Bloggers reacted with uncommon drama, spirit and gravitas to the financial crisis facing Greece -and by extension, the eurozone- which came to a head last week, as in it’s first major test, the socialist government elected last October fought bitter battles both at home and abroad to weather an alleged assault on the currency and country by speculators (since admitted by the eurozone chairman) and avoid defaulting on the country’s debt. After the announcement of tough austerity measures by the government in late January, followed by a renewed wave of strikes and a vague statement of support by EU leaders, involving “technical support” by the IMF, EU finance ministers met this week to thrust a narrow deadline on Greece before imposing further strict measures.

Citizen photojournalist Craig Wherlock, who has been closely following the wave of demonstrations erupting in recent years in Greece, somberly summarized the internal challenges faced by the Papandreou government after the faint, non-fiscal support secured in Brussels:

Doubts remain though over Athens ability to implement such radical changes given the massive public resentment they have created with the country’s civil service trade unions. Already proposed changes to police and armed services pension contribution schemes have been postponed in the face of opposition.

Also the ability of Greece notoriously corrupt tax authorities to get tough on tax evasion has been questioned by Greeks long accustomed to such calls by political parties on both the left and right. As one Thessaloniki taxi driver drily put it, getting Greece out its present fix by raising taxes is like bailing out the Titanic with a sieve.

As well as strikes and public demonstrations there is also the fear that growing social unrest will spark off a repeat of the month long revolt which swept the country in December 2009 following the death of a teenager, allegedly shot by the police in central Athens.

Political blogger Panos Zervas placed the blame squarely on politicians and their cronies and shared Wherlock’s concerns about the possible social repercussions of the crisis:

Ειλικρινά ΔΕΝ νομίζω ότι αυτή ήταν η μοναδική μας εναλλακτική. Την έκανε μοναδική εναλλακτική η απίστευτη ανεπάρκεια του ηγετικού πολιτικού μας προσωπικού. Δυο κόμματα εξουσίας με επικεφαλής δυο κραυγαλέα ανεπαρκείς πριγκιπικούς κληρονόμους, οι οποίοι κουβαλάνε μαζί τους ένα απίστευτο σκυλολόι «ιδεολόγων» της αρπαχτής. Ένας ολόκληρος στρατός από γλύφτες, μετριότητες και απατεώνες του κοινού ποινικού δικαίου. Με τους ικανούς και ανιδιοτελείς ανθρώπους να έχουν εξοριστεί, δεκαετίες τώρα, από την πολιτική – γιατί πολύ απλά δεν υπάρχει χώρος γι’ αυτούς.

Τα θλιβερά κοράκια της εξουσίας δεν ήταν και δεν είναι σε θέση να σχεδιάσουν και να υλοποιήσουν πολιτικές εξόδου από την κρίση, χωρίς να γίνει ο τόπος μας Γης Μαδιάμ. Έντρομοι, ανίκανοι – και στο τέλος αδιάντροποι, θα κάνουν ό,τι τους υπαγορεύουν οι «απέξω».

Μόνο που αυτό που μας υπαγορεύουν / υποχρεώνουν οι «απέξω» θα οδηγήσει την Ελλάδα ολοταχώς στη δεκαετία του ’50. Και όταν οι εργαζόμενοι και η νεολαία αρχίσουν να το συνειδητοποιούν αυτό, μέσα από το αδιέξοδο και τη μαυρίλα που θα οδηγηθούν, τότε τα Δεκεμβριανά του 2008 θα μοιάζουν πια με χαρούμενες εκδρομές των προσκόπων, σε σύγκριση με αυτά που, αναπόφευκτα, θα συμβούν στις συνειδήσεις των ανθρώπων και στους δρόμους των πόλεων.

I really don’t think this was our only alternative. What made it the only alternative was the incredible inadequacy of our civilian leadership. Two parties swapping power, headed by two blatantly inadequate princely heirs, burdened by an incredible gang of graft “ideologues”. An entire army of bootlickers, mediocrities and common crooks. With the capable and selfless having been exiled from politics decades ago, because there simply isn’t any room for them.
The wretched vultures of power weren’t and aren’t capable of plotting and executing policies to steer the country out of the crisis without turning it into shambles. Fearful, incompetent, and finally shameless, they will do what the “outsiders” dictate.
Only, what the outsiders dictate will thrust Greece full speed astern back to the 50’s. And when the workers and the youth begin to realize that, through the dead end and the bleakness they’ll be driven to, they’ll make the December 2008 riots look like a merry boy scout picnic, compared to what will happen in the minds of people and the streets of cities.

