With its history traced all the way to 1930's, ALEXANDRA HOSPITAL was a British Military Hospital. In 1971, the British Military Hospital was handed over to the Government of Singapore and it was renamed Alexandra Hospital. Restructured on 1st October 2000, it became a member of the National Healthcare Group. Its facilities and services were upgraded to serve patients better.

From August 2010 till 2014, Jurong Health Services assumes management of Alexandra Hospital. Under the new, Alexandra Hospital continues to serve patients at Alexandra Hospital and provide a comprehensive range of clinical services and care for the community, such as anaesthesia, dermatology, eye, dental, geriatrics, ENT, annual health check-up, etc.

A Mental Problem

The difference between CRAZY and STUPID.

One truck driver was doing his usual delivery to Mental Hospital.
He discovered a flat tyre when he was about to go home.
He jacked up the truck and took the flat tyre down.
When he was about to fix the spare tyre, he accidentally dropped all the bolts into the drain.

As he can't fish the bolts out, he started to panic.

One patient happened to walk past and asked the driver what happened.
The driver thought to himself, since there's nothing much he can do; hetold the patient the whole incident.

The patient laughed at him & said "can't even fix such a simpleproblem...no wonder you are destined to be a truck driver..." Here's what you can do, take one bolt each from the other 3 tyres and fixit onto this tyre.
Then drive to the nearest workshop and replace the missing ones, easy as that"

The driver was very impressed and asked "You're so smart but why are you here at the Mental Hospital?"

Patient replied:
"Hello, I stay here because I'm crazy not STUPID!"

Roughly Only 2 Out of 3 People are Singapore Citizens in Year 2009

Singapore is a multiracial society where people live harmoniously and interaction among different races are commonly seen. The pattern of Singapore stems from the inherent cultural diversity among Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European. In the past, the immigrants intermingled to a certain extent as they interacted one another and this created a unique culture of Singapore.

In the recent year (as reported in the previous article), the influx of new immigrants to Singapore is on the increase. They are not only of the four existing races. They come from countries, such as Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Philippine, Thailand, Australia, European Countries and make their way to Singapore to find a better opportunity.

Therefore, it will not be a surprise when we go around walking and sight-seeing in town, we often hear unfamiliar languages spoken among the crowds. This indeed shows that the composition of Singapore society has changed.

It is also highlighted in the article "Singapore Population Growth in Four Decades" that the population growth in Singapore is mainly contributed by non-resident. In the last twenty years, Singapore citizen population is only increased by 0.58 million people whereas the non-citizen population by 1.36 million.

From the graph above, we can see that only 1 to 1.5 out of 10 people living in Singapore are foreigners in year 1970-1990. However, in year 2000-2004, the number of foreigners in Singapore rises to 2.5 out of 10 people (or 1 out of 4 is of foreign nationality). Moreover, this trend is on the rising side as seen in the graph. Today, this number statistically stands at 3.6 out of 10 people which means roughly 1 out of 3 people walking on any streets in Singapore is not a Singaporean. This number definitely does not apply to Orchard Road, where it is believed that there are many more foreigners than Singaporeans on this shopping street.

What a Job to Do in Zoo

This guy needs a job and decides to apply at the zoo. As it happened, their star attraction, a gorilla, had passed away the night before and they had carefully preserved his hide. They tell this guy that they'll pay him well if he would dress up in the gorillas skin and pretend to be the gorilla so people will keep coming to the zoo.

Well, the guy has his doubts, but Hey! He needs the money, so he puts on the skin and goes out into the cage. The people all cheer to see him. He plays up to the audience and they just eat it up. This isn't so bad, he thinks, and he starts really putting on a show, jumping around, beating his chest and roaring, swinging around.

During one acrobatic attempt, though, he loses his balance and crashes through some safety netting, landing square in the middle of the lion cage! As he lies there stunned, the lion roars.

He's terrified and starts screaming, "Help, Help, Help!" The lion races over to him, places his paws on his chest and hisses, "Shut up or we'll BOTH lose our jobs!

What to Remember in Making a Tough Decision

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one was still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track whereas the rest on the operational track.

The train was coming and you were just beside the track junction. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean that the lone child playing at the disused track would be sacrificed. On the other hand, would you rather let the train go as it was?

Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make.........

Choose the track whether you want to divert it or let it be.........

Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way. Exactly, to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was the rational decision that most people would make morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child who chose to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?

Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was.

This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, politics and society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority is, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority is. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. However, in this case he was sacrificed.

The great critic Leo Velski Julian who told the story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought that the train could come over to that disused track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids.

