Google's New URL Removal Tool is Very Professional.

Google launched improved public URL removal tool to make it easier to request updates based on changes on other people's websites.

This tool is useful for removals on other peoples' websites. You could use this tool if a page has been removed completely, or if it was just changed and you need to have the snippet & cached page removed. If you're the webmaster of the site, then using the Webmaster Tools URL removal feature is faster & easier.

You can remove complete pages if the page is actually not live or blocked to spiders. You can remove content from a page if the content shows in the Google cache and is not live on the page.

How to request a page be removed from search results:

If the page itself was removed completely, you can request that it's removed from Google's search results. For this, it's important that the page returns the proper HTTP result code (403, 404, or 410), has a noindex robots meta tag, or is blocked by the robots.txt (blocking via robots.txt may not prevent indexing of the URL permanently). You can check the HTTP result code with a HTTP header checker. While we attempt to recognize "soft-404" errors, having the website use a clear response code is always preferred.

Here's how to submit a page for removal:

Enter the URL of the page. As before, this needs to be the exact URL as indexed in our search results. Here's how to find the URL.

The analysis tool will confirm that the page is gone. Confirm the request to complete the submission.

How to request a page's cache & snippet be removed from search results:

If the page wasn't removed, you can also use this tool to let us know that a text on a page (such as a name) has been removed or changed. It'll remove the snippet & cached page in Google's search results until our systems have been able to reprocess the page completely (it won't affect title or ranking). In addition to the page's URL, you'll need at least one word that used to be on the page but is now removed. You can learn more about cache removals in our Help Center.

Enter the URL of the page which has changed. This needs to be the exact URL as indexed in our search results. Here's how to find the URL.

Confirm that the page has been updated or removed, and confirm that the cache & snippet are outdated (do not match the current content).

Now, enter a word that no longer appears on the live page, but which is still visible in the cache or snippet. See our previous blog post on removals for more details.

Matt Cutts Said How Can A Site Recover From A Period Of Spamming Links?

Latest video, Google’s Matt Cutts published a video answered the question ”How can a site recover from a period of spamming links?”

The example given: How did Interflora turn their ban in 11 days? Can you explain what kind of penalty they had, how did they fix it, as some of us have spent months try to clean things up after an unclear GWT notification. How to help report false positives?

Matt didn’t give a specific answer to the question, instead he said he wanted to answer it in a general sense.

Matt said:

“You should disavow the bad links with a vengeance and disavow all the links that might be paid. Don’t use the disavow tool a single link at a time, instead use the domain level disavow option. ”

Matt Cutt Tweets Google Busts Anglo Rank Link Selling Service

Google has targeted yet another link selling network, Anglo Rank, as announced in a c heeky tweet from Matt Cutts:

Anglo Rank was a paid link service with links reputed to be from multiple private networks, in order to give it the “no footprints” status it had been marketing on. Cutts’ tweet directly quoted the language from the selling features listed on their sales page.

Despite coming under fire from Cutts, the seller has been saying it is business as usual and very few sites within their networks were actually hit. However, because the warnings are in Webmaster Central and Anglo Rank does not own the sites with the links they are using, they might not be aware of which sites have or have not been penalized (particularly as this was happening at the end of last week). We will likely see more fallout from it this week, if the damage is as widespread as Cutts tweeting about it would imply.

The seller commented that the only way Google would be able to take out the network is if they negated all footer and sidebar links:

ANGLO RANK Is not a 'Network', It Is a service which resells links from private networks which are there for years with 100's and 1000's of sites.

They'll hit 100 sites here and there and next day there will be 10,000 new sites In these networks. Only way for google to tackle with this Issue is to completely devalue footer and sidebar links and I don't see this coming In near future [sic]

Judging from the forum comments on the Anglo Rank sales page, many webmasters are concerned about how Google might have discovered sites within the network. There were plenty of warnings and speculation that Google has their own spam team members in the forum, in order to find information on which sites are included, or even purchasing links themselves.

