An Igbo scholar, Dr. Samuel Okafor, has made one-time Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, look so small and uneducated by using facts and figures to demolish the claims he made in the controversial August 8 article, “The Bitter Truth About The Igbo”, which set off a storm that almost threatened Igbo-Yoruba relations. In the first part of an article entitled “The Lies of Femi Fani-Kayode”, Okafor, who has a First Class in History from the University of Nigeria Nsukka and then did a Ph.D in Nsukka on scholarship, dismissed Fani-Kayode as a “half-baked intellectual.”
He then proceeded, point by point, to address what he termed “the most reckless amongst the tangle of reckless comments spewed by Femi, a character who with each punch of his keypad stresses his severely unwell conditions of logorrhoea, delusions of enlightenment, history and sociology – amongst others.”
Below are Okafor’s words:
FEMI AND HIS SEVERELY IGNORANT LIES:
•Femi Lies About the Yorubas Being Nigeria’s Earliest Graduates:
From his myopic bubble Femi FaniKayode claims the Yoruba were the first to acquire Western education; the first ever known record of a literate Nigerian in the English Language is the narrative of an Ibo slave who regained his freedom and documented his life history as a slave from the time he was 11 years old in present day Ibo land till the time when he gained his freedom in the middle of the 18 th century. He later married an English woman and had 3 children. He died in 1795. Femi, a basic Google-research will do you good here; check out the name, Equanoh OLAODAH. Further Femi claims that the Yoruba were the first lawyers and doctors in Nigeria. This is again a big falsehood. The first Nigeria doctor was an Effik man Silas G. Dove who obtained a medical degree from France and returned to practise medicine in 1840 in Calabar. This fact can also be verified from historical medical records in Paris.
I would also ask that you google the name BLYDEN – Edward Wilmot BLYDEN – an educated son of free Ibo slaves who by the mid-19th century had acquired sound theological education. He was born in Saint Thomas in 1832. He is one of the founding missionaries that established the Archbishop Vining church in Ikeja. Before the next time you succumb to your long-running battle with logorrhoea, Femi please do some research. What about the third president of a free Liberia – President J JRoyle – again, a man of Ibo descent. Please take some time to do some research so that we can discuss constructively. It is wrong to peddle lies to your people. It is academic fraud to knowingly misrepresent facts just to score cheap points with people who do not have the discipline to do research and accept anything you pour out simply because they say you are well educated.
To again quote the great Nobel Prize Winner in Economics Joseph Stiglitz; Femi fits into the category of third rate students from first rate universities with an inflated sense of self-importance. Let’s go on! Who was the first Nigerian Professor of Mathematics – an Ibo man – Professor Chike Obi – the man who solved Fermat’s Last Theorem. He was followed by another Ibo man, Professor James Ezeilo, Professor of Differentail Calculus and the founder of the Ezeilo Constant. Please do some research on this great Ibo man. He later became the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka and one of the founders of the Nigerian Mathematical Centre. Who was Nigeria’s first Professor of Histroy – Professor Kenneth Dike who published the first account of trade in Nigeria in pre-colonial times. He was also the first African Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
Who was the first Professor of Microbiology – Professor Eni Njoku; he was also the first African Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos. Anatomy and Physiology – Professor Chike Edozien is an Asaba man and current Obi of Asaba. Who was the first Professor of Anatomy at the University College Ibadan? Who was the first Professor of Physics? Professor Okoye, who became a Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960. He was followed by the likes of Professor Alexander Anumalu who has been nominated for the Nobel Prize for Physics three times for his research in Intermediate Quantum Physics. He was also a founding member of the Nigerian Mathematical Centre. Nuclear Physics and Chemistry – again another Ibo man – Professor Frank Ndili who gained a Ph.D in his early ’20s at Cambridge Univesity in Nuclear Physics and Chemistry in the early ’60s.
This young Asaba man had made a First Class in Physics and Mathematics at the then University College Ibadan in the early ’50s. First Professor of Statistics – Professor Adichie who’s research on Non-Parametric Statistics led to new areas in statistical research. What about the first Nigerian Professor of Medicine – Professor Kodilinye – he was appointed a Professor of Medicine at the University of London in 1952. He later became the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka after the war. What about Astronomy – again another Ibo man was the first Professor of Astronomy – please, look up Professor Ntukoju – he was the first to earn a double Ph.D in Astronomy and Mathematics.
Let’s go to the Social Sciences – Demography and statistical research into population studies – again another Ibo man – Professor Okonjo who set up the first Centre for Population Research in Ibadan in the early ’60s. A double Ph.D in Mathematics and Economics. Philosophy – Professor G D Okafor, who became a Professor of Philosophy at the Amherst College USA in 1953. Economics – Dr. Pius Okigbo who became a visiting scholar and Professor of Economics at the University of London in 1954. He is also the first Nigerian Ph.D in Economics. Theology and theological research – Professor Njoku who became the first Nigerian to earn a Ph.D in Theology from Queens University Belfast in Ireland. He was appointed a Professor of Theology at the University College Zambia in 1952.
I am still conducting research in areas such as Geography where it seems a Yoruba man, Professor Mabogunje, was the first Professor. I also am conducting research into who was the first Nigerian Professor of English, Theatre Arts, Languages, Business and Education, Law and Engineering, Computer Technology, etc. Nigerians need to be told the truth and not let the lies that Femi Fani-Kayode has been selling to some ignorant Yoruba who feel that to be the first to see the white man and interact with him means that you are way ahead of other groups. The Ibo as The great Achebe said had within a span of 40 years bridged the gap and even surpassed the Yoruba in education by the ’60s. Many a Yoruba people perpetually indulge in self-deceit: that they were the first to go to school; to be exposed to Western education; that they are academically ahead of other Nigerian cultures of peoples. Another ignorant lie.
