Tiger Woods on track for 15th major, says close friend Notah Begay

Tiger Woods may have to battle a bit harder for his next major victory but a 15th title is "not out of the realms of possibility," according to one of his best friends Notah Begay.

Monday, November 12th 2018, 5:00 AM EST

Tiger Woods may have to battle a bit harder for his next major victory but a 15th title is "not out of the realms of possibility," according to one of his best friends Notah Begay.

The former world No. 1 ended the 2018 season on a high with victory in the Tour Championship at East Lake for his first win in five years after overcoming four back surgeries.

Woods, who will turn 43 on December 26, took his tally of PGA Tour wins to 80, two behind the all-time record of Sam Snead, but it is Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major titles that he has long coveted.

Many thought his multiple back injuries had put paid to that, but Begay, Woods' college roommate at Stanford, says the pursuit of Nicklaus is back on the agenda.

"I think now the first win is out of the way he is focused on getting off 14 [major wins] and on to 15," four-time PGA Tour winner Begay told CNN Sport.

"I do not think that's out of the realm of possibility."

Woods underwent spine fusion surgery in April 2017, paving the way for a remarkable comeback this season in which he briefly led the Open with nine holes to play before finishing sixth and came second at August's US PGA.

He scored three other top-five finishes, and led September's season-ending Tour Championship from start to finish..

Woods famously won all 14 of his major titles when leading after 54 holes but Begay says he will have to get better at coming out of the pack on the final day if he wants to add to his total.

"I don't think he has as much firepower as he used to have and can go out there and dominate like we saw him in so many of his other major championships," said Begay, the only full-blood native American on the Tour.

"I think it's going to be a little tighter and in some cases he may have to come from behind after 54 holes which he hasn't really been very good at in his career."

'Big impact'

Begay is one of the few people in Woods' inner circle, and he admits he feared his friend's career was over.

"I was sat in his living room right after the first surgery [in March 2014] and he was moving around like an 85-year-old man," he says. "I literally thought the career of the greatest golfer I'd ever known and one of my dearest friends in the world was coming to an end."

Woods has been open about the "dark times" he faced, which is why his comeback has been so remarkable, says Begay, who now works as an analyst for Golf Channel.

"We were about two weeks removed from that victory at East Lake and I got a text from Tiger one morning and it was simply like, 'I can't believe I won my 80th golf tournament," he added.

"It still hasn't settled with him, so that's how big an impact it made on him personally and the ripple effect it's having on our game is extreme -- the economic benefits, the TV ratings, the interest in the game."

The footage of vast crowds stampeding after Woods as he wrapped up his East Lake win were a throwback to his heyday in the early 2000s. TV ratings were up 206% on last year and the coverage yielded the highest rating for a non-major all year, third only to the Masters and the PGA Championship in which he chased home Brooks Koepka.

"Half the people watch because they're waiting for a train wreck or want to see him fail, and the other half want to be inspired and relive those historic wins that he had in '97 at the Masters or 2000 at Pebble Beach in the US Open," added Begay.

"Those are nostalgic-type victories that make people that are at different points in their lives remember just how fun sports and golf and Tiger Woods made watching golf."

Since his last major victory at the 2008 US Open, Woods has gone through scandal in his private life, divorce, injuries and an issue with his medications for back pain which led to a driving-under-the-influence charge in May 2018.

His back story makes him even more compelling, says Begay.

"All of the distractions and challenges Tiger has had off the golf course not only brought in more people to take an interest in whether or not he's going to make the cut or make the putt or win the tournament and you see it in the TV ratings," he says.

"There's not a single player, not even close, that can drive ratings like Tiger Woods. He doesn't have to win, he just has to tee it up."

