Ashlye's Chicken Tortilla Soup

I was going to share my dinner recipe for tonight and it ended up being a bust.. I saw this recipe from a friend on Facebook and thought it looked so yummy, so I am sharing it with you! If you try it out, let me know what you think.

Ashlye's Chicken Tortilla Soup

Ingredients:

Peppers *I used 1 jalapeno, 1 pablano, 2 ancient sweet and 1 bell*

3 Cups of black beans - drained

2 Cans of diced tomatoes

1 Can of corn - drained

3 Cloves of garlic, chopped thick and sauteed with onions

1/2 Large red onion, chopped and sauteed

2 Limes, 1 juiced and 1 sliced for serving

64 oz Can of chicken stock

Whole chicken- roasted and shredded *Can be purchased at most grocery stores already prepared*
1 Tablespoon Cumin

1/2 Tablespoon Cayenne
Salt & Pepper

Roast the peppers, seed them and add to the blender with tomatoes, garlic and sauteed onions. Blend to desire (if you prefer chunky or not). Add to stock pot and add chicken broth, then add black beans, corn, cumin and cayenne. Season with salt and pepper to taste. After shredding the chicken add to soup. Simmer for about 1 hour, gently stirring.

Serve: Garnish with shredded cheese, cilantro, onions and tortilla strips.

At just 19 months old my little girl found interest in the potty. She on her very own said "pee pee on the potty," I took her and she went. This came much faster than I had planned and I gotta say, being the cloth diaper addict I am, I was a little saddened by the thought of losing my cloth. That being said, I found the next step from cloth diapers, cloth training pants. Super Skivvies is the training pant equivalent to fluff, they are so very adorable and offer a bit of protection against the accidents that are bound to happen. I love that these adorable training pants come in an assortment of colors/patterns and have a bamboo insert that is removable to allow for a transition into big kid undies.

I love this two piece system, not only does it allow for the Super Skivvies to get cleaner, and dry faster, but I can add another insert and increase absorbency, or remove it and have less.

Even after several washes, they are still vibrant as ever.

When I first put Super Skivvies on my daughter, I was so proud of her, she wore them for 5+ hours, asking to potty about every half hour to an hour and going #1 & #2. Right before bedtime, I took her to the potty and she went, however, soon after, she wet her pants. Staybridge Suites: A Home Away From Home

Often, I am in dire need of some rest and relaxation, a mini vacation. I need to be anywhere but home, where the clutter and chaos from my daily life is. The only problem is, with gas prices, food costs, car rental and everything else that goes along with taking a trip somewhere, it is impossible to afford and still have the ability not to cringe at every penny being spent. Luckily, I have found the perfect "vacation spot", it is about 20 minutes away, local, yet "far far" away. The Staybridge Suites in Kansas City- Independence, MO is my new home away from home. The staff is like family, they are so kind to each other and their guests. The two different suites I have stayed in offer a ton of space and privacy, there is a 1 bedroom with a king size bed and bath and a living room with a fully loaded kitchenette, even down to the wine glasses and cork screw. The last time I stayed there I got a 2 bedroom suite, one room had a king bed and the other room had 2 twin size beds, both rooms had their own bathroom. They also offer a crib so my baby can safely be in the other room offering privacy to my fiance and I. We always attempt to make plans to go to dinner and a movie, however when we get there we never want to leave, and they make it so easy to stay. Each morning we would get up and have their complementary hot breakfast and on the week nights they offer dinner. Being that I cloth diaper, they make it even easier on me, with the complementary washer and dryers on site. With all of the complementary amenities that the Staybridge Suites offer, I could not imagine ever staying anywhere else again. We were able to enjoy home made chicken alfredo *in the kitchenette and watch Captain America *with the complementary DVD player.

I was able to take my family to see the preview of The Secret World Of Arrietty last weekend. I was pretty excited because I really wanted to see this movie when I first saw the trailer, it reminded me of my childhood, watching The Indian in the Cupboard. There are so many "cartoon" movies for children that most of them are starting to look the same, so, this being an anime was great for me. My 6 year old liked this movie, she really liked the two main characters Arrietty and Shawn. I do feel that this movie had a lot of slow points and is more for older children, maybe a mature 6 year old and up. That being said, we enjoyed the show, I personally liked Arrietty's mother, she was funny.

We use hemp because of its durability, absorbency, and it's natural anti-microbial properties. This means your baby will be protected naturally from bacteria, mold, mildew and fungus.

Furthermore using hemp, instead of cotton, really is better for the environment. Hemp does not deplete the soil; in fact hemp leaves return nitrogen back to the soil, which improves soil fertility, therefore requiring less fertilizer for subsequent rotated crops.

