Remember any medium of any size will be accepted. Make sure you email the photos of your submission along with your name and a short description of the piece. Pictures must be submitted no later than July 24th.

Michael Jackson's dead!?!?!?!

Wow! I couldn't believe my ears today when I first heard the news of Michael Jackson's death. So surreal! God rest his soul. They stipulated that he suffered from a cardiac arrest, but we'll soon hear from his family.
When EMT's first arrived on the scene they found that he wasn't breathing. By the time they got him to the hospital it was too late. He had already been dead for hours by the time it was released to the press.
He will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P MJ

Nation Wide Artist Collaboration Project

So I had this great idea the other night to put together a Nation Wide Artist Collaboration Project. The point of this project is to get a diverse group of artists (about 5 or so) to each creatively contribute to a single painting roughly 8x10. Each artist involved is asked to video record their progress, submit their footage to the website, and pass the painting on to the next artist. The footage provided by each artist will be edited together and posted to this blog for other artists to see. After the painting is sent back to me from the last participant, it is then auctioned off by a charity or by NWACP to raise money for Charitable organizations. It's up to the artist as to what they chose to put on the piece while in their hands; any and all mediums are welcome. This is our opportunity to be part of a creative movement as well as help a good cause, so help me make this HUGE.
If you would like to be apart of the movement, please email me. Make sure you put Nation Wide Artist Collaboration Project in the subject line and include your name (or username) and address or P.O. box the painting is to be sent to. The first 5 artists to subscribe will get on the list for this first collaboration. Don't worry if you're not on there this time, there will be more opportunities to come.
Once I have gotten a list of the 5 artists, I will post a video announcing the participants, instructions for the process, and my initial contribution. See ya soon!

Monthly Art Contest

Every month I will be holding an Art Contest for any and all my readers. This is your chance to flex your artistic muscle. I will post instructions along with a topic the 1st of every month. All you have to do is submit your piece as a digital image to me via email by the third Friday of every month for consideration. I will then choose a winner and post their image along with a short Artists Bio to be featured on my blog as "Artist of the Month".

Drawing 101

Drawing is a way to convey your ideas. You must learn to draw if you want to express yourself artistically in which ever medium you choose to focus. There is a lot to learn, but it doesn't have to be tedious.

There are artists who have gotten away with mediocrity in their skills, and who are able to hide their lack of abilities with beautiful color. But, not many of us are naturally gifted with an eye for color.

The best way of learning how to draw is by constantly sketching and observing your surroundings, paying close attention to your tonal values and breaking everything up into small and simple shapes. Using basic forms such as triangles circles, squares etc. to break down larger, more complex subjects will allow you to focus on proportions and scale. Don't sweat the small stuff. Leave details for finished drawings.

You can sketch things around you: kitchen utensils, furniture, the view from a window, people at work and at play, pets, etc.

Vary your sketching, working sometimes in outline, stressing the contour aspect of drawing; at other times concentrate on light and shade. The main thing is to keep drawing. I will touch the subject of perspective in a later post.

10 mistakes beginning artists make in their drawings

Because drawing is often self-taught, you tend to keep making mistakes much longer than when a teacher is available to help. Here are the 10 most common mistakes beginners make when they learn to draw.

1. Drawing With a Hard Pencil

If you don't have very dark shadows and the whole picture is rather pale, check your pencil. Are you using a Number2 (HB) pencil? These are too hard to draw with (though they are handy for light shading). Get a B, 2B and 4B for darker values.

If you are just starting out, the low-cost, quick solution is to choose a 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, and 4H from a reputable artist's range. A serious beginner might want to go for a full set in a tin, or try clutch pencils. Pencils are relatively inexpensive, so experiment to find what suits you best.

Keep in mind that B stands for Black and H for hard. B pencils will give you the darkest shades the higher the number and H pencils will be the lighter the higher the number. You will be using 3 to 4 out of this list for each drawing to get the depth and contrast for each of your compositions.

2. Portraits from Flash Photography

This is the major cause of beginner drawing problems. Using flash photography flattens the features, giving you nothing to work with. When the person is facing you, it is very hard to see the modeling of the face as the perspective vanishes behind their head. Have the person turn slightly to one side so you can model their face, with natural lighting to give good skin tones, and a natural expression to show their real personality.

3. Incorrect Head Proportions

Because of the way we focus on a person's features, we usually draw them too big and squash the rest of the head. More about proportions in a later article.

4. Twisted Features

Because we are used to looking at a person straight-on, we naturally try to make their features look level when we draw them. If their head is on an angle, this results in strange distortions in the picture. Sketch guidelines first to ensure that the features are on the same angle as the rest of the face. More on human form later.