However, there’s also been the opposite effect, where webmasters are definitely interested in purchasing links from the network, especially with the seller’s reassurances that they were barely touched. Because Cutts commented on the network specifically, a lot of people decided to investigate Anglo Rank to see if it was a viable source for paid links. With that said, it is dangerous to purchase links from a network Cutts has publicly said the spam team is attacking, particularly when no one really knows how hard they were hit.

This isn’t the first link network Google has attempted to take down. There have been many this year alone, including Ghost Rank 2.0 based out of Russia and the Text Link Ads network.

Neither Cutts nor Google has said anything further about Anglo Rank; however, they usually don’t say much when it comes to taking action against major link networks.

This update rolled out despite Matt Cutts announcing in October he would be surprised to see an update happen before 2014, because the toolbar export was ‘broken’.

Nobody knows when the next Google Pagerank update will happen, only Google. The last one was 6 December 2013. Yes, it was ‘late’.

What is it?

Google says:

Webpages with a higher PageRank are more likely to appear at the top of Google search results.

…but that is NOT the whole story. I’ve seen sites go from anywhere from PR 0 to PR 7 in one update and no difference in the number of visitors the site received from natural search.

How Do I increase My PR?

In 2013 it’s a lot more risky to manipulate Google Pagerank, so the mantra should not be to “increase your Pagerank” but rather “get quality sites to link to you” which will have the same effect. In 2013, it’s MUCH MUCH HARDER to manipulate Pagerank so it’s probably better to focus on just getting links from real reputable sites. If you focus onwhere your next QUALITY, EDITORIAL link comes from – your real pr will go up, but more importantly, so will the number of visitors you receive from Google (dependant on other factors too, mind you).

What is Toolbar PR?

Toolbar Pagerank is a ‘simplification of REAL PAGERANK – which is a complex algorithm – and ONE of the ways Google works under-the-hood. On it’s own – Pagerank is NOT the be and end all of ranking high in Google. Likewise – just because a page has a Toolbar grey in the toolbar does not mean a page has no real Pagerank – it can mean that of course, but it can mean other things.

NOTE – The fastest way to lose toolbar PR is to lose high PR links pointing at your site, or be caught selling links, which is against Google’s guidelines. Although in 2013, you’ll find Google is more concerned about DEVALUING your links rather than dropping your Pagerank, if it is confident you are selling links to help other websites rank better.

How Fast Does Real PR Accrue?

A page probably accrues real Pagerank within hours – perhaps instantly in 2013 – and Toolbar Pagerank updates every 3 or so months. The most common reason for a drop in Toolbar Pagerank is simply your website is receiving less Pagerank via the links it has pointing to it from other sites. Pagerank can also go down as the result of a penalty. If you have been penalised there may be a notice in Google Webmaster Tools.

Will A High PR increase my rankings?

Toolbar PR has little effect on it’s own on the amount of visitors Google will send you. A reduction in real PR however could see less pages on your site being indexed, or your site crawled less often, or less deep. Think of Google Toolbar PR as ‘an indication of the PR of what your site might have been a couple of weeks ago.

To get a higher Pagerank, you simply need to get a lot of other pages with PR to link to you.

Pagerank flows, and so can be manipulated, funnelled, blocked (with NoFollow) and screwed up. It is also possible for an internal page to have a higher PR than the home page.

Google Pagerank is ‘donated’ to other pages and is shared by the number of outgoing links on the pages. In theory, you may get more Google Pagerank benefit from a Google Pagerank 3 page with only two outbound links than a Google Page Rank 5 page with hundreds of outbound links. As I have said I’ve also experienced sites go from anywhere from PR 0 to PR 7 in one update although in 2013 it’s MUCH MUCH HARDER to manipulate Pagerank.

