Question #1: What makes a great designer and a great designing experience?

The psychology of the design process is actually very interesting. Many people struggle with moving forward on their design project because, although they want all the options and selections in front of them, there are so many they get overloaded and shut down. What makes our designers great is that we are the filter to prevent them from being overwhelmed. We ask the right questions to help eliminate the choices they don’t need to see, which allows them to make great selections and move forward.

Questions #2: What’s the saying, paralysis by analysis? Is that the scenario you are describing?

Pretty much. Although we may have 50 samples of a given component with us, in order to keep the process simple, we ask a series of questions for each part of the bathroom ahead of time. This helps filter the client’s decisions so we only bring out the samples we believe are going to please them. I can’t tell you how many times our designers or myself will show the client a product and they’ll say, “let me see more”, and they end up choosing the first one we showed them. A great designer asks questions, filters the answers, determines the needs and likes, and then brings things to the table that we know the customer is really looking for.

Question #3: Do you find that because of your format, which brings clients through the material selection process, the decisions fall into place naturally, and you’re able to give them the outcome they wanted?

While we don’t necessarily want them to make a whole bunch of changes after we’ve already made our decision, we always give them the option so that they don’t feel stuck with something they wish they had switched. Making changes all the time will, of course, affect the efficiency and time to create the bathroom, but it’s not the end of the world. If a client wakes up in a cold sweat and realizes they want to revisit their faucet choice, we want to enable them to do so.

Question #4: Do you ever get to a place where people are just selecting stuff that is kind of zany and doesn’t fit together well, so you want to tell them to not go that route because it may look weird?

I think it’s pragmatic. In the end, it’s their bathroom and it is completely up to them. If someone wants to do a Dodgers-themed bathroom, we can do that. I just like to give the pros and cons of what it means when they are making those decisions. When someone is picking things I think will clash or not pair together nicely, I give the reasons as to why I don’t think it’s a good idea: Resale being a big reason. A majority of the public is going to walk in and say “I don’t like that”, which will likely affect resale. A second reason is functionality. It may be a cool idea, but if it will cause functional issues, it just won’t work. Last reason would be if the colors or patterns clash. I have found that if you educate the client on the reasons why a choice might not be the best idea, they usually understand and make a great selection.

Question #1: Do you want a comfort-height toilet?

For most the answer is yes, especially if you don’t currently have a comfort-height toilet in your home. While most regular toilet seats are less than 16” high, with the majority in the 14-15” range, comfort-height toilets are between 17-19” tall. Besides often being compliant with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards, comfort-height toilets are ideal for someone with a disability, knee issues, is tall, or anyone who just wants to shorten the distance when standing back up again. The flip side would be in consideration of small children where a higher toilet may not be the best choice. That’s why variety in the home is always good, and again if you don’t already have at least one comfort-height toilet in the house it’s a great investment!

Question #2: Elongated- or round-bowl toilet?

This really comes down to the room you have to work with. Of course everyone has their preference, but if you ask me, elongated bowls are the way to go. They look sleeker, are more comfortable, and more and more are becoming the norm. The only real downside, other than if you just don’t like how they look, is that they tend to utilize more space in the bathroom. However, there are some compact elongated units that take up the same space as a standard round front unit. Also wall-hung toilets are a great option if you’re dealing with a smaller space. So all things considered I recommend going with an elongated bowl.

Question #3: What style toilet are you interested in?

In other words, how do you want your toilet to fit into the overall style of your bathroom?

I have done some very interesting bathrooms over the years. Toilets can differ in terms of their trim, molding, color, whether they are more square or smooth, and a multitude of other factors. For many, a toilet is just there to serve its primary function and the owner will tend to stay with something basic. That said, if your bathroom needs to fit a distinctive style or motif, a stylized toilet might be the way to go. There are lots of options and we would love to help you find something that is a perfect fit!

Bathrooms have been featuring floating vanities more and more, as home owners increasingly appreciate the sleep minimalism they exhibit as hallmarks of the modern home. Floating vanities give the impression of a more open space in the bathroom while getting rid of the cluttered look of full length vanities. If you’re considering how to update the look of your bathroom, consider the unique accents floating vanities can add to your bathroom. The following are some examples of floating vanities One Week Bath has installed for customers across Southern California.

1. This floating vanity extends out from wall to wall adding a minimalist look to the entire space. Fitted with flat panel doors without any cabinet pulls, the dark wood grain beautifully contrasts with the rest of the room. The horizontal lines in the bathroom give a calm look to the room.

2. While floating vanities typically go well a modern bathroom, this specific bathroom features dual floating vanities as part of a transitional design. The more traditional color scheme is combined with modern elements such as the large horizontal shower tile and glass vessel sinks. The sleek brushed nickel cabinet pulls and flat panel cabinets add a modern touch to this room.

