Writing has been something I’ve always done.

Always.

I remember having a typewriter when I was little…

It was one of those nice electric ones.

It even had a button you could push to correct your mistakes.

And I’ll never forget the first time I saw a computer…

It was in kindergarten.

I was born in the ’80s…

So, I remember the computer screen being black, with bright green letters.

And who could forget the “floppy disk?”

Intense.

Well, back then it was–especially for a kid.

I bet it was tough to research then.

Look how far we’ve come…

Computers practically run the world.

And what if Google was never invented?

How different would our lives be if there was no such thing as technology?

I mean, with just a few keywords, you can find out about practically anything on the Internet.

And sometimes research just isn’t enough…

Need advice?

Hello, Yahoo! Answers.

This is the place to go if you want other people’s opinions.

“Is my boyfriend cheating on me?”

“I have this weird rash, what do you think it is? Pictures attached.”

“Why won’t she leave me alone?”

“Honestly, am I ugly?”

You get the drift?

And as I was scrolling down all these random questions, something caught my eyes…

“I injected chocolate ice cream directly into my bloodstream to win a bet, what’s going to happen?”

Is this a joke?

This person even questioned if it was worth it or not…

Yes, this was really posted on Yahoo! Answers.

Then my wheels started turning…

“Hmmm,” I thought.

“If I found this stupid question, I bet I could find more.”

Let the digging begin.

I went through hundreds and hundreds of questions…

And here are the results…

“Could I get in trouble for pooping my pants at work?”

Wow, what a question huh?

Well, this person got the advice they were looking for…

And it went something like this…

“Good thought-provoking question. Why don’t you do it, then let the rest of us know what happens? This really must be researched.”

I hope they feel better.

At this point, I’m thinking it just can’t get any better than this…

So I continued on reading question after question.

My eyes were starting to burn from starring at the computer screen…

And my index finger was cramping from continuously rolling the wheel on my mouse downward…

I was just getting ready to call it quits…

Until I read this…

“Please, how much would it hurt to put a knife through your head?”

Is this for real?

Well, as I continued reading, I found out this person was depressed…

(You think)?

Sad…

And I have all the empathy in the world…

But this was a stupid question.

Now, let’s switch gears a little bit and focus on health and beauty.

Read this…

“Is it safe to eat/inhale propane? My dad Hank says propane is part of a balanced breakfast and makes me eat it help.”

Now I’m sure this is just someone trying to be funny…

And most of the time, a stupid question will get a stupid answer.

All I can say is that some people did get creative with this one.

Next question.

“How do I give myself liposuction? I tried a turkey baster that I sharpened attached to a vacuum but it’s not sucking anything out. It just bleeds a lot.”

Can you believe that someone would actually do this?

Me neither.

And the brilliant advice is…

“I used the vacuum and it kind of worked, but I once had this thing for wine, I think it would like suck air out of the bottle, and it worked so well.”

Now, who in their right mind would even consider doing something like this?

Like I said before…

A stupid question will get a stupid answer.

And trust me, there’s a ton more…

And I would end up writing a book if I were to talk about each and every one of them.

So here’s the best of what I found…

“Ok where is the vulva and what purpose does it serve?”

For All You Fashionistas Out There

Fashion.

Believe it or not, we are all into fashion in some way…

Think about it.

When you’re getting ready to have a night out on the town…

Or just going to the movies…

Or even going to the gym…

There is always some kind of an effort.

Even if it’s minimal.

What we pick and choose off the clothes racks reflects our sense of style–no matter where we are…

A thrift store…

Flea market…

Macy’s or Saks…

We choose what we wear.

And what we wear is a reflection of our personalities–at least that’s what I think.
Even if you can’t afford the “latest trend” by Chanel or Louis Vuitton…

You still try to look nice…

Or at least descent.

Right?

However, most of us just can’t afford to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on big name clothes.

Personally, I think you can still look nice with the shirt and pants you got on sale…

And maybe those sale items are designer.

Yes, you can find some designer names at a discounted price…

And yes, it still might be expensive, but if you’re a “slave to fashion” then why not?

To some people, fashion is their life…
And they will pay the price for those big names…

Or the latest trend (big name or not).

And what complements a great outfit better than a killer pair of shoes?

Now, if you want to make a fashion statement, then you have to get a pair of these.

That’s right…

These spicy shoes will dress up any outfit.

And if you really want to stick out in the crowd–then these are a “must- have.”