Envisioning a way out of the bleakness, veteran journalist – blogger Andreas Panagopoulos, raised a fighting cry for solidarity and collective action across Europe:

Αρκετά με την άμυνα… Αλλάζουμε και τους βουλιάζουμε! Κι αλλάζουμε μαζί με τους άλλους λαούς της Ευρώπης. Μέσα από Νέα, κοινά συνδικάτα και οργανώσεις. Με πρωτοβουλίες (και) μέσα από τα blogs, το twitter, το Facebook. Με κοινή, πανευρωπαϊκή αντίσταση απέναντι στους τραπεζίτες και τα φαντ. Ο μοναχικός δρόμος μας πάει στο γκρεμό. Αλλο δρόμο δεν έχουμε από τους κοινούς αγώνες!

Architect and blogger C. Alexacos, in his blog titled “Citizen”, envisioned a different challenge and solution, calling on citizens to rise above the pettiness and make an effort to help the government steer the country through the crisis,

Μήπως αντί για τα συντεχνιακά και εγωιστικά μας θέλω, πρέπει να δούμε το “εμείς”; Μήπως ήρθε η ώρα για ένα νέο εθελοντισμό; Στα πρότυπα των Ολυμπιακών; Μήπως έτσι δείξουμε έμπρακτα στους εαυτούς μας και στους γύρω μας ποιοι είμαστε και τι θέλουμε.
Δεν προτείνω σε καμία περίπτωση την ακύρωση της όποιας αντιπολίτευσης ή κριτικής. Κάθε άλλο. Ο Παπανδρέου, καλώς ή κακώς, ηγείται μίας Εθνικής προσπάθειας. Should we, perhaps, put aside the interests of our guilds and our selfish wants, and focus on the “we”? As we did for the Olympics? Can we, perhaps, show ourselves and others around us who we are and what we want that way? In no way do I propose to nullify any opposition or criticism; on the contrary. Papandreou, for better or worse, is heading a National effort. We can deal with it in football terms, or we can help. For 2, 3, 6 months. Those who say we’re at war are right. It remains to be seen whether we’re egopathic black marketeers or citizens with perspectives.

while blogger Chris supported the need to impose strict measures -even predicting the additional measures imposed by ECOFIN- but railed against impunity, demanding justice before innocents are called to shoulder the burden, in a theme also promoted by the Greek vice president:

Σκληρά αλλά απαραίτητα τα μέτρα που εξαγγέλθηκαν απόψε από τον πρωθυπουργό. Δυστυχώς, ίσως να χρειαστούν και άλλα στο σημείο που φθάσανε τη χώρα ανίκανοι και κλέφτες, πολιτικοί κοι λαμόγια. Όσο όμως αυτοί οι ανίκανοι και κλέφτες δε πάνε φυλακή και δεν κατάσχονται τα κλεμένα τότε οποιοδήποτε μέτρο που απαιτεί έστω και ένα ευρό από αυτούς που δεν έφαγαν και δεν ψήφισαν ανίκανους θα είναι άδικο.

The measures announced tonight by the prime minister are tough and cruel. Unfortunately, additional measures may be needed, at the point where incompetents and thieves, politicians and crooks have brought the country. As long as those incompetents and thieves aren’t going to prison and their loot confiscated, any measure that demands even a Euro from those who didn’t swindle or vote for incompetents will be unfair.

One of the oldest Greek bloggers, graphic designer Arkoudos produces a semi-regular pseudo-magazine cover that serves as visual commentary on current events. The latest “Point of View” featured a half-shorn sheep with the blurb: “Hey, voters; we said you weren’t going to pay for it and you believed us?”

Blog posts about the crisis have been few and far between overall, as Greek bloggers are reeling with the possible dire implications of staggered developments and heavy media spin, but Twitter has been abuzz for the better part of the new year with frantic discourse, analysis, speculation, anger, frustration and wild humor over the “Greek crisis”. Some choice tweets:

After a widely republished story by the New York Times reported that Karamanlis’ conservative government had clandestinely pawned off future infrastructure proceeds in order to service the debt, aided by a Wall Street firm notorious for it’s involvement in the subprime meltdown, user @Cyberela arrived at an uncomfortable realization:

Am I paying road tolls to Goldman-Sachs!?!

Arkoudos mused bitterly on a deal struck with France to buy frigates amidst the crisis, reportedly in return for diplomatic support:

Recently married, Tom berated the government, not as much for lack of trying, but for failing to inspire hope in people that the crisis can be overcome. In a post titled “Oh, what a happy life“, after a Theodorakis song favored by George Papandreou’s father and historical statesman Andreas, he recounted a chance meeting in the street:

Waiting for the light to turn green, I noticed a pensioner singing the following song out loud. I don’t know why, but all day long I saw everything optimistically. That’s what I need. A small hope. Not to have the truth hidden from me, but to have something to hope for. Until they manage to make me feel like that, even temporarily, as Theodorakis’ song that the pensioner sang did, I won’t be giving a damn’ about them.