World Number One Rory McIlroy from Northern
Ireland will grace the fairways of the Barclays Singapore Open this year
along with Australia’s Adam Scott, a three-time winner of the event,
and American star Phil Mickelson.
The three golfing powerhouses,
along with a wealth of other marquee names , will compete in the US$6
million event at Sentosa Golf Club, in Singapore, from November 8-11.
Their
sights will be set on the US$1 million winners’ cheque in a tournament
which joined The European Tour International Schedule in 2009.
Reigning
US PGA Champion McIlroy will arrive in the Lion’s City on the crest of a
wave, having emphatically cemented his position as the world’s leading
golfer by winning the BMW Championship for his third victory in four
outings on the US PGA Tour.
The 23 year old won both the 2011 US
Open Championship and this year’s US PGA Championship titles by a
staggering eight shots, and his explosive driving and deft touch will no
doubt be in full effect at the Barclays Singapore Open – which will
again be co-sanctioned by The European and Asian Tours.
McIlroy first played in the tournament in 2008, a year after turning professional, finishing joint fourth.
Scott
has made Singapore’s national Open his own, having won the tournament a
record three times in 2005, 2006 and 2010. He also finished third in
2007, and in a tie for third in 2009.
The World Number Six came
agonisingly close to winning his first Major this year when he led The
Open Championship by four shots with four holes to play, but lost by a
single stroke to South African Ernie Els.
Four-time Major winner
Mickelson has competed in the last five Barclays Singapore Opens, with
his best finish coming in 2008, when he finished in ninth place.
With
three Masters Tournament titles to his name, plus one US PGA
Championship, he will be eager to conquer Sentosa’s famous Serapong
Course.
“I am delighted that the 2012 Barclays Singapore Open
will once again welcome the world’s best golfers. Rory McIlroy, Adam
Scott and Phil Mickelson are some of the most sought after players in
the game, and their presence will further enhance one of the world’s
premier tournaments,” said Quek Suan Kiat, Country Manager and Chief
Operating Officer of Barclays Bank PLC, Singapore.
A total of 156
players will complete, with 63 from European Tour and a further 63 from
the Asian Tour. There will also be 10 sponsors’ invitations, whilst
three spots will go to amateurs nominated by the Singapore Golf
Association, and a further three places made available to professionals
selected by the Singapore Professional Golf Association who are not
otherwise exempt.
A qualifying tournament will be held on Sunday
November 4 on the Serapong Course, where the top three finishers will
progress to the main event.
“This year marks the 49th
staging of the Singapore Open, and thanks to Barclays and Sentosa
everything is once again in place for Asia’s showpiece golfing event.
The Singapore Golf Association are the guardians of our national Open,
and we are proud that it now ranks as one of the world’s premier
events,” said Bob Tan, President, Singapore Golf Association.
“The
Barclays Singapore Open continues to set new standards for golf in the
region, which is something that it has always done since its
inauguration. With a list of past champions that dates back to 1961, the
Singapore Open has earned its place in the history books as a
tournament that helped build the foundations for the development of
tournament golf in Asia,” added Tan.
For the past two seasons,
Sentosa’s Serapong and Tanjong Courses have hosted the event, but this
year only the former will be used.
“This is the eighth year
the Singapore Open is being held at Sentosa Golf Club and we are
excited to continue attracting some of the world’s greatest golfers to
The Serapong course”, said Low Teo Ping, President of Sentosa Golf club.
“ The team is priming the character of the rough, the shape of the
fairways and raising the mowing height to challenge their golfing skills
and talent.”
Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño triumphed in the
Barclays Singapore Open last year after he pipped Filipino Juvic
Pagunsan to the title by draining a ten foot birdie putt on the second
play-off hole on Monday.
The duo ended the weather-shortened
tournament tied on 14 under par 199 after the third and final round on
Sunday, but thunderstorms thwarted attempts to finish the play-off.
When
play finally resumed early on Monday morning, it was the 31 year old
Spaniard who got the better of the man from the Philippines on the
second play-off hole.

The
Best Drill To Get The Most Speed...At Impact!

You
want to swing the fastest right at impact....right? You don't want to
swing fastest at the top of your backswing or at the end of your follow-through.

Nope,
when you impact the ball you want your golf club swinging at max speed.

But
how on earth can you learn to do that?

Well,
today you're in for a treat because I have for you the best drill to
teach you how to do exactly that.

Now
interestingly this drill doesn't involve swinging a golf club, but instead
you will be swinging a rope. And doing this will give you get instant
feedback as to whether the power in your golf swing is NOT at impact.
For example, if you have a lot of power at the end of your swing you'll
get hurt - and that will be great!

Why
          would getting hurt be great?

Because
us human beings learn quickly to avoid pain. So when you do this drill
you'll quickly learn how to apply the most power to the impact zone.
This will result in much longer golf shots.