Pagerank was a recursive algorithm, with decay factored in, and it’s probably pretty far removed today from the original Google Pagerank paper created by Larry Page, who it’s named after.

Pagerank may be about whether you are in Google’s main index, or not in, and probably, a measure to gauge how often or how deep you can expect Googlebot to crawl your pages. It’s as simple as that from my observations. A high PR won’t rank above a low PR page just on Toolbar PR. In theory the good thing about a lot of Pagerank, is you can get a lot more pages into Google – that’s it. It does not improve rank – it only allows a page to rank, and perhaps MORE pages to rank.

Is Google Pagerank pointless?

Certainly not – and there are indications that Google uses Pagerank even today to choose a reputable source for a piece of duplicate content found on multiple sites, for instance. Sites with no Pagerank at all can often be signs of ‘dead’ spammy sites, too, which is useful when investigating backlinks to a website.

Should I link out to other sites? Should I nofollow external links to keep my Google juice?

No! There’s much better reward in linking out to others, and building relationships with like-minded authors on other sites. Do not be scared to link to sites you trust. Your site is actually more valuable to Google and other search engines if you link out sensibly, and editorially. More importantly, it’s more valuable to other web masters.

Smartphone Crawl Errors in Google Webmaster Tools

Google announced last night a new feature within Google Webmaster Tools specific for tracking crawl errors on smartphones.

There is now a new filter within the crawl errors section of Google Webmaster Tools for Smartphone errors.

Pierre Far, who is the face of Google for smartphone webmaster topics, shared onGoogle+ that what is provided in this report are the "common mistakes we see in smartphone-optimized sites." Now only do these errors hurt your "site's user experience" Pierre said they can "affect your site's ranking."

Server errors: A server error is when Googlebot got an HTTP error status code when it crawled the page.

Not found errors and soft 404s: A page can show a "not found" message to Googlebot, either by returning an HTTP 404 status code or when the page is detected as a soft error page.

Faulty redirects: A faulty redirect is a smartphone-specific error that occurs when a desktop page redirects smartphone users to a page that is not relevant to their query. A typical example is when all pages on the desktop site redirect smartphone users to the homepage of the smartphone-optimized site.

Blocked URLs: A blocked URL is when the site's robots.txt explicitly disallows crawling by Googlebot for smartphones. Typically, such smartphone-specific robots.txt disallow directives are erroneous. You should investigate your server configuration if you see blocked URLs reported in Webmaster Tools.

SEO is Really Dead!!

Buying banner ads on search? Measuring keyword success in SEO via a ranking report? Google looking more like a portal (a la Lycos back in the day)?

No, it isn't the year 2000 all over again. This is today's search environment.
The More SEO Changes, the More Things Stay the Same

SEO, at its core, has always been and will continue to be about gaining a natural presence in the search engines. Certainly, over the course of the past 10 years, what that natural presence might be has changed quite a bit (search results are no longer links to "just" 10 web pages).

The changes we've experienced over the past few years have certainly gained the attention of our industry. "Content marketing" became a buzz word. Social media marketing has become a routine part of SEO recommendations. Content promotion is key to gaining natural links.

All of these changes were brought "to a head" for me when I read an email from Melanie White, Editor of ClickZ & Search Engine Watch, about the news that SES Conference & Expo is rebranding to become ClickZ Live:

In a natural transition that recognizes the ever-evolving changes taking place in the digital marketing industry and the more diverse educational needs of today's marketing community, our global SES Conference & Expo series, will be changing its name and rebranding to ClickZ Live.

But what's in a name I hear you ask? The shiny new ClickZ Live series will be an extension of ClickZ and will incorporate all the many verticals that you can find in our online publication, including social media, display, mobile, gaming, email, digital TV advertising and marketing, and more. As the digital landscape has changed and content marketers have come to expect more beyond just search marketing (SEO & PPC), we too wanted to align ourselves with this evolution. And consolidating the content between our current sessions at SES, along with the breadth of knowledge and topics found online at ClickZ.com, under just one brand makes perfect sense.

