meaning) in the past few days watching the storms from the shelter of the verandah. But a cautionary word of warning comes from the past.

Sydney Morning Herald
22 Dec 1936

GIRL KILLED.

GOSFORD, Monday.

Te-tulla Lammi, aged five, was struck by lightning and killed during a violent storm at Kulnura, 20 miles north-west of Gosford, this afternoon.
The child's father, August Lammi, a Finnish orchardist, was sitting on his verandah with his three children, when the lightning struck, killing the child and rendering the father and another child unconscious.
When the father recovered consciousness he found his daughter's clothing smouldering. He sent at once for assistance, and a message was sent to Gosford. The Gosford District Ambulance, accompanied by a doctor and a constable, hurried to Kulnura.
The doctor found that the child's death had been practically instantaneous.
The storm lasted only ten minutes, and was confined to a small area. It was accompanied by torrential rain.

FATAL LIGHTNING FLASH.

Father's Effort to Revive Child.
GOSFORD, Tuesday.

A verdict of accidental death was returned by Mr. W. E. Kirkness, District Coroner, this afternoon, following an inquiry Into the death of Te-tulla Lammi, aged 5, the daughter of August Lammi orchardlst, at Kulnura yesterday afternoon. The child, with her father and her brother, Homhe, were struck by lightning. Father and son were rendered unconscious.
The father told the Coroner that when he recovered he dipped the boy in a tub of water and did the same thing with his daughter.
Neighbours also endeavoured to revive the girl, but she died a few minutes before the arrival of a doctor with the police and an ambulance from Gosford, 25 miles distant.
Frederick Leslie Young, orchardist, who tried for three quarters of an hour to revive the child, said it was deplorable that there was no oxygen apparatus in the district. Had one been rushed out, the child's life might have been saved.

Peonies from heaven.

<img style="display:block; to envision its future; its opportunities, and the diversity of farming enterprises made possible through research. With rapid demographic change in the district and land use pressure from extractive industries, we need to be proactive in preserving our options for a diverse, vital and sustainable farming future for the district.

Some words about farming here in the past.

Sydney Morning Herald
District Items
Thursday 17 march 1910

GOSFORD.-Regarding the agitation to have the unoccupied Crown lands round about Gosford thrown open for settlement, the Minister for Lands states that the matter has been forwarded to the district surveyor at Maitland for report. There are thousands of acres within a few miles radius of Gosford, which, if thrown open for settlement would be taken up by fruitgrowers, etc.
Satisfactory progress has been made by the new settlers who have taken up land on Mangrove Mountain for fruitgrowing. The passion vine thrives particularly well in this locality, and thc fruit has commanded the very highest price in the Sydney market. Mr W. J. Black, whose success was the means of bringing other settlers to the district, has 20 acres cultivated. Including 8 acres of passionfruit. The balance of his land is under apple and citrus fruit, and his orchard looks very well indeed. Mr. Kelynack, who started a year ago, has four acres under passions, and Mr. H. J. Gates has a similar area planted with the same kind of fruit. Balony Bros.
have just finished planting out two acres of fruit, and are clearing more land. Mr. W. Cowlishaw has 13 acres under passion vines, and intends clearing more land with the object of growing lucerne. Cr. Tange and Messrs. Best and Bennett have also thriving orchards. There are at present 66 settlers on tho mountain, and others have applied for living areas. It has been proved beyond question that fruit-growing In that part of the Gosford district can be successfully carried out.

This season on the roads

Driving during the holiday season in 1924 had much in common with now. Holiday crowds, determination to get to the destination at all costs, and the below standard condition of the road at Mangrove Mountain.

From The Sydney Morning Herald: Wednesday 31 December 1924

NEWCASTLE-SYDNEY RECORD. |

The record from Newcastle to Sydney, via Gosford, Mangrove Mountain, and Wiseman's Ferry seems to attract as much attention from motorists this summer as the interstate record did last year. Although less than one-third the distance, the inter-city record is still a trying one, as the road from Gosford right through to Wiseman's Ferry, and again on the notorious big hill from the Hawkesbury River to M'Grath's Hill, on the Windsor-road, is loose, rough, and abounds in sharp turns, many miles of it also being so narrow as to make it difficult to pass another vehicle.
Already some fine performances have been recorded on this road, the latest, being to the credit of Mr. Fred Withers, who, accompanied by Mr. B. Craig, on Christmas Day left Newcastle at 4.11 a.m., in an Essex six car, and after a strenuous drive reached Sydney G.P.O. at 7.50.30 a.m., covering the distance of over 160 miles in 3hr 48m 30s. When they left Newcastle light rain was falling, and the drizzle continued for the first half hour, making the road muddy. From Gosford over Mangrove Mountain the road was almost impassable, and the motorists' difficulties were increased by encountering crowds of holiday makers, who had started early to reach favourite camping grounds. However, they reached Wiseman's Ferry ahead of schedule time, and continued going well until shortly after leaving Parramatta, with about 14 miles to go, when they had the misfortune to puncture. Rather than waste time changing wheels, however, they continued on a flat tyre to the finish, reducing the previous record, 3h 57m, held by O. W. Lingham, by 81⁄2m. The total distance, according to speedometer, was 104 miles, making an average speed of about 42 miles an hour.

Australian pioneer racing driver Fred Withers in an Essex (c1927)

Written in the dust

No longer are deeds lost in time. Kevin Hartas pupils Sandra Sturgeon and Elizabeth Morris demonstrated how the Twist should be danced, to the delight of the young, and not so young, members of the audience.

