I found an excellent post on the SitePoint blog dealing with how to keep your business moving forward.  As you can imagine, it deals a lot with ways to not getting stuck in the “same ol’, same ol’” mode and finding ways to celebrate your victories while challenging yourself to move forward.

Shake Up Your Goals

Instead of making your work-life one similar project after another, they suggest you take some time to purposely do something you’ve never done before because it can be extremely motivating. Plus, that motivation can continue into your everyday activities.

Take Care Of Yourself

We all hear this all the time but we rarely heed its message.  You should schedule time off and away just like you do your working days.  Make sure to drop in an occasional surprise holiday when things just seem too much.  It will help clear your mind and re-energize your attitude to return to work.

Look At Your Brag Wall

You should keep and update a list of your accomplishments so that you can review them often.  Nothing helps your frame of mind more than reminding yourself what you truly are capable of.

Boost Your Adrenaline

Not a huge latte’.  Do something either physical or mental that charges you up and then schedule some work time and see if you can’t get a whole lot more done during that time.

A Change Of Scenery

It’s amazing to me how set in our ways we can become.  And that extends to how much we get done and our level of creativity.  One of the best ways to change your results is to change your workspace.  I don’t mean shuffling papers around.  Literally, try doing your work from another room, outside or a different country if the opportunity is there.  It’s no secret that we don’t feel like the same human out of our comfort zone and this can be very good for our business.

How To Build Momentum In Your Business

I found this short article to be a great recharge read and their tips were spot on for helping you to evaluate your current momentum and for making alterations that can get you on a new track or get you back on your successful one.

If your area of business is affiliate marketing, I would highly recommend picking up Rosalind Gardner’s “The Super Affiliate Handbook” for helping you make changes in your business that save you time and make sure you’re working on the important stuff.

I would also recommend that you check out this year’s “The Challenge” with Ed Dale and his team.  Free video-based internet marketing training that can literally make the difference between spinning your wheels and starting to make money.

I’ve heard from various sources the best way to ramp up your affiliate marketing business is to use the keyword phrases section of your Awsats tool inside your hosting Cpanel application.  I’ve heard the quickest way to get good post content up is to take the phrases people are using to find you and simply write content based on these keywords.

Sounds pretty simple right?

Now, I admit at times to overanalyzing things until I smack myseldf in the head and realize what else I could be doing that might be more productive and lucrative.  However, I also believe that as long as you don’t go all the way to “analysis paralysis” with this you should still take at least one or two more steps before writing that content.  Let me explain.

Do You Want To Rank For Those Keywords?

Obviously, if people are using nonsense terms that somehow get them to your site you want to throw those out as even possibles.  Beyond that, looking at the top five results in Awstats you want to look at them a little closer.  Are all five of those keyword phrases relevant to your blog or site’s main purpose defined by your main keyword phrases?

If so, take a quick look at the google keyword tool and see how many searches each of them gets.  Be sure to check both broad and exact to be sure that phrase really does have traffic.

Can You Improve Your Ranking For Them?

If they do have reasonable traffic I would next check to see where you rank for them now and what the SEO competition is like.  Market Samurai has great tools to do both of these things quickly and you can download a trial copy now for free.  You may find that you rank somewhere on the first page for a term but that the competition is so stiff you won’t be able to move up at all with one post or even twenty.

Do this for each of the terms.  Once you’ve identified at least three of these terms that targets a problem your niche is interested in, has sufficient traffic to warrant a post and that you have a good chance of ranking for write them down.  If you use WordPress, I would recommend making drafts using the keywords in the title so you remember them for your research phase.

When I started out, none of this stuff made any sense to me.  One one hand, people were claiming to make huge amounts of money in internet marketing.  On the other, the steps it seemed to take were numerous and illusory.  Every guru out there had their angle on how to do it and they rarely agreed with each other.  That is, unless they were promoting each other.  That seemed to be the ONLY time any of the information seemed to come from the same mouth.

Obviously, it was very confusing for a newbie to sort through and my results reflected this.  Consequently, I started building sites based on different approaches and theories of making money without fully developing any of them.  To my defense, when I started a few years back the method was everything.  What I mean is gurus weren’t that concerned that you covered your SEO, content, social and backlinking bases unless it was part of their method.

