Nursing Schools in California

There are currently 40 nursing schools in California that are accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACA). Prior to applying for a PhD in Nursing, going either the traditional route or by distance education (online PhD nursing programs), you can earn your prerequisite degree in any number of nursing schools in California. Our spotlight this week is the California University Los Angeles (CULA) School of Nursing, which currently offers an undergraduate degree (BSN) Bachelor of Science in nursing, a Master of Science in nursing for students with or without an RN license. CULA has actually partnered with the University of Michigan in creating the Bridges to Doctoral Program, a cooperative between both schools. The Bridges to the PhD in nursing program applicants must meet the following eligibility profile:

Currently enrolled in the first year of a CSULA MSW or MSN program

US citizenship or permanent resident status

Interest in a career in conducting research on health disparities in Social Work or Nursing

Membership in an underrepresented group, e.g. African America, Hispanic, Asian/ Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders and American Indians

Or Economically Disadvantaged students who have experienced financial hardship as a result of family economic circumstances or demonstrated financial need (based on completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA) OR having a disability.

Minimum Undergraduate GPA of 3.2

Alternatively, if you are not ready or qualify for the Bridges program, the M.S. nursing program at CULA is tailed for students who hold a RN (registered nurse) license and the MSN is for students who do not. The MSN is specifically for students who already hold a BS degree in another discipline and are not licensed RNs. CULA has a small school of nursing, with roughly only 400 undergraduate students and 200 graduate level students. It is recognized by the California Board of Nursing and is accredited through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The following are graduate programs currently offered at the CULA School of Nursing:

Nursing Education

Nursing Administration

Psychological/Mental Health CNS

School Health insurance

CULA offers four graduate nursing specialties including:

Primary and acute adult

Primary child

Family care

Psychological/mental health

Upon graduation, individuals must take and pass specific licensing examinations prior to working as a professional healthcare worker. The pass rate for nurses holding a BSN and sitting for the NCLEX (National Counsel Licensure Examination) was 93% (2010-2011) and is one of the highest ranking pass rates of all nursing schools in California. This represents 82 undergraduate (BSN) students who sat for the exam. Graduate nursing school test scores was also amongst the highest at Graduate student passing scores were also the highest in California, whereby 100% of the 21 individuals who sat for the exam also passed it. The lowest pass rate score was San Joaquin Valley College, in which the pass rate was only 54% in which 76 students sat for the exam. Undoubtedly, this is why this private college is not a member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), whereas CULA is.

Nurses who are not looking to earn a degree, i.e. BSN, MSN, or PhD in Nursing can earn a graduate certificate at CULA in a number of nursing occupations including:

• Acute Care Nurse Practitioner: Adult Specialty Certificate
• Adult Nurse Practitioner Specialty Certificate
• Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program
• Nurse Practitioner: Psychiatric/Mental Health Certificate Program
• Nursing Administration
• Nursing Education Certificate Program
• Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Specialty Certificate
• Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist

Whether you are ready to pursue a PhD in Nursing via the Bridges program, earn your MSN, or complete your BSN, CULA is one of the best nursing schools in California. Many professional nursing holding a MSN consider taking courses to earn a certificate in a specialty which they are currently employed or wish to transfer. Professional certificates are generally comprised of 7 courses. These courses may be transferable to another college program, should you wish to pursue your doctorate in nursing, such as a PhD in Nursing or DNP. It is always best to first consult with admissions to see whether or not these courses will be acceptable by your school.

Online DNP Programs

Highly trained nurses are always in demand in the healthcare industry, and now online DNP programsallow busy RNs to earn an advanced degree from home. Earning a graduate degree in the nursing field will provide you with many new job opportunities at a high salary grade. Individuals who work in this field carry many responsibilities and are essential members of healthcare teams at hospital, medical facilities, and private offices.Becoming a doctor of nursing practice requires high-level study. Many programs will require that you complete a short residency or internship to hone your skills. Unlike the PhD in nursing, this degree is focused on caring for patients. Many individuals who complete this degree will work supervising teams of nurses. They strive to assess and improve care-giving services in medical facilities. As such, the training to earn this degree combines clinical research, advanced practice, and leadership skills training.

