A Summers Day

I’ve been wanting to get out into the countryside on a beautiful sunny for a while to do some backlit portrait. I was joined by the stunning Sarah Reed who despite being bitten by insects, stung by nettles and standing a freezing cold river kept smiling and working hard all afternoon.

Trying a Lighting Idea

I wanted to try a an idea I had for studio lighting to look like bright daylight in open shade. I please with the result and with a bit of refinement I think this will be a nice set-up to use. I also I had the pleasure of meeting model Sarah for the first time and immediately booked to work with her again.

I wanted to try and emulate a photograph by Sue Bryce as a technical exercise, just to see whether I could do it. The original utilised strong sunlight coming through a window and reflected back toward the model with large panel reflectors. Since it was July and in the UK I didn’t have any sunlight, outside it was overcast with dark, grey clouds so I improvised with off-camera flash. One flash was to the rear of Grace and camera left, this was feathered to catch her hair but also send most of its light into a large white reflector panel. Another flash was to the front and camera right, shooting through a large white translucent panel. I think I achieved what I set out to but it took quite a bit of thinking about. Afterwards we spent a few minutes doing some natral light shots and to be honest, I much prefer these.

Media City

I joined a group of photographers from the Talk Photography forum at the new Media City in Salford Quays. It’s a very impressive area and so different from when I last visited many years ago when only the Lowry had been completed. Unfortunately the sun set behind the building works that will be the ITV building but I tried to make the most of it.

I joined a group of photographers at Brian Sandham’s studio in Preston for a ballet shoot with a Black Swan theme. The excellent make-up by Jenna Hacking really brought it to life.

Hooray For Hollywood