Interesting Factoids about Hemp:

Did you know ...

Hemp can displace cotton which is grown with massive amounts of chemicals harmful to people and the environment. Fifty percent of the world's pesticides are sprayed on cotton.
Hemp fibers are longer, stronger, more absorbent, and more mildew-resistant than cotton. The original Levi Strauss jeans made for the Sierra gold miners were made of hemp sailcloth.
At a volume level of 81%, hemp oil is the richest known source of polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (the “good” fats). It is quite high in some essential amino acids, including gamma linoleic acid (GLA), a very rare nutrient also found in mother's milk.
Hemp is good for the soil in which it's grown, as opposed to other crops that deplete the soil of nutrients.
You can't get high from industrial hemp.
Industrial hemp actually poses a threat to marijuana growers by cross-pollinating with their high THC plants, and greatly reducing the THC level in subsequent generations.

I personally have to agree, I have never come across another diaper that has soaked up so much pee and still NEVER leaked. In fact, I have taken this diaper off of my baby after it had been on her much longer than I expected. I put a different brand diaper on her and the OTHER diaper leaked within 30 minutes. Had I just kept the BabyKicks on my LO, she would have stayed dry, for sure.

BabyKicks has adjusted the sizing of the 3g Pocket Diaper just a little. The newborn snap has been moved to the edge of the wing (instead of between the 1st & 2nd snap). And, all the wing snaps have been moved about 3/16" toward the end of the wing, to allow for slightly larger sizing options. This small detail has made a big difference in the sizing of the diaper, for chunky thighs especially (in a good way).

Through the eyes of my 6 year old:
This was the first time my 6 year old had seen this movie. Of course, when I put the Blu-Ray in and the Disney opening scene came on with Cinderella's castle, she got so excited. She knew she was about to watch something special. We both loved how vibrant the color is on the Blu-Ray, so different from when I used to watch it on VHS. My daughters favorite scene is "Where they are eating spaghetti and they are eating the same noodle", I have to agree with her, that was always my favorite scene. My daughter enjoyed this movie so much, she wanted to watch it again after it was over. So, We did :)

I personally liked watching the Bonus scenes of Walt Disney's home videos. I shared this with my daughter and since we have been to Disney World once, she recognized some of the stuff that he was creating in the beginning of Disney World. I think it is really neat to know some of the history behind the theme park and I will for sure be looking for the fire station when we make it back.

Silver Jeans Co. Review - The Perfect Fit!

Being a plus size woman, finding the right jeans can seem daunting. Believe me, I was given about 3 choices. Plain, Ugly and Wrong fitting, until, I found Silver Jeans Co. Extended Line, sizes 12-26. It was really like the heavens opened up... OK, that's a little dramatization, but really, it was like "FINALLY, Some is listening!" If you know me, you know I am ALWAYS in my jeans. They are like a second skin to me. I like to dress my jeans up with a nice top or get comfortable with a t-shirt, I have even gone out for a night of fun with heels and a sexy top, ALL in my Silver Jeans Co. Extended line. I know you probably think I am crazy that I am going on about these jeans but it is the total truth. The fit is perfect, they offer different lengths, so no more problems with high water jeans. They offer a mix of different colors and washes from light to dark and in between. You can get jeans with a more warn, grungier look or a crisp clean look. I have had about 6 pair of Silver Jeans and will NEVER ever get a different brand of jean again. I am serious about that.

Here is a true story:

I was at a store that sells Silver Jeans, I was buying another pair, when another shopper was trying to find the perfect jean. She asked the girl at the counter for a jean that would hold up, not stretch out after being warn all day and would make her tush look awesome. I couldn't help myself, I said, "Silvers, You gotta get yourself a pair of Silver Jeans!" the girl was so surprised about the different styles she could find in her size and after trying them on bought 2 pair!

Now, the only thing that is a little hard to swallow, is the price, for anywhere between $80-$125 you can get yourself into the perfect ever jean. As I have said before, I have had 6 pairs of Silver Jeans, I buy one pair a time and I wear them DAILY! so, spending that amount on a pair of jeans isn't as bad as it seems. They last for a long time, they look fabulous and make me feel great in them. So, that in and of itself is priceless!

These are the pair I was fortunate enough to review, Aiko Bootcut, obviously these images are not me, but you can tell how great the details are on these jeans. Worth every penny.

