</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">When we decide that we are going to lose weight, we begin to think of all of the things we need to do in order to reach our goals.</span><br />

</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Eat better.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Consume fewer calories.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Drink more water.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Exercise.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Where many of us run into trouble is in trying to tackle all of these all at once. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We can go full force and keep our momentum for about a week, maybe two, and then we begin to experience burnout. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We start choosing sandwiches over salads. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">We stop counting our calories.  </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">We drink less water and more coffee (guilty!). </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">We drop the exercise.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">How are we supposed to be successful on our journey to weight loss?</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;">We need to tackle one thing at a time and work exclusively on that for a week or two. Once we develop a habit in one area, we can then work on a new area until it becomes a habit as well. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">I am excited to report that my month of May went much better than all the months so far this year.&nbsp; Not because of exercise, though.&nbsp; I have to admit that I did not exercise much.&nbsp; However, I still reduced my weight by more* than 18 pounds.&nbsp; I started really REALLY actively DOing the program I started on May 5th.&nbsp; I started a couple weeks before that with reading and study to begin the process of changing my brain in the ways necessary to make this program really work.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">DOing the program consists of eating differently both in what and when.&nbsp; It&#8217;s been much easier than I expected, but still difficult.&nbsp; The progress on the scale is worth the effort I&#8217;ve put forth.&nbsp; In fact, since I thought it would be more difficult, I&#8217;m sure even less progress would still be worth the effort. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">The method I&#8217;m using is difficult.&nbsp; I&#8217;m going to tell you straight.&nbsp; It&#8217;s not one of those &#8216;one-shot wonders,&#8217; or a magic pill, or some &#8220;thin in 6&#8243; programs.&nbsp; It&#8217;s a method of working through brain/thought changes (starting with the reading/studying I told you about) to bring about lasting change.&nbsp; Of course, lasting will only be proved in me by time, but there are many others who have maintained their change for yearS to prove the program (when applied)! &nbsp; It will, of course, only work by consistent application to the principles of the program &#8211; both those that pertain to the mind and those that pertain to the body.&nbsp; In my opinion, based on observation of thin people, this program seems to teach folks HOW to be thin.&nbsp; What to do, how it to it and, to some extent, when to do it!&nbsp; I love that because I do not have a model of that to reference in such a way that makes sense for me to apply it to myself.&nbsp; I mean, I can see, upon reflection, that this program is or is similar to how thin people stay that way, but didn&#8217;t see the steps and principles prior to reading the book.&nbsp; </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">One of our son&#8217;s favorite movies is Disney&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Robinsons.&#8221; It is a sweet story of a little boy named Lewis who is able to go forward in time to meet his future family and self. Lewis discovers that eventually his life&#8217;s motto will be &#8220;Keep Moving Forward.&#8221;</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This month, God has had to remind me through His Word that even in weight loss &#8220;Keep Moving Forward&#8221; is an important phrase to remember.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Exactly one month ago today, my husband and I headed out on a cruise to celebrate our 10th anniversary. I wish I could say I had reached my personal goal (<a href="http://www.onerollatatime.com/2014/01/who-am-i-and-what-am-i-doing-here.html" style="color: #1155cc;" target="_blank">Who Am I and What Am I Doing Here?</a>), but I hadn&#8217;t. I was close &#8211; only 4 pounds away.&nbsp;</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Then we went on our cruise. Food was available to us 24 hours a day. Good, delicious food. Food that made my taste buds dance with every bite. Food that I made a conscious choice to enjoy and not regret&#8230;.. until I stepped on the scale a few days ago.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I had a very real moment of deflation.&nbsp;</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I decided to stop thinking about the foods I had eaten which sabotaged my steady pace towards weight loss. I can&#8217;t do anything about it now anyway. What&#8217;s done is done.&nbsp;</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">I had to make a conscious decision to look forward- to maintain my focus, to envision myself wearing my goal outfit, to plan out what I will be eating in the future- so I can move forward.</span></div>

