Elmore Leonard (1925-2013)

2013-08-27T09:33:00.001+08:00

About 10 years ago, Mr. Leonard's book Rum Punch started my obsession with crime fiction. One of my literary heroes. Rest in peace, Dutch! You will be missed...

Kirby. Jack Kirby.

2013-06-25T17:24:00.001+08:00

My good buddy, Dark Chapel (yes, that is his real name) big boss of the very cool, very punk komix-antho Silent Sanctum Manga! (or SSM!) and I started a Jack Kirby tribute blog. Because we love the guy. Here is my first illustration...

Nick Fury

Ray Harryhausen (1920 - 2013)

2013-05-20T13:40:00.000+08:00

Movies like Clash of the Titans (the original one, not the poop-filled remake), Jason & The Argonauts and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad were a huge part of my childhood. I used to watch those movies at least once a year when I was around 5-10 years old. They still remain as some of my favorite movies of all time...

Thanks for the memories, Mr. Harryhausen! Rest in peace.

Props!

I have never been or ever will be a Superman fan. I just do not "get" him. But I do love fictional super powered beings & I do believe most, if not all fictional super powered beings are based on or inspired by him. So here's my tribute to the Man of Steel & his creators, Joe Shuster & Jerry Siegel. (Belated) Happy 75th Anniversary!

The black & white version... here. :)

Suicide Squid

2013-03-11T13:12:00.000+08:00

One day, Josel Nicolas and I were discussing the merits of John Ostrander's Suicide Squad run, which we haven't read (hahahaha!) & Micheal Fiffe's superhero comic Copra. When suddenly, Josel blurted out... "SUICIDE SQUID!" & suggested I create a character out of the name. So after taking a few days off of drawing Attack Bear pages. Here he is...

Design influenced by Rob Liefeld (because a human / squid hybrid needs them shoulder pads & pouches) & Fiffe's stuff. Tried spoofing those U.S. Army - Army of One ads that appeared in early 2000 / mid-2000 comic books. This guy will be appearing soon in the Yeti Crab comic...

First comic project for the year is...

2013-02-27T10:03:00.000+08:00

DONE! Wooo!

My first long (yet still short) Yeti Crab story is finally finished. Very very excited see the thing screen printed. Will be making a full length Yeti Crab comic before the year ends. Check out pages 1 & 2 again, now with words!

Also, here are some WIP logos for the upcoming comics...

Off to finish Attack Bear!

2013-02-19T09:06:00.001+08:00

I started a webcomic-tumblr thing about the funky cloud formations over Manila Bay / Malate. Click the image bellow to go to the site & if you have a tumblr account please follow... Clouds are awesome!

The Origin of the Yeti Crab

2013-01-10T09:51:00.000+08:00

Almost done with my 7-page komix contribution to a screen-printed komix anthology out first quarter of this year. The short komik is about the origin of the Yeti Crab. A character I created after seeing a picture of an actual yeti crab (MOST AWESOME CRUSTACEAN EVER!). Originally planned to just do 3 to 4 panel strips with YC & use them as fillers for my auto-bio comix, ???. The first story that I proposed for the anthology got dropped since the page count was cut down. Thankfully, the curator of the anthology suggested a YC story. Brilliant idea, the problem was I didn't have any long YC stories planned out. So how was I able to conjure up this story / long term plans for YC? By listening to the old The Shadow radio show (voiced by Orson Welles!). I love the pulps, The Phantom, Doc Savage, Conan. Enigmatic heroes, crazy stereotypical villains, world spanning high adventure, weird science. Add some Tintin by Hergé, some superhero styled origin and my fascination with cryptids. This is what you get...

Sorry, no dialogue / narration yet. I have 1 more page to ink then finish off the lettering. Hope you get the komix when it comes out.

P.S. - Don't know the title of the anthology yet but it'll feature local komix peeps such as... Josel Nicolas, Dark Chaps (of SSM!), Trizha Ko, Mica Agregado & some other guys, i think.

P.P.S. - HAPPY NEW YEAR!

More Komix!

2012-12-13T16:33:00.000+08:00

For a screen printed zine project thing... Had to park my orginal comic for the project since it exceeded the new page count.

KOMIX!

2012-12-06T17:31:00.000+08:00

Better Living Through Xeroxography is tomorrow! None of the stuff that I planned to release this year got done... No Baro Investigations. No ???#3. No story for QBCCC#3. No Dinoborg. I was only able to finish 10 pages of Attack Bear#1 (see poster thing above). Even the initial plan for the screen printed zine got changed, so I'm shelving the Sting/Johnny Cash song cover comic for the meantime.

Anyway, I'll still be at BLTX tomorrow... Selling reprints of ???#1 (with new-ish contents) & #2.

???#1 & ???#2

Here are some previous of stuff to come next year...

Cataplexy for QBCCC#4 with Jim Faustino

A Dinoborg Prelude with Josel Nicolas

Some pages for ???#3

Some pages from Attack Bear#1

See you tomorrow!

BLTX-Mas!

2012-11-06T16:42:00.001+08:00

A panel from strip in ???#3, which will hopefully come out at BLTX this December 7. Still have a lot of pages to pencil...

Pulp

2012-10-29T23:13:00.002+08:00

I love pulp heroes! They are a combination of 2 things that I love... noir / crime stories & superheroes. I still listen to my Shadow radio drama recordings by Orson Welles from time to time. They are awesome! Didn't like the movie. I have yet to read the comics. Heard some good things about the Howard Chaykin run.

The Shadow knows!

I loved the Phantom strips in the Sunday paper (I think the strip is still being published in one of the local papers). Also, he was the only thing that I loved about the politically correct cartoon, Defenders of the Earth. The Phantom 2040 cartoon was pretty good, too.

The Ghost Who Walks!

Melon #2

Thanks to the Happy Lockjaw peeps for inviting me again to contribute to their pinup zine. Please do get a copy at Komikon this Saturday. HENSHIN!

Dinner...

2012-10-24T11:30:00.000+08:00

My wife wasn't feeling well last weekend. So I was tasked to cook food. She told me to stop cooking eggs every meal. Thus, I was forced to open a can of Tuna Loaf...

2012-10-22T13:18:00.001+08:00

Working on an 10-page silent comic for a silk screened zine project. This is a cover of a Sting song covered by Johnny Cash :)

2012-10-19T08:46:00.002+08:00

I did the exact same thing to my wife a week ago. Having only 2 hours of sleep does crazy things to a person...

League Portraits (Part 1)

2012-10-12T09:34:00.000+08:00

Finished reading The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen a few weeks ago. Only Alan Moore could pull off the idea of putting together these "heroes" of old literature. Which was probably the only thing that was interesting with Volume 1. The plot was pretty underwhelming. But it does get better with Volume 2. Some brush pen fun with the League...

Captain Nemo

Allan Quatermain

More portraits soon...

Attack Bear Vs. Cthulhu

2012-10-04T15:45:00.000+08:00

A 6 or maybe 8 page zine, chronicling the first comic book adventure of Attack Bear. Weeeee! This will be for a exhibit / project thing that will hopefully push thru.

2012-10-01T17:53:00.002+08:00

This happens very often... potato chips, I abhor thee!

Moral of the story: I should not be doing the grocery shopping.

A baby / dad / baby poop strip! The first of many...

Moral of the story: Babies are awesome. They are an awesome gift from God. Having your own baby is even more awesome. Everything they do is awesome.
