Poll: Mass. residents continue to back casinos

2008-05-05T20:25:00.000-04:00

DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- A new gambling study shows some Massachusetts residents who have not supported casinos in the past may be changing their minds.

"Fifty-seven percent of Massachusetts residents still favor two or more resort casinos in the state of Massachusetts. That number is actually four percent higher than when we last did this poll in September," said Dr. Clyde Barrow, a public policy analyst at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

The study was funded by a real estate development firm with land interests in the proposed Palmer and New Bedford casino sites.

The research showed that as the state's deficit soars above $1 billion, so does the interest in casino and racetrack gambling.

"People are starting to look at casinos as a possible source of revenue," Barrow said.

The study polled 427 Massachusetts residents last week after the House's vote that killed Gov. Deval Patrick's four-casino proposal.

The study found that for the first time, suburban residents support casinos by a larger margin that urban residents. More residents said they want gambling revenues to go to local aid, not personal property tax relief.

For the first time, men and women had identical levels of support for gambling, and just over 50 percent said they want the Legislature to authorize slots at racetracks.

According to the study, slots at racetracks in Massachusetts could mean millions in lost revenue for Rhode Island.

Barrow said Rhode Island could lose $100 million to $150 million a year.

But there are certainly those Massachusetts residents who disagree with bringing in gambling to fix the economy.

"I certainly don't support gambling. I think it's a waste of money," one woman said.

The study found that the highest level of support for racinos -- racetracks with slots -- is in the New Bedford area. The lowest level of support was in central Massachusetts.

Met Police withdraw anti-gambling posters depicting Bill Clinton

2008-05-05T07:48:00.003-04:00

from the Telegraph

The Metropolitan police have embarrassingly removed posters which used a cartoon of a "shifty" looking Bill Clinton to warn of the dangers of gambling.

Bill Clinton depicted in the Metropolitan Police's poster

It emerged yesterday that community police officers in east London had produced the posters proclaiming: "Street Gamblers: Don't Give Them Your Money!" with an image of the former American president looming over a gambling table, with his large hands planted next to a three-card trick.

The image was drawn by the Australian Pulitzer prizewinning cartoonist and can be viewed at the Library of Congress on Capitol Hill.

Scotland Yard became aware of the posters yesterday and in a statement said that they have "since been removed".

BIG WINS IN INTERNET CASINOS

2008-05-03T17:44:00.002-04:00

European online gamblers score big

Several online players hit into big money at online casinos over recent weeks, winning six figure amounts on both progressives and standard slots.

At the Playtech-powered Europa Casino, a Norwegian player using the handle SisselA was described as 'ecstatic' over a Euro 289 500 hit on the progressive jackpot, Queen of Pyramids. Sissel had been a member of the online casino for less than two weeks when she struck it lucky after wagering a mere Euro 2.25 bet.

In an interview with Europa Casino management, an Sissel said that she prefers to play at online casinos for convenience, privacy and security....and tends to stay calmer and more controlled when placing her bets.

Players at Europa have been fortunate lately with a number of big wins, including an extraordinary progressive hit on the Diamond Valley progressive by GuyJ. of Luxembourg who scored a major Euro 125 137 win on a stake of only Euro 5.

Later in the week, a 30-year-old unnamed player from Denmark won a remarkable Euro 323 578 in one day at Windows Casino.... all without hitting any progressive jackpots.

A press release from the casino reveals that the player is a relatively new arrival at Windows, who deposited Euro 110 and managed through good fortune to make it go a long way!

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like this,” Greg Gomez, the Windows Casino’s manager, opined. “This is one of the biggest wins we have ever seen at Windows Casino and certainly one that we will remember for many years”.

The lucky Dane achieved extraordinarily good results playing on a number of slots games: On 'Football Rules' he won Euro 224 000, on 'Desert Treasure' Euro 70 000 and by adding smaller wins from all the other slots games he played, he ultimately won in total a bank-boosting Euro 323 578 in prize money.

Backgammon Masters turns to ‘21′

2008-04-23T22:15:00.002-04:00

Gaming company enlists movie Blackjack team
LONDON — BackgammonMasters Online Game Operators of popular games such as 21 Blackjack, Poker and Backgammon plan to enlist the MIT “Blackjack Teams” to test their new BlackJack platform and Basic Blackjack Calculator.
With the recent release of the Hollywood Movie “21″ starring Kevin Spacey based on the book “Bringing Down the House” by Ben Mezrich, about a team of MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) students who formed teams of card counters who were able to beat the odds in the Las Vegas Casinos, BackgammonMasters has decided to put their software to the ultimate brain test and see how they measure up.