Currently, these are the hottest trend in Mexico.

Now, I haven’t seen any risk takers here in Colorado just yet…

But I heard there have been sightings in Texas.

“Where do I wear them?”

Well, these are clubbin’ shoes….

And apparently, the ladies are drawn to the men who wear these like a magnet.

You can even put accessories on the ends of the
toes…

“Accessories?”

Yes, accessories like small crystal balls.

No joke.

And the beautiful, bright festive colors will surly brighten your day…

Except for mine of course.

Now, I’m not “knockin’ the boots” (so to speak)…

And I’m certainly not knockin’ the Mexican culture…

(Hello, my last name is Romo).

But, really?

Now, I’ve never been too much of a risk-taker when it comes to fashion…

And I do have some killer shoes…

Colored ones…

A few pair of pointy Steve Madden boots…

Hot…

Patterns and all.

But, as for these…

Nah, I’m alright.

And I’m sure there are people out there who might love these boots…

And I’ll bet some of you who are reading this blog right now totally “dig” them…

And that’s ok.

You know, lately I’ve seen some really crazy fashion on the runways of
Paris and New York…

But this, takes the cake.

My Krav Maga Adventure

I bet most of you are wondering…

What is Krav Maga?

That’s what I said too.

I saw an advertisement for Krav Maga while riding shotgun about a month ago…

And it wasn’t a brightly colored, screaming advertisement that could get your attention from space…

It was simple.

Just a picture of a woman…

Totally ripped…

And it read, “Krav Maga. It’s that good.”

Hmmm…

It’s not boxing…

It’s not martial arts…

And it’s not aerobics…

It’s insane.

And it makes anything I’ve ever done athletically look easy.

Krav Maga is a form of self-defense.

An Israeli form of defense…

These are the guys who train the self-defense instructors of some of Colorado’s law enforcement.

Just to name a few, Colorado State Patrol, Boulder County and Denver…

And come to find out, Krav Maga is favored by U.S. law enforcement agencies all over the world…

Yep, they all learned to kick some major ass here–and teach it to their fellow colleagues.

And just when you think you’re in shape…

Well, think again.

It seems like you never stop moving…

Unless of course, you want to.

And I actually did a few times…

When I was pounding the hell out of a bag…

And again when I just couldn’t kick any more.

Then the instructor busted me.

Woops.

So when I got to that point, I had to psychologically psyche myself out…

I swear, I wanted to throw up at least once.

And as bad as that sounds…

This is my kind of workout (haha).

I kind of knew what I was in for after the warm-up…

And this was an intro class.

However there were some people in there that had 3 to 6 months in…

But they did other things on top of Krav Maga.

Like CrossFit…

Something totally different that I need to try.

I still can’t believe how exhausted I got…

And I kept jumping in and out of the class to take pictures and still got winded.

This means I got to take a few more breathers than everyone else…

Oh, and you should’ve seen them.

Red…

Soggy…

And

Exhausted.

This was so much fun.

And with that said, I know what you might be thinking…

No, I wasn’t asked to do this blog…

No perks.

(Not that I’d accept any)

And this isn’t a “pitch.”

I just had to write about Krav Maga because it was a great experience, and I know it will whip you into shape real fast.

I know this because the instructor told me that he once weighed 235 pounds..

(He showed me his drivers license to prove it)

And six months into the program he was down to 180…

And this was over 5 years ago.

Another participant who has been there for 6 months told me she seen results in about 2 months or so.

And neither of them have an ounce of fat on them.But, as with everything, you have to work for what you want…

And I find this as a unique way to take care of yourself…

Not only in the name of health…

But in the name of protection as well.

(Especially these days)

So if you’re curious, check it out.

They teach other things besides self-defense…

And I can’t wait to try them.

Here I was, about 8 years old (give or take), woopin’ some ass…

The other day I heard the now “infamous” Tiger Woods actually landed a Japanese endorsement deal…

He's pitching some kind of heat rub now.

I couldn’t find out how much he's actually making from this deal, but I’m sure it’s not worth $35- million.

I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt it.

Now that’s a whole lot of money to lose in endorsements as a result of your “sex addiction.”

Can You Really Take Their Word For It?

A few months ago there were some people on the news…

And they owned an ice cream parlor…

And at that ice cream parlor they served ice cream…

Strawberry, vanilla, chocolate,

And everyone’s favorite…

Roast chicken.

No, you didn’t read it wrong…

I did say roast chicken.