5. Pet Drawings from Human Eye Level

When you take a photograph standing up, you are looking down at your pet. They have to look up, and you end up with their head seeming much bigger than their body, and a rather odd expression on their face. Have someone distract them so they aren't staring down the lens, and squat down so the camera is at their head level. You'll get a much better reference photo.

6. Being Afraid of Black

Often when shading, the shadows don't go past dark gray. You are limiting the depth in your drawing if your value range is too restricted. Put a piece of black paper at the corner of your drawing, and don't be afraid to go dark. Really dark. This will give your drawings a more realistic effect and really make them pop.

7. Outlining in Value Drawings

When value drawing, you are creating an illusion with areas of tonal value. When you use a hard drawn line to define an edge, you disrupt this illusion. Let edges be defined by two different areas of tonal value meeting (i.e. shadows).

8. Drawing on the Wrong Paper

If your drawing is pale, it might be the paper. Some cheap papers have a sheen on the surface that is too smooth to grab the particles off the pencil. A thick notepad has too much 'give' under the pencil to allow you to apply enough pressure. Try a basic photocopy/office paper, or check the art store for cheap sketch paper. Place a piece of card under a couple of sheets to give a firmer surface. If you are trying to do even shading, some sketch papers can be too coarse, giving an uneven texture. Try a hot-pressed Bristol board or similar smooth drawing paper.

9. Scribbled Foliage

Don't use circular scribbles to draw foliage. Use more convex shaped scumbling (like crescent shapes and scribbly calligraphic marks) to draw the shadows in and around clusters of foliage. Your trees will look much more realistic.

10. Wiry, Pencil-Line Hair and Grass

If you draw every hair or blade of grass as a pencil line, you'll end up with a horrible, wiry, unnatural mess. Use feathery pencil-strokes to draw the shadows and dark foliage behind areas of grass. More on this subject on a later post.

*Remember*
No one is born knowing how to draw. It all comes with practice. You will see that after reading these Don'ts, you will approach your drawings in a different way ultimately leading to progress and evolution in your art. Just make a conscious effort to pay more attention to the world around you. Notice the shades, shadows, and highlights. Nothing really has a hard edge; it's all about light (or tonal value).

Music has always had the power to evoke strong feelings of euphoria, sadness, joy, love, and anger. It can bring back past memories of lost loved ones, fun times with friends, or visions of our youth. I, as many of you in this tough economic strain, have been through a lot so far this year. I've suffered the loss of loved ones, stressed over school and finances, struggled to find a job, experienced love, met new friends, lost old ones, and reevaluated my life on many occassions.
Whether sitting in the car and listening to a song on the radio, Ipod, or mix CD; there are certain songs that you have listened too more than others. Certain songs play a certain role in your life according to the experiences you're going through in that moment. I've put together a playlist of 20 songs (in no particular order) for 2009 that remind me of everything I've been through (the good and bad, but mostly the good) this year. I hope you enjoy this list and incorporate them into your personal playlist.

Hello and welcome to the new One Stop Art Shop blog, the official source for information, insight and updates on all that is art. My name is Joeann and I created this blog with the sole purpose of providing you with insight into the art world.
I love art. It's such a huge part of my life and heritage. It evokes passion, joy, excitement, and all kinds of other feelings within me, many of which cannot be defined, and if you're here you feel the same way.
My goal for this site is to provide information to help you along your artistic path; be it painting, drawing, or making crafts, in whatever medium you choose. My posts will try to cover a variety of topics and tutorials from sketching to Oil paintings and everything in between.
I will be posting projects every month; challenges of sorts, for you, my readers, to complete while documenting my own progress. These projects will not only be fun, but help you progress as an artist. Once a month (starting in July) I will post a challenge to be completed within 3 weeks. Emails must be submitted by the third Friday of every month. No later than 11:59 pm. I will then chose a winner to be featured on my site with a short biography.

Joeann Maillo is a Cuban/American artist whose paintings are characterized by her Caribbean culture through fluid, organic forms along with a vivid use of color. Cuban architecture and other local themes are used to reference her native heritage. She currently offers a wide range of charcoal and graphite drawings depicting various iconic celebrities, portraits, seascapes, landscapes, etc. She offers paintings in Oil and acrylic, but enjoys using different mediums as well. Joeann enjoys using a wide variety of unconventional objects such as mailboxes, wood, tile, drywall, rubber, iron etc. in place of canvas; giving her paintings a stylish, eclectic, and abstract appeal.