As far back as 1495 the Benin Empire maintained a diplomatic presence in Portugal. This strategic relationship did not just stop at a mere mission but extended to areas such as education. Scores of young Benin men were sent out to Portugal to study and lots of them came back with advanced degrees in Medicine, Law and Portuguese Language, to name a few. Indeed, some went with their Yoruba and Ibo slaves who served the sons of the Benin nobility while they studied in Portugal. These are facts that can be verified by the logs kept by ship owners in Portugal from 1494 to 1830. It is kept at the Portuguese Museum of Geographic History in Lisbon. Why then would several Yoruba people peddle all these falsehoods to show that they are ahead educationally in Nigeria?
The true facts from the Federal Office of Statistics on education tell otherwise, showing that 3 Ibo states for the past 12 years have constantly had the largest number of graduates in the country, producing more graduates than Ondo, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo states. These eastern states are Imo, Anambra and Abia. Yet he calls Ibos traders. Indeed, the Igbos dominate because excellence dominates mediocrity – truth. Let me enlighten this falsehood’s mouthpiece even further: before the civil war Ibos controlled and dominated all institutions in the formal sector in Nigeria from the universities to the police to the military to politics:
•The first Black Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan was an Ibo man
•The first Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos was an Ibo man
•The first Nigerian Rector of the then Yaba College of Technology was also an Ibo man
•The police was run by an Ibo IG
•The military as a professional institution was also run by elite-ilk Ibos.
Facts can never be hidden. To be first does not mean you would win the race; let us open up all our institutions and may the best man win. Let us not depend on handouts or privileges but on heard work. Let us compete and give the best positions to our brightest – be it Ibo, Yourba or Fulani, and then we shall see who is the most successful Nigerian. I find it difficult not to respond to some of these long-held lies that are constantly being peddled by Yorubas. One is that the Yoruba have the largest number of professors in the country. I would again ask that we stick to facts and statistical records. The Nigerian Universities Commission has a record of the state with the largest number of professors on their records and as at 2010 that state is Imo State followed by Ondo State and then Anambra State; the next state is Ekiti and then Delta before Kwara State.
I am sure you Yorubas are surprised. When you sit in the South-West do not think others are sleeping but I wish to address another historical fact and that is who were the first Nigerians to receive Western education. It is important that these issues be examined in their historical context and evidence through research be presented for all to examine. I have continued my research for as the great sociologist and father of modern sociology – Emile Durkheim – put it, the definition of a situation is real in its consequence . What this simply means is that one must never allow a perceived falsehood to become one’s reality and by extension individuals who accept a defined position act as though the situation is real and apply themselves in that narrowly defined perspective.
Why is this important to state it is because for long the Yoruba have peddled lies that have almost become accepted as the truth by other Nigerians but it is important that we lay down the facts for others to examine and come to their own conclusion for facts are facts. Let’s go back to education. Historically, Western education resulted as a product of indigenous ethnic groups interacting with the whites through trade. The dominant groups sold slaves, ivory gold and a host of other products to their European counterparts in exchange for finished goods – wine, tobacco, mirrors, etc. The Bini who were the dominant military force from the 15th to the 19th century raided and sold other ethnicities to the Europeans. Top on the list of those they sold were the Yoruba, Ibo and Igala. Various other ethnicities suffered as a result of the Bini military expansion.
And the Benin Kingdom stretched from present-day Benin up to what is now geographically referred to as Republic of Togo. Indeed, the influence of the Benin Empire extended to the banks of the river Niger to present-day Onistha. There are huge Yoruba settlements in the Anioma part of Delta State who fled Yoruba land as a result of these attacks and constant raids. Yes, there are Yoruba people who are currently living with Ibos in the Ibo-speaking part of Delta and they are full citizens of the place no one refers to them as strangers and there is no talk about the Ibos being the host community like we hear from the Governor of Lagos State. But let me return to research. Slaves were moved from the hinterland to the coast and many were sold through Eko to the New World.
These slaves were the first to encounter the Europeans and by extension their way of life – this included education in a Western sense. The Bini King had taken pains to establish a diplomatic presence in Portugal and the relationship developed into areas that extended beyond trade in the late 15th century and lasted well into the early 19th century. Scores of young Bpni youth were sent to Portugal and studied there, coming back with advanced degrees in various disciplines. The next set of people to receive Western education were the slaves themselves. Some of them managed to buy their freedom and develop themselves further. For the Ibo it does not matter who your father is; the question is: Who are you? Who was Obasanjo’s father? Was he the most educated Nigerian? I am sure the answer is no.
Yet this Great Nigeria led this nation two times as a military Head of State and as a civilian President. What about GEJ? Who was his own father? Was he the first Nigerian to go to London? The answer is no. In fact, he had no shoes, yet he is fully in charge. So it does not matter if your father was the first Lawyer or first Doctor in Nigeria but rather what matters is what an individual does with the talents the Almighty has given to him. Let us open up Nigeria for competition. That is the solution to our problems. Those who want privileges keep reminding us that their fathers were the first to go to school in London. Every generation produces its own leaders and champions. Like Dangote who is the biggest employer of labour in Nigeria today and the richest man in Africa.
Was his father the first to go to study in London? Yet he is the master of people whose parents gave them the best. My brothers, the answer to the Nigerian problem is that we should establish a merit-driven society. “I get am before” no be property.