Yes, roast chicken flavored ice cream.

From some weird place that served weired ice cream.

That’s just weird to me.

And this is the only word I can think of that properly describes the menu.

Hmmm…let me try to remember exactly what it was I saw…

Ok, so they will specially make your desired flavor for you...

If it’s not made already.

Whatever you like.

And I mean whatever you like… (as long as it is an option there of course).

“Oh, this is really good.”

“Mmmmmmmmmm, not bad.”

And I’m up to try new things…

The Inspiration of Music

What would we do without music?

Have you ever thought about this?

What if music were never invented?

How would we sing praise?

Dance…

Unwind…

Clean house…

How would we celebrate birthdays?

How different would our drive home be?

Now that we’re starting to brainstorm, do you see how much the world needs music?

The love of music (or at least the use of music) is something we all have in common…

No matter where we are in the globe…

No matter what language or genre…

Crazy when you think about it huh?

And, with that being said, I realize how much of an inspiration music can be to us in different areas in our lives.

Especially at the gym.

There’s nothing like some good “upbeat sound” to boil the blood.

And by the looks of the other people at the gym, I’d say they have to agree.

And of course there is a selected few that choose to be “in the zone” quietly.

Well not in complete silence…

A gym is a gym.

I think it’s safe to assume that they all sound pretty much the same.

Grunting…

Weights banging together…

A few squeaky machines...

The sounds of busy feet…

Not to mention the music on the overhead music system.

Now, I don’t know if there is a “set station” that’s required to play at that dial and only that dial at all times…

Now, I’d be surprised if somebody actually chose this particular satellite feed on purpose…

That’s why I was wondering if certain places have a required music selection that the company has to abide by.

Anyways…

As I’m turning on my iPod and tying my hair back, I couldn’t help but to notice…

The song went something like this…

But, I sure did at the gym!

So, my guess is that no one noticed (except for me, of course)…

But that’s just a guess.

I’m assuming this because the gym is noisy and like I said before, practically everyone has their headphones on.

Or in this case, it might’ve inspired some to work “that much harder” and want to work that cheeseburger off…

Peeling Out on a Banana

Have you ever heard anyone say this?

I’m assuming the answer is no.

However, I’ve seen cartoon characters slip and fall on banana peels…but never in real life.

My question is…

"Can this really happen?"

And believe it or not, this myth has raised more eyebrows then you think.

I was actually kind of shocked that so many people were curious about this question.

There were even experiments conducted on this myth by the TV show “Myth Busters.”

Here is a link to one of their experiments I found on YouTube.

So if you just watched the video, then you would find that the myth is not true…

Unless of course you are walking on hundreds of banana peels (like that happens every day)…

Or as Myth Busters would say, “The myth was busted.”

Yea, ok, there is somewhat of a natural lubricant inside of the peel…

And yes, it may be slippery…

Rock a Bye Baby

I know we’ve all heard of this one.

And I know at one time or another we have sung this song to our children or at least someone else’s (maybe you were babysitting or something)…

Anyways, have you ever really thought about what you were singing?

Just to refresh your memory, read this:

Ok…can somebody please tell me why this “nursery rhyme” doesn’t give your kids nightmares?

So basically, we're singing about a little baby that is inside of a baby carriage on the top of a tree.

And...how big is this tree?

Just think for a moment.

Ok...a tree is a tree...and I seriously doubt that a baby tree would be able to hold a baby carriage and a baby without the branch breaking right away...

Right?

Here's my vision...

The website lists two theories…

One theory is that Native American women use to hang their babies cradles on trees…therefore the wind would naturally rock them to sleep.

Ok, makes sense.

Hopefully not on the top of the tree…but ok.

Another theory is that the song originated from a family that lived in a huge tree in England.

Sounds fun.

I should do more research…

But I’m getting kind of tired.

The other day I was at the store and it was pretty quiet.

And then out of nowhere you hear a LOUD, “Ahhhhhhchoooooo!”

Yes, this is my version of someone obnoxiously sneezing.

Obnoxiously…yes I said it was obnoxious.

Not that sneezing is obnoxious…everyone does it.

But this was like unlike anything I ever heard.

And no, I didn’t nor would I expect anyone to “hold it in.”

You could probably get hurt by doing that… right?

It actually startled me—not to mention everyone else around me.

And this guy was FAR away…at least a hundred feet away or more.

After the initial scare, everyone laughed it off...as if they were saying, “Damn that was loud” without saying a word.