The Results

A bunch of crappy sites that generated little or no income even if they did provide useful information for members of the niche.  I used the first part of this year to get rid of most of them and have developed those that I could see still had potential.  I couldn’t believe how lacking some of these sites had been.

The Number One Mistake

Just so I’m totally clear here, if I had learned, practiced and perfected any ONE method before moving on to another, I would have at least known if the method had merit before trying another.  Instead, I had a bunch of stuff that didn’t work with no clear idea of what would.

Don’t make that mistake even if you’re a seasoned pro.  You can’t test a money making system if you drop it half-way to try another.  Finish what you start and THEN decide if it works.  Don’t be in a hurry.  If the method is good, you’ll be rewarded with both an income generating site AND a method you can reuse and refine for future web sites.

My Number One Recommendation

Regardless of your level of experience, take some time to revisit the basics and see how your current work habits are serving or hurting you.  I recommend checking out Ed Dale’s The Challenge site and starting again from square one.  I’ve followed his course before and it’s quality stuff for any level and it’s free.  I’ll tell more about it in my next post but don’t wait for that to sign up.

It really is that important!

How Do You Make Money From Your List?

OK.  You’ve set out your goals over 3 months ago.  Hopefully, you’ve been reviewing them at least weekly.  I also hope you’ve rewarded yourself for those you’ve accomplished to date.

My question is: how is it going?  Have you found yourself week in, week out staring at the same list?  Does it seem like you’re never going to achieve them?  Have you taken any time to stop and ask yourself why you’re not achieving them?

I’ve found myself in this situation this year.  I took great pains to look at what I wanted to do with my personal and business lives and constructed a set of goals for each that fulfill meaningful purposes in each area as well as mesh together nicely with each other.  After all, you’re not a son, father, mother,wife,husband, friend etc. on an island.  You’re a human being that has goals for at least your personal and business lives.  You’ve got to find a way to make these aspects of your life coexist meaningfully.

So, why do I find these goals that still have no progress towards them?  My simple answer is: you’ve made way too many of them at once.

Did I Hear You Correctly?

Yes, you did.  No matter how careful we try to be to envision our years at the beginning of them, it’s too easy to load ourselves down with so much stuff we don’t know where to start.  We may pick a starting point but we’re never sure it’s really the most important area for us to begin with.  Let me suggest the following goal audit.

Lighten Your Load

Go back to your list of goals and start with those areas you haven’t even begun to tackle yet.  Ask yourself if you really think you’re going to accomplish that this year.  If you do, then keep it on your list.  If you have any doubts, strike it from this year and keep it in a file for next year’s goals.  You can always look at them again when you begin next year’s goal setting.

Isn’t That A Bit Arbitrary?

Not at all.  The one thing none of us can make any more of is time.  I’m just trying to keep you from wasting time either reviewing a huge list of goals you’re not going to accomplish or by trying to decide what to do about goals you haven’t accomplished yet.  I firmly believe that 3 months time is more than enough for you to decide on a course of action as far as goals are concerned.

So, go back to your goals and see if you can’t eliminate some obvious stumbling blocks.  It will help your attitude  because you won’t feel like you’re kicking yourself for not starting a goal and the leaner list will allow you to focus better on what’s REALLY important to you.

This plugin will allow me to put comparison listings from different networks right on each review page so the visitors have a chance to check out the deals offered by multiple merchants. This is going to be a win-win for me.

First of all, I’ll be able to eliminate the campaigns that aren’t stellar from the EPN network and stop the assault on my overall earnings that these are causing.

Secondly, I’ll get commissions I really deserve on my higher end sites rather than being stuck in the muck and mire of the EPN quality click pricing debacle.  For instance, I sold an almost $1700.00 item yesterday on EPN and my EPC barely budged.  On Amazon, even at the lowest commission level, I would have made almost $70.00 from that one transaction.

Get DropBox

Go get the Dropbox application for PC, Mac, Linux and iPhone and install it on the hardware you want to share.  You’ll need to create an account and you get 2 GB of storage for free.  Make sure you set Dropbox to start up when the computer starts or this could become messy.