Pedipeds Original: Now with a More Slip Resistant Sole

I love Pediped shoes. I have loved Pediped ever since my now 6 year old was 1. I was looking for the perfect shoes for my girls, especially learning how to walk. I can't stand seeing little ones trying to walk in clunky shoes and Pediped not only offered a Soft Soled Leather Bottom Shoe, but their shoes are ADORABLE! You can find a style for any occasion. I was happy to find out that they have come out with a more slip resistant sole. In the picture below, the shoe on the right is my first ever Pediped Purchase, it has a smooth leather sole. The Shoe on the right is the NEW diamond tread. I love how it says Pediped on the bottom.

The shoe on the left is from my first daughter 5 years ago, they are still in nearly perfect condition and my baby wears them all the time.

These will be perfect for spring/summer. I even put them on her now with a pair of socks. They are adorable with a pair of jeans, skirts and will be super cute with shorts.

Cheeky Fluff One Sized All-in-2 Diaper review & Giveaway!

I am proud to introduce a new diaper maker, Cheeky Fluff. I was contacted by Rachel, the owner of Cheeky Fluff Cloth Diapers & Accessories to review one of her adorable diaper creations. I gladly chose one of my favorite prints, the Pink Giraffes.

Cheeky Fluff Diapers are a one size, all in 2 diaper, that fits baby roughly from 15-35 pounds. The adorable mix of fabric options are unlike any other diaper I have in my stash. They come with 2 soakers, 1 for smaller babies, 1 for bigger babies and you can snap them together to offer more absorbency.

The smaller soaker is made up of 6 layers of 100% organic cotton fleece, while the larger one is made of 5 layers of cotton fleece. When doubled up that is 11 layers of super thirsty protection for your baby. The best thing about the soakers is that the snap is sewn in the inside of the fabric, so the plastic is not touching my babies skin.

The soaker snaps into the back of the diaper, insuring it stays in place.

When I first received this diaper, there were issues with the elastic. Thankfully Rachel offered to fix the problems ASAP. She replaced the elastic with stronger, better elastic and it fits perfectly. Being a WAHM diaper, I was afraid it might leak. I was wrong. This diaper is not only one of the cutest diapers I have ever seen, and am proud to own, but it works amazingly. I have not had 1 leak in this diaper and actually use it daily. My poor baby had a stomach bug and what happened in her diaper, should not be discussed in detail, I was SO thrilled that her Cheeky Fluff held up to the explosion.

She is set on 1 rise down, and with the thoughtfulness of the snaps, I can get a snug fit around the waist by wrapping the tab across each other.

There is ZERO gaping around the legs!

Just look how cute this is :) And it is so trim!

Last but surely not least, one of my favorite features on any diaper is the wrap, snap and go feature. I can wrap it up when it is soiled, throw it in the wet bag and not have worries about reaching in and touching nastiness.

Disney's Aladdin at the Kansas City Star Light Children's Theatre

I love going to Star Light Amphitheater in Kansas City. It has turned into a tradition, going with my Fiance's grandmother and my 6 year old. It brings shows that we know and love to stage and makes for a memorable and joyful night.

I was so excited to see that they have extended the theater to an indoor stage for children, at the beautiful Muriel Kauffman Theatre.

We surprised our girl by taking them to see Disney's Aladdin. They had no idea what was going on. When we got into the theater and my 6 year old started hearing the familiar music she lit up, eyes open wide with a huge smile. Throughout the show, the characters interacted with the audience and at times there were dancers in the audience which really brought the show to life. I have to say, the Gene stole the show for me though. He was cracking jokes about current day things and singing to current day music, causing for a new spin on what we know and love as Aladdin. If you do get a chance to make it to Kansas City, or you live in Kansas City, you will want to get out to see Disney's Aladdin at the Kansas City Star Light Children's Theatre.

My daughters favorite thing about the show was the carpet! I can't tell you any more about it, you will have to go see for yourself!

Wordless Wednesday: Day at the Beach '07

Our first visit to the beach, we went to Clearwater Beach, Florida. The water was a perfect temp of 89 degrees, the sky's were clear and the sand was perfect white and so clean!

We had a total blast.

I wish I could just go right back and have more time there.

Oh Katy One Size Pocket Diaper Review & Giveaway!!

I have heard a lot about the Oh Katy One Size Pocket Diaper and have wanted to try one out for a while. I was more than happy to get a chance at reviewing this diaper. I picked the really pretty Violet Oh Katy diaper and the color is very vibrant.

As you can see this pocket diaper has squared off tabs, I wasn't sure if this would make much of a difference, but it really does. Having the squared off tabs allows for a trimmer fit, even better, this diaper has overlapping buttons allowing for you to fit a super skinny baby. Since this is a One Size Pocket Diaper, younger babies will get great use out of the overlap snaps.