Riots broke out in Athens and Thessaloniki on December 5-6, during memorial gatherings for a 15-year old named Alexandros Grigoropoulos who was shot dead by police on December 6 last year. Immediately after his death in 2008, Athens was consumed by riots and public protests that lasted for several days. This year, mostly peaceful protest rallies devolved into incidents of police brutality and misconduct – as shown by citizen media – forcing the Greek government to respond with new promises of police reform for the second time in only two months.

Prior to the rallies, blogger and podcaster mikroanalogo haphazardly and movingly catalogued the memories from protests of 2008:

The memories arrive one by one, in burst mode, when I least expect them. An image, a press of the camera shutter, a slogan, a blow, a voice… the smell of teargas and burned plastic in the air, the burning on eyes and skin, the anxiety and rage, the adrenalin, the fear, the shame but also the pride, the weariness, the wake and the testimonies on the radio, the calls of the detainees, the beatings, the blood, the blackened statues and the destroyed properties, the reactions of the “wise” and the support of the parents [..] the dry sound of a club on bones [..] the righteousness that chokes you more than the teargas [..] the young faces behind the gasmasks and uniforms [..] the weariness and the anxiety to verify and collect information, the citizen journalism

Blogger and web designer Cyberela observed that justice has still not been done, commenting on the Supreme Court’s decision to postpone the trial another year, and away from Athens, for reasons of public safety:

Let it be noted that the most dreaded terrorist organization in the annals of Greek history was tried in Athens. Is Alexis then more dangerous than “November 17″? The kid is dead, gentlemen.

One year later, more trouble in the streets

Fears and expectations were raised early on about widespread rioting by mainstream media. Journalist and blogger Andreas Panagopoulos decreed:

το πέρσι δεν είναι ίδιο με το φέτος. [..] οι εξεγέρσεις δεν γίνονται με προγραμματισμένα ραντεβού. Σαν να πηγαίνεις στον οδοντίατρο.

This year isn’t the same as last year [...] uprisings can’t be scheduled like dentist appointments

As protest rallies to commemorate Grigoropoulos and denounce police violence went on, mostly young citizen photojournalists ventured out to cover them, some using Twitter and Twitpic to provide minute-by-minute reports. A great number uploaded photo sets to the Demotix photo agency, which eventually created a dedicated newshub for it’s reporters covering the unrest.

For 3 days, photography student Stathis posted hastily written, terse realtime reports and photos on Twitter from the rallies and riots in Athens:

Online testimonies of police brutality

Veteran citizen photojournalist and English teacher Craig Wherlock was injured in the leg during a kettling action by police squads in Thessaloniki. His was one of the first of many testimonies of police brutality:

In the general mayhem the marchers, who are nearly always organised in blocks according to political affiliation, soon scattered and mixed and that is how I ended up with about two hundred others just below the ex-ministry of Macedonia and Thrace surrounded by riot squads who fired tear gas rounds into the group and beat anyone who tried to move away from the area.

Even after it was clear that they had control of the area, officers continued to club and kick those on the ground and refused medical help to the injured.

Besides reporting on local rallies, Craig also confronted the minister of Citizen Protection on Twitter (@teacherdude):

@chrisochoidis When was it police policy to fire canisters of tear gas into a packed mass of people from 10m away? 4 injured like that.

Ιn one of the most damning incidents of police misconduct brought to light by citizen media, the chief of police in Chania, Crete admitted that “hoodies” filmed on amateur video standing side by side with police were, in fact, disguised police officers:

Ministerial promises on Twitter

The minister of Citizen Protection, overwhelmed by citizen complaints and demands, responded on Twitter, with promises of reform:

Θα καταργήσουμε τα χημικά. Όλοι θα φέρουν διακριτικά. Θα τα ξαναδούμε όλα απ’ την αρχή: κλούβες, ΜΑΤ, κάθε αστυνομική επιχειρησιακή τακτική

We’ll abolish the use of chemicals [teargas etc.]. Everyone will bear identifying insignia. We’ll review everything from scratch: police vans, riot squads, every police operational tactic

… and issued repeated reassurances that all incidents of police misconduct will be investigated:

…Δουλεύουμε σκληρά. H Ρώμη δεν χτίστηκε σε μια μέρα. Σε κανένα μέτωπο.

…We’re working hard. Rome wasn’t built in a day. On any front.