It seems like "search" is being taken out of "search engine optimization" (at least the focus on "search" is being taken out of the conference formerly known as Search Engine Strategies).

In truth, many companies, including my own, came to this conclusion months ago. We determined that we needed to reposition our company, because what we do mostly (SEO) is now so involved in so many aspects of "digital marketing". We started with the things that were easily changed (titles went from "SEO Strategist" to "Digital Marketing Strategist" and a redesign/rebranding will be coming soon.
SEO Engagement Today

There are many components of an "SEO engagement" today. Some of those that existed years ago that are now "hot topics" include:
Content Marketing: This buzzword has caught fire over the course of the past few years. Many people define "content marketing" as "writing content", and I suggest that without "content", you can't have a web presence. So, is this really all that new? Nope. Been doing this forever, but it is much more than "just" textual content on a web page, now. Infographics. Video. Viral/shareable content. Content takes many forms. The definition of what "content" is has certainly evolved over the years.
PR: In the SEO world (years ago) this abbreviation was strictly used for "press releases". In today's SEO, it's more about "public relations", finding influencers and pitching stories/content or using services such as HARO to find opportunities to have our clients contribute to an article. Yeah, we'll still involve ourselves in press releases, but it's more about the promotion of something of substance in order to gain traffic, awareness, and the possibility that someone might actually write about (and link to?) what we're promoting. "PR" has evolved.

Link Building: It's still important – dare I say "vital" – to work on gaining links for a website to gain a natural presence in the search engines. While the engines work toward lessening the importance of link building, the value of links isn't purely for SEO. And, today, as we all know – it's not just about "links" but rather "citations". These can take many forms, but essentially link and citation building is about "good marketing/promotion". Link building has evolved.
What Should We Call This New Industry of Ours?

We are, more and more, talking with our clients about things that include what they're doing with email marketing (wasn't that supposed to be "dead", 10 years ago?), video (ideation/production/promotion), and viral content production/promotion.

Krista LaRiviere wrote a terrific piece, "Web Presence Optimization", about the shift of SEO. It's absolutely true.

Many SEO/SEM agencies have evolved toward this truth. The SES Conference has evolved toward this truth.

Perhaps "the truth" is that "search" engine optimization has gotten to the point where we need to refer to it as "digital marketing optimization" or "web presence optimization", or some combination thereof?

Matt Cutts: No Limit on Number of Links on a Page

Matt Cutts Said their is no limit on number of links on a page...

Matt cutts answering a question “How many links on a page should we have? Is there a limit?” Matt said that 100 links limit was actually removed in 2008 itself.Technically, it was not limit on number of links, it was limit on page size of 100KB, as they assumed that if one link size is 1KB, than its fine to have 100 links on certain page, but it was for old age algorithms and not valid any more for modern web to have limits on page size.

Google’s Matt Cutts posted a video explained that there is no limit on number of links which a single page can have, there can be more than 100’s of links per page if they are not of spammy nature and Google will not penalize you for that.

Matt explained that webmasters can have as many as link they want on any of web page, and there is no restrictions, with change of how web page contain rich media, images, Content and other web elements, the limit on page size which Google bots can crawl also increased and hence the number of the links.

Matt also clarified that more links means that Page Rank will be divided equally in all those pages, so have more links means of outflow of page rank to other links existing on that page.

One thing which webmasters need to take care that if a certain page have too many links, it should not look like spammed page or filled with spammy or low quality links, in those case, Google reserves the right to take action against such pages.

11 FREE Tools for Measuring Social Media Success

One of the most challenging tasks in selling digital marketing to the C-Suite is defining the return on investment (ROI). It can be particularly challenging when justifying the budget for social media marketing (SMM).

Many SMM efforts lend themselves to brand building, community building, and customer service. Unlike "traditional" SEO, these activities aren't always transactional in nature.

