckily, I can paint the walls.

Let’s do this.