The popular Fuji musician, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, was attacked by a nine-man armed gang in the Ahmadiyya area of Lagos State (Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway) on Monday night.

The deadly gang actually showed Pasuma how porous Nigeria's security is as they drove him round town in his Range Rover SUV for over three hours without encountering any stress on the road. They robbed him of all his money and other valuables...

Pasuma was in company of a friend to perform at a show when he was attacked by the culprits. Obviously he couldn't make it to the show which he has been paid for. Double jeopardy! The gang later dumped him into a bush near Ota, Ogun State, and made away with his vehicle.

Nigeria police say they are investigating the incident and assured that they are on top of the situation.

Note from Black Women of Brazil: Today’s post is really part of the reason for the Black Women of Brazil blog in the first place – the exchange of black experiences across the African Diaspora. It comes courtesy of Amanda Gil of the Belo Crespo Facebook page and the Afrokut blog where it was also posted. Amanda was actually featured in a previous post about the increasing numbers of black Brazilian women going natural. The actual post comes from a friend of hers named Tata Lopes who sent a message describing her hair experiences in the United States with African-American women. Very intriguing insight that Tata shared here. Tata also seems to be taken a bit by surprise to discover that the Brazilian term “cabelo bom” (“good hair”) is also used in the black American community where black pride is supposed to be the standard. Before moving on to the post, I DO feel it necessary to state that Tata’s experience in NO WAY represents ALL Black American women. It simply expresses her personal experiences with a select group of women. The dialogue should be welcomed.

Hi girls!

I would like to make an important point about this issue of ‘hair as a point of identity for African descendant women’. I’ve been in the US for 6 months and this hair debate goes far beyond the question of beauty vs. prejudice. Here, black women rarely wear their natural hair, they wear wigs, hairpieces and braids. One of them told me that the wig comes first, then comes the food and clothes!! They spend a lot on fake hair because they all want to have “good hair”, so it is that the term “good hair” also reigns here! Men pay for their girlfriends’ hair. That is, the richer the man, the more beautiful woman’s wig. It even interferes in relationships, because if a man sees that the girl only wears long and expensive wigs he realizes that he can’t date her because he will not have enough money to pay the hair salon bill!

The African-American woman is proud to be black, even the Protestants dress like Africans to go to church, respect and admire the religions of African origins, all call each other ‘sista’ (sister), are very united and make a point of with coming up with colored hair, flashy clothes and shoes .. and the vast majority only have relationships with black men so that they don’t to have mestiço (mixed) children..

Black women can’t swim and suffer prejudice because of this, but you know why? Because they don’t want to get into the pool or beach so as to not get the wigs and hairpieces that they use get wet. I was very surprised to learn that the men could not touch their hair – this is a rule here –“don’t touch my wig!” even at the time of sex it’s prohibited, they prefer to be on top to prevent the man from touching the wig and messing it up!! Because of this, I hardly see blacks in swimming pools and bathing in the sea … if it’s raining then they don’t even leave the house.

They always stop me in the street to ask where I ‘bought’ my hair or if it’s natural and whenever I say I’m from Brazil they say “awwww, I love the Brazilians they have beautiful hair and the attitude of confident women!”

Girls I know it’s a long text, but I would like that you realize that it’s not just dealing with hair, we must ask ourselves how this prejudiced society prevents us from being happy, to live as ourselves. And even here where there is a strong sense of unity and struggle among black people, ‘good’ hair is prioritized at the expense of much suffering for the black woman. - Source: Afrokut

Millions of viewers tuned into SABC 1 and witnessed the glitz, glam and the pizazz at the 19th Annual MTN South African Music Awards as Toya Delazy and Khuli Chana dominated the evening taking home 3 awards each at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday, 11 May 2013.