Sound
          good?

OK, to
do this drill you'll need to get
a 3 and 1/2 foot rope. And you'll need a pretty thick rope (roughly
an inch or so thick would be good), thin rope won't work for this. You'll
          also need some duct tape.

Once
you have your rope then put some duct tape around one end of the rope
where you're going to be holding the rope like a golf club (enough that
your hands will be holding duct tape not rope) and then a smaller amount
          down the other end.

After
your rope is ready then setup to an imaginary ball with your rope, holding
it at the end where you have the most duct tape. From your setup position
make your normal backswing move with your body. But here's a tip - you
should start your backswing with the big muscles of your back and shoulders
to get the rope moving away smoothly.

Once
you get into your final backswing position then STOP so the rope
is resting on your back. Then
from this top of the swing position you then need to start your downswing.

To
          do this you must:

Start your downswing by moving your weight from your right foot to your
          left foot. At
the same time move your hips laterally to the left and turn them as
          fast as you can.

This
should all happen very quickly however so you won't be able to easily
distinguish the difference between your weight being transferred and
          your hips moving and turning.

If you don't start the downswing correctly with a weight shift and a
lateral shift and turn of the hips you will get hurt doing this rope
          drill.

The
rope will come through very fast at the finish of your swing and hit
you - and that will hurt.

But
like I said at the beginning of this article, pain is great feedback
and you'll probably only do it once!

To
help you so this probably won't happen make sure you don't do anything
with your hands after they've reached the top of the backswing position.
Your hands are simply pulled through the downswing by your powerful
          lower body.

Also
do nothing with your shoulders and arms. Because like the hands they
are moved as a result of your lower body movements. There should be
no conscious thoughts as to how to move them in the downswing, or follow-through
          for that matter.

And
when you do this drill correctly the rope will lightly tap you at the
end of your swing. It won't hurt you at all.

Why?

Because with the correct transition from the backswing to your downswing
the majority of the power in your swing is generated at the bottom of
your swing -- which is just where it should be.

At
the end of your swing the rope should be moving very slowly as it should
have very little power. That's why this is such a great drill because
you learn to use your body to get the club moving the fastest just where
          it needs to....through impact.

How
          To Add Extra Power
To Your Golf Swing

There's
one place in your golf swing that you can improve to add extra distance
to your shots. And that place is the transition.

What
          is the transition?

It's
simply the moment of time in your golf swing when your swing is moving
from the backswing to the downswing.

And
it's called the transition because there should not be a stop to your
backswing and a start to your downswing. You transition between the
two. And in fact, the transition is the START of you finding
amazing power in your golf swing that you never thought existed or was
          even possible!

This
amazing power will come with much greater accuracy too when you master
          the transition.

If
I had to name one place in the golf swing (apart from impact) that
separates the great ball strikers from the average ones it's the quality
          of the transition.

So
if you want to become a great ball striker this is one aspect of your
golf swing that you're going to have to really spend some time practicing.

But
the pay off for doing this is huge i.e.... Longer and More Accurate
          Golf Shots!

Now
like everything where only a small percentage are successful, the great
ball strikers have spent a lot of practice time perfecting their transition
from backswing to downswing. And to be completely honest with you, the
transition is the hardest move in the golf swing to perfect. The reason
          for this is obvious.

During
your swing, for a brief second your upper body should be completing
the backswing while your lower body is starting to move towards the
          target.

So
to complete the transition successfully you should have two main segments
of your body (upper and lower) going in different directions. I know
that sounds hard....and that's because it is!

But
          it's doable.

And
when you "get it" you're going to get so much more enjoyment from this
game due to the extra distance and accuracy you'll gain...you're going
          to love it!

Now
if you've ever taken part in any other sport that requires kicking (e.g.
soccer), throwing (e.g. baseball), hitting (e.g. tennis) you would've
experienced the transition move that is needed in the golf swing. And
one move that almost every one can relate a transition to is the action
          of throwing a ball.

So
if you wanted to throw a golf ball as far as you possibly could down
          the fairway would you?:

a)
shift your weight to your back foot as you're taking the ball back and
then shift the weight to your front foot to throw the ball, or

b)
keep your weight evenly distributed the entire time you're throwing
          the ball.