But what I did hear was a handful of people saying, “God bless you” or “Bless you.”

Which is sweet…

But why do people say that?

The common answer that we've ALL HEARD...

Some of you probably believe this.

Just in case you are one of the selected few that have NEVER heard of this belief...let me explain.

The myth is that we are suppose to say, “God bless you” after someone sneezes because their heart stopped for that split second—and thankfully they are still alive.

And bless ‘em.

Personally, I don’t believe this.

And of course…

I did some research on this.

WebMd says, “No your heart does not stop when you sneeze.”

WebMd also says that sneezing can be triggered by the sun, plucking your eyebrows, allergies (of course), and yes…even sex.

There is actually several myths about sneezing.

Just When You Thought You Seen It All...

The other day I went to the gym.

And the only time I can really go is during “rush hour,” and I’m not just talking about traffic.

Anyone that works out knows that all gyms in general have at least two rush hours a day.

Rush hour one usually starts around 4:45 to 7:00 a.m. (before work)—and after work—this is generally around 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. or so.

Anyways, I try to avoid these times because you usually have to wait to use a machine or a piece of equipment.

But sometimes you just don’t have a choice.

I’ll usually show up when it starts to die down.

Or right in the middle of it.

When I go to the gym, I just want to do what I got to do and get out.

I’m not there to socialize.

And although there’s nothing wrong with that…it’s not for me.

I see working out as my time to myself.

So the other day I walk into the locker room…and nothing out of the norm.

Then I notice what seemed to be black hair dye all over one of the sinks.

“Is that hair dye?”

“Nah…”

I didn’t think nothing of it as I proceeded to walk further back to where the lockers where.

I’m hanging up my jacket and close the locker…

And out of nowhere I see this lady sitting on the bench about 5 feet from where I was.

She must’ve been using the bathroom or something when I walked in because she came out of nowhere.

Her hair was full of black hair dye…

And she was wearing nothing but a pair of sandals and a SEE THROUGH smock!

She was just sitting there—ever so quaintly on the bench.

And get this…

She was reading a news paper with one leg on top of the other.

I’m not saying she was sitting with her legs crossed…

No.

Her right ankle was resting on top her left knee.

If you can’t visualize it…then try it out.

Keep in mind she was naked.

And to top it off it was rush hour.

She had a pleasant little smile on her face as if she didn’t have a care in the world.

Personally, I’m all for self expression.

But really????

I wonder how her hair came out.

My Relationship With The Kitchen

Cooking—why must we eat to survive? I like the “fruits of the labor” so to speak…but ugh, I have to be in a “mood” to cook.

And don’t get me wrong, I cook even when I’m not in a “cooking kind of mood.”

Because I have to.

I have a hectic schedule and sometimes cooking can be a long, tedious, inconveniencing task.

Especially when you’re sleep deprived.

So you’re probably thinking that I have an eating disorder or something—not true.

Sometimes I just don’t want to do it...

I cannot lie.

Ok most of the time.

I can't help it.

I’m just not one of those people that love to cook...although I wish I was.

But I’m not.

I hardly ever look forward to cooking.

Ok never.

No, wait I'm lying...

There have been times when I enjoyed it…but definitely not each and every time.

Definitely not.

These moments are few and far between (haha)!

But something's better than nothing...right?

Just to clarify—when I say “cook” I’m referring to meals.

Have you ever had something so strange happen to you that you actually had to second guess yourself?

Well I have.

I can’t believe I’m going to tell this story.

Now would be a good time to tell you all upfront that I’M NOT CRAZY.

And the reason why I know I’m not crazy is because I wasn’t alone when this happened.

Although I was kind of young—like15 years young—you have to believe me on this one.

It was a clear, beautiful summer night and a group of us were hanging out at my house.

About 9 o’clock, maybe closer to 9:30, my friend asked me to walk her halfway home.

So I did.

Well, I just about reached my halfway point and we were just about to part ways…

And there it was.

“What was it?” you ask.

I’m still asking myself the same question.

In the sky, we had seen a series of strange orange lights.

No, they weren’t spinning. There wasn’t a “U.F.O. shape." There wasn’t a whole bunch of different colors and there was no blinding brightness…

Just noticeable brightness.

There was only one color.

Orange.

Just orange.

And these different shades of orange danced around—kind of like the way the sunlight hits a stream.

They resembled what you would see spilling out of a fountain on the Fourth of July.