Marketing ROI has traditionally been measured like this:

Return on Investment (%) = (Net profit / Marketing Costs) × 100.

Sometimes, cost per customer acquisition is the measure. As recently as 2010, the dawn of social media marketing, those in the C-Suite attempted to apply the tried and true transactional ROI model to SMM. The CMO Survey, as reported by Forbes, lists the most common metrics used to measure social media investment.

By 2013, only 9 percent of marketers were using traditional ROI metrics, down from 17 percent in the initial survey. The reason: many social media activities can't be effectively measured using a transactional formula. SMM is often best measured in terms of audience reach, engagement and sentiment.

That said, there are highly successful direct response campaigns that run on Facebook and other social networks every day. These approaches deliver an ROI that can easily be measured the old-fashioned way. Pam Dyer lists 10 here. If that isn't enough, Rob Petersen has another six examples.

Business Insider recently published a story on the death of social ROI. They claim that companies are starting to drop the idea that social media ROI can be measured.

I asked Nicole Harrison (@SocialNicole) about this and the importance of ROI in social media. She was adamant that social media done correctly will deliver results and recommended the following list of 11 free tools for measuring both ROI and social media success.

1. HootSuite

HootSuite is a good all around tool to use for management and metrics tracking. You can schedule posts from multiple social media channels as well as create over 30 individual reports. The free metrics are somewhat limited, but for beginners it's all you will need.

2. SocialMention

SocialMention is an aggregate tool similar to Google Alerts, but for social media, only. This will give you insight into not only what is being said, but who is saying it and what the general sentiment is.

You can set an RSS feed, email alerts, or even add a real-time widget to your website. You can also download a CSV/Excel file for further evaluation.

3. Klout

Monitoring influence isn't an exact science, but having a tool that helps you begin to gage someone's online presence can be useful. Klout is a free tool that will allow you to measure influence on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and several other channels.

4. Facebook Insights

The Facebook insights dashboard gives you all of the analytics data for your Facebook page. The insights allow you to understand your audience, what they are reacting to, and adjust your content to meet their needs.

5. Twitter Analytics

Twitter now has its own analytics dashboard. With Twitter Analytics you can track timeline activity, including tweets that were favorited, retweeted, and replied to. The tool also tracks number of mentions, new followers and newly followed. For more information, see "Twitter Analytics: A Beginner's Guide".

6. Google Analytics

With Google Analytics Campaign Tracking, you can set up links for campaigns with UTM parameters to track the campaign. Go here to create the link using Google link shortener for campaigns.

This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to track success of a specific link within a campaign. It's also one of the most overlooked methods of tracking.

7. Custom Social Media Reports

Google Analytics does a nice job tracking the number of visitors to visit a website from different social channels. These custom reports give you additional insights as to how traffic is being driven to your website.

If you aren't blogging or creating new and useful content to draw people to your website, don't expect these numbers to be high. It requires a content strategy to really work people toward your website. These easy to install one-click reports are invaluable.

8. Bitly

This link shortener allows you track everything you share. This is a great way to see what your audience is interacting with and decide if the content you share is valuable.

Bitly also integrates into many third-party software packages, making it a great umbrella tool, as you can track within multiple platforms. For example, you may use Social Sprout, a paid management platform and Buffer both with Bitly then review data in individual platforms or as a whole through Bitly.

9. Buffer

Buffer is a great tool for scheduling content. You simply fill up your Buffer account each day and it will automatically post the content to the channels you select.

For metrics, you're able to look at a dashboard inside Buffer to see what posts are getting the most interaction, or attach it to Bitly to include in your general tracking. You can also attach UTM parameters to track traffic in Google Analytics.

10. TweetReach

TweetReach is a great tool for tracking a campaign or conversation on Twitter. Simply enter your search term or hashtag and allow TweetReach to search for the tweets to tell you reach, exposure, activity, top contributors, and more. You can look at the past 50 mentions for free.

