iPhone gets third-party apps

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, announced in an open letter to the mobile community that Apple iPhone will finally get official third-part application support. The developer's SDK (Software Development Kit) will be ready in February though, as obviously the Apple team is working hard on creating a developer's platform that's open to new applications but at the same time secure in terms of personal data protection and virus-proof.

As expected, the developer's SDK would also be used for creating third-party applications for iPod Touch.

We are glad that Apple senior management has finally got its heads back on and will be opening the platform for developers worldwide. However, we feel that the security restrictions imposed due to the supposed virus/malware threats will be a ingenious way to put cuffs on the developers hands, if you get what we mean. That leaves us rather curious on how things would turn up in the end.

Today, the most heavily equipped Samsung cameraphone finally saw its official announcement. It is no wonder that Samsung G800 has been in the spotlight for a long time before its official appearance as it is among the best phones on the market in terms of multimedia capabilities. It is Samsung's cameraphones flagship featuring a stunning 5 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom. Other camera niceties include wide dynamic range, xenon flash, face detection and, naturally, auto focus. The digicam-like lens cover ensures scratch resistance and also benefits the phone's looks greatly.

If the camera features of Samsung G800 are not enough to impress you by themselves then other features might just do the job. The slider phone comes complete with a 2.4" 262K color display with QVGA resolution that should provide great picture quality. Connectivity options are also quite a lot - GPRS and EDGE, both of class 10 and HSDPA (3.6 Mbps) assure network data transfer, while USB v2.0 and Bluetooth v2.0 should be enough to take care of other connectivity needs.

The tri-band Samsung G800 comes complete with 160MB of internal memory which can be expanded through the microSD card slot. As of now there is no information of the retail price of the handset but we will probably find it out soon as the phone is going to hit European markets no latter than November this year.

I-mate Ultimate 9502 looks like a normal PocketPC phone - until you slide the display and reveal the full QWERTY keyboard beneath. The display itself is large 256K TFT touchscreen with VGA resolution. Other than that, a 3.2 MP autofocus camera and support for the same business applications as in I-mate 8502 are at your disposal. The large QWERTY keyboard and sliding VGA screen come at a cost - the device weighs good 200 g.

I-mate broadens its Ultimate line with the introduction of Ultimate 8502 and Ultimate 9502 - top-gear devices, featuring today's most wanted technologies.

Both devices come with Wi-Fi, built-in GPS receiver, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP support, TV/Audio output slot and QWERTY hardware keyboard. The network support is really "Ultimate", including tri-band HSDPA/HSUPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE. I-mate Ultimate 8502 and 9502 are running on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional OS and rely on the Qualcomm MSM 7200 400 MHz processor for their calculation needs (seen on the HTC TyTN II). The devices are armed with 256 MB ROM and 128 MB RAM as well as a microSD card slot. Regrettably both devices have a 2.5mm earphone jack instead of a 3.5mm one.

Official specifications of the HTC Shift

Although when I saw the first data of the HTC Shift enchanted to me, as much by functionalities as by design, the official specifications that finishes showing me have thrown a little back.

It incorporates two processors, since the Shift has the capacity to start as much under Vista Windows as under Windows Mobile 6, depending on which we need in each situation. MHz is about an Intel Stealey to 800 and a 400 Qualcomm MSM to Mhz. The ram is of 1 GB and the hard disk of 40 GB, having like point against that is mechanic instead of using flash memory.

The screen has a size of 7 inches and a Maxima resolution of 800 xs 480. If we used it with Vista Windows it is compatible with Aero.

The connectivity is guaranteed, as it could not be otherwise with a terminal of this type. Support of GSM cuatribanda, 3G and HSDPA, in addition to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0. Additionally, we found a connector USB 2,0, card reader SD, a camera Web, microphone and loudspeakers and an exit VGA.

The bad thing is its autonomy, single 2 hours working with Vista Windows and its weight of 800 grams, for my a little high considering the small size of the screen. Of the price nothing exact is known, but it is to imagine that it will go up to around the one that had the HTC Advantage when it was put on sale.

Windows Mobile: A version 6.1 for February 2008?

It is rumored at this time on the possibility of an exit for updating a Windows Mobile in its version 6.1.

The software that enables many Smartphone, PocketPC big brands is expected if the noises that are confirmed, get a new version in February next year, under the name of 6.1. The update should be able to allow users access to a "carousel" which allows scrolling windows from left to right lateral manner.
This presentation should be held during the fair 3GSM, which is expected by many followers of mobile technology. As regards the major innovations, they should be present in the Windows Mobile 7 doubtless planned in the second half of 2008.

Sony Ericsson W580 now available

Although it was announced back in March and we saw it passing the FCC hurdle in June, we had to wait for the end of July to get one. Yes, I’m talking about Sony Ericsson mid-range Walkman phone - W580.

According to JAMPBLOG, at this stage Sony Ericsson’s slider music phone is available in small and limited quantities and still waits for a global distribution. Initially, the phone was spotted on sale in Hong Kong for roughly $400, which is quite expensive for a mid-range device. My guess is that the price will go bit down when it starts selling in Europe and other places.

In the meantime, hopefully Sony Ericsson will also start shipping the black version as well — not that I don’t like the white W580, it’s just the black one is more sexy

New OS X vulnerability found: worm released in lab?

Look, we're fine with Apple gloating about the security of OS X in their Mac vs. PC adverts. After all, we have yet to see a large-scale worm released into the Macintosh community. However, the fact that a worm hasn't been released on a Windows-esque scale likely has less to do with Apple's superior coding than the size of their market share, i.e., OS X is a smaller target. That might soon change, however. A vulnerability has reportedly been found and more importantly, exploited by an "independent researcher" known only as "InfoSec Sellout." Apparently, a previously undisclosed vulnerability in the OS X mDNSResponder (which Apple has patched before) allowed Sir Sellout to cobble together a worm dubbed "Rape.osx." InfoSec Sellout claims to have released the worm into a controlled environment thereby infecting a network of about 1,500 OS X systems by nabbing root and dumping a text file as an evidentiary foot print. However, the worm's author claims that it can be broadly weaponised with a payload of choice across both PPC and Intel-class Macs with just a bit more work. InfoSec Sellout will disclose the vulnerability to Apple only after his/her "research is complete" and after an appropriate level of compensation (er, InfoSec Ransom?) received. Dubious as that sounds, for better or worse, it's the way the game's currently played.