For Toya Delazy who had kicked off the evening with a high octane performance alongside rapper Reason, the awards for Newcomer of the Year and Best Pop Album serve as confirmation of her newly found status in the industry after a breakout year in 2012 with her debut hit album, Due Drop Deluxe. Jax Panix scooped the Best Producer award the previous night for his work on Toya’s album.

The outrageously talented Khuli Chana finally had his moment to shine in the spotlight as all the years of hard work finally paid off for the former Motswako protégé as he took home the coveted Best Male Artist, Best Rap Album and Album of the Year awards.

Multi award winning Afro-fusion group Freshlyground scooped what must be fast becoming a familiar statuette for Duo or Group of the Year, further cementing their place as music royalty in South Africa.

The fiercely contested Female Artist of the Year award saw songbird Kelly Khumalo beat off stiff competition from a very talented field.

The almost three hour long show witnessed some unique and iconic collaborations from amongst others Zonke and Kabomo, ChianoSky with DJ Zinhle ft. Busiswa, Bobby van Jaarsveld with Oskido ft. Candy, Zozo & Sangere Superbeat, Desmond & The Tutus with Kabelo, Professor, Sfiso and Khaya ft. Proverb, Donald, Lira and crowd pleasers DJ Vetkuk & Mahoota ft. Dr Malinga & Manqoba amongst others.

The guest presenters on stage to hand over the awards were some of the leading names in the entertainment industry: Rapulana Seiphemo, Tsholo Monedi, Gareth Cliff, Zahara, Loyiso Bala, Tailor, Pearl Thusi, Tumi Morake, Theo Kgosinkwe, Nhlanhla Nciza, Zolisa Xaluva, Glen Lewis, Penny Lebyane, Tumi Morake, Greg Carlin and Thami Mgqolo.

An emotional tribute to artists and other industry players that have passed on during the last year was movingly performed by Bongeziwe Mabandla, Nina Schumann, Steve Dyer, Herbie Tsoaeli and CH2 over a visual montage of these fallen icons.

The Album of the Year medley was one of the major highlights of the star studded night as Khuli Chana, Kelly Khumalo, Maleh, Ntokozo Mbambo and The Muffinz took to the stage and left the over 5 000 strong crowd in rapturous applause.

It was then left to the popular Menzi Ngubane and Sophie Ndaba to close off the night and present the coveted Album of the Year to an utterly surprised Khuli Chana.

HUNDREDS of protesters made up of ex-militants led by former warlord and leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Force (NDVF), Tom Ateke took over the major Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway demanding the resignation of the Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

The protesters, all dressed in white T-shirts with the inscription; ‘EFCC, probe Amaechi’, later converged on the Isaac Boro Park, Port Harcourt, where they sang and danced.

Speaking to newsmen later, spokesman of the protesters, Comrade Martyns Mannah explained that since the governor had called on Rivers people to rise up, they decided to rise to the occasion.

Mannah, who is the Security Secretary of Orashi Youth Movement, said they were tired of Amaechi’s style of administration which had impoverished Rivers people.

“Rivers people can’t stay and watch Amaechi challenge President Goodluck Jonathan who comes from the South-South and desires to contest in 2015. We want Amaechi to tell us the whereabouts of the two jets Odili left behind and real owners of the Bombardier aircraft,” he said.

Embattled Amaechi, whose tenure as chairman, Nigeria’s Governors Forum (NGF) expires tomorrow, had to contend with perceived forces since rumours made the round that he had an ambition to become vice president in 2015.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State police command has banned unauthorised protest marches within the state even as the Assistant Inspector General of Police, in charge of zone 6, Jonathan Johnson, expressed support for police service in the state so far.

But while the police was issuing the ban on protest marches in the state, ex-militants, under the aegis of Rivers People’s Assembly (RPA), were marching through the state capital, calling for the probe of the Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi administration.

Announcing the ban on protest marches in the state, Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, at a joint press briefing with AIG zone 12, Johnson, said the command would no longer tolerate protests without police approval in the state.

According to him, any person or group protesting in the state would be arrested and prosecuted for a breach of the peace.

“We are sounding a note of warning to all those who engage in protests for or against any of the parties involved in the on-going crisis in the state to desist forthwith. A ban has been placed on protests in the state, no matter the type. If you are arrested, you will be prosecuted for attempting to breach public peace,” Mbu warned.

Responding on police operations in the state since the ongoing political crisis in the state commenced, AIG Jonathan, said the state command had operated satisfactorily.

On the perpetual occupation of the Obio/Akpor council secretariat, Johnson said that the police had gone to the council to douse tension, and not to prevent council staff from carrying out their duties.

He said the caretaker committee chairman and the council staff were not prevented from sitting, and noted that there was need for police presence to uphold law and order.

“The CP did not say that they should not sit at the council… The council staff has not said that the police have prevented them from sitting. The police only went there to douse tension,” he said.

The AIG also backed the decision of the Commissioner to withdraw some policemen attached to political office holders, noting that what happened was a replacement of mobile police officers and that of the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), who were formerly attached to politicians with Special Protection Unit (SPU), who he noted are the rightful attachment to political office holders.

