The Karate Kid Beats The A-Team

After three weeks at #1, DreamWorks Animation's Shrek Forever After met some competition it couldn't withstand in two retro projects that harked back to the mid-'80s, Harald Zwart's remake of The Karate Kid (Sony) and Joe Carnahan's action flick based on the television show, The A-Team (20th Century Fox).

It was expected to be a very close race but The Karate Kid, teaming Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, far exceeded all expectations opening with $19 million on Friday and an estimated $56 million in its first weekend in 3,663 theaters for an impressive per-site average of $15,288. That's the third biggest opener of a summer in which many sure-things failed to deliver on expectations and the fifth highest opening of the year so far.

The A-Team starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Jessica Biel and Patrick Wilson ended up doing less than half that business in a similar number of theaters, bringing in an estimated $26 million in its first three days. That was an opening closer to comedy TV adaptations like Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson's Starsky and Hutch rather than the summer action movies like S.W.A.T.. Budgeted at $110 million, The A-Team will have to bring in a good amount of international business to make that back.

Shrek Forever After (DreamWorks/Paramount) dropped to third place, down 42% with $15.8 million in its fourth weekend and a gross of $210 million after a month in theaters. It's currently the #4 highest grossing movie of the year and it should move up to third place past DreamWorks Animation's How to Train a Dragon by Friday.

The Jonah Hill-Russell Brand road comedy Get Him to the Greek (Universal) dropped two places to fourth with $10.1 million and $36.5 million in ten days, while the Ashton Kutcher-Katherine Heigl action-comedy Killers (Lionsgate) dropped 47% in its second weekend for an estimated $8.2 million to bring its total to $30.4 million.

Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time dropped to sixth place with $6.6 million and a weak $72.3 million total domestically, while continuing to do well overseas, bringing in $19.7 million for an international gross of $190.3 million.

It was followed by the family movie Marmaduke (20th Century Fox) with $6 million in seventh place--a considerable 48% drop from its opening week--and New Line/Warner Bros.' Sex and the City 2 with $5.5 million for eighth place with a total gross of $85 million.

Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 (Paramount/Marvel Studios) edges closer to $300 million this weekend with another $4.5 million to land in ninth place.

The top 10 was rounded out by Vincenzo Natali's sci-fi thriller Splice (Warner Bros.) closed off the Top 10 with $2.9 million, down a staggering 61% from its disappointing opening weekend.

The release of two strong new movies helped the box office recover from the last few weeks with the Top 10 being up 9% from last year when the strongest offering was Sony's remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta which opened in third with $23.4 million.

Predators New TV Spot

The first television spot for Robert Rodriguez's reboot for Predators has now hit your small screen. The movie is a new take on the original that has had sequel after sequel hit since the release of the first movie.

This one comes from the mind of Robert Rodriguez, and it stars Adrien Brody. A group of human killers is sent to the alien planet as some sort of punishment, and they are hunted one by one by the alien race. That sounds like an interesting twist to me! We all know when it comes to movies, Rodriguez does things out of the norm. That is what might make this work.

The A-Team Review & New Clip!!

It’s been a fairly weak 2010 summer movie season… Iron Man 2 was OK but didn’t live up to the first film, Nightmare on Elm Street was mediocre at best, some folks liked Robin Hood (although it’s not what I’d call summer movie fare), Get Him to the Greek had its moments but was no Hangover and despite trying hard, The Losers was, well, a loser. At least we had Kick-Ass…

So while there hasn’t been anything that you could really call a summer popcorn movie home run, I’m here to tell you that The A-Team comes pretty darn close.

I’m sure most of you know that The A-Team was a kitschy action TV series that ran in the mid-1980s. It starred George Peppard, Dirk Benedict, Dwight Shultz and Mr. T as an ex-special forces team falsely accused of a crime and on the run from the government. It featured over-the-top action and fight scenes which were defined by signature camera shots (Mr. T launching a body over the camera which filmed from below) and an emphatic lack of injuries despite the extreme nature of the stunts.