That’s the best I can do for a description.

At first they where at quite a distance…pretty high up in the sky…and far enough away to kind of have to “squint” too see it.

But it was noticeable.

We both saw it at the same time.

Then it got closer and closer…

And lower and lower…

All of this in a matter of minutes.

“Hey…look, what’s that?! Is a plane going down?!”

I can’t exactly get into how many feet away it was from us...but I can say that you could’ve easily taken a picture of it with your cell phone cam’ (of course in the late 90s the pager was the "thing” to have…haha)!

Even if it was just a regular old flip phone—it would’ve been possible.

We didn’t know what to think!

(And YES…we where SOBER).

By this time it was pretty close to us…and we where freaking out!

It was about halfway up the sky when…

Out of nowhere…it dropped down…

Straight down—and I mean fast!

Then it was gone—completely gone.

Just like that.

“Huh?”

By this time we where screaming and started running back towards my house.

Then we stopped for only a brief moment to look back.

Anxiously holding onto each other…we see these lights shoot straight up…high into the sky.

And it disappeared.

Yeah.

There was no bright flash or anything when it disappeared...

It just vanished.

I will never forget that.

Why didn’t anyone else see this?

I didn’t live in the country.

I remember being glued to the television the next day to see if maybe the news had a report about it.

But nothing.

Was it military testing? A comet?

No…would a comet shoot straight up like that?

It was definitely NOT an airplane…there was absolutely no blinking lights…no smog, no smoke...

Nothing.

It was just a series of orange “fizzy” lights.

We’ve only talked about it once since it happened.

I am a fan of horror flicks and Halloween is my favorite holiday. I’m not necessarily "crazy" about gore…but I can handle it.

The other day I was watching a documentary about serial killers (it was a Sunday and there was absolutely nothing on—so don’t judge meJ)!!

And I don’t remember exactly what channel…but man…I’ll tell ya’…this was like the “Serial Killer Hall of Fame.”

I only got to see the last 45 minutes or so, but it was good.

Naturally, I found myself wondering how anyone could be so sick. I couldn’t believe some of the stories I heard.

That actually happened?

I can’t even kill a spider, and here I am listening to these vial stories about serial killers.

One story particularly stuck out to me—John Wayne Gacey. Ugh.

I didn’t hear all that much detail—but what I did hear prompted me to do a little research on this weirdo.

Why did I even bother to research him?

Well…once you have a “journalistic mind” you want to know the who, what, where, when and what-ifs of everything...all the time. It can actually be a pain sometimes.

Anyways I came to a realization…

There is a TON of convicted killers that have the middle name “Wayne!”

Seriously.

To name a few—Michael Wayne Summers, Coy Wayne Wesbrook, Jerry Wayne Walker, Randall Wayne Stevens—it goes on and on!

It's A Catch 22

Have you ever wondered who coined the phrase, “catch 22?”

I have heard this phrase quite a bit.

Every time I hear it I think, “Dang…that just sounds funny.”

Why do people say it?

Where did they learn this phrase?

From word of mouth of course.

But does anyone really KNOW the story behind the phrase?

Or if they are even quoting this phrase correctly?

Do you say it just because it sounds cool?

Or do you say it because you THINK you know what it means?

Yea, I’ve said it…but I was never really comfortable after I said it.

All I knew is that other people said it when they where referring to a specific type of dilemma that didn't work out for them no matter what.

So I must be using this phrase correctly…right?

What is the true meaning to the phrase “catch 22?”

Where did the phrase come from?

I looked it up.

According to answers.com…we all have the right idea about how to use the phrase.

Yes, a “catch 22” does indeed mean that you are referring to somewhat of a “no-win situation.”

Whew!

Now the history behind it.

“Catch 22” is the name of a WWII novel written by Joseph Heller.

In the book, a pilot by the name Yossarian wants to STOP flying dangerous bombing missions.

In order to do so he HAS TO BE declared insane.

He IS declared insane because he WANTS to fly.

However, he KNOWS this mission is dangerous—and because he KNOWS this…he is declared SANE.

He is in a no-win situation.

So…let me try to clarify this.

If you are in the military and try to make a case that you ARE insane…for example YOU are UNAWARE that you find combat pleasurable—but EVERYONE ELSE around you sees that you LOVE it…you would NOT get discharged.

Although the military CAN discharge you for being insane… they would consider you IDEAL for the mission.