3. This small bathroom makes use of a sleek floating vanity to expand the visual space in this bathroom while maintaining a simple look and modern design. The mostly black and white color scheme is a distinctive look of modern bathrooms, and the high contrast in the black panels helps to bring out the vanity as the primary focal point. The black color of the vanity ties in with the mirror and the shower liner, making the space feel cohesive.

4. This last example is a bold floating vanity tucked into a tight space in a modern bathroom. This vanity reaches from wall to wall, incorporating it into the structure of the room, adding to the simplicity of the space. The simple chrome cabinet pulls and flat panel cabinets are classic elements of modern design, and the tall vessel sink and chrome faucet help establish a strong look in this bathroom.

We always use our clients’ input when deciding how to redesign a space, and our in depth design meeting helps us work with each and every client so we can find out if a floating vanity is right for your preferences and needs.

YoYo lives in the Crenshaw, California home that her grandmother first bought over 80 years ago. Over the years, both her mother and grandmother made some major renovations to the home, but nearly all of them without professional help. “My mom had just ‘Mickey Mouse’d’ it, but had never done it the right way,” she said. For example, she described the walls as, “covered by decades of paint, wallpaper, and contact paper.”

Rather than buying another home in the expensive Los Angeles area, YoYo was considering a remodel to revitalize the bathroom in her Spanish-style home. Her friend Melvina caught wind of this and jumped at the opportunity to recommended One Week Bath. “Melvina said to me, ‘You’ve got to use them.’”

With her busy schedule, she knew that a typical remodel would require a substantial amount of her time, which she didn’t have to spare. Since One Week Bath has a streamlined process, it seemed that a remodel with them would work with her busy lifestyle. “They specialize in bathrooms. This is what they do.”

YoYo has a rich artistic background. As a jeweler, she’s very in tune with her own style. One Week Bath’s owner & founder Matt Plaskoff worked as the designer on this project, and he met with her for an in-home design meeting to help design her dream bathroom. “Matt asked me ‘Of all the bathrooms on the website, which ones had the feeling you liked?’” Together they designed a contemporary bathroom with dark colors and natural materials. “The colors all go together,” YoYo explained. “The beautiful dark colors of the grout tie in with the vanity and the mirror. I’m very into custom surfaces too, surfaces that look natural. The dark colors in the room have a very organic feel, and they’re all framed with the white crown molding.”

At the design meeting, she began to truly understand the value and ease of a One Week Bath remodel. “Matt brings everything to you. You don’t have to leave your house looking for the right piece of furniture.” After Matt left, she called the team requesting a few tweaks to the design. The team was very accommodating; they made sure her new bathroom would be exactly what she wanted.

During the design meeting, Matt assured her that the rest of the remodeling process would be just as enjoyable. “Matt told me, ‘If you like me, wait until you meet the crew.’” When they arrived at her home on her construction start day, she was very pleased. “Customer Service? No. This was Customer Care. They made me feel so at ease.”

The crew treated her home just as nicely as they treated her. “I was just so grateful for what the guys did. They treated my home like a 25-million dollar home, even though it’s not. That really meant a lot to me.” She even recommended a name change for the business. “They should change their name to ‘One Week Bath and Beyond and Beyond.’”

Halfway through the remodel, YoYo was so impressed with the crew that she spoke to a friend of hers, ex-NBA star Magic Johnson. She told him that she wanted to thank the crew in a special way. Magic gave her six signed basketballs all personalized for each member of the crew. The next morning when the crew arrived, she had written a colorful, creative personalized note on the protection paper throughout the home, thanking the crew for their work and presenting them with the gifts.

She now describes her bathroom as her “own little museum in the corner of the house. It’s a beautiful piece of architecture framed by white crown molding, in place and perfect.” It might even be the last bathroom she’ll ever need. “Matt gave me everything I wanted, so much so that I’ll never have to call Matt again. The guys made it happen.”

By Billy Taylor

Does your bathroom need a facelift? This contractor aims to eliminate the risk and stress of bathroom remodeling with a business model focused on improving the customer experience. Meet Matt Plaskoff from One Week Bath.

Industry insiders might recognize Plaskoff as the owner of Plaskoff Construction, a 28-year-old remodeling company based in Van Nuys, but you probably know him from his role as the lead construction consultant for ABC’s remodeling TV show, “Extreme Makeover Home Edition.”

“In one way or another,” he says, “I’ve been involved in nearly 3,000 bathroom remodels.”

According to Plaskoff, the bathroom is an area of construction where size doesn’t translate to ease, cost or speed. In fact, he explains, its complexity is measured in details and systems, not square feet: “It’s one of the smallest spaces in the home, yet it demands the greatest amount of detail and attention.”