Many folks have fond memories of the show and may be predisposed to accusations of “you ruined my childhood” or “you’re soiling the memory of a classic!” For those of you thinking that, I invite you to go back and watch an episode or two today, and then get back to me with your fresh reaction. Sure, it was fun. It was also completely cheesy and formulaic. When a filmmaker decides to approach a project like this he has two choices:

1. Go in a completely different direction (for example turn a serious TV show into a comedy or vice versa).

2. Be as faithful to the spirit of the original as is practical.

With The A-Team, director Joe Carnahan went with a whole lot of #2 and just a touch of #1.

Unexpectedly, the film opens before the team has assembled, with only Hannibal (a cigar-chomping Liam Neeson) and “Face” (the studly and often shirtless Bradley Cooper) knowing each other and working together. During an operation in Mexico they meet B.A. Baracus (Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson) and Murdock (District 9’s Sharlto Copley).

Unlike the opening scene in The Losers, which tried to establish a connection between the characters as well as between them and the audience (and failed miserably), the first 15 minutes or so here do it admirably. Once it’s done, it’ll remind you of a very extended James Bond opening sequence -- a way to transition you into the film. Immediately we “get” Hannibal, Face, Murdock and even Baracus after each of their introductory scenes, and it doesn’t take long to cement the relationships via great chemistry and snappy dialog.

After the initial meetings (with a number of great action scenes right off the bat), we cut to eight years later, nearing the end of American troops being stationed in Iraq. The “Alpha Team” members have been the go-to guys to get the really tricky and nigh-impossible missions done. Right here is where the story gets a bit muddled, with Army Captain Sosa (Jessica Beil) arriving to tell Face (with whom she has “history”) very explicitly to not go on a mission to Bagdhad to retrieve stolen plates for the printing of U.S. dollars. The concern of course is that terrorists will be able to print billions of dollars of “unbacked” currency (like our currency is currently backed? But I digress…). She is tasked with retrieving the plates using a private mercenary outfit called Black Forest.

Hannibal has no confidence or respect for them and a CIA operative plays into that lack of confidence, wanting the A-Team to retrieve the plates instead of Black Forest. Hannibal convinces the on-site General (Gerald McRaney), who is an old friend, to let them go on the mission.

Hannibal concocts an insanely over-the-top plan that of course goes off without a hitch (and gives us the next crazy action set piece), but in the aftermath things go wrong via a doublecross and the team is falsely accused and convicted of being involved in the theft of the plates. The members of the team are all shipped off to different high security military prisons. Of course Hannibal vows to make those who really stole the plates pay and to recover them, and with the help of the CIA operative (who you KNOW has his own agenda, of course) he breaks out and gets his comrades out of prison (Murdock’s escape was particularly funny).

The combined escape brings us to the scene you’ve seen in the trailer with a tank falling from the sky with a parachute and Face shooting a 50 cal gun. I’m here to tell you that scene is crazy-awesome.

From there it’s all about getting to the bottom of exactly who is behind all this, where the leader of Black Forest is and how to retrieve the plates and deliver them to the Federal government in order to clear their names.

Are there things to complain about with the film? Sure. Shakey-cam. It’s not “deep” or “complex,” the third act bogs down a bit and is somewhat convoluted with a final action sequence where the director seems to have said “We have to make this big. No, you don’t understand, I mean BIG. HUGE. MEGA-GIGANTIC,” and frankly I thought it was a bit much. I thought Biel’s character’s motivation was pretty damned weak, but they try to have it make some sense later on (not very successfully). Oh, and as far as her acting… she’s REALLY gorgeous.

But you know what?

This movie was FUN.

I found myself grinning through much of it and laughing out loud more than once. There was plenty of action, the chemistry between the characters was great and I thought representative of the original series, Liam Neeson was an excellent Hannibal and Sharlto Copley was fantastic as Murdock. Bradley Cooper
was fine as Face -- he’ll appeal to the ladies in the audience, especially with his gratuitous shirtless scenes. And I’m going to say it: I thought Quinton Jackson did an OK job as B.A. Baracus. It’s not a terribly complex role, and I’m sorry but Mr. T wasn’t exactly doing Shakespearean acting during his stint in the role. Oh, and I really enjoyed Brian Bloom as Pike, the leader of Black Forest. Acted like he came right off the set of Goodfellas.