BackgammonMasters multiplayer 21 BlackJack game seats five players at a time playing against the dealer. The Blackjack game rooms will incorporate an innovative basic Blackjack strategy calculator which allows players to increase their odds by querying their next move. The calculator will increase the players’ odds for “perfect play” and actually assist those who practice counting cards.

The online playing environment differs from the offline Las Vegas Casino games containing variables that may not be seen in offline play in addition to different standards for the number of decks and randomness of cards. Now players will not overlook possible hand decisions because the calculator helps players more quickly recognize all the possible choices in each hand. The MIT Team will have a distinct challenge in adapting their methods to increase their odds of winning in the online software version of this extensively studied game.

Man Up $2,000,000 loses everything plus $500 …

2008-04-20T19:09:00.003-04:00

by Online Casino Action

Gambling and emotions are tightly entwined. They are also two things that should never go hand and hand. We’ve all heard the stories. Someone is at the table and is up $5,000 only to lose that and more over the next hour or so. We all have that feeling of invincibility when we are on a winning streak. So how do we separate our emotions from the gambling aspect? Think about how lousy it feels to lose. And if you do lose, think of this story your about to read, and feel better knowing you didn’t lose this big.

This is a true story … a man places a bet with Vegas at the beginning of the 2007 - 2008 NFL season. He bets $500 that the Patriots will go undefeated including winning the Super Bowl. If he wins, his $500 becomes $8,000,000 (that’s right, $8 MILLION). Ahh, but there’s a twist. You see, the house never loses. And, if they do, they are going to make it difficult for you to win their money, and that’s precisely what they did.

The New England Patriots did go undefeated and made it to the Superbowl. But Vegas, like the banker in the TV show Deal or No Deal, wasn’t going to go down without a fight. They wanted to cut their losses. Vegas contacted this person one week before the big game and offered him $2,000,000 (that’s right, $2 MILLION) to buy out his bet.

Well, this person was thinking emotionally and emotions will cloud your judgement everytime. How could his New England Patriots lose, he thought, even Vegas had them favored by 14 points. His answer … “No Way”. I want my $8,000,000 dollars.

Well, the New England Patriots who were the favorite, lost that Sunday evening. And this gambler who refused to see the forest through the trees, lost not only his $8,000,000 or the sure thing of $2,000,000 but also his $500.

Whenever you are up at the casino, move on. Like Kenny Rogers sings in the Gambler, “You’ve got to know when to walk away”. The moral to this story is always, always take the sure thing!

Planning to win on your next trip to that casino

2008-04-20T19:06:00.002-04:00

by Staff of Online Casino Action

There’s an old adage out there that goes like this … no one plans to fail, but many fail to plan. Here’s a little bit of twist to link this to winning or losing at the casino … Nobody plans to lose, but losers fail to plan. I know the talk is tough, but it’s true.

Many people go to the casinos to “learn” to play the game. Bad move. Having your hard-earned cash on the table at risk is not the time to be learning the rules. Take the time prior to going to the casino to learn the rules, tips and the game itself. Doing so will at least increase your odds of winning and that is what we are trying to do, have a better chance of winning!

Learn and know about the moves that will increase your odds of winning. Let’s break this down to a ridiculous but true story. I’m at the $25 black-jack table of a local casino and a person sits down next to me. This person lost $200 in a matter of 5 minutes. He couldn’t figure out why. When he got up to leave, he was mumbling something about the fix is in. I asked him what he meant. He told me, “I had pairs several times and still lost even though the dealer didn’t have any pairs.” Are you kidding me! This guy was playing at the black-jack table, but thought he was playing poker.

Golden rule … if you take the time before going to the casino to learn how, what and why your doing what your supposed to be doing with a particular game, then you too can plan on winning at your next trip to the casino or at least increase your chances of winning substantially.

You can’t win if you don’t play the game…

2008-04-20T19:06:00.001-04:00

by Staff at onlinecasinoaction.net

In today’s world of rich and poor, one thing usually separates us. The one that wins is the one that plays the game. So many of us don’t jump in because we often have a deflated attitude from the beginning. (ie that will never happen to me or I’m not that lucky). Well what if it did happen to you? What if you were that lucky? You’ll never know if you don’t play the game.

I’m not talking about gambling for money. I’m talking about playing the game and having that feeling of winning. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit, but what if it were on casino games? I’m sure you have seen the commercials … “take a chance, make it happen”, well now you can and it can be with “play” money. What am I talking about, you ask?

At Online Casino Action we have the very best online casino games. Every casino allows you to play with “no money”, meaning you can play for fun. What a great way to have that rush of winning the big jackpot without actually risking/gambling your money!

Maybe you want to win “real money”, but without risking your own funds? No problem, we have several offers that allow you to play with the casino’s money and you get to keep your winnings!