However, local citizen journalist Tom Tziros noted parallels on the similarities of police tactics during this year’s protests and the 2003 Thessaloniki European Union Summit riots, and commented on the minister’s previous record:

στις 21 Ιουνίου εκείνης της χρονιάς αστυνομικοί συλλαμβάνουν τον βρετανό υπήκοο Σάιμον Τσάπμαν και τον κατηγορούν ότι είχε μολότωφ και σακίδιο με βόμβες μολότωφ και σφυριά. Για καλή του τύχη, βίντεο της ΕΤ3 απέδειξε πέραν πάσης αμφιβολίας ότι το σακίδιο δεν ήταν δικό του. Ένα χρόνο μετά αθωώθηκε αλλά δεν τιμωρήθηκε κανένας αστυνομικός.
Στην ίδια πόλη [προχθές], αστυνομικοί συλλάβανε έναν άνθρωπο που κατέβηκε με τις πυτζάμες του να πετάξει τα σκουπίδια και προσπαθήσανε να του”φυτέψουνε” και αυτουνού σακίδιο. Ευτυχώς βίντεο διαδηλωτή τον αθώωσε. Πάλι δεν τιμωρήθηκε κανένας αστυνομικός. Το κοινό στοιχείο, εκτός της πόλης, των δυο ιστοριών; Μα απλά και μόνο ο υπουργός, τότε [..] και τώρα.

… on June 21 of that year, police arrest British national Simon Chapman, accusing him of carrying a backpack filled with firebombs and hammers. Luckily for him, a video by [national TV station] ET3 proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the backpack wasn’t his. He was acquitted a year later, but no police officers were punished.
In the same city [two days ago], police arrested a man in pajamas, taking out the garbage, and also tried to “plant” a backpack on him. Again, no police officers were punished. The common element in the two stories, besides the city? Simply, the minister in charge, then and now.

Veteran blogger Mihalis Panagiotakis, wryly commented on the minister’s new communication strategy, and his controversial statement defending mass preemptive detentions:

επειδή σύμφωνα με τις νέες εξαγγελίες του κ. Υπουργού όλοι είμαστε υπό προσαγωγή [..], θα μπορούμε να στέλνουμε μαζικά sms tweets από τα κρατητήρια στον Υπουργό κάθε φορά που θα μας έχουν μπουζουριάσει αδίκως. Κάτι σαν αντίστροφο flashmobbing. Σκοπεύω, μάλιστα, να προτείνω στον κ. Χρυσοχοΐδη να δημιουργήσει και αποθετήριο MMS σε ιστοχώρο του Υπουργείου του, όπου θα μπορούν τα θύματα των δυνάμεων καταστολής να αναρτούν αυτόματα τα αποδεικτικά στοιχεία της αυθαιρεσίας των οργάνων της τάξης. Αυτό θα ήταν μια πραγματικά χρήσιμη προσφορά προς τον Έλληνα πολίτη.

… since, according to the Minister’s new proclamations, we’re all under detention [...], we’ll be able to send him mass SMS tweets from the holding cells every time we’ll be unfairly busted. Kinda like a reverse flashmobbing. Moreover, I intend to propose that Mr. Chrisochoidis creates an MMS repository for suppression victims to automatically upload evidence of police misconduct. That would truly be a useful service to Greek citizens.

Aptly summing up the general frustration with the unending cycle violence, film director Constantin Pilavios – a resident of the troubled Exarchia district of Athens, who last year sent out the first reported tweet about the murder of Grigoropoulos tweeted (and was re-tweeted repeatedly):

Πέτρες, φωτιές, μπάτσοι δακρυγόνα… Φαύλος κύκλος. Η επανάσταση πρέπει να γίνει πρώτα μέσα μας και μετά στους δρόμους #griots

Greece has been embroiled in a row over abusive migrant detentions and the lip service paid so far by the new socialist government to honor its pledges to reform the police. Two days before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, an incident of police brutality against a migrant mother and her child in Athens caused an uproar that have triggered new government promises for police reform.

Photojournalist and blogger Craig Wherlock translated from reports in Greek media:

a 35 year old Armenian woman was beaten, handcuffed and detained in front of her two year old child [..] in Athens last Thursday [..] When she went to get the pushchair carrying her child they grabbed her, pushed her to the ground, kicking and punching her in the belief she was resisting arrest. The hapless mother was handcuffed and taken with her child to the Aghios Panteleimonos police department where she was kept for four hours.

The incident was promptly reported on Twitter by Cyberela:

Citizen Protection minister Michalis Chrisochoidis was harangued by demands to take action. On Twitter vivian_e said:

@chrisochoides Υπουργέ, δεν πάει άλλο η κατάσταση με την αστυνομική βία. Πρέπει να υπάρξουν παραδειγματικές τιμωρίες. Άμεσα

@chrisochoides Minister, it’s gone far enough with police violence. Exemplary punishments must be handed out. Immediately

Half an hour after the first tweet, the minister’s office responded directly to citizens for the first time through Twitter:

Η Υπηρεσία Δίωξης Ηλεκτρονικού Εγκλήματος με έγγραφό της, μου ζητάει, ως διαχειριστή του ιστοτόπου radiobubble.gr, και μετά από σχετική εισαγγελική παραγγελία, να της γνωστοποιήσω “τα στοιχεία (ip address) του κατόχου του προφίλ Panos_Michail κατά τις ημερομηνίες 1 Νοεμβρίου και 9 Νοεμβρίου”.