There aren’t a lot of movies that you can actually label as “fun,” but if there is any genre (if you can call it a genre) that SHOULD fit that label it’s summer action movies. Sadly, not a lot of those films actually earn that label despite trying overtly to attain it. Star Trek was another film to which I’d apply that label. I’d say last year’s The Hangover as well (which also starred Cooper).

For the parents out there, while there is some violence that’s definitely PG-13 in the film, much of it is “cartoony” and played for laughs (ending is a little rough, I don’t think I’d bring kids under 8 or 10). The only nudity to speak of is a shirtless Cooper. I only mention this because Mr. T has been complaining about the violence and nudity in the film.

While some are bashing The A-Team, I give it an unabashed recommendation as a fun summer popcorn movie.

Batman 3 to Begin Filming in March 2011?

Christopher Nolan’s Batman 3 could start filming in March of 2011. Though no official statement has been made, the date would put the film in theaters right in time for its July 20, 2012 release.

Christopher Nolan’s upcoming dramatic thriller Inception is a little over a month away, but the buzz on the director’s next project is already heating up.

Today, we’re hearing rumors of a possible start date for Batman 3 filming – March 2011. At first glance, that might seem a bit quick for the follow-up to one of the highest grossing, and most critically acclaimed films, in recent history – but, a March 2011 start date would actually give the Batman sequel plenty of room for its proposed July 20, 2012 release.

The word comes from a recent comment made by LA Times columnist Geoff Boucher, while prepping his readers for an upcoming interview with Nolan:

"On Saturday at the Hero Complex Film Festival
, we’ll hear Christopher Nolan discuss his filmmaking accomplishments between our screenings of the underrated 2002 thriller “Insomnia” and billion-dollar blockbuster “The Dark Knight,” but don’t think that the discussion won’t be forward-looking as well — the future looks fascinating for this 39-year-old auteur, and I plan to ask him about the third Batman film, which starts shooting in March, and his plans to produce a Superman revival with his partner and wife, Emma Thomas.”

Of course the knee-jerk line in question, “I plan to ask him about the third Batman film, which starts shooting in March” certainly provides room for plenty of speculation – Did Boucher get a Batman 3 scoop while prepping for the Hero Complex Film Festival interview? Was Boucher misinformed? Is Boucher, in fact, Batman himself?

With industry readers and pundits descending on the comment like starved jackals, it’s interesting to note that the article hasn’t been updated, taken down, or clarified – leading some to speculate that the comment has no substance or, more importantly, an official start-date will be announced shortly (maybe by Nolan at the Hero Complex Film Festival).

Filming for Batman Begins started in March 2004, with the film releasing June 15th 2005. Similarly, shooting for the Dark Knight was expected to begin in March 2007 but was later pushed to April, with the film arriving on July 18th 2008. So, the rumor does appear to have some grounding, based on Nolan’s past scheduling.

That said, it’s unclear how a similar bat-time-line could be affected by Nolan’s work on the upcoming Superman reboot The Man of Steel, which is also slated for a holiday 2012 release. Nolan is listed as a producer on the film – so he’ll at least be somewhat involved in the day-to-day development process of bringing one of the most iconic comic book characters in the world to the big screen – following a poorly received 2006 reboot.

For the time being, we’ll just have to wait for more official announcements – we’re looking at you San Diego Comic Con.

Transformers 3 Villain, Story Details & 3D Confirmation

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a pretty big disappointment last summer. After the first movie debuted in 2007 to launch a massive film franchise and re-ignite Hasbro’s merchandise toylines, we hoped Michael Bay would take the criticisms of his first summer Robot explosion party and improve upon it for the sequel.