<h3 style="text-align: center;">Knowing What Needs to Change &#8211; And Changing It!</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">One of the hardest things in weight loss can actually be knowing what you need to change. &nbsp;Or maybe you know what to change but don&#8217;t know where to start. </p>
<p>Always began this weight loss journey with your doctor. &nbsp;Sometimes it&#8217;s just not as simple as eat less &amp; healthier and exercise more. &nbsp;Sometimes there are other issues going on with your body and those may need to be addressed first. &nbsp;So, make an appointment and get a complete physical!</p>
<p>Once you know what you need to change it&#8217;s time to make that change &#8211; make it your new habit! &nbsp;I truly believe in making this not just a weight loss journey (because in the beginning that&#8217;s exactly what it is) but a lifestyle change. </p>
<h4>5 Steps to Making That Change:</h4>
<ol>
<li><b>Create a Master List.</b> &nbsp;We have areas we want/need to change. &nbsp;Some are minor and some are pretty major. &nbsp;Create a list (in no particular order) of areas you need to improve on. &nbsp;This can and most likely will, be an on going list for you. &nbsp;Be sure to mark them off as you feel you&#8217;ve accomplished each one.</li>
<li><b>Set Your Goals.</b> &nbsp;Look over your Master List and decide a specific order in which you&#8217;d like to attack each goal. &nbsp;Which area is most important to you? &nbsp;Which one needs to come first in order to accomplish another one? &nbsp;Give your highest to lowest priority.</li>
<li><b>Choose 3-5 Goals Each Month.</b> &nbsp;Begin with your highest priority goals and assign them (3-5 at a time) to a specific month. &nbsp;</li>
<li><b>Write It Down.</b> &nbsp;Write down your goals each month along with your actual plan of attack. &nbsp;Now I am a firm believer of giving a lot of details to my plan for each goal. &nbsp;For me I need to know what to do each step of the way or I will deviate. &nbsp;</li>
<li><b>Attack It!</b> &nbsp;Yes &#8211; I mean ATTACK IT! &nbsp;Jump on each goal and own it! &nbsp;Be sure to evaluate your day/week each time to remember how well you did on the great days and to inspire you to push harder on the difficult days.</li>
</ol>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Grapefruit! &nbsp;My secret weapon this week was grapefruit (which I picked up by accident thinking they were oranges). &nbsp;I added grapefruit to my lunch this week, making sure it was the final taste in my mouth. &nbsp;Let me tell you that really curbs my walking in the kitchen and sneaking a little piece of chocolate &#8211; it tastes horrible after grapefruit! &nbsp;I truly believe this is what has worked best for me this week!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">My children and I traveled to Utah and back and then the whole family took a trip to Ft. Lauderdale all within the first 16 days of April.&nbsp; The drive to Utah was accomplished in two days each way and the Ft. Lauderdale trip was a long one.&nbsp; All of it was wonderfully exhausting.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">I did get a bit more walking and movement in during all the traveling.&nbsp; No &#8220;official&#8221; exercising during that part of the month, but I was definitely more active.&nbsp; I prefer natural movement as part of my day over a special exercise video or similar.&nbsp; How about you?&nbsp; Do you prefer incorporating movement into your day?&nbsp; Or do you prefer a gym or video routine?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">The rest of the month was less steady than previously, but also more steady (exercising) than I have been really recently.&nbsp; So, while I still have a lot of improvement to make compared to when I started walking daily a year ago (April 11, 2013), I&#8217;m doing better than February and March of this year.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Doesn&#8217;t the toughness just &#8220;get&#8221; you when it comes to the everyday-ness of doing things?&nbsp; I mean, I&#8217;m good at doing many things when I first start.&nbsp; A year later?&nbsp; Maybe not so good.&nbsp; Of course, lots of factors play into how well I&#8217;m doing, but maybe shouldn&#8217;t.&nbsp; *sigh*&nbsp; Just working on putting one foot in front of the other currently.&nbsp; Even baby steps get us to where we want to go!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Can you believe it&#8217;s almost May? &nbsp;I mean seriously &#8211; that means Summer is just around the corner already. &nbsp;Yikes! &nbsp;Not that I don&#8217;t have plenty of areas I would like to improve but my arms are one of those body parts that are really difficult to hide. &nbsp;Especially once the Summer heat sets in. &nbsp;So this month let&#8217;s focus on our arms!</p>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Time to tone and strengthen our chest, triceps and shoulders one crunch at a time! &nbsp;Starting with 10 push ups on day 1 and adding just 2 more every 5 days (resting on the 5th day). &nbsp;By the end of May we will be doing 22 push ups a day! &nbsp;Be sure to check out this tutorial on <a href="http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercises.asp?exercise=63" target="_blank">Push Ups</a> from SparkPeople before you begin.</p>
<p>*By the way &#8211; this is just one option. &nbsp;If this is to difficult or easy for you, please don&#8217;t hesitate to modify it and let us know what you&#8217;re up to.</p></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">For me the best way to keep myself on track is to keep a check list going so I can easily see where I&#8217;m going and what I&#8217;ve already accomplished. &nbsp;When it comes to fitness I also find posting it on my fridge helps me on many levels! &nbsp;Making myself look at this challenge before entering my fridge helps my eating pattern too.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">I am amazed and sad with myself at how easy it is for me to become sidetracked and lose my focus. &nbsp;It&#8217;s all to easy for little things to challenge journey on bettering myself (eating better and consistently working out). &nbsp;Now throw in a few major things becoming problems in my world and I have not only fallen off the wagon but it has officially run me over!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">This is not something that I am proud of myself for. &nbsp;In fact I&#8217;m pretty ashamed of it. &nbsp;I think of myself as a stronger person than this. &nbsp;BUT all of the signs are telling me that I&#8217;m NOT as strong as I think. &nbsp;I&#8217;m cranky, bloated, and the scale doesn&#8217;t lie.</div>