1. Το radiobubble δε διατηρεί τις IP του χρηστών του. Οι IP θα μπορούσαν πιθανά να ανασυρθούν μέσω των log files του server μας, όμως
2. Θεωρούμε εκτός των ορίων της δεοντολογίας μας, του νόμου και του Συντάγματος της Ελλάδας, την παροχή προσωπικών στοιχείων των χρηστών μας.
3. Ο χρήστης με user name Panos_Michail… είναι ο Πάνος Μιχαήλ.

Ποτέ δεν το κρύψαμε, και ποτέ δεν το έκρυψε.

Το ζωντανό πρόγραμμα, αυτό που εκπέμπεται από το στούντιο μας, αποτελείται εξ ολοκλήρου από ανθρώπους επώνυμους που με την ιδιότητα του δημοσιογράφου, του συγγραφέα, του σκηνοθέτη, του ποιητή, του λάτρη της μουσικής, του blogger, του ενεργού πολίτη εν γένει, δημιουργούν και εκπέμπουν ραδιοφωνικές εκπομπές.

Εκπομπές (επιτρέψτε μας) υψηλού επιπέδου, που τιμούν και το radiobubble και εν γένει τις έννοιες “δημόσιος λόγος”, “δημοσιογραφία”,  “τέχνη”, “ραδιόφωνο” και “νέα μέσα”.

Ακόμη και οι bloggers που εκπέμπουν τις εκπομπές τους μέσω του radiobubble χρησιμοποιώντας μόνο το διαδικτυακό τους ψευδώνυμο, είναι πρόσωπα ιδιαιτέρως γνωστά στη διαδικτυακή κοινότητα και την ελληνική κοινωνία…
Όσα βγαίνουν στον αέρα από τα μικρόφωνά μας, ακολουθούν πιστά όχι μόνο τους νόμους, αλλά και -με δική μας πρωτοβουλία- τον κώδικα δεοντολογίας της ΕΣΗΕΑ, της οποίας άλλωστε αρκετά μέλη της κοινότητάς μας είναι μέλη.

Εγώ προσωπικά, ως διαχειριστής του ιστοτόπου, αναλαμβάνω με ιδιαίτερη χαρά και ικανοποίηση την ευθύνη όσων εκπέμπονται από το ζωντανό μας πρόγραμμα.

Επίσης, μαζί με τον Πάνο, θα γνωστοποιήσουμε και τυπικά στις αρχές… τα ήδη  γνωστά σε όλους στοιχεία του. Και θα περιμένουμε τις εξελίξεις, ώστε να απαντήσουμε αναλόγως.

Μέχρι τότε, καλούμε κάθε νοήμονα ενεργό πολίτη αυτής της χώρας και ιδιαίτερα τη διαδικτυακή κοινότητα να ενημερωθεί και να ευαισθητοποιηθεί για το θέμα.

Σας προτείνουμε, καταρχάς, να ακούσετε την εκπομπή του Πάνου της 1/11/2009 την οποία θα  βρείτε εδώ, καθώς και την εκπομπή της 9/11/2009 που θα βρείτε εδώ ώστε να αποκτήσετε προσωπική άποψη για το περί τίνος πρόκειται.

Μόνο να εικάσω θα μπορούσα αυτή τη στιγμή ποιός ή ποιοί, λανθασμένα θα μπορούσαν να θεωρήσουν εαυτόν θιγόμενο…

Eάν σήμερα ξεκινάει μια νέα εποχή για το ελληνικό διαδίκτυο και για αυτό που μέχρι σήμερα γνωρίζαμε ως δημόσιο λόγο, είναι κάτι που θα το διαπιστώσουμε παρέα το επόμενο διάστημα.

Το σίγουρο είναι, ότι όποια κι αν είναι αυτή η “νέα εποχή”, θα κάνουμε τα αδύνατα δυνατά ώστε να φέρει ως συστατικά στοιχεία της, όλα εκείνα για τα οποία επί χρόνια δουλεύουμε σκληρά και έχουν να κάνουν με την ελευθερία του λόγου και της έκφρασης.

Όλα αυτά που μας έφεραν κοντά με χιλιάδες ανθρώπους και έκαναν κάτι παραπάνω από ευανάγνωστο το ποιός είναι ο λόγος ύπαρξης και η προσφορά του διαδικτύου και των νέων μέσων.

Τα οποία νέα μέσα, όσο περνάει από το χέρι μας, δε θα γίνουν παλιά.

Με την ελπίδα να κερδίσει η λογική…

This year’s Blog Action Day was aimed at raising awareness about climate change. More than 150 Greek bloggers registered to participate, with their contributions tinged by the devastation wrought by forest fires and echoing desperation at the lack of environmental policy.

