After months of trying to figure out how in the hell the Ebay Partner Network REALLY calculates my Earnings Per Click, I’ve decided I’ve had enough!!!  Just this month alone, I had a site that was bot attacked and, instead of filtering the clicks on their end, they decided to NOT PAY me for legitimate clicks I’ve received until they feel the account is square.  In a word…filtering crap clicks is NOT MY JOB.  It’s theirs.  It wouldn’t be so bad if it were just a matter of not honoring clicks from one site but their method penalizes EVERY SITE I have with them which is, pardon the expression, utter bullshit.

Details To Follow

In a post I will write this week, I will detail exactly how I am going to get every site I can off of that network and onto sites that make more money for me.  I’ll give you the straight dope of which networks I’ll use and what I’m going to do for new sites as well as fixing old ones.

As I mentioned in my last post, I wanted to talk about the business goals I’ve set for 2010 a little.  Before I do that, I think I should talk a little about how I go about setting goals.  As you’ll see, I believe in the Keep It Simple Stupid mantra.

I believe that all human beings have things they want out of life.  I also believe the reason many fail to get these things is because they’re not clear about exactly what it is they want in the first place.  To make a statement like “I want to have more money in 2010″ does not give your mind enough stimulus because it’s too vague.  For this reason, I agree with the experts that tell you to make your goals specific, write them down and review them at least weekly.

My Personal Approach

For myself, I make two lists of these goals.  One is for business and the other is for personal.  This helps me in at least two ways.  Firstly, it allows me to be more focused on these separate areas of my life.  Secondly, it helps me find a way to make these lists coexist peacefully.  For instance, can you really make a business goal of traveling to more conferences if one of your personal goals is to spend more time at home with your family?  Maybe you could but that’s the reason I advise carefully formulating your goals.  To see if there is a meeting point where both goals can be achieved or to alter the goal that can’t be.

That last point bears repeating.  If you find while reviewing your goals you consistently find goals that you are not taking action on you need to ask yourself why and be honest.  Is it not something you really want or is it just too soon for you to consider it?  Either way, you might want to look at either dropping it from your current goals or replacing it with another one that does inspire you.

As I mentioned in my last post, 2010 will be a year I really strive to help my readers benefit from my experience and avoid my mistakes.  I will be making changes to how I do business and telling you about it.  I will be reviewing products that I use and give you an honest accounting of their strengths and weaknesses.  If I don’t like it, I will tell you why.  Likewise, if I’m blown away by something.  I will be doing more posts where I simply talk about decisions I’ve made and why.

Learning By Sharing

My sincere hope is that all of this will spark much more discussion and sharing amongst my readers.  There is plenty of money to be made online and we can all help each other to get our share of it.  I don’t expect anybody to give up URLs and keywords they rank for but there is a lot of space between that and helping by sharing your knowledge with others.

In short, if we stop seeing everybody else online as a cut-throat competitor and more like fellow students, we can ALL benefit from it.

I apologize for my poor showing in 2009 in respect to teaching and sharing with you.  The main point I want to make here is that I started this blog because I want to help other bloggers and internet marketers NOT make the same mistakes I have.  I really want to help you succeed online.

The other change I want to make is to give you an update in each post of what’s next on the blog when I know it.  This month is no exception.

During the month of January I will feature:

1.  My 2010 business goals with a discussion of what’s changed from 2009 and why.

2.  An update on my N1Way including traffic and earnings where possible.

There will be other posts written about ideas I’ve gathered from other bloggers and internet marketers that I believe you need to hear about.  In short, sharing knowledge from successful people who are happy to help others succeed.

Three Sites Under My Belt

As you may suspect, the first site was the toughest because I was literally consulting the N1Way site for every aspect of it.  I wanted to make sure that I understood and employed the principles they taught.  What I didn’t want to do was only use the new stuff and default back to my own system to fill in the gaps and speed it up.  I have sites built with pieces of different systems and most of those are not going to be renewed in 2010.

My first site took me over one month from research to submitting to the search engines.  The second a couple of weeks and the last one just over a week.  I’m getting this stuff down and it IS getting easier.

Bottom Line

The first two sites are already getting more visitors and generating more clicks through to ebay than several of my old sites combined.  This makes me feel good and like I’m on the right track.  They’re not making huge amounts of money by any means but I see how the N1Way system will work once I’ve got at least ten of these behind me.

Ok, I admit it.  In the 2 plus years I’ve been working in affiliate marketing I’ve been learning my craft in parts.  I know I’m not alone.  I hear from affiliate marketers all the time that they need an all in one resource for researching, building and monetizing websites.  Like me, they learned a little about keyword research from this source, a little about site building from that source and building an affiliate business from yet another.  The problem is the parts don’t always fit together.  This is the key source of frustration of many affiliate marketers.

N1Way Put It All Together

Like I mentioned in my last post, the N1Way puts it all together in one place.  Finally, there is a step by step resource for affiliate marketers to learn to build valuable product information sites while creating web properties that generate regular income and building asset value.  I can’t tell you how relieved I was to find a very affordable ($24.95 period-not monthly) place I could log in and begin building a significant online presence.  Not a get rich quick, make the front page of google for all your keywords in 48 hours program.  Just a steady, learned way to build your online portfolio of performing sites one site at a time.

