We love the bright colors incorporated into this stunning styled shoot from Carrie Swails Photography! With all of it’s rustic charm and lacy details, this session has loads of great ideas for a beautiful spring wedding! And on top of all of that, it is all “green” inspired! It’s chocked full of reduced, reused, and recycled ideas that you can integrate into your wedding design! So we’re kicking off this week thinking about creative ways to incorporate eco-friendly details in your BIG day. “Going green” can also be oh-so-chic! See for yourselves…

Notes from the photographer…

As Earth Day was approaching, a “Something Green” wedding stylized shoot was underway. Colorado is known for “being green” and for those who keep that important concept in mind, us vendors in Colorado wanted to make sure to let love birds know that there are so many ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle for your big day! The venue, Clear Creek History Park, is beautifully located along the Clear Creek in Colorado, and includes original housing, farming, and gardening from the late 1800’s. It has stunning organic photo ops and is perfect for a Green Wedding Ceremony and/or Reception. As far as décor, using locally grown flowers and reusing everything was important to stay true to being eco-friendly. The tables were made of old doors, the guestbook and cake tables were old dressers. We reused mismatched china and table settings. The décor was collected from various places such as thrift stores, vintage rentals, and even around the house. An old puzzle was used as the guest book and even the Sharpie used to write is made of reused plastic. Reused mason jars, old bottles, vases, and books for centerpieces, reused lace and burlap, they are all charming items and gave that rustic feel that so many couples are eager for. Small plants and trees as favors, will leave the guests a way to be green as well. Buying your wedding gown off the floor or from a consignment shop, helps use less energy and shipping isn’t needed which leaves a smaller carbon footprint (and will save you money). Don’t forget about the groom… Have him just use a nice tux out of the closet or rent a tux (renting means reused for everything wedding). Start by making an eco-friendly statement to your guests by sending a recycled invitation where they can RSVP online.

Being that an average wedding produces over 400lbs of trash and 63 tons of carbon dioxide, even if you take one small step to being green, it makes a difference. So you can see that staying eco-friendly throughout your planning and designing process doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style and elegance!

DIY Project: Watercolor Escort Cards

We are in LOVE with these watercolor escort cards over on Once Wed and couldn’t resist sharing! With each card being different from the next, this simple DIY project adds a personal touch to your BIG day… and with styling from the talented Ginny Au, calligraphy by Holly Hollon and photography by Erich McVey, you know you can’t go wrong!

Supplies:
Watercolor paints
Watercolor brush
Heavy professional grade paper (BFK Rives or Stonehenge is recommended. Make sure that the paper texture is not too rough – this would inhibit the calligrapher from writing on the paper.)
Metal ruler
Glass of water
Cutting mat

Directions:

1. Tear paper into 3 inch strips.

2. Using the strips of paper, tear them into 3.5 inch pieces.

3. Mix a palette of colors (for example, yellow, orange, pink).

4. Create washes on the pieces of torn paper using the range of colors from the palette.

5. Let Cards dry for 24 hours before writing on them, this ensures that they are completely dry so the ink will not bleed. Send to the calligrapher or try doing your own calligraphy with a DIY calligraphy kit.

6. We pinned our DIY wedding watercolor escort cards to a linen board with delicate pins, but the options for display are limitless.

Signature Cocktail Recipe: Sparkling Cranberry Lemonade

We are ready for summer here at the OHL office and any excuse to celebrate and throw a party! Oh, and we’re pretty sure a wedding is the best excuse of all! This sweet and tangy cocktail is the perfect thirst-quencher for an outdoor, summer affair. Bottoms up!

Sparkling Cranberry Lemonade Recipe:
Yields: 9 cups

1 (12-oz.) can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed*
4 cups white cranberry juice cocktail
1 (750-milliliter) bottle extra-dry Champagne or sparkling wine
1/4 cup Cointreau
Cranberries (frozen) and lemon slice for garnish.

*For a sweeter, more colorful variation, you may substitute pink lemonade.

Instructions:
Stir together lemonade concentrate and cranberry juice cocktail in a large pitcher. Cover and chill at least 1 hour or up to 24 hours. Stir in Champagne and Cointreau just before serving. Garnish with frozen cranberries and lemon slice.

Notes from Jessica at A Vintage Affair Events & Rentals…
The 1920s were a golden age in American history and the parties of the Jazz Age, as the era is known, were glamorous. I chose a unique color scheme of green, pink, gold, and ivory for the shoot because I felt it captured the luxury and romanticism of the Jazz Age – with a modern twist. From there, it was all in the details: flowing drinks (even under Prohibition!), dramatic bow ties, extravagant hats and headpieces, vintage cars, soft & romantic flowers, letterpress invitations, fantastic dresses, flapper-style hair, whiskey tables, and more.

Notes from Bare Root Flora…
We wanted a soft, romantic look to the floral, and texture is one of our signature elements. So we paired gorgeous peonies, dahlia, roses and ranunculus with lots of lush and textural eucalyptus, camellia, and olive foliage, and privet and pepper berries. Anemone, veronica, Queen Anne’s lace, and scabiosa gave the pieces the loose, draped feel we were going for.