“The CP’s action is in order. The Special Protection Unit is responsible for dignitaries who apply for protection. The mobile and CTU are for anti-terrorism and riotous situations. The CP has replaced those he withdrew with SPUs.”

Govs storm Abuja for NGF election
The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) will on Friday hold a strategic meeting to determine the next leader of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum(NGF), which election comes up later in the day on Friday.

Sources close to the NSGF confirmed that the governors would hold their meeting at 11am on Friday, ahead of the main NGF meeting and election which starts at 4pm on Friday.

It was confirmed that the NSGF would dissect the situation within the NGF and take a final stand on the bid to install Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state as the next chairman of NGF.

Sources had told the Nigerian Tribune that some influential members of the NGF perceived to be loyal to President Jonathan had argued the need to zone the position of NGF Chairman to the North, ostensibly on the grounds that there is the need to spread the positions and not to concentrate all key posts in the South South.

Sources had also told the Nigerian Tribune that the argument was strongly canvassed at the last meeting of NGF and that a number of governors had bought into the plan.

The Nigerian Tribune was told that some key figures in the contest had arrived Abuja on Tuesday and that many of them will remain in town till Friday.

Said a source: “I can confirm to you that the Northern States Governors’ Forum will meet at 11 on Friday. The meeting will chart the way forward on the chairmanship of the NGF as it will hold shortly before the main NGF meeting.”

It was confirmed that some key campaigners among the NGF have reached out to the governors to make the Friday election rancour-free and that the option of consensus should be adopted.

With the way things are going, Governor Isa Yuguda could just emerge with a consensus after securing the full backing of the NSGF on Friday. We don’t envisage any rancour,” a source said adding that those canvassing a Rotimi Amaechi/Isa Yuguda clash may be in for an anti-climax as the Rivers state governor may drop his ambition to avert cracks in the NGF.

Ahead of the election some state governors have relocated to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja to strategise.

As of the last count, the trio of Governors Rotimi Amechi, Rivers (incumbent Chairman) Isa Yuguda of Bauchi and Ibrahim Shema of Kastina are said to be in the race.
While the presidency was said to have deployed its arsenals to the field to ensure the defeat of Governor Amaechi because of his rumoured Presidential ambition in 2015 and to work for the victory of either Governor Yuguda or Shema, a good number of the governors from the opposition and few from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), were said to have vowed to ensure the return of Amaechi to office.

It was also gathered that there were underground moves to prevail on most of the governors to settle for a consensus candidate among the three candidates but which had been reportedly turned down mostly by the opposition governors as they saw it as an attempt to further the Presidential ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

Governor Amaechi who has been having running battles with the PDP and the Presidency on all fronts in the recent time had vowed to stand in for reelection as the Chairman of the the Forum and expressed optimism that he would be at the polls based on supports from his colleagues.

FG reads riot act to 100 private jet owners
Eleven years after the national civil aviation policy was last reviewed, the Federal Government on Wednesday came down hard on the over 100 private jet owners in the country, insisting that strict adherence to payment of appropriate levies would no longer be compromised.
Any private jet owner who uses it for commercial purposes would also be sanctioned.
Aviation Minister, Mrs. Stella Oduah, who spoke after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, said: “Are they (private jet owners) paying what they are supposed to pay? The response is no, they are not, but we want to make sure that they pay what they are supposed to pay. These are part of what the policy is addressing. We want to make sure that private jets are private jets and commercial jets are commercial jets and the owners will operate within the boxes they are meant to operate so we dont want to overcharge anyone, we don’t want to undercharge, we want to do what is global standards.
“We had to also revise the policy to ensure that safety is given optimum importance in the way we do things. Definitely, technology involved in using the airports has changed and so, you can see it is very important that we enhance the technology that we have within our airports and our airports facilities and so, several of these was the essence in which we had to quickly review our aviation policy.
“When we talk about general aviation, we are talking about the private jets. As of today, we have about a hundred of them and we also have to highlight passengers Bill of Right. What that means is that all passengers rights are being protected and at the same time, the rights of the airline operators should be protected as well so that there is no conflict between passengers and operators.

Court restrains Rivers CP from arresting Speaker, Chief of Staff
A Port Harcourt High Court has issued an interim order restraining the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, from arresting the Chief of Staff, Rivers state Government House, Tony Okocha and the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Otelemaba Dan-Amachree.
Justice Adolphus Enebele gave the interim order following an exparte motion brought by the chief of staff and the Speaker.
The commissioner of Police had invited the Chief of Staff and the Speaker for questioning over comments they made at different times, bordering on alleged assassination plot on political office holders in the state, including Governor Amaechi, and yet another plot by some politicians in the state to cause mayhem in the state.
Justice Enebeli ordered the commissioner of police to stay further actions on the investigation of the Speaker and the chief of staff pending the determination of the application before the court.
Counsel for the chief of staff, Vincent Uchendu, told the court that the invitation by the commissioner of police is an attempt to further violate the fundamental human right of the chief of staff and the speaker.
He said his client has become apprehensive and insecured following the withdrawal of his security details by the police.
The counsel for the speaker Emenike Ebete expressed doubt on the ability of the commissioner of police to be fair in the investigation of the speaker and the chief of staff.
He accused the commissioner of police of bias in the handling of security situation in the state.
The case has been adjourned till June 3rd 2013 for motion on notice.

