Last month I had a chance to work with some HOT local Northwest talent, VELO and Cannoli.  For those of you in Seattle who don’t know – when these to forces of hotness come together, there’s no stopping them!  Sexy, raw, and in your face…that’s what you get when you watch these two dance it out.  Their latest work, a cover version of the song Werk Me, originally by Hyper Crush, takes on an entirely new flavor when SLM remixes it to become a fresh new hip hop sound.  The mashup with SLM’s Dirty Love comes as a surprise, previously written as an instrumental demo.  Now, combining talent from multiple sources I’m able to present to you a lot of action in just 2:00 minutes.

Lost In A Digital World

That’s the title of my first completed, self-produced cinematic album that I began recording in 2010. I wrote some of the original piano versions of the melodies during the past 20 years and then later expanded them. If you’re an artist, then you know that the timeline for reaching goals, especially personal ones, does not always match up to our dreams. I kept my sights low. My original idea was to professionally record a couple songs on the piano for fun. I mean to say that – that would have been plenty to make me happy, in the beginning. Consistently, things added up to what now totals close to 100 pieces of new music that I’ve produced during the past 3 years…, some as singles, some for clients, some for albums and others available for licensing via MIBE.

I admit that while not having the resources I really wanted (an acoustic piano, full orchestra and million dollar recording studio), I utilized the best equipment I had to create these recordings – my own brain, a laptop, a digital piano, a couple keyboards and a few software programs – nothing too fancy. I put it all to good use during a very difficult time (physically, mentally, financially), and began writing lots of music. That helped me to focus on what’s important in my life and to satisfy a deep need to contribute something to the world.

My need to connect with people through music and find a true audience became ongoing. Bouncing back from my music studies, which began over 10 years ago, and my fantasy to become a composer since age 7, I hit the record button many times. Without judging too harshly and letting the muse guide the process, I realized that I had a lot to say. My new musical expressions and arrangements then unfolded dramatically. Some might say too dramatically, meaning that there is a large sense of fantasy in most of my compositions and likewise with the music you’ll hear on the album, “Lost In A Digital World”. It’s film music.

Here are a few selections:

Threading together this blanket of sound, I remembered years ago how albums came about more often as a complete work – to be listened to and enjoyed as a whole, and not picked apart to be released one single mp3 at a time. With “Lost In A Digital World”, I’ve created a collection of instrumental music, intentionally arranged from start to finish, that claims to tell a story.  Without describing the background of each of the eleven songs on the album here, the body of work reflects my mixed emotions about uprooting from the South and moving to the great Northwest years ago.  I envisioned a kind of soundtrack that awakens your imagination and paints emotional images in your mind.  I intend for this story of music to become meaningful to you.

Jumping off a diving board into whatever comes next, I’ve been transitioning into more intermediate and professional aspects of my musical career. No one is meant to reach their goals alone and so, welcoming a more collaborative path, I seek opportunities with other artists; vocalists, DJs, film makers, and musicians to continue working to create something bigger and longer-lasting than my physical self. I simply want to write music, because that is what I do…like breathing, it keeps me alive.

Allow me to reintroduce Nick James, a British singer-songwriter who’s been busy pursuing a few varied musical avenues.  A while back, one of those avenues lead to me and we’ve been working together on and off for almost a year now.  I’ve been impressed with Nick’s ability to write lyrics and sing – obviously, along with his eagerness and determination in taking direction from across the planet.  Together we’re able to produce original music coming from two cities almost 5000 miles apart.  You see, I live in Seattle, Washington and Nick is from Birmingham, just outside of London in the U.K.  It’s been very interesting and challenging at times since we have yet to meet in person, and we each have our own approach to creativity – studio time, equipment, and technical abilities.  I do not sing, and thankfully Nick’s voice has been a pleasure to mix and edit.

It’s such an unconventional way of managing things in comparison to the industry’s past.  I mean, c’mon now – 20 years ago we would have hardly thought about such a long distance “studio” working relationship.  It’s like if you imagine a small band of strangers with each of it’s members recording their tracks in a different state and then combining all of the material into one cohesive piece of music…to make a song that feels right emotionally and technically, to find a happy listener.  Really?

