2013-09-30T09:49:00.002-07:00

A flesh-eating drug has hit U.S. streets after first being discovered in Russia a decade ago.

Krokodil, Russian for “crocodile,” is a street drug used as a cheap substitute for heroin. The drug is referred to as krokodil because it causes sores, tissue damage and rough, scale-like appearance on the skin, ABC NEWS reported.

Two cases involving the drug that surfaced at the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix are alarming anti-drug advocates and medical personnel who fear use of krokodil might spread.

Tibetan lights self on fire at anti-China protest

2012-03-28T09:35:00.004-07:00

Tibetan exile lit himself on fire and ran shouting through a protest in the Indian capital Monday, just ahead of a visit by China's president and following self-immolations in the Himalayan region against Beijing's rule.

The protester apparently had doused himself with something highly flammable and was engulfed in flames when he ran past the podium where speakers were criticizing China and the visit by President Hu Jintao.

Fellow activists beat out the flames with Tibetan flags and poured water onto him. He was on fire perhaps less than two minutes, but some of his clothing disintegrated and his skin was mottled with black, burned patches by the time he was driven to a hospital.

The man, identified as Jampa Yeshi, sustained burns on 85 percent of his body and his condition was critical, a senior police officer said.

US man receives 'most extensive face transplant'

2012-03-28T09:30:00.001-07:00

Richard Lee Norris of Hillsville, Virginia, received a full face transplant including jaws, teeth, and tongue at the University of Maryland Medical Centre in a marathon 36-hour operation.

The 37-year-old was severely injured in a gun accident in 1997 in which he lost his nose and lips and was left with limited mouth movement.

Mr Norris underwent multiple life-saving and reconstructive operations. However, he has spent the past 15 years living as a recluse and wore a mask on the rare occasions he ventured outside.

The new face came from an anonymous donor whose organs were also used to save the lives of five other people. Four of the organ transplants took place over the course of two days at the hospital.

US doctors have carried out what they say is "the most extensive full face transplant" to date