Needless to say, our hopes were dashed and we instead were treated to a rushed and convoluted movie which increased on the problems of the first Transformers. Going forward, it’s hard for our expectations on Transformers 3 to sink any lower and Michael Bay seemingly understands this.

For that reason, Bay is admitting to some of the problems of Transformers 2 and is willing to accept some of the criticism, while offering his plan of how to bring back some love for the Cybertronians in TF3.

“I’ll take some of the criticism… It was very hard to put (the sequel) together that quickly after the writers’ strike (of 2007-08).”

The strike certainly explains the scenes with Sam Witwicky’s (Shia LaBeouf) mom getting drugged up on campus and the dog humping shots…
Fixing the Franchise

So, what will Transformers 3 do differently to win back fans and deliver something new for the franchise? According to Bay, there’s no more of the childish forced humor and many characters will be killed off. And when they say characters will die in Transformers 3, they mean no more resurrections (a la Megatron and Optimus Prime).

Michael Bay already informed the world a month ago that the film-ruining characters of Skids and Mudflap (the twins) would not be back for Transformers 3 and that’s a big step forward. But in this latest interview with USA Today, Bay revises what he says about them to, “they’re basically gone.” It seems pretty evident that the characters will only cameo before being quickly killed off. At least we hope that’s the case.

The Story of Transformers 3

The story of Transformers 3 also promises to bring an interesting plot centered around the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States, hinting that there was some alien influence guiding what happened in one of the most notable aspects of the Cold War.

The Villain of Transformers 3

Another tidbit of information was revealed in the USA Today report that may get some of the more hardcore Transformers
fans excited and that’s the news of who the villain of Transformers
3 will be. According to the report, after Michael Bay cursed at how bad The Fallen was as the villain in Revenge of the Fallen, Shockwave will be the feature villain in Transformers 3.

For those who don’t know, Shockwave is a Decepticon whose power rivals that of their leader, Megatron. Unlike the other Decepticons in many ways, Shockwave is both unique in his character traits and visual design. He is more robotic in look, with only one eye and his alternative form is that of a giant cannon instead of an Earth-based disguise.

Shockwave is second in command to Megatron and while he acts in a more more scientific, precise and civil manner compared to the wild beast-like mentality of his allies, he is ruthlessly destructive in combatting Autobots.

As it turns out, Transformers 3 will be coming at us in 3D and this will no doubt be done in post-production (the bad 3D) due to the rushed production schedule.

Shie LaBeouf returns as the star and joining him as his new love interest (replacing Megan Fox) will be Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Most familiar faces will return along with our Cybertronian friends.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Split into Two Films

Summit Entertainment has confirmed the rumor that the final Twilight book will be adapted as two separate films. The news, from their press release:

Summit Entertainment confirmed today that "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will be released as two separate films with the first of the two slated to be released in theatres on November 18, 2011. Academy Award® winner Bill Condon will direct both films starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner along with Billy Burke as Charlie Swan as well as returning members of the Cullen Family including Peter Facinelli as Carlisle, Elizabeth Reaser as Esme, Jackson Rathbone as Jasper, Nikki Reed as Rosalie, Ashley Greene as Alice and Kellan Lutz as Emmett.

The project, based on the fourth novel in author Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, is currently being written by Melissa Rosenberg with Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt and Stephenie Meyer producing. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will start production in the fall.

Clash of the Titans Sequel Shooting Starting next January?

According to the Los Angeles Times, Warner Bros. and production house Legendary Pictures are in talks to start shooting the sequel to Louis Letterier's remake of Clash of the Titans as early as next January with director Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and the upcoming Battle: Los Angeles) as one of the frontrunners to take over the directing chores.

Clash of the Titans has grossed $486.8 million worldwide since opening a little over two months ago with roughly a third of that being in the United States, and like with Guy Ritchie's sequel to Sherlock Holmes, the studio is hoping to strike while the iron is hot, as well as to attain the services of returning star Sam Worthington before he's drawn back in to start filming James Cameron's Avatar Sequel later next year.

