Recovering Data from corrupt Pen drive

TestDisk is a free open source software which helps recovering data from a corrupt usb flash drive. Recently my flash drive got corrupted, and was asking to be formatted under windows once plugged in. I tried opening the pen drive under several operating systems including windows xp, vista, windows 7, fedora, ubuntu etc. But in most of them, “Insert a Disk into drive x” and “Drive is not formatted” error was popping up.

As the data in my removable drive was not that critical, I started experimenting with different free data recovery softwares. Out of them, TestDisk, turned out to be the best in recovering my lost FAT32 partition.

How to Recover Files using TestDisk

Common symptoms or errors seen when a drive gets corrupted is, Windows Explorer shows primary partition as raw or unformatted and Windows prompts this error message.

“The drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now?”

To recover a partition or repair a file system, you must run TestDisk with full administrator privileges. In Windows Vista, right click Testdisk.exe and select “run as administrator” option.

To recover partition from a media image or repair a filesystem image, run

testdisk image.dd to create a raw disk image
testdisk image.E01 to recover files from an Encase EWF image
testdisk 'image.*' if the Encase image is split into several files.

If the partition was reformatted into other file system use these steps given below.

run TestDisk,
select the hard disk and the partition type
choose Advanced
select the partition
choose Type,
enter the value corresponding to the previous filesystem
choose Boot
choose RebuildBS
List
If you can see your files, choose Write and confirm
In Analyse, choose to rewrite the partition with the correct partition type.

How To Repair Corrupted .001 RAR Files Free [Extract CRC failed archives]

Most of the downloads, may it be movies,softwares or games are uploaded into file sharing sites as multi part RAR files with extensions such as .r01, .r02, or .001, .002 etc.These multipart zip or rar files could be extracted with winrar or 7zip as usual but in some cases you might encounter some error while extracting those rar files(.001 files).Here I will show you how to correct or repair corupted .001 or .r01 rar files, generally called as multi part rar files.

Normally while you extract the split rar files with winrar,you will get a single file as output.But sometimes you might have got an error while extracting .001 rar files like shown in the screenshot below.

RAR files errors :"Unexpected end of file" or "CRC checks failure" or CRC failed in file.The file is corrupt.How to fix these errors caused due to uncompleted archive download or file write failure in hard disk.

This error of .001 rar/zip files might be due a single corrupted part file and could be repaired with a free tool called AutoUnpack.

The software will verify whether the repair was successful. If so, it will unpack the archive to extract the files.It will extract every multipart rar archive under the parent folder, including those inside subfolders.

Recycler virus spreads mainly though removable medias like USB flash drives / pen drives,external HD’s or even iPods and mobile phone memory cards.These viruses exploit the autorun feature of windows and can be found in different names inside flash drives like recycler.exe, flashguard.exe, newfolder.exe and also create replicas using the same folder name which they occupy.So how can we completely remove recycler virus and safeguard our PC.

How Recycler Virus Work and spreads from computer to computer.

The main reason a computer gets infected with recycler virus is by exploiting the autorun feature available in windows (mainly windows xp).It copies the autorun.inf files on each drive of the computer, be it permanent or a removable media such as DVDs, CD ROMs, USB Devices, or Memory Sticks.The purpose of the autorun.inf file is to activate the actual executable virus present in the drive.In this case it’s recycler.exe.Here is the code from the autorun.inf file which executes recycler virus when the drive is opened.

Once you open the infected USB drive, the recycler virus executes and copies itself inside every open folder with different name.It uses a batch file to modify the system registry and executes itself each time the system starts up.You cannot remove the virus even after formatting your removable drive. The anti-virus software may detect it but cannot remove it.

Some versions of this virus,is known to connect to external websites and download malicious code to your hard drive and steal information's like credit card data,password,history logs etc.Also,it disables task manager,antivirus software's,folder options,control panel and all utilities which deals with PC security.

How to Re Enable folder options,regedit,msconfig and task manager disabled by autorun virus

To re-enable these options,you could use Remove Restrictions Tool.Run RRT as an administrator(in Windows Vista) to perform actions and restore all the options.

After running the RRT,click check all and then remove.Now you will be able to see all the hidden autorun and recycler files by checking “Show hidden files” in the folder options.

How to remove Recycler/ Autorun Virus from Flash Drive

[optional] You can use Flash Disinfector to remove the virus from USB/flash drives.Download this tool and save it to your hard disk [and not portable drive].Run this software and insert your infected flash drive when prompted.

After clicking OK,the desktop will go blank for few seconds[it’s normal] and removes the autorun virus.

Or you can use Auto Run Eater for the perfect removal of autorun.inf files from your hard drives as well.