Thirdeye tried to connect the local with the global by reminding us of the fires that devastated Greece in recent years:

Στην Ελλάδα ζήσαμε πυρκαγιές τα τελευταία χρόνια που συνεισφέρουν πολλές αρνητικές συνέπειες για το κλιματικό μέλλον της χωράς. Οι εναλλακτικές πηγές ενεργείας δεν είναι αστειάκι στα πολιτικά πηγαδάκια αλλά κοινωνική ανάγκη. Όχι μόνο στην Ελλάδα αλλά σε ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη.[..]

Δεν γνωρίζω τι μπορεί να συμβεί απλά το φαντάζομαι. Επειδή όμως ονειρεύομαι ένα καλύτερο μέλλον υποστηρίζω και υπογράφω το Hopenhagen και συμμετέχω στο Blog Action Day.

In Greece, we witnessed fires in recent years that contribute negatively to the climate future of the country. Alternative energy sources are not a joke for political smalltalk but a social need, not only in Greece but around the globe. Roides posited that political correctness and patriotism trump sound environmental policy in Greece and ticked off policy failures:

Γι αυτό και εμείς αφήσαμε πίσω 67 νεκρούς, κάψαμε 3 εκατομμύρια στρέμματα δασών, δασικών και γεωργικών εκτάσεων και ως πολιτική απάντηση δώσαμε/πήραμε πολύ σημαντικά μέτρα, όπως:
- διαλύσαμε την δασική υπηρεσία
- (δεν) συντάξαμε δασολόγιο
- εξαγγείλαμε στεντορείως και ευρέως το περίφημο: «ότι ήταν δάσος θα παραμείνει δάσος» [..]

That’s why we left 67 people dead, burned 3 million hectares of forest and farmland, and politically responded by instituting important measures such as:

• disbanding the forestry department
• not compiling a forest registry
• widely and pompously announced that “what was a forest will remain a forest” [..]

Rodia railed at the environmental disconnect:

Το περιβάλλον και η προστασία του, έτσι, γενικά και αόριστα, είναι μια φόλα, μια μούφα, μια παραπλάνηση, να το γράψω και ευγενικά. Δεν μπορεί οι εταιρείες να αλωνίζουν με τις βιομηχανίες τους, τα φουγάρα τους, τα χημικά βλαβερά τους απόβλητα, δεν μπορεί οι μεγάλες χώρες να μην έχουν υπογράψει βασικές συνθήκες προστασίας του περιβάλλοντος (π.χ. ΗΠΑ, συνθήκη Κιότο) και να ζητιέται απο τα ταπεινά ανθρωπάκια, εμάς δλδ, να προσέχουμε μη πατήσουμε το χορτάρι!

The environment and it’s protection, in vague terms, is a pipe dream, a misdirection, to put it politely. You can’t have corporations running amuck with their factories, smokestacks and chemical waste, you can’t have large countries not signing basic treaties to protect the environment (eg the US not ratifying Kyoto), and ask us little people to mind the grass!

… but still went on to propose local scale solutions:

Εμείς μπορούμε να κάνουμε μικρούτσικα πραγματάκια, στη κλίμακά μας, που λένε. Να φροντίζουμε για τα σκουπίδια που παράγουμε και, αναλόγως, να τα πετάμε ή να τα ανακυκλίζουμε. Να φροντίζουμε τη καθαριότητα των ακτών της χώρας μας. Να προσέχουμε τα πάρκα μας -όσα απομείναν, δλδ- μη τα κάνει γκαράζ κάνας πρόθυμος δήμαρχος. Να καταγγέλουμε όποια εταιρεία ή βιομήχανο καταστρέφει τον υδροφόρο ορίζοντα, γιατί εκείνος μπορεί να στείλει τα παιδιά του να ζήσουν στην Ελβετία ή στις Μπαχάμες, αλλά εμείς θα εξακολουθούμε να ζούμε εδώ και να χρειαζόμαστε νερό πόσιμο. Να χρησιμοποιούμε τα Μέσα Μαζικής Μεταφοράς [..] και να πιέζουμε προς τα καλύτερα και πυκνότερα δρομολόγια

We can do little things, within our scale, so to speak. Disposing or recycling the garbage we produce. Keeping our beaches clean. Taking care of our parks -the ones that are left, anyway- and keeping them from being turned into parking lots by wily mayors. Reporting any industrialists that pollute the water table, because they can send their kids to live in Switzerland or the Bahamas, but we’ll continue to live here and to need potable water. Using mass transport and pressing for better and more frequent routes

Two years ago I was part of the first blog action day which had as a theme the climate change. Two years later the issue remains the same. So my contribution remains the same.