While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.

Annual Singapore Population Growth

The following Annual Population Growth graph shows that foreigners population growth in Singapore is closely related to economy. As examples, in year 2004 and 2009, there were dips for non-resident influx to Singapore. These were caused by economy crisis and economy recession respectively. Companies reduced their expenses and tightened their expansion, resulted in lower number of jobs created and more competitive job market. However in year 2009, the number of PRs shows the other way round.

Foreigners applied and being granted the PR status is increased to a double digit growth. This is inline with government policy to attract more people to take up PR status and eventually citizenship so as to support Singapore population number and economy in the long run.

Permanent resident can enjoy privileges which are not accessible to non-resident, such as cheaper education fee and medical care, employer CPF contribution, right to buy public housing, and so on. Incentives and benefits, such as housing, healthcare, education, childcare, etc are also differentiated between citizen and permanent resident, as mentioned in previous article.

Social activities, introducing Singapore unique culture, are organized to bring non-residents, permanent residents, and citizens closer. At the same time, it is meant to make foreigners feel home on this "land of opportunities" and assimilate them into society.

Singapore Population Growth in Four Decades

In the article "Singapore Population in Year 2009", it is mentioned that from year 1990 - 2009, total population in Singapore has jumped from around three million to almost five million people. However, this population growth is mainly contributed by non-resident.

For the additional 2 million population, Singapore citizen only chips-in 0.58 million people, which is around 30% of population growth.

The following graph breaks down the ten-year population growth by Singapore Resident classification.

From the graph above, it can be seen that total population grew significantly from year 1970 to 1990. This was aligned with the economic growth that Singapore had enjoyed during that period. Non-residents population grew a lot as more foreign talents, experts, expatriates, and foreign workers were needed to support the economic growth. In other words, their existence created jobs and their professionalism and expertise helped Singapore transformed into a first world country. However, despite of the new jobs creation and marvelous economic growth, they are being accused of stealing jobs from citizens and spoiling the job market.

Singapore's hunger of professionals continues its trend from year 1990 onwards as more foreigners come to Singapore to work and more permanent resident status is granted. However, from year 2000 onwards, it seems that the population growth contributed by each resident class declines.

Don't Ever Lie to Your Professor

This past fall semester, at Duke University, there were two sophomores who were taking Organic Chemistry and who did pretty well on all of the quizzes, midterms, labs, etc. Going into the final exam, they had solid "A's."

These two friends were so confident going into the final that the weekend before finals week (even though the Chem. final was on Monday), they decided to go up to University of Virginia to a party with some friends.

So they did this and had a great time. However, they ended up staying longer than they planned, and they didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they found Professor Aldric after the final and explained to him why they missed it. They told him that they went up to Virginia for the weekend, and had planned to come back in time to study, but that they had a flat tire on the way back and didn't have a spare and couldn't get help for a long time. So they were late getting back to campus.

Aldric thought this over and agreed that they could make up the final on the following day. The two guys were elated and relieved. So, they studied that night and went in the next day at the time that Aldric had told them.

He placed them in separate rooms, handed each of them a test booklet and told them to begin. They looked at the first problem, which was something simple about free radical formation and was worth 5 points.

"Cool" they thought, "this is going to be easy." They did that problem and then turned the page. They were unprepared, however, for what they saw on the next page.

It said: (95 points) "Which tire?"

However, due to the current economic recession, PM Lee has indicated that foreigners intake and PR status granting to be tightened and carefully controlled. While the flexible foreign worker policies adopted by government have added to the much-needed population numbers in Singapore, social stresses have also resulted. For example, there will be tendencies of forming ethnic enclaves in certain residential area. Besides, citizens have also been worrying for their rice bowls to be taken away due to higher competition for jobs.

From year 1970 - 2000, it can be seen that the number of people holding Singapore passport had steadily increased in double digit ten-year growth. However, for the next nine years, this number has decreased to single digit normalized ten-year growth. This can be due to falling birth rates, an ageing population, and increasing standard of living. Due to this, Singapore's standing in the global economy is challenged.

As part of the solutions to this issue, Singapore government attracts foreign talents, from regional as well as worldwide, to come to Singapore to work and contribute to Singapore economy. "Work hard and play hard in the first world city-country" is the message that government tries to spread. At the same time, government hopes that these foreign talents will find Singapore their home, get permanent resident status, settle down here, and take up Singapore citizenship.

On the other side, to existing citizens, government persuades them to get married and procreate. Benefits and incentives covering childcare, housing subsidy, and healthcare are given out for the sake of national interest.