For nurses who work full-time and find attending on-campus classes difficult, online nursing programs are a great way to earn a degree. These programs use a combination of lecture format and student participation in online bulletin and discussion boards. Some online programs also utilize a live chat feature or online ‘live’ class sessions to bring students and their professors together throughout the semester. Online programs allow students to work on their assignments at whatever time of day is convenient, with professors setting deadlines for the due dates of assignments and projects.

Almost all DNP programs feature a combination of intense, science-based courses and professional residencies or internships. The purpose of the residency/internship is both to allow nurses hands-on training in their new profession and to provide opportunities for their mentors to rate their leadership skills. This portion of the degree program also provides the chance for student to assess nursing systems in a real world work environment. Some colleges run medical facilities where students can complete their clinical practice, while other students will identify opportunities at facilities that are not directly affiliated with specific schools.

The core curriculum for these programs also focuses on the advanced care of patients. Clinical assessment and diagnosis standards and tools are covered. Individuals in these programs may choose to pick a specialty or focus area within the healthcare field. They will train to work in this field. This training includes completing a residency in the student’s chosen specialty. Many programs also require that students attend two-to-four week intensive sessions during the summer or the regular school year. Students who study online generally have to attend these on-campus programs as well. Many colleges and universities now offer online DNP programs for busy students. Both the University of Arizona College of Nursing and the University of Alabama at Birmingham offer model online programs in this field. Students who attend these universities will complete approximately four years of coursework before they earn their degrees. Because students are not in a traditional campus environment, identifying preceptors for the residency or clinical practice portion of the program is the student’s responsibility. It is important to keep in mind that students who attend non-traditional programs through accredited universities are still eligible for federal student aid.

Nurses who are interested in career advancement but do not have the time to attend traditional on-campus classes may benefit from online DNP programs. These programs allow students who work full-time to study and earn advanced degrees. Individuals who graduate from such programs are in high demand in the medical field and will find many employment opportunities nation-wide.

A PhD in Nursing is a worthy investment as the competition for nurses’ employment has increased more today than in any other decade in the medical and healthcare industry. There are a number of good nursing schools in California where you can earn a graduate degree in nursing. The nursing profession is also tough on the job searching market, because being a nurse is a serious commitment. Public and private employers in the medical and healthcare industry only accept competitive and devoted nurses in their respective rosters. What will put a registered nurse back on track and in demand when out job hunting? Obtaining a PhD in Nursing puts you on edge from all the other Nursing applicants out there.

In the United States alone, nursing schools in California is only second to the largest in New York. However, there are only nine out of forty colleges in California which offer Doctorate in Nursing Practice or DNP programs. DNP programs consist of courses which are directly associated with the field of nursing and contribute to the advancement of the professional nurse holistically.

The DNP program also trains healthcare providers with advanced methods including treatment and diagnosis in approaches similar to a doctor. Those who have completed the program nurture a sense of leadership to other nurses when on the field.

Top requirements for a PhD in Nursing program include a working experience as a nurse in a hospital or any other healthcare setting. Applicants need to have finished a four year degree. All applicants will be required to submit their official records at the time of enrolment and may be generally required to have a master’s degree.

Loma Linda University in California requires a BSN and MSN and takes generally three years to successfully complete the PhD in Nursing program. Loma Linda University’s DNP program is integrated with ethics and Christian Leadership courses designed to provide ethical and quality practices in the field.

University of California, San Francisco’s PhD in Nursing curriculum is designed to develop habits of scholarly approaches and applying them to problems relevant to the field of nursing. Other areas include independent study and dissertation focus for the completion of the program.

AZUSA Pacific University is proud of its PhD in Nursing for interested applicants, as it emphasizes on Health of the Family and Community or International Health, which are both research-based programs designed to prepare its graduates for a life of teaching and academic excellence.

With California State University, interested applicants can choose between Doctor of Nursing (ND) which requires three to five years of study focusing on the role of advance nurse practitioner or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), an emergency program requiring a full time study of three years, intended to prepare its graduates for leadership and managerial positions in research, clinical care delivery and system management.

Fairfield University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice is a clinical doctorate program which is competitive in advanced specialty nursing practice comparable to clinical doctorates in other health care disciplines like pharmacy, physical therapy and medicine. Its focuses include population-level healthcare, leadership, business management, clinical scholarship, policy making and information technology.