Nothing was solved the last two years, so I won’t change anything

As for me, I don’t believe symbolic days can change anything (this year’s Blog Action Day didn’t even manage to garner 10.000 registrations), but the UN Climate Change Conference is less than 2 months away, and anything that can raise awareness to help put some pressure on world leaders to attend and enact binding policies is probably worth a shot.

Οι διακοπές μου ήταν καλές και αναζωογονητικές, οι μακρύτερες σε διάρκεια που έχω κάνει εδώ και πολλά χρόνια, μακριά απ’ την πόλη μου που είχα μπουχτίσει, και, ως επί το πλείστον, μακριά απ’ το κουρμπέτι του ψηφιακού ακτιβισμού και της δημοσιογραφίας στα social media που προσπάθησα να υπηρετήσω την περασμένη χρονιά σε ρυθμούς συχνά εξοντωτικούς και με αποτελέσματα αμφίβολα.

Αντί για τη Θεσσαλονίκη, έκανα προσωρινά έδρα μου την άδεια Αθήνα κι εξορμούσα στα νησιά του Αιγαίου χωρίς σχέδιο, ιδιαίτερες προσδοκίες ή έντονη αίσθηση του χρόνου, συναντώντας φίλους, απολαμβάνοντας την έκθεση στα στοιχεία της φύσης, την διαρκή αλλαγή παραστάσεων (για την οποία διψούσα εδώ και καιρό), τον συγχρωτισμό με νέους ανθρώπους αλλά και την απομόνωση του ταξιδιού. Ο χρόνος γίνεται απολαυστικά ελαστικός τέτοιες στιγμές: απ’ τη μιά να να διαγράφεις νευρωτικές κινήσεις Brown στο αστικό τοπίο για να προλάβεις να συναντήσεις όσο περισσότερους φίλους μπορείς και να τρέχεις με τα μπαγκάζια για να προλάβεις πλοία την τελευταία στιγμή, κι απ’ την άλλη να περιφέρεσαι άσκοπα σε νησιωτικά χωριά, επαρχιακούς δρόμους και κάμπινγκ και να ρεμβάζεις με τις ώρες σε παραλίες.

Κατά διαστήματα, έριχνα κλεφτές ματιές στην επικαιρότητα και την κοινωνία των social media όποτε έβρισκα ασύρματη σύνδεση, διαπιστώνοντας με σχετική κατάπληξη ότι όντως ο φετινός Αύγουστος δεν είχε ειδήσεις. Μέχρι ενός σημείου. Η κατάληξη των διακοπών έγινε με τον καλύτερο τρόπο: λίγες χαλαρές μέρες με μικρή παρέα, ευνοϊκές συγκυρίες και λίγο ρομάντζο σ’ ένα κοντινό κι οικείο -αλλά ειδυλλιακό, λόγω της έλλειψης κόσμου- μέρος. Ήταν για λίγο σαν να σταμάτησε ο χρόνος. Το δίδαγμα του φετινού καλοκαιριού ήταν η απλότητα: δεν χρειάζεσαι την επιτήδευση και τον καταναλωτισμό για να νιώσεις ότι κάνεις διακοπές, αλλά και γενικά ότι ζεις, να ξεφεύγεις απ’ όσα σε κατατρέχουν. Ένα δίδαγμα που ξαναμαθαίνουμε όλοι τα καλοκαίρια, αν είμαστε τυχεροί, και ξεχνάμε τον υπόλοιπο χρόνο.

Η θερινή ραστώνη έλαβε απότομα τέλος στις 21 Αυγούστου -πάνω ακριβώς που γυρνούσα από τις διακοπές- όταν ξεκίνησαν οι φωτιές που κατέκαψαν την ΒΑ Αττική, σαν εφιαλτικό replay των πυρκαγιών του ‘07.

Το τρίτο μου άρθρο για το Global Voices ήταν αφιερωμένο στις αντιδράσεις των ελληνικών social media για τις πυρκαγιές, γραμμένο την ώρα που προσπαθούσα να προσαρμοστώ απότομα στην πραγματικότητα, να συνέλθω απ’ το μούδιασμα και να νιώσω κάτι γι’ αυτό που συνέβαινε. Τελικά, φαίνεται πως οι πυρκαγιές του ‘07 έκαψαν κι όλες τις αντιδράσεις μέσα μου, όπως και στους περισσότερους Έλληνες: οργή, θλίψη, δυσπιστία. Πλέον έχουμε συνηθίσει να βλέπουμε τη χώρα να καίγεται, τον κρατικό μηχανισμό να ολιγωρεί και να επιτρέπει σε μια σπίθα να κατατρώει ολόκληρους νομούς, τους πολιτικούς και τους ιθύνοντες να περιφέρονται στα κανάλια προσφέροντας τετριμμένες δικαιολογίες κι ανταλλάσσοντας κατηγορίες, την απόλυτη ατιμωρησία κι έλλειψη απόδοσης ευθυνών, τα κανάλια να υποκαθιστούν την πολιτική προστασία, μοιράζοντας πυροσβεστικά οχήματα -όπως κάποτε οι ραδιοπειρατές ζητήσεις κομματιών- τους πυροσβέστες να παλεύουν χωρίς εξοπλισμό, γνώση του δάσους και συντονισμό, προδομένοι συχνά απ’ τις σκοπιμότητες.