The "Clash" sequel will be filmed in 3D rather than converted after-the-fact, but so far, there's been no word whether any of the rest of the surviving cast (or any of the Greek Gods played by Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes et al) will be returning for the sequel.

Fake Trailer Sparks Technotise Adaptation

Heat Vision is reporting that Legendary Pictures is developing a live-action remake of the animated Serbian film, Technotise: Edit and I.

The company has picked up a pitch by Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) who will write the screenplay. Rae Sanchini, who worked with James Cameron on Solaris, Titanic and Strange Days, will produce alongside Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni of Legendary Pictures.

The Serbian movie is set in Belgrade in the year 2074 and centers on a failing art student who decides to get a chip implant to circumvent studying but gets more than she bargained for. You can watch the film's trailer below.

The trade says that Scott Glassgold and Raymond Brothers acquired the remake rights and right after saw a fake trailer for Green Lantern made by Jaron Pitts. The duo, who will executive produce with Kalogridis, hired Pitts to make a trailer for what a possible Technotise movie would look like. You can watch both of those trailers below as well.

Battleship Moves Away from Men in Black III

In early May, Columbia Pictures announced that Men in Black III (AKA "MIIIB") will hit 3D and 2D theaters on May 25, 2012. That's the date that Universal's adaptation of the Hasbro game Battleship was going to open.

Now, Universal has decided to move the Peter Berg-directed film a week earlier on May 18, 2012. Also scheduled for that date is DreamWorks Animation's Madagascar 3, thought that film will be going after a different audience.

The summer of 2012 is shaping up to be one for the record books, with The Avengers, Disney•Pixar's Brave, Star Trek 2, the Spider-Man reboot, Ice Age: Continental Drift and Christopher Nolan's third Batman also coming out.

In other release news today, Dimension Films has moved Piranha 3D a week earlier on August 20th, a date that now has six wide releases (see here). We're guessing one or more will move.

John August to Write Monsterpocalypse

In May, it was reported that DreamWorks was courting Tim Burton to direct a big screen adaptation of the board game Monsterpocalypse.

Heat Vision now reports that John August is in negotiations with the studio to write the film's script. He's worked together with Burton on films such as Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride. The duo are also working on Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie.

The trade says that, while a deal hasn't been made with Burton, talks are ongoing.

The project would be released through DreamWorks' distribution deal with Disney via the Touchstone label.

"Monsterpocalypse" was created by Matt Wilson, who will co-produce the movie.

Tony Gilroy to Write The Bourne Legacy!

Universal Pictures announced today that Tony Gilroy is returning to write the script for The Bourne Legacy, the fourth installment in the Jason Bourne franchise. Gilroy is also writing a "franchise bible." He penned The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley are also back to produce alongside Captivate Entertainment's Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith.

While "The Bourne Legacy" is a book written by Eric Lustabader in Robert Ludlum's "Bourne" series, the film will not be based on it.

Matt Damon has gone on record that he wouldn't reprise the role if director Paul Greengrass is not returning. We'll have to wait and see if this announcement changes Damon's mind.

Fantastic Four Reboot and Next Die Hard Possible Titles

In September of 2009, it was revealed that 20th Century Fox has started developing a reboot of the "Fantastic Four" movie franchise. Akiva Goldsman was hired to produce and Michael Green (upcoming Green Lantern) would write the script.

Now comes word from Ain't It Cool News that the title for the reboot may be Fantastic Four Reborn. A quick look at the WHOIS database of registered domain names reveals that 20th Century Fox has indeed registered FantasticFourReborn.com (it doesn't go anywhere yet).

Last month, we also learned that Skip Woods (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The A-Team) was in talks to write the script for the next "Die Hard" movie. AICN says Fox is looking at naming the fifth installment in the franchise Die Hard 24/7. Looking at the WHOIS database shows that the studio has registered DieHard247.com.

Studios often register multiple domain names for each property to make sure they get what they want, but this is certainly an indicator that these are titles they are considering.