I
hope you picked "A" because that's what any athlete would do to throw
a ball as far and fast as possible. Just take a look at a baseball pitcher
          for example.

When
they pitch they move their weight to the back foot. And they do this
so much so that when they're taking the ball back they lift their front
foot up. Then to change directions they shift their weight aggressively
to their front foot and keep moving all of their weight so that at the
end of the pitch basically all of their weight is on their front foot.
That's an example of a powerful transition and one that you'd do well
to model in your golf swing and here's a great way to feel this move.

Get
out your driver and setup as normal (but without a golf ball). Then
swing to the top of your backswing and stop. While you're stopped bring
your front foot back so it's together with your back foot. Then to start
the downswing simply move your front foot back to the position where
it was at address and swing down and follow-through.

By
doing that you'll quickly learn how the transition into the downswing
should start with your lower body.

But
once you have that drill down the next thing you should do is take out
          the stop of your backswing.

So
swing back and as you're swinging back move your front foot back to
your back foot and as you're completing the backswing move your front
foot back to where it was at address. Doing this will help you to feel
your upper body going back while your lower body is moving forward.

This
          is super powerful!

And this is a must see video because in it John Richardson reveals the top 3 reasons why golfers fail to improve. Make sure you watch right the way to the end too because when you fix the 3rd “mistake” you’ll undoubtedly lower your score the next game you you play.

Now who is John Richardson?

John is a golfer from Northern Ireland. And he was the typical golfer who shoots over 100, works full-time, has a family etc., etc. But John set a huge goal to shoot par or break par within a year and here were his rules for this challenge:

There must be a witness present
The course must be par 70 or more
The course must be at least 6000 yards
Don’t get divorced
Don’t go bankrupt or lose his business

Sam Torrance told John to “Dream On” and Darren Clarke said ‘Three years would be a realistic minimum’ to break par!

Well John shot a round of 70 (1 under par) – just 362 days after shooting 103! He achieved this while working full time, looking after the family etc. so if you’re in a similar situation to John and want to improve your golf game a lot then listen to what he has to say very carefully.
//-->

Over the last 4 years or so since John achieved his goal he has written a best selling book, is going to have a movie made about his year long journey AND he’s helped hundreds of golfers in his Break Par Blueprint Program to make massive improvements to their golf games too. But over the last 4 years John has identified 10 main mistakes that stop golfers from improving like they really want.

With John’s permission I’m lucky enough to be able to share these videos with you that will reveal these 10 top mistakes. And in this first video John shares the top 3 main mistakes golfers make when they try to improve. So watch this video and then leave your comments below.
About John Richardson: John is from Northern Ireland. And as an average golfer he set an extraordinary goal of shooting par or better within a year. His first round to kick off the challenge was 103. And then 362 days later he shot 70! Everything John did to achieve this goal is explained in full detail in this Break Par Blueprint Program which is perfect for the “average” golfer that want’s to make a big improvement to their golf game.
He won the 93rd U.S. PGA championship using a BELLY PUTTER. Almost immediately, sales for the Bellyputt.com extension kit went through the roof and the bellyputter gained PRO status in the golfing community! ...

Instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a belly putter, golfers now have a $39.99 option that allows them to "try it out" and decide for themselves if this is for them. It's so easy to attach to any putter that there's no frustration and the ability to get on the course with it immediately. Or in the office if they have one of those indoor practice putting greens....and an understanding boss.
You want to your golf swing to be the fastest right at impact, right?
Well, here’s a great drill that will teach you to swing the fastest at the bottom of your golf swing. To do this drill, simply set up to an imaginary ball as you normally would and then swing back at 10% of your normal pace. Then start your downswing at 10% of your normal pace. Or in other words….swing really slowly! BUT when you get to about 2 feet away from where a ball would be try to swing as fast as you possibly can.
When doing this feel the club hitting you on the back at the end of your golf swing. Swing through as hard and as fast as you possibly can. Do about 25 swings like this for 30 days and you won’t believe the difference in the distance you get from your shots when you swing normally.
And when you create a physical pre-shot routine here are some key things you should do…
1. Always start your physical pre-shot routine directly behind your ball.
2. Have your grip set to go before you address the ball.
3. Pick out an intermediate target to align your clubface to.
4. Have a waggle in your physical routine to keep movement up and to help keep you relaxed and ready to go.
5. Always make sure you look at your final target before swinging the club.
6. Have a physical swing trigger to signal the start of your golf swing.