A New Approach

In 2000 — drawing from years of experience working with everything from million-dollar mansions to humble abodes — Plaskoff decided to create a new business approach to remodeling.

He had an idea: “If I could just eliminate the excuses and obstacles in the process, my job would be fun.”

Since then, Plaskoff says he has designed and remodeled thousands of custom bathrooms through the One Week Bath process, which “gives everyone involved in the project a sense of accomplishment.”

How It Works

One Week Bath makes the custom bathroom remodeling process more pleasant through an “all-inclusive” custom design and construction experience. And every single item for the project is included in the contract, says Plaskoff: “There are no surprises.”

The process begins with a short project questionnaire, followed by a 30-minute phone consultation to determine scope, style and a budget. After this is squared, a designer brings a mobile showroom to your home, which leads to a completed design, product list and a guaranteed price.

On the scheduled start date, construction begins and your bathroom will be ready in just one week.

“It’s that easy,” says Plaskoff.

A pedestal sink is a classic piece of bathroom furniture that can act as a centerpiece for bathrooms of various sizes and styles. Since pedestal sinks take up very little room, they can help to open up the visual space in a small traditional style bathroom, whereas in a large modern bathroom, a pedestal sink can make a bold statement and add a visual allure to the space. See four examples below of pedestal sinks we’ve installed in bathrooms around Southern California.

1. This transitional style design (from bathroom # 89) incorporates a few modern and traditional elements that contribute to a very chic look with creative contrasting elements. The pedestal sink in this bathroom is oval shaped, and it is paired with a rectangular faucet with sharp edges. The bright green wall tile in the shower adds a pop of color in this room, but the white porcelain sink and toilet match the shower floor tile, making these elements complementary. The dark wood grain tile on the floor contrasts these bright colors in the space, helping to make the white pedestal sink one of the main focal points in the bathroom.

2. One common sacrifice with a pedestal sink is counter space, but that doesn’t always have to be the case. This pedestal sink (from bathroom #88) includes plenty of counter space thanks to the rectangular countertops on both sides of the sink. This modern bathroom takes advantage of cool blue and purple hues in the lighting and shower tile, and the eclectic look of this sink adds to the modern atmosphere of the room.

3. In this traditional bathroom (bathroom #84), the rectangular pedestal sink fits in with the classic style of the room. The decorative edges on the cabinet, the molding, and the door frame all complement the detailed edges on the sink. This shot also illustrates how a pedestal sink can create space in an otherwise small bathroom, with the small trashcan and shelving unit fitting beneath the sink.

4. This final example (from bathroom #31) shows why pedestal sinks are a favorite in small bathrooms. This particular bathroom (bathroom #31) was designed for two young daughters who wanted a bathroom they could call their own, and the vintage design and pink color scheme of this room fit their personalities. The small pedestal sink pairs with the vintage toilet in this space, and the pedestal design provides room for towels to be stored beneath the sink. The sink complements the vintage look of this room, making this Jack-and-Jill bathroom a fantastic complement to their bedrooms.
We always use our clients’ input when deciding how to redesign a bathroom, and our in-depth design meeting helps us work with each and every client so we can find out if a pedestal sink is right for your preferences and needs.

For this week’s Transformation Tuesday, we’re looking at a traditional style bathroom we remodeled in the Los Angeles area. The homeowner wanted to switch from a beachy style bathroom to a more traditional style room that incorporated natural stone and classic-looking furniture and fixtures. During the in-home design meeting, our designer noticed the gorgeous natural light in this space, and she incorporated lighter colors and glossy materials to complement this illuminating aspect of the room.

This photo showcases the natural stone both in the countertops and in the tiling. The dark granite countertop and the white marble tile add beautiful textures to this space. The glossy finish on these surfaces helps to accentuate the lighting and the marbled tile contributes to the traditional look of this space.

The original bathroom had a wall-to-wall vanity with a white ceramic tile countertop and yellow-tinted cabinet doors. The tiled countertop made the vanity area look far too busy, and the yellow cabinet doors also added a more cluttered look to the space. The homeowner opted for a simpler look in the remodel, taking advantage of single-piece dark granite countertops and clean white cabinet doors. The freestanding vanities and hanging wall mirrors opened up the look of this bathroom while also adding to the traditional style.

The shower in this bathroom received a major makeover. The new look takes advantage of the traditional style by incorporating classic looking marble tile with traditional chrome plumbing fixtures. The white marble tile stretches from floor to ceiling, adding an illustrious and grand look to the shower. The chrome fixtures match the new chrome curtain bar, and the black and white mosaic liner adds a visual anchor point in the shower space.