The graduate of any PhD in Nursing program will be able to provide excellent care to patients and apply leadership skills among peers and evaluate policies in the medical and healthcare industry. This puts the premium on DNPs who are involved in evaluating and structuring patient care programs, equipping graduates with analytical skills and procedures. Becoming a PhD in Nursing graduate is a challenge which promises professional growth and career satisfaction in the field.

In California, graduates of PhD in Nursing take special licensure examinations before they are allowed to practice at this level. They are also allowed to prescribe drugs after applying and having been approved by the DEA.

Nursing Schools in California

In the United States alone, the number of nursing schools in California is one of the largest, second only to New York, which is number one in the country. If you are only interested in a doctorate nursing degree like the Doctor of Nursing Practice, out of the forty colleges, there are only nine that offer DNP programs in the state of California. The field of nursing is a growing field and the DNP programs will provide courses that are directly connected to this branch of nursing as well as the field of nursing as a whole.

Doctors of Nursing Practice are healthcare providers that provide an advanced level of care. DNPs treat and diagnose, in a manner similar to that of a doctor but without the title of Medical Doctor (MD). Persons who are interested in the DNP programs and live in the state of California desire this role because it balances quality hands on care as well as leadership to other nurses.

Please continue reading for the nine nursing schools in California that offer DNP programs:

Loma Linda University located in Loma Linda, CA
Again, a MSN and BSN are required before you can apply to this university. It generally takes three years to successfully obtain the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. What that is comprised of is 63 units, which is the equivalent to 42 semester units. This program is designed for those individuals who are already working in the field of nursing. The program encompasses two years of classroom coursework and about one year of DNP project implementation. Loma Linda University is unique in that it has three courses that are related to ethics and Christian Leadership, that is designed to help students provide quality, ethical care to those persons in “vulnerable populations”.

Samuel Merritt University located in Oakland, CA
The DNP program at Samuel Merritt University is relatively new in that it was started in the spring of 2011. This school is also designed for working professionals, in that you must currently hold a RN licensure in the state of residence. In order to complete the program, students must complete 36 hours of classroom curriculum training, which should take two years to complete.

University of San Diego located in San Diego, CA
According to U.S. News the University of San Diego is ranked in the top ten percent of Graduate Programs in nursing. This program offers two paths to prospective students and possession of your BSN or MSN will dictate the path. An individual who already has a Master’s in nursing and wants to enroll in the DNP program at this university will only have to take 34 units in order to be eligible for the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. However, this school also offers a post-BSN to DNP program for RNs. This path takes three years of full-time study, however, part-time study is available also. Additionally, the curriculum can range from 78-91 semester credits but where a prospective student will fall in terms of that range will depend on their focus of study.

University of San Francisco located in San Francisco, CA
The program at the University of San Francisco differs in that its primarily focus is geared toward students who already hold their BSN and want to transition to a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. This program requires 82-94 credits and takes about four years to complete. However, for students who already hold a MSN, the credit hours required will be adjusted accordingly. This university uses a hybrid of classroom and online courses, because the expectation is that most of the students in the program are working professionals.

Western University of Health Sciences located in Pomona, CA
Western University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program is primarily a web-based curriculum that is geared toward working professionals and individuals who live in rural areas. However, twice a semester, weekend seminars take place at the Pomona, CA campus. The program is designed toward individuals who already have their MSN, it is a prerequisite for admittance into this school. This program is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The curriculum consists of 30 semester units, which should be completed within two years. Additionally, students will be tested on their capacity for distance learning before
admittance.

Brandman University located in Irvine, CA
Brandman University is a part of the Chapman University system and offers a Bachelors of Nursing to a Doctor of Nursing Practice program. This program is catered to working professionals offers a mix of online and classroom training and eight immersions sessions (several days each) throughout the program to take place at Brandman University’s Irvine, California campus. The curriculum consists of 73 credits to be completed in 2 years full time or 3 years with a combination of part-time and full time study.

California State University (Long Beach, Fullerton, and Los Angeles)
California State University does not currently have a nursing program. The university plans to launch three Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) pilot programs next year, pending approval by their Board of Trustees. You must contact each university for admissions and tentative curriculum requirements.

As you can see, there are many nursing schools in California, you just have to decide which would be better suited for your unique needs.