See, how well it fits around my LO's belly?

I would say that the snaps and the elastic diaper is what I look at most when doing my reviews. When a diaper has great snaps and elastic, its almost guaranteed to fit my LO. Below are two images of the snaps that make this diaper great. The snaps in the middle of the image are hip snaps. When placing this diaper on baby, snap the hip snaps first, it will allow a snug fit not only around the waist but also around the legs, insuring no wing droop or gaping.

The Oh Katy One Size Pocket Diaper comes with two inserts, 1 full size adjustable insert and 1 newborn insert that can be used as a doubler for extra absorbency for when baby is older.

The Oh Katy Pocket Diaper stuffs from the front, and the pocket is wide enough for even daddy's hands. While I understand having a want for front load pockets, I am not a huge fan of them because it seems that my little girl tends to mess more in the front of her diaper than the back. So, I could give or take this feature.

As you can see, this diaper fits snugly around the waist and legs. The super soft elastic leaves no marks and still keeps in messes.

Another Must Have feature for diapers is how it wraps up and contains soiled diapers. No more reaching into your wetbag and getting your hands into a mess.

Once this package arrived I was eager to put it together and get the parent unit charging, so I could use it that night. First impression is that it is cute. The handheld device fits right in my hands and is even able to be hooked onto your belt. I started by putting the rechargeable batteries in the parent unit *Yes, they are provided* but had a very difficult time getting the battery door off, then back on was a bit of a hassle as well. I did however like that the screw that is used does not come out, it stays inside the battery door so there is no losing it. I placed it on the charging station and then went to set up the baby unit. After letting the parent unit charge for 10 hours I started playing with the settings. I highly recommend getting to know how to set the settings up just right, after a few nights of not hearing my girls in the room I figured out that I didn't set the sensitivity correctly, so now it is on high sensitivity and high volume. I can truly hear everything that is going on now... even the light breathing of both of my girls.

Parent Unit on Docking System.

My 6 year olds Favorite feature of this monitor, is the 2 way speaker. Just press this button on the side and talk to your LO. When you do this, you will not be able to hear baby while you are pressing this button.

Look how easy it fits in my hand, it tells you the temperature in babies room, and lights up at the top when baby is making noises. This feature is perfect when I am in a loud space and can't fully hear what is going on.

Here is the Baby Unit, it tells you the temperature in the room and has a night light on the back.

As you can see, in the back is a microphone that can be adjusted be pointed closer to baby.

Living in any size of home, I feel that a great baby monitor can be priceless, with the addition of the baby sensor pad, is even more valuable. I couldn't stop thinking of how so many babies are dying from S.I.D.S or are reportedly being abducted from their cribs at night.. if they had a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Digital Sensor Pad Monitor, maybe their story would be different.

I love my local cloth diapering mommies, I am even more excited when I find a local cloth diapering mommy shop owner. That's what brings me to my next review from MomBecks.com. I was sent a Tots Bots Easy Fit AIO diaper. I am normally not a fan of Aplix closure, but Tots Bots provides a super thick Velcro that is so easy to use, stays put and is above others, just like this diaper. The Tots Bots Easy Fit is so very easy to use *a grandma diaper* and is super thin and absorbent.

Here are the product details:
"An exceptionally luxurious and soft one-piece diaper with a totally simplified stuffing system. The innovative design of this diaper features the ease of an all-in-one with the flexibility of a pocket diaper. The super thirsty bamboo/microfiber insert is actually attached to the diaper, making the Easy Fit a remarkable all-in-one diaper with many of the benefits of a two piece system -- fast drying and easy to clean. The liner consists of 2 layers. Ultra soft rayon made from bamboo fibers against baby's tender skin actually absorbs 70% more quickly than cotton - on contact - no run-off leaking out the side of the diaper when baby pees! And an ultra absorbent layer of 100% polyester microfiber basically doubles the absorbency. Protective side guards of anti-wicking, soft brushed polyester prevent compression leaking. See the super long bamboo/microfiber insert? Simply fold it into the pocket and you end up with a super absorbent diaper. When the diaper is soiled, simply fold in the Aplix Tabs and throw in the wash. No need to remove inserts because this all agitates out in the wash.

Here is a close up of the insert, you can see the super soft bamboo on one side and the microfiber on the inside.

Once the insert is folded in the pocket, just pull this flap out to help protect against leaks.

Here is the inside of this diaper, you can see how stretchy the elastic is around the legs and back. When my 24 pound baby wears this, there are no gapes anywhere. No Leaks! not even during nap time.