Either way, you can’t win if you don’t play the game. Get in on the action today at Online Casino Action

House defeats bill to legalize electronic bingo at tracks

2008-04-20T19:03:00.000-04:00

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama House has refused to consider a bill that would have legalized electronic bingo games at greyhound dog tracks in Mobile and Birmingham.

Tax revenue from the games would have gone to help fund the state’s cash-strapped Medicaid Agency. The House voted 55-39 to bring up the bill for debate. That’s short of the three-fifths vote needed to bring an issue to the House floor for debate.

Rep. John Knight of Montgomery later moved that the measure be considered and it failed the second time on a 57-39 vote. The sponsor, Rep. Marcel Black of Tuscumbia, said he could try again later in the session to pass the bill.

The measure was a constitutional amendment, which would also have to be approved by voters.

Caesar’s statue coming down tomorrow

2008-04-20T18:56:00.001-04:00

The huge 12-foot statue of Caesar that dominates the Caesars Indiana casino in Harrison County will be removed tomorrow morning as the riverboat takes a major step to “de-Romanize” itself.

The approximately 750-pound Caesar, easily seen from Ind. 111, has been doomed since Harrah’s Entertainment purchased Caesars Entertainment and its 26 casinos in 2005 for $9.3 billion.

Harrah’s intends to rebrand the casino as a Horseshoe facility.

The statue of Caesar is to be removed from its spot high on the casino Pavilion with a crane to a flatbed truck below.

“If the statue is successfully removed in one piece,” according to a casino news release, “it will be given to Harrison County.”

The county will store the emperor “until a location for placement is determined,” the release said.

Crown sells interest in Monarchy Enterprises

2008-04-20T18:55:00.000-04:00

Crown sold its 25.4 per cent interest in television and film production company Monarchy Enterprises Holdings for $US189.4 million ($204.4 million) to focus on its core gaming business.

The casino owner sold the stake to Monarchy’s major shareholder, Arnon Milchan, who wants to consolidate his control of the film, television and global media company, Melbourne-headquartered Crown said in a statement today.

Mr Milchan will pay for the stake over five years in broadly equal instalments, secured by a pledge over the shares which have been sold. Crown has received an initial instalment of $US33.2 million.

PBL, which owned the Crown gaming assets until they were spun off as a separate company, received distributions of about $US189.4 million from its share investment in Monarchy in 2004 and 2005.

Monarchy owns New Regency Productions, which made Mr and Mrs Smith and television series Malcolm in the Middle.

“I would like to thank Arnon Milchan for a long and profitable relationship,” Crown executive chairman James Packer said in the statement.

The royal flush is the best hand in poker, consisting of a 10, jack, queen, king, and ace all of the same suit. Probabilities of being dealt such a hand are over 600,000 to one, but online video poker enthusiast PS managed to do this twice in the space of 3 days!

Slots to cut 10 percent from Pa. property tax bills

2008-04-15T17:55:00.008-04:00

By MARC LEVY Associated Press Writer
© 2008 The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Most homeowners in Pennsylvania could get an average $169 reduction on their next school property tax bill as the state begins to distribute its take from slot-machine gambling in casinos.

The size of that reduction adds up to an average cut of 10 percent off school property taxes for eligible home and farm owners outside Philadelphia in the 2008-09 school year, state officials said Tuesday.

In Philadelphia, residents will see a 5.7 percent reduction in the city's wage tax rate in 2009, while suburbanites who work in the city will see a 5 percent drop in the wage tax rate they pay.

Slot machines were legalized in 2004 on the promise of tax cuts, and revenues helped expand a property tax and rent rebate program last year for low-income seniors. The tax cuts will be the first after much anticipation by homeowners, as well as gambling opponents and proponents.

"It took us a while to get here, but we are finally here," said Michael Masch, the budget secretary for Gov. Ed Rendell.

The number of taxpayers eligible for a reduction, and the number of people who will actually receive a reduction, was not immediately clear.

The Rendell administration said Tuesday that, based on Census estimates, there are 3.1 million home and farm owners outside Philadelphia who would be eligible.

To receive a reduction, home and farm owners outside Philadelphia must have completed and returned an application sent by the county. The number of people who did so will not be known until May, Education Department spokesman Michael Race said.

In addition, the city of Philadelphia does not have an exact figure for how many people pay the city's wage tax, although the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority estimated that it is more than 900,000, based on partial city figures.

Regardless, some will benefit more than others.

Based on a formula developed by the Legislature and the governor's office, the slots money will be weighted toward homeowners in school districts where property taxes are relatively high and incomes and property values are low.

Also, low-income elderly homeowners and suburban homeowners who work in Philadelphia will get help two different ways, making them likely to see bigger average tax bill reductions.