Find Your Market Samurai Files

Regardless of which platform you’re using Market Samurai on, the easiest way to find the location of your files is to select “open project” from the menu and you’ll see where Market Samurai has been storing these files.

Create A Market Samurai Folder In Your Dropbox Desktop Folder

It might not hurt to delete some of the ones that install by default that you won’t be using just to make it easier to find.

Copy Your Market Samurai Files Into This Folder

Make sure to use the “Open” button initially rather than selecting a file name from the listings on the front screen of Market Samurai to force it to use the files from inside your DropBox  folder rather than the originals from their old location.  This well help them save to this new location as well.

Also, don’t forget to delete any files you know you are no longer using or never used.  Again, this helps reduce file clutter and makes it easier for you to find the stuff you DO use.

Repeat This Process On All Machines

If you are prompted that a file you’re trying to save already exists in the Dropbox folder, I just check to make sure which one is larger and keep that one.  That’s the easiest way for me.

I mention the above because the main thing that prompted this project is I would research the same things on different computers and then I’d have duplicated work on more than one machine.  Plus, I wouldn’t know which one was more developed.   I would find myself wasting time just because I was on another machine and didn’t want to bother going back to the other file.

Once you’ve consolidated all of your Market Samurai files on Dropbox, it’s your call if you want to save the originals in their original location.  I deleted mine because any active files will be worthless in a matter of minutes if I’m updating them on another machine.  Being able to go back to a file that’s days or weeks old is not much more help than starting from scratch in my opinion.

Save Time And Frustration

If you follow the above instructions you should always have access to the most recent research you’ve done with that incredible marketing tool, Market Samurai.  That way, whenever you get the idea to work on a site, you have everything you need to hit the ground running.

One Final Word Of Caution

It is imperative that you set Dropbox to start when the computer starts or you’ll find yourself working on an old file or you’ll update a file and it won’t upload so it can change the files on the other computers.  That’s not even to mention that it might cause a renamed file to be uploaded to the other machines.  So, please, make sure Dropbox starts when the computer starts.

After months of trying to figure out how in the hell the Ebay Partner Network REALLY calculates my Earnings Per Click, I’ve decided I’ve had enough!!!  Just this month alone, I had a site that was bot attacked and, instead of filtering the clicks on their end, they decided to NOT PAY me for legitimate clicks I’ve received until they feel the account is square.  In a word…filtering crap clicks is NOT MY JOB.  It’s theirs.  It wouldn’t be so bad if it were just a matter of not honoring clicks from one site but their method penalizes EVERY SITE I have with them which is, pardon the expression, utter bullshit.

In a post I will write this week, I will detail exactly how I am going to get every site I can off of that network and onto sites that make more money for me.  I’ll give you the straight dope of which networks I’ll use and what I’m going to do for new sites as well as fixing old ones.

As I mentioned in my last post, I wanted to talk about the business goals I’ve set for 2010 a little.  Before I do that, I think I should talk a little about how I go about setting goals.  As you’ll see, I believe in the Keep It Simple Stupid mantra.

I believe that all human beings have things they want out of life.  I also believe the reason many fail to get these things is because they’re not clear about exactly what it is they want in the first place.  To make a statement like “I want to have more money in 2010″ does not give your mind enough stimulus because it’s too vague.  For this reason, I agree with the experts that tell you to make your goals specific, write them down and review them at least weekly.

My Personal Approach

For myself, I make two lists of these goals.  One is for business and the other is for personal.  This helps me in at least two ways.  Firstly, it allows me to be more focused on these separate areas of my life.  Secondly, it helps me find a way to make these lists coexist peacefully.  For instance, can you really make a business goal of traveling to more conferences if one of your personal goals is to spend more time at home with your family?  Maybe you could but that’s the reason I advise carefully formulating your goals.  To see if there is a meeting point where both goals can be achieved or to alter the goal that can’t be.

That last point bears repeating.  If you find while reviewing your goals you consistently find goals that you are not taking action on you need to ask yourself why and be honest.  Is it not something you really want or is it just too soon for you to consider it?  Either way, you might want to look at either dropping it from your current goals or replacing it with another one that does inspire you.