Besides, technology has only recently evolved to easily and effectively manage the components across the miles.  I’m talking partly about virtual workspace, more specifically – online business relations.  Years ago, large file sharing was almost impossible and USB microphones, powerful laptops, and services like that of Drop Box did not exist.  At least not in a highly efficient way that would allow a “virtual band set up” for home studio recording.  Also, through venues such as Sound Cloud, CD Baby, and Spotify nowadays – some of us musicians are writing, recording, producing, marketing, selling, and managing the administrative sides of things…all with respect to each other’s intellectual property.  At least that’s best case scenario and still many things could fall through the cracks if you’re not careful. Many musicians don’t have the patience to be administrators.  In my case, I’ve also been a mentor in that regard.  In the digital realm of independent artists, you have to be both creative and business savvy, otherwise you may find yourself an agent, manager, publisher, A & R rep, studio, mixer, audio master…bla bla bla, if you can afford it all.

So far it’s not ideal, but managing some of the mundane recording and publishing aspects for the work between Nick and myself seems to be worth it, and fun.  I’m not sure we’ve found our best audience yet, but we’re definitely excited to simply create something new and open ourselves up to other opportunities, together and individually.

Nick and I have tackled a few projects that became interesting to each of us for different reasons. For example, our favorite styles and genres originate from slightly different focal points…mine being more on cinematic themes and dance music, while Nick’s first interest is in folk music and pop.  An unlikely match at first, we ventured to find a common ground to both hit the record button and mix a few tracks.  Although it may be easier to do if we lived in the same town, we did not let the distance discourage us from completing a few goals. Decide for yourself if we’re on the right track (haha) and if, for whatever reason, you like what we do.  Our music is not for everyone, but for those of you who have ears, you may enjoy it.

Are you an artist, musician, singer?  I encourage you to get your practical experience somewhere and grow from there.  Since my experience with Nick, I’ve landed multiple projects – scoring an animated series, independent short films, a second vocalist, and some additional remixing work – ALL long distance from within the U.S. Certainly if you’re not getting what you need locally to keep busy, then consider working with anyone, anywhere and be prepared for some daunting tasks in order for things to go smoothly. That’s why it’s called work. Cheers!

Music for Your Film

Whenever I have the chance to imagine doing something different like writing lyrical dance music – I get excited. You see, it’s been one of my goals to write more dance music, more lyrical pieces, either for placement in film, advertising, etc. or simply to be released independently as singles. In some cases, I realize that it’s going to require collaboration with other artists, musicians, vocalists to ultimately get the sound that I want. Ok, so I’m NOT too old to form a band…right? Haha. For now I’ve been brushing up on my skills; remixing, remastering, arranging, experimenting with samples and a cappella vocal tracks. If you’re an artist who may be interested in working together on a project, then please get in touch. I’m always looking for opportunities to grow and share.

Earlier this year I was approached for a review of my song “Until Sunrise” by Sound Cloud Music Reviews.  

This adventurous animated short film directed by Fugdale follows the epic fantasy of a young cowboy and his horse as they traverse their dream world (and beyond) moving through multiple exotic locations in a delightful animated style.

The film was made to showcase the electronic dance song “Electric Cowboy” by SLM and features a combination of hand-drawn images, colorful scenes and ever-changing landscapes.

Director of animation and effects, Doug Fahl, utilized Motion 5 software to create a unique movement to the piece. Scott Lawrence (aka SLM) composed the original single.

This fully animated music video for Fugdale’s cracked-out song “Millicent and Madison” utilizes frenetic 2D and 3D animation, bright colors and kinetic typography.

The story of two unfortunate teenagers whose very existence prevents them from being invited to parties and having friends. If you’ve ever been bullied, you might identify with these two below-average individuals. The twist? This video shows the lives of Millicent and Madison through the eyes of the bully. Watch these kids get teased, abused and mangled from the perspective of the perp.

Using Motion 5, Illustrator, Photoshop and Final Cut Pro X, Fugdale brings you an epic cartoon that is both endearing and mean-spirited at the same time–Colorful, humorous, fast-paced and kitschy all at once.

Check out my latest recording project with British singer-songwriter Nick James, based on his original song – “This Is Life”. Together, Nick and I collaborated on creating a new sound.