N1Way Is Not Just For New Sites

During the course of building my first two sites it dawned on me.  I could now see exactly why some of my earlier sites were either not getting a lot of traffic or conversions.  They simply weren’t focused on topics, brands or products that people were looking for that I had a snowball’s chance in hell of ranking for.  This was probably the second greatest revelation I made from the N1Way site.  I could use many of these principles for revamping some of these lackluster sites.  Not all of them, mind you.  A few were poorly researched attempts just to get a site up for the practice of doing so.  For these, there is probably no help.  However, I can still use the N1Way system to evaluate their potential to see if they can be helped.  I like that idea a lot more than simply not renewing a domain because I think it’s no good without any hard data other than site income to back me up.

Not Something That Has To Take A Lot Of Time

Before I close, I’ll just say the focus of N1Way is to create NEW websites that build into a solid performing, steady source of income.  Doing as much as is necessary without doing more than is needed is the mantra there.  I just wanted to make sure you considered that it can also be used to evaluate and improve your current sites as well.

Take a look at your online portfolio and what do you see?  If you’re like most people trying to make a living online, you’ll see a quality continuum that dates back from your first efforts to the present.  Hopefully, it’s a linear progression but often it’s not.  What I mean is that all of us have been constantly bombarded since we’ve gotten into this business with every money making scheme known to man.  Consequently, we’re more likely to have sites that reflect more what was the hot thing at the time it was built than a steady improvement from one site to the next.

It’s Not Your Fault

I honestly believe that anybody who is serious about making a living online figured out a long time ago that it does NOT happen overnight.  Nor does it happen without any serious effort on your part.  I’m going to assume for the rest of this article that these are known facts.

The reason I say it’s not your fault is because so much money has been made by online gurus who claim to know the “one thing” that makes the difference between riches and poverty.  The truth is that making money online requires hard work, consistent action and, most importantly, a step by step plan.  The latter being the toughest to get your hands on.  I know because I’ve fallen into this same trap.  I’ve learned most of my internet marketing lessons in what I call “pieces parts” education.  A little about site building, a little about optimizing,  a little about keyword research and link building.  But none of it fitted together into a plan.

The Number One Way To Make Money Online

A few weeks back, Kelvin of the Build A Niche Store site published just such a plan.  It’s called “The Number One Way To Make Money Online” and it consists of 9 onlines modules and 118 pages that guide you from an idea right on through to managing your business.

I now have the vision to look back and see why so many of my earlier sites failed-they weren’t built right-PERIOD!

This got me thinking about the post I made last year about this and that I can still improve on each of the lessons I wrote about back then.

Have A Plan But Play Each Point

I’ve gotten better about mapping out my daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals but I still find myself worrying about the big picture rather than doing the task at hand. Whether this is fretting over the right keywords to use for a post or checking my link building success, I still need to concentrate more on simply completing the task I’m working on and trusting that it will start to come together eventually.

Luckily, I’ve had the help of Mark Hansen of TheNicheStoreBuilder.com who will tell me when I’m wasting time worrying about nonsense instead of just doing the work. Thanks, Mark!

Test Even If It’s Worked Before

This is an area I actually need to cut back on. I second guess myself way too much and I need to remember that testing is best done AFTER you’ve had some success with a method. In other words, refine a method rather than jump all over the place trying different methods.

I have a feeling I’m far from alone in this area. I think when internet marketers lack at least one huge success they tend to think that everything they’re doing is at fault. This causes the type of method jumping I referred to earlier.

If It’s Not Working, Try Something Else

Hand in hand with the above. I’m currently TOO willing to try something else. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean we should stick with one thing until we’re bankrupt. But we should try to refine a method before completely abandoning it. The difference between taking what we’ve learned to sharpen our focus as opposed to using any failure as an excuse to abandon a technique.

Take Risks

I’ve made great strides in this area but have a long way to go.

Just as there are different sized risks, each person has their own risk tolerance. Find yours and make sure that you stay in the habit of taking risks you are comfortable with. Once you start having success with these smaller risks, you can build up your risk tolerance and start taking larger risks. In time you’ll even be able to step outside your comfort zone. Remember to reward yourself for any and all risks you take.

Don’t Let One Failure Linger

Just as I reported last year at this time in my post “Six Lessons To Learn From Roger Federer“, Roger suffered a devastating loss at the hands of Rafael Nadal in the 2008 Wimbledon final. Did he feel bad? Hell, yes! Did he quit tennis? Hell, no! In fact, he turned around and beat Andy Murray at the 2008 US Open.

This is an area I need quite a lot of work in. I let failures get into my soul and hang around in there too long. If Roger showed me one thing in the Wimbledon final it was that what happened last year or last minute does not have any power over you unless you give it power over you. My inspiration is that I know I’ll have massive success even if I master ONLY this lesson.

Remember That You Are Human

Failure is human. But you know what? So is success! Being able to step back and admit you are fallible is an important first step. Keeping this lesson in mind will help your development in all of the other areas as well.