Alhaji Modu Sheriff, the governor of Borno State, is one of the eight governors who are seeking re-election, having come to office four years ago. Others are Bukola Saraki (Kwara), Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Olusegun Agagu (Ondo), Gbenga Daniel (Ogun), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano) and Danjuma Goje (Gombe). By no co-incidence, they all defeated incumbents to win. Is it nemesis time?

Bahiru Azeez was posted to Lagos as Commissioner of Police 48 hours after Udom Ekpoudom replaced the erstwhile commissioner, Emmanuel Adebayo. That makes three Police Commissioners in three days, probably a world record. The Action Congress is alleging that it is part of a plot by the PDP to rig the election in the state. In 2003, all police commissioners in the South-west, save Lagos, were re-deployed on the eve of elections and PDP captured all the states, save Lagos. Young Arabamen, then Police Commissioner, was retired after the elections, purportedly for not “capturing” Lagos for PDP.

Coca-cola is nothing, compared to the popularity of Ahmed Yusuf in Taraba State, according to the man himself. “What I believe is that my name is a brand in Taraba,” the AC governorship candidate told a newspaper. “I do not need to advertise myself. Everybody in Taraba knows me. I’m more popular than Coca-cola.” Watch this space next week.

Debates have been more prominent in these elections than in the past. In Lagos State alone, governorship candidates participated in several rounds of debate both on radio and TV. The effectiveness of debates as a campaign strategy is very hard to gauge because of the lack of a reliable and independent feedback mechanism, but it is thought that Jimi Agbaje (DPA) and Babatunde Fashola (AC) won many Lagosians over with their performance. Femi Pedro also got good ratings. Musiliu Obanikoro (PDP) failed to turn up for a couple of shows, fearing that fairness was not guaranteed because of the suspected involvement of the Lagos government. The Nation newspaper organised its own debates for candidates in the South-west, possibly the first by a newspaper in Nigeria.

Extension of tenure, so called, was not granted to two governors: Peter Obi of Anambra and Rashidi Ladoja of Oyo. Obi is still at an appeal court to seek interpretation of Section 180 (2) of the 1999 Constitution on his tenure, having been sworn in only a year ago for what should be a four-year term after fighting a three-year legal battle. An attempt by the Anambra State government to fast-track the case by going directly to the Supreme Court failed on technical grounds. Ladoja’s case was thrown out because even though he was illegally impeached and was out of power for nine months, the court ruled that since his deputy held fort in his absence, he had no case.

For voters who expect to be at the polling unit to know to the scores of their candidates after voting on Saturday, they may be disappointed by the pronouncement of INEC that they should leave the polling station immediately after voting. According to the INEC chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu, the directive was intended to protect polling officials from being intimidated by voters. Loitering around the polling station is not allowed by the Electoral Act, he said, while warning governors and top government officials that they face prosecution if they are seen at collation centres.

Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, has endorsed another candidate—this time, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the AC governorship flagbearer in Edo State. “For more than seven years, Adams Oshimhole led the labour against the obnoxious and dehumanising policies of the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration. He called out the people in several strikes against fuel price increase… by this singular feat of courage and masses-oriented passion and focus, he endeared himself to the toiling people of Nigeria, including the workers,” he said.

Have our women indeed arrived? The country is yet to elect its first female governor, and no mainstream party has fielded a female governorship candidate. Apart from Virgy Etiaba, who is flying the flag of APGA in Anambra by default (INEC refused to substitute her name with Peter Obi’s, citing a court injunction), no party that currently controls at least one state in the federation is fielding any female governorship candidate. However, there are many running mates who are women—and perhaps potential governors in the future.

Indictment has become a key word in the electoral vocabulary in Nigeria for the first time. There have been indictments in the past, but it has never been an issue in election year as it has been this year. This was probably so because of the Atiku case and the EFCC advisory. In many states, governorship candidates were dropped because of “indictment”. Alhaji Rabiu Kwakwanso, former governor of Kano, was a victim, having been indicted by his successor about three years ago. In Oyo, Adebayo Alao-Akala (PDP) has been indicted but INEC has retained his name on the list because, according to the commission, the indictment came late in the day.

Justice Roseline Ukeje of the Federal High Court, Abuja, ruled on Tuesday that on no account should INEC postpone the general elections following the death of Adebayo Adefarati, the former presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy. It may be no more than an academic ruling, since AD had already substituted Adefarati with Pere Ajunwa, but it sets a precedent on the contentious provision in the Electoral Act 2006 which allows for the postponement of elections in the case of the death of a candidate. “I hold that Section 37 (1) of the Act is in clear and brazen contradiction of the constitution,” she ruled.

Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki (PDP), will face a lesser number of opponents with the decision of 12 parties to endorse the candidature of Gbenga Olawepo (DPP). Chief Cornelius Adebayo, former governor of the state and Minister of Transportation, chaired an exercise where the candidature of Olawepo was endorsed. Accord Party’s candidate, Chief Theophilus Bamigboye, has kicked against the endorsement. The three main contenders for governorship, meanwhile, will be Saraki, Olawepo and Makanjuola Ajadi (AC).

Like in previous elections, local and foreign observers are expected to “monitor” the elections, but unlike in the past, foreign observers have declared the Niger Delta a no-go area. This is not unrelated to the spate of kidnapping of foreigners in the region by militants agitating for control of the oil resources. Foreign observers were very critical of the 2003 elections, perhaps influencing the decision of INEC to exclude “monitors” from these elections. The commission eventually clarified its position, saying only observers and not “monitors” will be accredited, meaning, in some sense, that the sovereignty of Nigeria would not be compromised. Thousands of observers, both local and foreign, will monitor the elections, nevertheless.

Most incumbents are not running for re-election, but while some have served their constitutional two terms, others are out of the race not by choice. In Ekiti, the state of emergency led to the suspension of Governor Ayo Fayose (PDP), which effectively ruled him out of running for another term. In Anambra, INEC rejected the candidature of Peter Obi (APGA) based on a court injunction. Goodluck Jonathan (PDP) is the presidential running mate, thereby leaving his position as incumbent governor of Bayelsa. In Oyo, the PDP did not offer Rashidi Ladoja a return ticket.

No surprises are expected in states like Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Niger, Kogi, Kwara and Delta, where ruling parties are expected to retain their governorship seats. However, pundits are predicting “upsets” in a number of states. One is Edo, where Adams Oshiomhole (AC) is expected to torpedo the traditional “fix it” power of Chief Tony Anenih, the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees. Anenih’s candidate, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, is considered not strong enough to continue PDP’s reign in the state. In Ekiti, the odds are very tight, but indications are that Dr. Kayode Fayemi (AC) will make a good showing against an equally formidable Dr. Segun Oni (PDP). In Ondo, Dr. Rahman Mimiko (LP) is highly rated to unseat the incumbent, Dr. Olusegun Agagu (PDP). Nasarawa State has always voted PDP, but Solomon Ewuga (ANPP) has gathered momentum in the last few weeks and may be in a good position to upset Aliyu Doma (PDP). Kashim Ibrahim-Imam (PDP) is very popular in the big cities in Borno, and he is up against an incumbent who has always won elections and who has villagers on his side. A win for Ibrahim-Imam will be considered an upset.

Only in Imo State has a governorship candidate been expelled from a party in the history of Nigeria. The ruling PDP has, rather than field Ifeanyi Araraume, as its governorship candidate—following Supreme Court’s ruling nullifying his substitution with Charles Ugwuh—decided that it would forfeit the state by not fielding a candidate at all. Araraume had dragged his party to court for substituting his name and had won up to the Supreme Court level. However, the PDP insists he is not a credible candidate and since it was too late to take any other decision, it has decided to avoid obeying the Supreme Court judgment by forfeiting the state altogether. Questions are still being asked on the legality of PDP’s action; litigations are expected to continue long after the elections. Chief Martin Agbaso (APGA) is expected to be the major beneficiary of this decision because of the strong position of the party in the state. Chief Ikedi Ohakim (PPA) is also in contention.

Peter Obi, the governor of Anambra State, may turn out to be the man who has fought most legal battles in the political history of Nigeria. In 2003, he was believed to have won the election, but INEC gave it to Dr. Chris Ngige. Obi went to the Election Petition Tribunal and successfully proved his case. Ngige appealed and lost. In March 2006, Obi was sworn in as governor. He was impeached in November 2006. He went to court and was restored to his seat. His attempt to run for governorship was scuttled by a controversial court ruling secured by Chief Chekwas Okorie, the factional leader of APGA. All other APGA candidates were cleared to run by INEC except Obi, whereas the injunction secured by Okorie was supposed to cover all. It was interpreted that Anambra’s case had to be special for reasons other than the court injunction. Obi is still in court over his tenure. If the court rules in his favour for a full four-year term, tomorrow’s election in Anambra may be declared null and void and of no effect. However, if Obi’s cases are not completed by May 29, he will most certainly hit a dead end.

Quite a number of opinion polls emerged during the electioneering process, each with varying levels of credibility and acceptance. THISDAY, which pioneered the polls in Nigeria, has predicted victory for the PDP most states. The poll has been criticised for being limited by the choice of sample population through mobile phones, although it is acknowledged that it substantially represents the realties. Guardian also did its own polls, which conform substantially with THISDAY’s, although it was criticised for being limited to the state capitals. Dissatisfied with the polls, Governor Orji Uzor Kalu, presidential candidate and funder of Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), commissioned a company that calls itself Galaxy Polls, to conduct one. Not unexpectedly, the poll predicted that Kalu’s party will sweep the polls in 14 states, followed by ANPP’s nine, PDP’s six, AC’s five and DPP’s two. Some of the states to be won by PPA include Lagos, Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, Delta and Bayelsa.