Once you create a physical pre-shot routine it’s a good idea to write the steps down so that you can always refer back to it if you forget. Having said that, you should practice your physical pre-shot routine over and over to make sure you don’t forget.
The goal when practicing your physical pre-shot routine is so that on the course you don’t have to worry about where you’re positioning the ball, aligning or how your grip is. There are many different “ideas” on how hard you should grip the golf club, e.g. hold the grip as though you’re holding a baby bird OR hold the grip as tight as you would a loaf of bread etc., etc. But the bottom line really is not so much how hard you hold the grip but it’s how hard you don’t hold it.
You see, in an ideal world you should hold the golf grip just hard enough so it doesn’t slip or move around when you swing. How hard that is will vary from golfer to golfer as we’re all different. If you have very strong hands then you may not need to hold the golf grip as hard as, say, an elderly lady. So the defining line on how hard to golf grip a club is by how much it moves and here’s a great way to determine your golf grip movement.

Line up 7 balls in a row on tees and then start at the first ball and hit it and don’t alter your golf grip and then hit the next ball and the next one. If you come to a point when you can’t hit the ball because your golf grip is nothing like it should be then you know that your golf grip has slipped when you’ve swung. If you can’t hit the second shot because of your grip movement then you’ve got a grip slippage problem that needs fixing fast.
The main key to your grip slipping will most probably be due to your top hand moving. So here’s a simple exercise you can do to help fix this.

Grip the golf club as normal. But just before you swing place a golf tee between the pad of your left hand and the golf grip. Now this golf tee should be securely in place by the pressure that you’re placing on the golf grip with your left hand. Once it is you simply need to swing as normal and keep the tee in place.
Naturally this can only happen if you don’t move your top hand grip. And this will happen naturally just by you being aware of the golf tee and trying to keep it in place. Then after some practice with this exercise go back and do the 7 ball exercise and see if you’ve improved your grip security. I’m sure you will find you have improved it. So try this golf grip drill and see for yourself.

But don’t let anyone tell you that there is one golf grip that everyone should use, because that is simply not true. You’ve just got to look at professional golfers to see this. For example, Ben Hogan used a weak grip to help combat a hook problem. Nick Faldo uses a neutral grip. Then John Daly uses a strong golf grip.
Now you’ve probably heard that the weakness/strength of your golf grip is related to where the V’s of your hands are pointing. But I’ve got a much better way to check your grip and find out what works best for you.
First of all, get a semi permanent felt tip pin and draw circles about 1 cm above your top hand’s knuckles. So for a right handed golfer you would do this on your left hand. For a left handed golfer you would do this on your right hand.
Now simply practice taking your grip and see what your grip feels like when you can see 1 knuckle, then 2 knuckles, then 3 knuckles on your top hand. Also do this exercise with your feet together. By doing this you’ll always have a reference position that you can easily repeat.

By the way, a 1 knuckle grip is considered a weak golf grip, a 2 knuckle grip is considered a neutral golf grip, and a 3 knuckle grip is considered a strong golf grip.
After you’ve setup with each grip then hit balls with each of these golf grips. Incidentally when placing your bottom hand on the grip simply let it go along with what the top hand is doing. And do this so that the groove in the middle of your bottom hand fit’s snugly into your top hands thumb.
Now if you struggle in hitting one particular shot, i.e. a slice or hook, here’s some advice that will help you.
If you slice the ball a lot you should tend towards a stronger golf grip, e.g. 3 to 4 knuckles showing on the top hand. And conversely if you hook the ball a lot you should move towards a weaker grip, e.g. 1-2 knuckles showing.
But the bottom line is to experiment.
Once you’ve got a good golf grip that works well for you always check it regularly to make sure you’re doing the same thing. Because over time your golf grip can easily become stronger or weaker without you noticing. Also one final thought. Have a system of setting up so you check your golf grip strength as part of your pre-shot routine. Doing this will help to create greater consistency in your game on an ongoing basis.