Now, if you try to make a case that YOU think YOU ARE insane by TELLING someone…they would say that you are NOT insane…because only a SANE person would recognize THEIR behavior as abnormal.

An INSANE person would NOT recognize their behaviour as abnormal. A SANE person would.

So basically, you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t.

You are in a no-win situation.

Confusing—yes.

So, every time you hear someone say, “It’s a catch 22.” You’ll know where the phrase came from and EXACTLY what it means.

HOT DAMN!

I think everyone knows someone that just LOVES spicy foods…the spicier the better…right?

But come on…boundaries people!

And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE spicy foods—but to a certain extent.

Have you ever had something so hot that you could’ve swore you seen stars?

Seriously.

And no matter what you did, NOTHING would put you out of your misery.

Yea, I’ve been there.

Which brings me to this one time years ago, a group of us went to eat sushi.

Now, I’m not a “sushi kind of gal.” (Not that there’s anything wrong with that)!

It was something new and it was something different.

So, being the “sushi rookie”—I was introduced to the California Roll.

Wow…this thing was cool—very appealing to the eye.

It was rolled all perfectly and had all these little side deals that you could “dip” it in if you wanted.

I know it sounds ridiculous, but for a 19-year-old first timer—this was awesome.

So…here I am dabbling in this and that, when I happen to look over and see this “green gew” so conveniently placed before me.

“What’s this?” I ask.

“Oh, that’s Wasabi…it’s really hot.”

“Oh yea…how hot?” I ask.

“It’s hot. You don’t need that much, just put a little.”

So, in the back of mind I’m thinking, “Yea right. You’re just weak. Your version of hot and my version of hot are two different things. Whatever”

I grab a knife, and ever so generously apply a heaping spoonful of this “green stuff” to my California Roll.

I take a bite.

And that’s all I can remember.

I swear I seen colors—colors I never even knew existed.

My ears started ringing.

It felt like I had a torch in my mouth.

It was awful.

My eyes were watering, my nose was running, and every pore on my body was panicking.

And come to find out that the California Roll isn’t even really considered sushi.

Do you know what this means?

I get tired even thinking about it. It seems like everywhere you go you see someone yawning.

And what do you hear most of the time when you ask someone how they’re doing? What do they say?

“Oh, I’m tired.” “Oh good, I’m just tired, how about you?” “Oh, I’m really tired today.”

We’ve all heard this before. We’ve all said it before.

So with this, I have two questions...

Why do we yawn when we’re tired?

And why do we yawn when we see someone else doing it?

I bet you’re thinking that we yawn because we are bored or tired. Of course this might be a plausible explanation because most of the time that’s when we do yawn.

According to webmd.com, no one really knows why we yawn--however there are many

theories that have floated around.

One theory is the, “Brain Cooling Hypothesis” (scienceblogs.com). The theory is that yawning is the body’s way of keeping our brain temperature at safe levels. In other words, if we didn’t yawn, our brain might get overheated.

Another theory I read on this website is that is that yawning may be linked to migraines, epileptic seizures and even multiple sclerosis.

But this is not certain. Again, these are just theories.

One of a few theories listed on webmd.com is that “yawning may be associated with increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the blood--therefore inducing a yawn to bring in oxygen.”

Other theories (just to name a few more) listed on webmd.com, is that we yawn because we need to satisfy our need to stretch our muscles, or we yawn because it helps us to stay alert.

But really…after all this research…I didn’t find one website that said they knew the exact cause of yawning.

My conclusion as to why we yawn--there is none. It’s just something we do.

This brings me to question two. Why is yawning contagious?

How many times have you yawned while reading this blog about yawning? (Not because it’s boring, of course J ).

I swear, I’ve already yawned more then a dozen times. Why is that?

Haven’t you noticed that every time you’re around someone that yawns, you yawn--or vice versa?

If not, then conduct an experiment the next time you are sitting with a group of people. Go ahead and let out a gigantic, loud, obnoxious, “Yaawwwnnnn!”

See what happens.

I’ll bet you nine times out of ten, someone will catch the bait.

But back to the question--why is it contagious?

One theory listed on Discovery News at discovery.com says that, yawning is contagious because it is a “form of social bonding.” And that’s why we do it when others do it.

Need something more scientific?

Another theory listed on wisegeek.com is that “the signal to yawn must bypass a response called the mirror neuron system, which would render yawning in response to someone else a conscious and imitative act.”

In other words, it’s an involuntary response made by us, in our brains, when we see someone do it.