Remember Gbenga Aluko? He was the Senator who went down with Senator Chuba Okadigbo in the Senator in 2001 over accusations of impropriety in the award of contracts in the Upper Chamber. He is also the son of foremost economist, Professor Sam Aluko, who served as Chief Economic Adviser to General Sani Abacha. Gbenga was the only PDP candidate to win a Senate seat in the South-west in 1999. He fizzled out since the Senate scandals, but is in the news again. He is the governorship candidate of Labour Party in Ekiti State. He has promised to include permanent secretaries and directors in the Cabinet if he wins the elections.

Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, the governorship candidate of ANPP in Lagos State, has reportedly stepped down for Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the AC candidate, in the spirit of the AC/ANPP alliance. It is not yet confirmed. The much-trumpeted AC/ANPP alliance has, however, not fully taken off. It is projected that if the alliance works in Ogun State, it can defeat the PDP. In Katsina, Benue and Taraba, for instance, the alliance can uproot the PDP from the respective government houses. There are prospects that in Oyo State, a compromise might be reached. In 1999, the AD/APP alliance produced a joint presidential candidate in Chief Olu Falae, but it did not work in the governorship polls. In 2003, AD did not field a candidate in the presidential election in order to support the candidature of President Olusegun Obasanjo (PDP).

To prevent violence during the elections, reports suggest that the federal government is planning to deploy troops to volatile states. Troops’ involvement in the polls is nothing new, but their neutrality is often a subject of controversy. Opposition parties, like the AC, have criticised the government for planning to deploy troops. They believe it is a ploy to use maximum force to cow people into accepting whatever results are declared by INEC. Accusations of plans to rig have been freely traded by parties, and most of the accusing fingers have been expectedly pointed at the ruling PDP. They allege that the PDP is manipulating INEC in order to achieve pre-determined results.

Unusually, the federal government declared yesterday and today as public holidays, ostensibly in preparation for the elections this weekend. However, political meanings have been read into it. One, Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s case was to come up at the Supreme Court yesterday. The holiday technically put the case on hold until next week. Two, the holiday was also interpreted as an attempt to catch opposition politicians unawares as they would not be able to withdraw money to prosecute the elections this weekend. Meanwhile, PDP has reportedly made adequate financial provisions to prosecute it own electioneering for this weekend. This is a classic example of how state power can be used to deal with the opposition in a developing country where economic productivity can be sacrificed on the altar of politics.

Victory for Andy Uba in Anambra State will bring to an end the four-year-old crisis that has rocked the state, starting with the attempt by his younger brother, Chris, to unseat the former governor, Dr. Chris Ngige. The younger Uba had been the face of the crisis for a long time and, some will say, was enjoying the support of his elder brother who was working with the president. The violence that broke out and the sustained nature of the crisis were also attributed to the Ubas. However, as Andy prepared for the governorship, he tried to distance himself from his younger brother and has successfully schemed Chris out of the party. Igwe Igwebuike Ofuebe, the deputy chairman of Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers, has attributed his support for Uba to the relationship he enjoys with the president. “Each time I worship at the Villa [State House] chapel, I notice the way Obasanjo relates with our son [Andy]. It is only right for us in Anambra to honour this prophet on April 14 by electing him governor,” he said.

Will Lamidi Adedibu, the strongman of Ibadan politics, be alive to enjoy the fruits of his labour in this year’s electioneering? This was the question on many lips since reports filtered that he was critically ill. It has since emerged that he is recovering from whatever ailment struck him and he is still campaigning for his anointed candidate, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, the current deputy governor. The governor, Rashidi Ladoja, is yet to openly endorse any candidate, but reports indicate that Labour Party’s Lamidi Apapa is getting the attention of his aides and supporters. Apapa is former president of NUPENG and NLC in the state.

Xenophobia is “excessive fear of foreigners”, in this case fear of minorities as far as the elections are concerned. In most states of the federation, the majority ethnic groups often dominate governorships and clamour for power shift is often ignored. In Delta and Edo States, this is not the case. The PDP is fielding Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan from the very minority Itsekiri group. If he wins, it will become a major statement in the history of Nigerian politics. In Edo, the dominant Binis have voluntarily allowed the two leading parties to field candidates from other ethnic groups. In other states like Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kogi, Rivers and Benue, the status quo remains.

Yen Karalee, a group in Gombe State, has been fingered as the militants being employed by one of the candidates. In other states, it is OPC, NURTW and other groups that carry innocuous names that are accused of being used as thugs.

Zamfara is the only state where a two-term deputy has got the nod of the governor to stand for election. Alhaji Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi is the ANPP candidate who is highly favoured to succeed Alhaji Sani Yarima, the man who controversially introduced the criminal aspect of Shari’a. Etiaba is running by default in Anambra.