<div style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Yep &#8211; that&#8217;s me &#8211; up 10 pounds! &nbsp;The stress in my life has officially taken over. &nbsp;More importantly &#8211; I <b>allowed</b> it to take over. &nbsp;I lost my focus.</div>

<div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>So how do I get my focus back?</i></div>

<div style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">After talking this week with some very dear friends and truly sharing what all I&#8217;ve been going through I&#8217;ve come to this:&nbsp;</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"></div>
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;">I need to begin in the Word. &nbsp;Yes, I said the Bible. &nbsp;I have spent too much time thinking and focusing on the hard times and I have lost sight of God&#8217;s plan for me. &nbsp;So that is my number one fix &#8211; read the Bible, talk with God and write His Word &#8211; get to know Him again. &nbsp;I know His plan does not include me doing THIS to my body.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Establish a routine again. &nbsp;Even the simplest of things need to be re-established again. Bed time routine needs to come back (washing face, keeping my prayer journal, writing His Word), Morning Routine (Reading His Word, WORK OUT, HEALTHY breakfast, Clean up for the day). &nbsp;I know this seems silly, but truly my routine in these areas have just not been consistent at all lately.</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Work Out: When I say work out, I mean WORK OUT HARD CORE. &nbsp;None of this going through the motions stuff. &nbsp;I need to get back to finishing my work out and wondering how I actually did it!</li>
<li style="text-align: justify;">Enjoy the Process. &nbsp;I know that sounds crazy &#8211; who enjoys dieting? &nbsp;But I want to start with the mind set of &#8220;this is an amazing opportunity to show myself, my girls and my husband that I can better myself and change my ways &#8211; with God&#8217;s help.&#8221; &nbsp;Yes I&#8217;m going to have days that just make me want to scream. &nbsp;Yes I&#8217;m going to want to throw in the towel just sit and eat come chips. Yes I&#8217;m going to cry my way through more than one work out. &nbsp;But I&#8217;m going to smile in the end because I will be healthier.</li>
</ul>

<div><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">I have one hurdle that I struggle with every day and it’s not what you are thinking.&nbsp; I LOVE working out.&nbsp; Well, I love to eat also.&nbsp; But neither of these are the problem.&nbsp; Here’s my deep, dark secret…I am an emotional eater. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">There…I said it.&nbsp; Does that make me feel better?&nbsp; No not really since it doesn’t change the daily struggle.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">I wanted to take a minute and share this with you since I KNOW that someone out there is struggling with the exact same issue.&nbsp; It’s hard.&nbsp; I know.&nbsp; I completely understand what you are going through.&nbsp; You want to eat when you are celebrating.&nbsp; Eat when you are mad.&nbsp; Depressed, etc…All the time, no matter the emotion.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">Food will never make you or me feel better.&nbsp; It’s not a way to get through the emotions that are bothering us and it’s not a way to celebrate anything.&nbsp; Well, don’t go over board when celebrating (because we know there will be food at celebrations) and definitely don’t make food a reward.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">Here’s a few ways that I have taken back some of the control that food has over me.&nbsp; Now, I haven’t figured out how to get rid of the hold completely and struggle DAILY with my emotions and food, BUT there are a few things that might help you out.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">I like to read.&nbsp; So, when my emotions overcome me and I want to walk to the kitchen to get something to temporarily pacify myself, I will turn to a good book first.&nbsp; I’m not telling you that you have to read, but I am saying that filling your time with something that you love might take your mind off your emotions and thought of food.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">I listen to music.&nbsp; Music has been proven to have an effect on moods so when I am feeling down and want that candy bar that is sitting right there for the “happy” feeling that I might get from the sugar, I will find some MUSIC that makes me happy.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: .25in; text-indent: -.25in;"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt;">I have gotten started with essential oils recently and through studying (A LOT) I have found that there are oils that can suppress your appetite and even make you feel happier.&nbsp; The best part is all you have to do it smell them.&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div>I love having something to relax with in the evening with my hubby. Usually it is a cup of coffee and a granola bar&#8230; or popcorn&#8230;. or a small bag of chips if I have the calories left over in my day and can &#8220;afford&#8221; it.</div>

<div style="background-color: transparent;">However, those snacks do not quite fill me as much as I would like and usually leave me wanting more.</div>

<div style="background-color: transparent;">Instead, I have been making smoothies for us to enjoy. They are much more filling&nbsp;<span style="font-style: italic;">(because making a smoothie keeps the fiber of the whole fruit, while juicing removes the fiber leaving the juice)</span>, leave no guilt after the fact, and they are so easy to make&nbsp;<span style="font-style: italic;">(isn&#8217;t that what attracts us to the not-so-good-for-us stuff&#8230;. how easy it is to reach out for and get?)</span>.&nbsp;</div>

<div style="background-color: transparent;">1 cup berries (I&#8217;ve used strawberries, blueberries, strawberries AND blueberries, and frozen packages of individual berries or mixed berries)</div>