DNP Programs

Motivated individuals who are currently working in the nursing field can continue in DNP programs to enhance their knowledge of medicine and medical systems, and to advance in the healthcare industry. As a doctor of nursing practice, you will be working as an advanced practice nurse. Many individuals who pursue their DNP wish to specialize in a certain arena of the healthcare industry. California universities estimate that an individual with a DNP degree currently earns about $96,000 per year. The time invested in earning a DNP more than pays off in the long run, both fiscally and in career satisfaction.

Most DNP programs in California require that candidates take the GRE and have experience working as nurses in a hospital or other healthcare setting. Candidates for these programs need to hold a four-year degree. Individuals who wish to pursue a PhD in Nursing, generally granted through the same department which hosts the doctor of nursing practice program, may be required to hold a masters degree at the time they apply for admission. All candidates will be required to submit their undergraduate transcripts.

The majority of programs in this field take four to six years to complete. The course schedules are designed with the working nurse in mind, allowing students to continue working while pursuing their advanced degrees. Many schools offer a hybrid program, with classes offering both on-campus and online sessions to best meet the needs of busy nurses. Generally, students who hold their BSN in Nursing will receive their MSN during their first two years of study and will complete their doctorate-level coursework over the next two to two-and-a-half years.

DNP programs aim to educate nurses for work in an increasingly complex, ever-changing field. As such, candidates in these programs will undergo training in many dimensions of healthcare practice, include ethics, organizational science, and psychosocial study. Experience in these fields is essential to a long-lasting and fruitful career in a profession that is increasingly in the public eye. DNP candidates are trained to manage and evaluate nursing systems and to implement new programs in a variety of healthcare settings. In the workplace, these highly-trained nurses will be responsible for administration and management as well as patient care.

The first few semesters of the program generally focus on understanding the foundations of the field and the various data analysis methods that are used when evaluating nursing systems. Many programs also require a course in scholarly writing during the first few semester of the program. As studies progress, the student completes some combination of courses on leadership, fiscal and organizational management, health policy, and resources management. These courses are taken concurrently with, or followed immediately by, advanced topics in the practice of medicine and drug therapy.

In order to become a doctor of nursing practice, the student will also need to complete supervised practicums during their course of study. These practicums are generally a graduated series in a clinical setting specific to the student’s field of interest. The practicums are an opportunity for the student to apply their knowledge in a clinical setting and to refine and perfect their skills.

The student who successfully graduates as a doctor of nursing practice will be able to provide excellent, in-depth care to patients. He or she will be aware of how local, state, and federal healthcare policy impacts their clients and their workplace. They are trained to understand policy and to advocate for practices and programs which will be of benefit to patients and to the field of healthcare on the whole. Because DNPs will be actively involved in evaluating and designing patient care programs, they are trained in analytical methods and procedures.

In California, doctors of nursing practice take special licensing exams before they can practice at this level. They are also allowed to prescribe drugs and have to apply with the DEA to be able to do so. Universities with DNP programs prepare students for the boards and exams they will need to pass. Programs are designed to meet all the requirements of various licensing agencies so that the graduating student will be able to begin work at this level of nursing after they have completed their coursework.

Becoming a doctor of nursing practice is a challenging process that allows the promising nurse to grow professionally, academically, and personally. DNP programs prepare students for success in this challenging, ever-growing portion of the healthcare industry. Successfully completing study for a DNP affords excellent career opportunities and allows passionate nurses to impact and change the field they love.

Nursing Schools in California

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) lists forty Nursing Schools in California. Of these forty nursing schools, fourteen administer online nursing programs, online nursing degrees, or online nursing classes. Seven award PhD in Nursing degrees and nine award DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) degrees. Most schools award RN to BSN and LVN to BSN degrees, although there are a few that only award graduate degrees MSN and higher.

Most Nursing Schools in California are state schools and fall under the UC (University of California) or CU (California University) systems. There are also a number of Catholic and Protestant parochial nursing schools, and the remaining are secular private schools. All in all, the nursing profession has a lot of scholarship and grant money available, so future nursing students should not be too concerned about tuition costs.

The number of nursing schools in California is the second largest in the United States, just behind New York, which takes first place. Both states offer traditional learning, as well as online nursing programs, online nursing degrees, and online nursing classes. All schools listed are accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). In addition to higher degrees, many of the nursing schools in California also offer CEU, certificate, and post-doctorial nursing degrees. Financial aid is often generous, so look hard and dig deep for scholarship money.