This final shot of the bathroom shows a few of the elements that remained consistent throughout remodeling. The light blue wall paint contributed a soothing look to this room, and the homeowner wanted to keep that color for the walls. The homeowner also decided to keep a piece of wall art to add a punch of color in this corner of the room. We installed a new water-efficient toilet that matched the traditional style, and you can see the how the white marble tile helps to make the space look cleaner and more updated.

As you can see, our designers use a tremendous amount of thought, knowledge, and expertise when designing a bathroom that matches our clients’ needs. We consider over a hundred decisions that all add up to create a bathroom that is as functional as it is beautiful. If you’re located in Southern California, and you are interested in seeing how we could transform your bathroom in just one week, contact us so we can make your dream bathroom a reality.

A large two-sink vanity with an expansive countertop and vast storage doesn’t work for every remodel. For certain homes, we approach guest bathrooms and small washrooms with a minimalistic approach, finding a small vanity to make a big impact, focusing on functionality and style over size and stature. The right small vanity can give off a cozy look that adds interest and allure while serving the purpose for the room.

This first example is a wall-to-wall vanity that’s only three feet wide. It’s one of the smallest vanities we’ve ever installed, but the shaker doors and mid-tone gray wood stain makes it a stylish addition to this washroom. The contemporary vanity is paired with a white granite countertop, and the textured white backsplash tiles add a homey look in this small space. The frameless mirror and the small decorations on the wall all contribute to the character of the space, making this washroom just as comfortable as the rest of the home.

This particular Asian-inspired bathroom incorporates a number of stylish details in a very small space, with the vanity being one of many. This vanity has 9 shaker cabinet doors, which adds to the detailed look of this space. The dark wood cabinets match the dark wood accents throughout the rest of the room, and the natural stone vessel sink complements the organic textures on the wainscoting and the bathmat. These colorful details all bring a natural look to this eclectic bath.

This vintage bathroom takes advantage of a very classic white color scheme, using subtle gray accents to bring the space together. The small vanity in this room has a classic undermount sink paired with a traditional three piece faucet. The shaker cabinet doors and brushed nickel pull knobs match the vintage style of this bathroom, helping the vanity act as a focal point for this small bathroom.

Our final small vanity example is a sleek floating vanity that takes advantage of a minimalistic, modern look. The flat-panel cabinet doors are paired with sleek chrome bar pulls. The black color of the cabinet contrasts the white and chrome colors throughout the space, and the white vessel sink adds an interesting look to this corner of the room. This modern design pairs well with the hard edges in the mirror, and the chrome towel rack complements the look in this room.

We always use our clients’ input when deciding how to redesign a space, and our in depth design meeting helps us work with each and every client so we can find out if a small vanity is right for your preferences and needs.

For this week’s Transformation Tuesday we’re taking a look at this traditional bathroom we installed in a Los Angeles home. This homeowner was in a similar situation to many of our clients; after living with a tragically outdated bathroom for many years, she finally had the means and time to invest in a remodel. Our team was delighted to make her dream bathroom a reality.

The existing layout of the room included a few particular details that gave it some charm and warmth. The homeowner wanted to keep the layout but install new fixtures and materials to complement the traditional style throughout the rest of her home. The homeowner chose a neutral color scheme with mostly beige and brown hues throughout the space.

In this photo you can see that we kept the layout in tact, keeping the bathtub in the corner of room to add a pleasant charm and finish to the space. The new wainscotting behind the tub with beige porcelain tiles better integrated the bathtub with the rest of the room, and the glass tile liner elegantly linked the shower with the tub area.

The remodeled shower was fitted with brushed nickel fixtures and enclosed with clear frameless glass. The plumbing fixtures are also traditional in style to match the rest of the bathroom. Our designer recommended frameless glass for the shower to make the space feel more expansive. A small inset shelf built into the wall of the shower gave the homeowner additional storage for soaps and shampoos.

In this final photo you can see how a simple approach to the vanity can improve the look of a space. The dark-stained freestanding vanity with shaker cabinet doors offered a complementary touch to this traditional style. Polished granite countertops updated the space, and the single mirror with dual sconces reduced the visual clutter in this bathroom.

Last week we shared a story with you about a special client named YoYo who wrote a clever note for our team. We were thrilled that she took the time to tell us how excited she was about her new bathroom and her experience with One Week Bath. Well…this week she went one step further, and she sent us a brilliant little video she put together that showcases her bathroom’s transformation.

Throughout the remodel, YoYo regularly took video and photos of our team. Then this past weekend, she sent us this final video. We are very impressed that YoYo took the time to put this together, all to say thank you to our guys.

Thank you, YoYo! We enjoyed the remodel just as much as you, and we’re happy to see you loving your new bathroom.