Pennsylvanians won't be the only ones to benefit. People who work in Philadelphia and live in New Jersey, Delaware and other states also will get the benefit of the lower city wage tax.

To date, the state has collected $905 million from slot machines to reduce taxes since the first slot machine lit up at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in November 2006.

Based on the amount of slots revenue expected by Oct. 15, the state will distribute $612 million for the tax cuts and another $48.5 million from slots revenue for the property tax and rent rebate program for low-income seniors, while keeping about $273 million in reserve.

Nearly $87 million will be set aside to cut Philadelphia's wage tax rate in 2009. The resident rate will decline to 3.93 percent from 4.169 percent and the nonresident rate will decline to 3.5 percent from 3.685 percent.

Masch said he decided to keep some extra money in reserve, beyond the $100 million that is mandated, to ensure that the size of the next year's tax cuts are at least the same as this year's. After that, more slot-machine casinos are expected to open, boosting revenues until they are expected to provide $1 billion in tax cuts in 2012, Masch said.

Seven slots casinos are now operating in Pennsylvania. Four more slots casinos, including two in Philadelphia, are licensed but have yet to open, while state gambling regulators have not issued three licenses, including two resort licenses that allow a relatively small number of slot machines on site.

MGM Mirage Fires 400 Managers

By Ryan Nakashima, AP Business Writer
MGM Mirage Fires More Than 400 Middle Managers, Expects $75 Million in Annual Savings

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- MGM Mirage Inc., the largest casino operator on the Las Vegas Strip, told more than 400 middle management employees Monday they would be terminated immediately in a cost-saving move, the company said.
The decision will save $75 million annually and came after the company saw weakness since August at its properties, which include Bellagio, MGM Grand, Mirage and Mandalay Bay, spokesman Alan Feldman told The Associated Press.

The move is the largest and swiftest by a casino operator in the current economic downturn, although the use of so-called "extra board" employees who take fill-in shifts as needed has been down citywide.

"We were able to see the signs of trouble on the economic horizon last August," Feldman said. "The economy was beginning to worsen and clearly was not going to get better in the immediate term."

Mass. lawmaker pitches online gambling bill

2008-04-14T21:37:00.003-04:00

U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., the chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, is proposing legislation that would bar the government from requiring U.S. financial institutions to block Internet gambling transactions. Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in 2006, making it a crime for banks or other institutions to process financial transactions, such as electronic fund transfers, that are used to place bets online. The Treasury and the Federal Reserve are considering final language to implement the law. Many financial institutions and gambling operators have complained that the proposal would force banks and credit card processors to police online wagering. Those critics say the law doesn’t make a distinction between legal and illegal online wagering. “These regulations are impossible to implement without placing a significant burden on the payments system and financial institutions…” Frank said in a statement.

How do you decide who pays for lunch?

2008-04-14T07:58:00.000-04:00

Seoul - Two farmers fined for gambling after playing cards to settle a lunch bill have won their appeal to South Korea's highest court, a report said on Monday.

Hankyoreh newspaper said the Supreme Court overruled a lower court decision to fine the farmers about $500 (about R4 000) each for playing poker to determine who should pay for lunch.

"What is equivalent to a one-off entertainment... is a trivial act, not harmful to sound work ethics and social customs," it quoted Sunday's ruling as saying.

The men were caught by police in the southern town of Cheongdo last year. A district court had fined them 500 000 won (about R4 000).

South Koreans can legally gamble on card games only at one casino in the country.

Responsible gambling benefits everyone

Gambling is a major employer in Canada and in Sault Ste. Marie, a study released by the Canadian Gaming Association says.

The question on many minds is whether that's a good thing.

Locally, the economic impact is obvious and positive, in our opinion.

In Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Lottery and Gaming data show that as of July 2007, 909 people were employed in the gaming industry locally: 566 at corporate headquarters on Foster Drive and 343 at Casino Sault Ste. Marie. That's an annual payroll of $48 million, said OLG spokesperson Don Pister.

"Gaming has grown significantly over the past decade to become an essential pillar of the entertainment industry in Canada," Bill Rutsey, president and CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association, told reporter Elaine Della-Mattia recently.

Gambling can be a devastating addiction, but so can alcohol, so can tobacco.

You can take the examples a step further and say automobiles spew toxins into the air, which are destroying the planet, or kitchen knives can be used violently.

People can choose to drink, smoke or drive a car. The gambling issue is not black and white and the gaming industry has been trying to promote responsible gambling. We believe there is such a thing and it's in our interest to promote it.

A thriving casino is a perfect fit for a community that is striving to become a tourist destination. Going for a hike or a fishing trip during the day, having dinner and unwinding at the casino sounds like an enjoyable day by most people's standards.