Αυτή τη φορά, οι φωτιές έσβησαν σχετικά “γρήγορα”, χωρίς να υπάρξουν ανθρώπινα θύματα, και χωρίς να περάσουν σε “σημαίνουσες” κατοικημένες περιοχές. Που σημαίνει ότι κανείς δε θα κλάψει για τα δάση ή για τα ζώα που κάηκαν κι εκτοπίστηκαν. Και μετά; Πάλι εκλογές, με την Βουλή κλειστή πρόωρα αυτή τη φορά, να έχει νομοθετήσει νέους χαλκάδες εις βάρος κι ερήμην του λαού που έλειπε στα μπάνια του. Πάλι θα ξεχάσουμε και θα ψηφίσουμε τους (α-)καταλληλότερους, παγιδευμένοι σ’ ένα παρακμασμένο, κυνικό κι απάνθρωπο ολιγαρχικό σύστημα που μας κλέβει κραυγαλέα την εκπροσώπηση, και το οποίο διαιωνίζουμε με την αδιαφορία και τη μοιρολατρία μας.

Στις 3 του Σεπτέμβρη έκλεισα τα 40 μου χρόνια, περιτριγυρισμένος από καλούς φίλους και γνωστούς σ’ ένα -κατά κοινή ομολογία- επιτυχημένο πάρτι, απ’ αυτά που έπρεπε να κάνω εδώ και χρόνια (κάλλιο αργά παρά ποτέ). Και να ήθελα, δε θα μπορούσα να ξεχάσω την ηλικία μου, αφού μαζί με μένα φέτος σαραντάρισαν η κατάκτηση της Σελήνης, το Woodstock και γενικά το αξέχαστο 1969, το κύκνειο άσμα της γενιάς των 60’s. Την εποχή εκείνη διαδέχθηκαν δεκαετίες συντηρητισμού που έφεραν την ανθρωπότητα στο χείλος της καταστροφής, και μόλις τα τελευταία χρόνια το πνεύμα της συλλογικότητας άρχισε να αναδύεται ξανά, μέσα απ’ τις τεκτονικές πιέσεις της κλιματικής αλλαγής, της πληθυσμιακής έκρηξης, της νεοφιλελεύθερης παγκοσμιοποίησης και της επανάστασης του κοινωνικού διαδικτύου.

Μία ευχή έχω να κάνω για τα χρόνια που έρχονται: η παγκόσμια συλλογικότητα αυτή να συνειδητοποιήσει τη δύναμή της γρήγορα και να κάνει πράξη την ειρηνική αναγέννηση της πολιτικής, του τρόπου ζωής, της οικονομίας και του πολιτισμού που χρειάζεται η ανθρωπότητα πριν να είναι αργά. Κυριολεκτικά, είμαστε η τελευταία μας ελπίδα.

Όσο για τους πολιτικούς, μπορούν να συνεχίσουν να διακονούν το διεφθαρμένο σύστημα και την αδηφάγα απληστία τους, μπαίνοντας εμπόδιο στην αειφορία του πολιτισμού μας, ή -όπως ο γερουσιαστής Ted Kennedy, ένας απ’ τους σημαντικότερους αμερικανούς νομοθέτες, που πέθανε πρόσφατα- να συμβάλλουν στην ανανέωση της κοινωνίας μας’ ξεπερνώντας τις καταβολές τους κι υπερνικώντας τον κυνισμό του συστήματος που τους ανέδειξε, διαλέγοντας να υπηρετήσουν τους συμπολίτες τους και την ανθρωπότητα.

Πολλά θα ‘θελα ακόμα να προσθέσω σ’ αυτό το post, αλλά καλύτερα να το κλείσω εδώ και να τα κρατήσω για κάποια επόμενα. Εξάλλου, υποσχέθηκα στον εαυτό μου ότι θα γράφω συχνότερα φέτος, κι η τελειομανία δεν βοηθάει σ’ αυτό.

ΥΓ: Απενεργοποίησα το Twitter Tools plugin που χρησιμοποιούσα για καταγραφή των tweets μου εδώ, αφού, όπως διαπίστωσε κι ο nikan, το προσωπικό blog δεν είναι το καλύτερο μέρος για αυτοματοποιημένο lifestreaming. Θα βρω μιά καλύτερη λύση για να αποθηκεύω τα tweets μου.