“MISS SOMERSBY’

Another item which practically “stole the show” was the “Miss Somersby Quest”.
Two pretty young lasses Jenny Fuller and Lee Pierce may have “played it straight” but they had as fellow entrants, Colin Williams and Jack Austin, whose attempts to qualify were hilarious in the extreme.
They paraded in street clothes (feminine of course), swim suits and evening wear and it is safe to say that “Misses” Williams and Austin were not plagued by eager admirers after the show.
Judges for this bit of nonsense were Bert Huxley and Granville Morris.

SOLISTS

Soloists who contributed their talents to the programme were: Brenda Parsons, of Gosford, Mrs. Peter Laird of Kulnura, Colin Williams who sang “High Noon”, Alan Hoipo, with his own guitar accompaniment, Mrs. Marj Brown and Mrs. J. Price.
Gosford musical group, John Agnew, Richard Bruce and John Cleverly combined for a very polished performance.

The second half of the programme was devoted entirely to a Hill Billy Show.

PRESENTATION

During an interlude in the programme the opportunity was taken to publically thank Mr. And Mrs. C. Wood, and Mr. And Mrs. C. Robson, for their services to Somersby School, and to present them with tokens of the esteem in which they are held.

Source: The Gosford Times

Hall Open Day

<img style="display: block; Regular card evenings were held and a garden fete at "Moorabinda", the home of the Fitzgerald family, raised 100 pounds towards the Clubroom building fund.

A 1 acre parcel of land located opposite Euloo Rd was donated by Mrs Frances Wood in November 1927. The original Trustees were Albert John Love, Albert Walter Sinclair, Alexander David Kemp, Kenneth Henry Kemp, orchardists and John Albert Kirkness, sawmiller.

Later Trustees were Harold Ernest Phelps, Gordon Rowland, Donald Davidson, Annie Wright, Herbert Kingdon Rawle, Clifford Vernon Phelps, Peter Alexander Kemp & Alan Kenneth Slade.

Timber for the Clubroom was supplied at cost from Kirkness' Mooney Creek Mill. The builder was Harold Phelps ably assisted by an eager band of community members as the need arose. The Clubroom was originally sited at the front of the block facing Peats Ridge Rd. Tennis courts were later built at the rear. In 1978 the Clubroom was moved onto the disused tennis courts to get away from traffic noise on busy Peats Ridge Road.

The Clubroom was officially opened 12th December 1928 by Mrs Frances Wood.

It was a much needed community facility. In 1931 the clubroom was used as temporary accommodation for the newly established Peats Ridge School until the existing school opened in 1936 on land donated by Mrs Madeline Pinkstone. The Education Departmentpaid 2 shillings and 6 pence per week rent for the Clubroom.

Church and Sunday School were held there, run by Ken Kemp for over 25 years then carried on by Peter FitzSimons. Over the years the Clubroom has been used by the Agricultural Bureau, Junior Farmers, Scouts, Brownies and Guides, CWA, Liberal Party, Playgroup, School and many private functions. It was also used as a Polling Booth until polling was moved to the school in recent years.

In Memory of early pioneers associated with the clubroom, trees were planted for Frances Wood, Harold Phelps, Ken Kemp and George Wood. Trees were also planted by the Peats Ridge CWA to honour long serving members Mary Slade, Tresa Kemp and Marjorie Gray.

In 1995 a memorial garden was constructed by the Kulnura & District Garden Club to honour Peter and Helen FitzSimons who were tireless workers for the Clubroom and community.

In later years the Clubroom had very little use owing to its small size and changing community needs. Maintenance was becoming a physical and financial burden so the Committee made the decision to sell the property and use the funds to build a new and larger community hall on the school grounds.

The Clubroom was sold to a private buyer in 2005 for $345,000 for use as a private residence. It has since been sold and is now used as a place of worship by the Serbian Church. It is protected under the Heritage Conservation Development Plan as Heritage Item 194.

All funds from the sale of the Clubroom have been invested in the new Peats Ridge Public School Community Hall.

By letter dated 14th Nov 2006, the then Minister for Education & Training gave a "commitment that the hall, when built, will continue to be a community asset irrespective of the future of the school".

The Committee would like to express their thanks to all community members past and present who have contributed in any way to the Clubroom over the years.

<div style="text-align: right; At such times it can be instructive to investigate all options; to not only think beyond the square, but to find new ways to of thinking.

2012 will be The Year of the Farmer.

If the Mangrove Mountain Districts are to be a place for farmers to thrive, we need to work together to create that future.

New Rural Industries is an organisation with a purpose relevant to our situation.

background (From their website):
Who is NRIA?

In 2009, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) hosted a forum of new industries where participants recognized the benefits of information sharing and cooperation with others. Industry leaders agreed on the need for an industry alliance, representing new and emerging Australian rural industries, to maximize the economic benefits Australia gains from such industries and to encourage new industries. This stimulated the development of New Rural Industries Australia (NRIA). The organisation is a company, limited by guarantee, with a board of directors, a membership as well as a rapidly growing number of subscribers.

The NRIA is NOT an industry body of industry bodies – nor does it replace existing industry bodies. We are here to provide an additional link, an additional supply of information and assistance, and also to provide a network of like-minded, innovative people, working to start, develop, build or further expand one or more Australian new rural industries. The NRIA provides individual participants and smaller industry-specific groups with a far more powerful voice and the collective strength to lobby much more effectively. We also work to promote the new rural industries and build the public demand for our diverse products.

Purpose:

The purpose of the NRIA is to facilitate the development and building of capacity of new and innovative Australian rural industries.

The latest edition of their their free email newsletter, Passion to Profit, is available here

Fair remembered 1

<div style="text-align: center;