11. Keyhole

Keyhole is similar to TweetReach except that it also tracks Facebook and Instagram as well as Twitter. This is a great way to track a hashtag or keyword for a campaign or event.

The free social tracker gives you a sample of what the tracker can do. If you signup you can get a three-day free trial, which may be adequate for an event or snapshot view of a campaign. To get a long-term view you can sign up for a monthly paid plan.

Summary

Measuring social media ROI isn't always easy. Building a brand and improving your customer service may not show up directly in your analytics, but these "soft" metrics can have a major impact on the bottom line.

Google's Matt Cutts gave a better chance to people on his personal blog asking suggestions for webmaster tools 2014, people what would like to see changes in Google Webmaster Tools for 2014.

A few years ago, Matt Cutts asked what people would like from Google’s free webmaster tools, He shared a pretty big list of ideas he thinks people would like to see, but noted that the Webmaster Tools team isn't actually working on these features

This is awesome opportunity for people to be able to suggest things they want on webmaster tools and get heard by cutts and webmaster developing panel members, It is interesting to look comments who are already posted their suggestions, Everyone have own personal list of things I would love to see, and I see others wanting the same thing as well.
I'm sure that some companies create their own SEO tools for webmasters are keeping a close eye on those suggestions as well, to see if there are any features they can implement themselves.

We don’t have idea how long the blog post will be open for new comments, so if you have any great ideas don't delay adding comments to them, This will definitely be your best chance to get heard on new features, far better than trying to get face time with Cutts at a conference.

Matt cutts said I’m not saying that the Webmaster Tools team will work only on any of these. What I’d really like to hear is what you would like to see in 2014, either in Webmaster Tools or from the larger team that works with webmasters and site owners.

Google's official position on webmaster best practices really hasn't changed much over the years. What has changed is the search engine's ability to enforce these guidelines through improved algorithms. Matt says the main purpose of the disavow tool is to clean up links acquired as a result of doing bad SEO.

Matt Cutts, head of Google's web spam team, post a video about disavowing links in his latest video where a user writes in to ask:

Should webmasters use the disavow tool, even if it is believed that no penalty has been applied? For example. if we believe ‘Negative SEO’ has been attempted, or spammy sites we have contacted have not removed links.

Matt says there’s no cause to worry about disavowing links even without receiving a message about them in your Google Webmaster console.

In which cases you can use this tool even without a manual action?

1. Once you have ready to drop all other options in attempting to get those links removed from the web, it would be a perfect time to use the disavow tool.

2. If you’re at all worried about someone intended to do harm doing negative SEO to harm your site, or you have reason to believe someone has already done so, Matt says this would be a great time to use the disavow tool as well.

3. If you have been proactive in monitoring your back links and you see a strange pattern arising, then Matt says feel free to go ahead and preemptively disavow those links.

4. To sum it up, if you’re at all worried about links pointing to your site that may cause you to get hit with a spam penalty, just go ahead and disavow them.

5. You see your rrankings dropped and you think it has happend due to Google algorithm change, i.e. Penguin algorithm.

6. You are afraid someone will submit a spam report about you.

How to Get Your Site Ready for Penguin 3.0:

As you know, Google rolled out Penguin 2.0 By May 22nd, only 2.3% of the sites in Google’s index have taken a hit from it. Needless to say, Penguin 2.0 was nothing compared to the first iteration.

Why?

Some say that Google Penguin 2.0 was less harsh than the first.

But I think that it had more to do with the fact that most SEOs that changed their link building approach after Penguin 1.0. Blog comments were replaced by guest blogging. Profile links were replaced with broken link building. And many black hatters (myself included) went legit.

Unfortunately, Google isn’t done rolling out punishing updates that nail site owners who violate their webmaster guidelines. If you want to survive Google updates, you need to be ahead of the curve.