Valentine's Day

I swear it wasn't but a few days after Christmas when I started seeing Valentine's Day displays everywhere. It seems like everywhere you go there are manifestations of singing musical cards, and red and pink hearts.

I know what you're thinking--"Oh, she sounds bitter about Valentine's Day." Not true.

When I got to really thinking about it, I realized that all I knew about Valentine's Day is that we are expected to buy presents, candy and dinner for that "special someone." And we are also expected to at least acknowledge the other special people in our lives as well. Right?

Either way, why do we wait until Valentine's Day to show these "special people" in our lives how much we love them? Because the retailers said so? Speaking from my standpoint, I think those of us who celebrate Valentine's Day, celebrate it because we feel like we have to.

And yes, I too am guilty of falling into the hype of it all. There is no way I would be without a present for my "special someone" on Valentine's Day. And I would feel pretty bad if I didn't at least give my mother a call, or send a card, or something. But...that's just me. I think something's better than nothing.

I don't think we should wait until February 14th to show your loved ones you care.

Personally speaking, it would mean a lot more to me if my "special someone" came home with roses "just because."

When you least expect it.

According to Wikipedia.org, Valentine’s Day is supposed to be celebrated between, "intimate companions." The website also says that Valentine's Day was "traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other."

Did you just read that? LOVERS.

So if this day was originally reserved for lovers, then why do children celebrate it in school? Why did you send a card to your uncle in Miami? Do you know why? Because you and me get all caught up into the hype of it all.

This is just critical thinking. Again, I'm not anti-Valentine's Day.

On a positive note, some of us just don't know how to express our love for one another the way we probably should. Not everyone in the world is capable of being thoughtful, and some of us need that one reserved day to show that special person, as well as our loved ones, how much we care and appreciate them.

Besides the retail madness, I think celebrating Valentine's Day is actually a good thing.

Yea, so what if it was technically reserved for "lovers." Who (besides me) is actually going to elaborate on that?

Teaching our children how to appreciate the people in their lives isn't a bad thing. And hey...that Valentine's Day card you sent to your lonely uncle in Miami--well I bet you made his day.

Even if you are one of those people that spread love just once a year, that's ok.
Like I said before, something’s better than nothing.

Superstition

I really don't believe in superstitions. Although, when I was younger I did.

I remember walking home from school, (elementary school of course), avoiding EVERY crack on the sidewalk. You know, "Step on a crack, break your mothers back?"

That was a long walk too.

There was this one time I accidentally stepped on a crack--and I was SO HAPPY to see my mom when I got home because I felt so guilty. Ahhh...kids.

Long story short, I'm not that superstitious anymore. However I do have some beliefs I hold onto.

I was about 30 minutes late for work, and it wasn't because I was out partying the night before. Yes, I did sleep in--but only because every Friday I would close the place and then have to open the place back up 7 hours later.

This just happened to be the day that I had to work with, "Miss Sunshine" (sarcastically speaking). She was the hardest person to work with--pretty straight laced. I swear she could make a drill sergeant cry.
I just couldn't tell her I slept in. No, not her. She went to the "big boss" for everything. Yea...one of those kind of people.

I told her that I was late because I got pulled over. What could she say, right? Now that I think of it, she could've asked to see the ticket. Good thing she didn't.

About 2 days later, I was driving to work, and guess what happened? Yep...I got pulled over. And I NEVER get pulled over. Good thing she wasn't working that day, huh? I had to go to work and tell them I was late because I got pulled over (for real this time).

This was the first and the last time I will lie about why I'm late. I believe, deep down, that I jinxed myself.

As for the black cat crossing my path and opening an umbrella inside of the house, not for me. And on Friday the 13th, if I have stuff to do, I'm doing it. Not knockin' it. Again, just not for me.

There was actually another time when a white opal ring was given to me.

Well if you don't know, the superstition is if you wear white opal, and it is not your birthstone, (October), then it will crack in half and bring you bad luck.

And I'll be damned! It cracked in half--right down the middle.

I wasn't aware of this superstition until I told my mom what happened. I was showing it to her and she said, "Oh yea, those are supposed to be bad luck. They crack in half if you're wearing them and it's not your birthstone."

Gee, thanks mom. She was the one that gave it to me.

I don't remember if I ever did have a string of bad luck though; it was so long ago. Maybe I did and it was so traumatizing that it's all just a blur now, (ha-ha).