How To Stop Recycler Virus Completely

For complete removal of USB drives virus like newfolder.exe ,recycler.exe etc and to prevent further spreading of virus you must first install protector plus software and then scan to delete every instance of the virus [you can also try Smart virus remover].After that install a fresh version of Kaspersky antivirus 2010 or Nod32,which completely removes the recycler and autorun related viruses.

The above iSO file is not bootable from a USB Stick, to make it bootable from a USB Stick please follow the instructions below

Important Information:

* When installing Eee7, The final phase of installation (Finalizing Installation) could take some time depending on the netbook to have.

* If you do not have drivers for Vista to install the devices , then simply download the drivers for XP, go to the executable file (. Exe) that you downloaded, right click -> Properties -- > Compatibility and check the option "Run this program in compatibility mode" for:
Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

To be able to install the netbook due to lack of dvd drive,we should prepare a USB Flash to make it bootable.

What we need:

* USB Flash Drive (2GB + more)
* The DVD which we burned the image of the iso that you downloaded
* A computer with Vista / Windows 7

Step 1: Formating the USB Flash

The following steps we will use the command prompt to create the appropriate Usb flash fomat with diskpart. [Note: It will erase all the data on USB Flash, be careful.]

1. Connect the USB Flash Drive

2. Open the command prompt as administrator (Go Start> All Programs> Accesories, right click on the "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator"

3. To find out what number corresponds to the USB Flash Drive you should type the following in the window of the "Command Prompt":

diskpart
list disk

The number corresponding to your USB will be appear in the list (see the USB and the capacity of)
This number will need in the next step. Suppose that the USB Flash Drive is the disk 1.

4. Format the USB typing the following commands in the same window. Attention, replace the number "1" on disk 1 to the number of your drive as emerged from the above list.

select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs = NTFS
assign
exit

When you enter this, you will have a USB Flash Drive formatted ready to be bootable.

Step 2: Let's make the USB bootable
we will use the application bootsect that is in the EEE7 DVD.
We will use the same command prompt window from Step 1:

1. Put the dvd of Eee7 in the drive of your computer.
2. Change the drive in the command prompt with that which is your drive. Suppose that the DVD drive is D:

d:
cd d: \ boot

3. We will use the bootsect to define the USB as a bootable NTFS drive ready to accept the Eee7.
Suppose that the USB Flash Drive is G: \, your position in G: \ put the letter of your USB.
Enter:

bootsect / nt60 g:

4. You can close the command prompt,now the USB is bootable.

Step 3: Copy files from DVD to USB Flash drive

The easiest way is through the windows. Copy all files from DVD and paste it in the USB flash drive. Just copy all the files, you're ready.

Step 4: Set the BIOS to boot from USB

Enables users to create or edit a shading object, which has a smooth transition between colors across an area. Foxit PDF Editor offers linear and radial gradients for users to choose.

* Converting Text of Path
Able to convert the selected text object(s) into path(s), which will meet the pre-press requirement. For those computers which do not support or display certain embedded fonts, this new feature helps to overcome that issue. Foxit PDF Editor also offers a menu option for users to convert the entire text in a PDF to path.

* Adding Shapes in Non-Graphics Editing Mode
Provides several simple auto shapes that users can insert into a PDF in the non-graphics editing mode. With this new version, users can easily add a simple shape in the main interface of Foxit PDF Editor without having to enter into the graphics editor.

* Removing all evaluation marks at once
Removes all the evaluation marks on a PDF file that was added by Foxit PDF Editor 2.1 all at once by selecting "Remove Evaluation Marks" under the Help menu for registered users.

* Alignment Support
Automatically places or aligns the selected objects evenly with the Objects Align button on the toolbar. This feature helps to make your structured PDF pages more professional.

* Image Transparency Support
This allows users the ability to set image transparency with alpha channel. By inputting values of between 0% and 100% in Image Alpha text field, the image goes from fully transparent to fully opaque.

* Checking for Update
This option under the Help menu detects the new version of Foxit PDF Editor and keeps you updated with the latest release.

* Improved Text Objects Creating
Adds an Object attributes option in Add new text objects dialog box, making it easier for users to set preferences for text objects, such as font size, text mode, word space, color, etc.

* Property List Setting
This setting determines to either show or hide the Property List when launching Foxit PDF Editor by doing settings in the Options dialog box.

* New Shortcut Keys
Adds several new shortcut keys to make Foxit PDF Editor easier to use, i.e. ESC is shortcut for saving and exiting the in-place editing mode, Alt+Delete fills a selection with the foreground color, Ctrl+Delete fills a selection with the background color, and Ctrl+D deselects a selction.

* New Icon
The new attractive Foxit PDF Editor icon, having a pen inside a purple box, indicates more powerful editing features have been included in the new version.