Here’s a quick and “dirty” guide to surviving Google’s next update. Obviously, I don’t have insider knowledge at Mountain View, but I do have a few educated predictions about where the Google algorithm is moving.

Step #1: Pay More Attention to Linking Domain Relevancy

Many of the top SEOs I follow have completely ditched PageRank, DA, PA, LDR and other indicators of authority, setting their cross-hairs on relevancy.

I’ve already noticed the difference that a relevant link makes in the SERPs… even one that’s not particularly authoritative. In my experience, links from closely related sites work like gangbusters.

More importantly, related links represent something even more important than short term SERP gains: a natural link profile. Although determining relevancy algorithmically isn’t easy, it’s something Google will be working on between now and Penguin 3.0.

When link prospecting, consider looking at a site’s relevancy in addition to the usual suspects of authority factors. Relevancy is a crucial part of link building that will never die.

Step #2: Rethink Your On-Page SEO

Keyword stuffing may be so 2005, but that doesn’t mean solid, advanced white hat on-page SEO is obsolete. In fact, I recently compiled a list of the most important “advanced on-page SEO strategies“.

Amazingly, only two of the insights had anything to do with meta tags!

In fact, most of the strategies were simply tips on how to create a better landing page for users.

After all, Google uses usability and user experience metrics to determine whether or not a page satisfies a user’s query.

I recommend doing the little things to make your content even better, instead of worrying about relevancy signals.

These include:

Creating an engaging first paragraph to improve dwell time
Using subheaders generously on your pages
Writing long, in-depth content
Including diagrams, videos and screenshots

Step #3: Don’t Forget Brand Signals

Remember that several of Google’s ranking factors revolve around so-called “brand signals”. In general, Google gives big brands special treatment when it comes to ranking and algorithm updates.

But how can you — John Q webmaster — look like GM or Microsoft?

Fortunately, you don’t have to execute a Fortune 500 budget marketing plan to make it happen. Here are a few tricks to increase brand signals on your site:

Make sure to have active and regularly updated Facebook, Twitter and Google+ profiles. Also consider adding LinkedIn and Pinterest to your social media mix. The more “digital real estate” you take up, the bigger you look.
Use your brand name online. When people talk about YouTube, do they use anchor text like “video sharing website”? Of course not! So when linking to your site, make sure some of your anchor text is branded.
Add Google authorship to your site. Even if you don’t write a lot of content, one or more Google verified authors tells Google that you’re a real person that’s responsible for the content on that page.

What Else?

Besides creating a great site, moving slowly and carefully with link building, and building quality social signals, these 3 tips should help shield your site from Penguin 3.0…and even Penguin 5.0!

After all, they’re all tried-and-true strategies that help make your site better for users and search engines: something that will never go out of style.

Google’s Matt Cutts: Don’t Duplicate Your Meta Descriptions

Matt Cutts, Google’s head of search spam, answers a question about meta descriptions in his latest video where a user writes in to ask:

Is it necessary for each single page within my website to have a unique metatag description?

When it comes to metatag descriptions, Matt says there are really only two viable options. You can either have unique metatag descriptions, or you can choose not to put any metatag description at all. Definitely don’t have duplicate metatag descriptions.

A very easy way to avoid having duplicate metatag descriptions is by registering and verifying your website with the free Google Webmaster Tools console. Google will crawl your website and tell you if they find duplicate metatag descriptions.

Generally speaking, Matt says it’s probably not worth your time to write a unique metatag description for every single page on your website. Matt doesn’t even bother to do that on his own blog.

Matt recommends doing this only on pages that really matter. Such as your home page or pages that have high ROI. If you notice that some of your pages have really bad auto-generated snippets, you should consider writing a unique metatag description for those as well.

To sum everything up, you should avoid having duplicate metatag descriptions on all pages. Instead, write unique descriptions for some pages and just let Google auto-generate the rest.
