Penn State men’s lacrosse players Dylan Jaszcz, Ben Johnson, Luke Scarpell, and Wesley Scurci have entered the transfer portal, per the Inside Lacrosse Transfer Portal Tracker.

Jaszcz is a redshirt-sophomore attackman from West Chester, Pennsylvania. He played in two games for the Nittany Lions in 2025 but did not appear this season. Prior to Penn State, he was rated a four-star recruit by Inside Lacrosse and played four years of varsity lacrosse at The Episcopal Academy.

Johnson appeared in five games over his career with the Nittany Lions. The redshirt-junior goalie allowed four goals against while recording five saves. The reason for the former team’s defensive MVP at Avon Old Farms transfer is likely the emergence of true freshman Preston Hawkins in net.

Scarpello entered the portal with one year of eligibility remaining after spending four years in Happy Valley. The grad transfer appeared in nine games over his career, recording one assist. The short-stick defensive midfielder is a former second-team all-state honoree in New Jersey.

Scurci is also a graduate transfer. He joined the Nittany Lions in 2023 after playing 12 games with Lindenwood in 2022. The attackman played six games for Penn State, scoring twice and adding two assists.

The Nittany Lions have added one player in the transfer portal so far. Defender Owen Tasse signed with Penn State after spending four years at St. Bonaventure.

Come on, Christian Smith, do something.

Well, folks, ample time has passed for Matt Campbell to build up his first recruiting class as Penn State football’s head coach. He inherited a class with no commits and needed to hit the ground running to turn it around.

After five-and-a-half months, Penn State currently sits at No. 8 on 247Sports’ composite 2027 class rankings, good for third in the Big Ten behind UCLA and USC. Not too shabby considering the mess he walked into.

After some notable commitments at key positions in recent days, what else can Campbell and Co. do to build up the class?

Quarterbacks

Penn State locked down three-star Massachusetts signal caller Will Wood after missing out on four-star Peter Bourque to Virginia Tech. Once it was clear that Bourque was gaining significant interest from other programs, Campbell sent the dogs out to Wood for an in-home visit. Safe to say it made a good impression.

Bourque and Wood even acknowledged their recruiting saga after they both committed to their respective schools.

@willwood11_ https://t.co/V1FDBX6qjC
— Peter Bourque c/o2027 (@PeterBourque7) May 16, 2026

With Wood in place for the 2027 class, it doesn’t seem like the Nittany Lions need to put their resources toward another at the position for now. Penn State still has Iowa State transfer Alex Manske behind Rocco Becht — who did get reps at Iowa State in 2025 — and freshmen Kase Evans and Peyton Falzone learning the ropes. Connor Barry and Jack Lambert are also in the room, but their doors seem more closed than open.

Running Backs

Penn State used the last two weeks to reel in four-star running back Aiden Gibson out of South Carolina and three-star Chukwuma Odoh out of New Jersey. With Penn State’s future at the running back position looking slightly light, both were big splashes for Savon Huggins.

Gibson averaged 119.1 rushing yards per game in his high school career. Odoh has 2,225 career rushing yards. The Nittany Lions’ 2027 running back class is in good hands overall, to say the least.

Wide Receivers

Penn State’s only two pledges at wideout in the 2027 class are four-star Landon Blum and three-star Jamir Dean. Blum is an Iowa native, but he didn’t get his Iowa State offer until six days before Penn State offered him. He committed to Penn State on April 4 while in town for an unofficial visit, becoming Penn State’s first offensive commit in the class, first four-star, and the first commit for Kashif Moore.

On the other side, Dean has blossomed into a four-star recruit and received an offer from Georgia on May 6. The Bulldogs are gaining traction for a flip, and Dean is likely to take an official visit soon, per Rivals. If Dean does flip, Moore will have to hit the ground running again. It would be a sizable hit to the recruiting class as a whole and a lot of damage for the new receiving corps.

An option for Moore could be four-star Khalil Taylor. He was formerly committed to Penn State under James Franklin and has kept the Nittany Lions in his top schools throughout the past few months. His commitment, whether to Penn State or not, should be made soon.

Tight Ends

Taylor Mouser landed his first Penn State tight end recruit in South Dakota four-star Cooper Terwilliger on April 13. Terwilliger is the third-highest-rated player in the Nittany Lions’ haul to date, as well as the No. 1 player in his home state, per 247Sports’ composite rankings.

Campbell and Co. first offered the tight end on April 16, 2024, while at Iowa State. He was one of the early players Campbell re-offered when he took the Penn State job in December. Campbell and Mouser wanted Terwilliger for a long time, and it looks like he’ll serve as Penn State’s big splash at the position for the cycle.

However, the Nittany Lions should try to snag another to diversify the room heading into 2027. This could come in the form of 6-foot-7 Sean Currie, who will announce his commitment on Friday.

Offensive Line

Penn State’s hottest coach on the recruiting trail has easily been Ryan Clanton. He’s secured pledges from four offensive line recruits in three-stars David Tarawallie, Owen Reilly, Ryan Robbins, and Jon Sassic. While the collection of three stars isn’t exactly flashy, neither is the offensive line.

Clanton does need some more reinforcements down the line, however. Cooper Cousins seems ahead of schedule in his development and could enter the NFL Draft after his junior year in 2026.

Penn State doesn’t have much offensive line depth beyond that, especially after the mass exodus following the 2026 NFL Draft. It’s a new era for the line. No Nick Dawkins, no Vega Ioane, no Drew Shelton. Clanton needs a strong and abundant class, for once the Iowa State transfers start leaving, too.

Cornerbacks

Penn State’s highest-rated pledge in the 2027 class is four-star cornerback Kei’Shjuan Telfair. The Nittany Lions also hold commitments from three-star Semajay Robinson, Ka’ron Ceaser, and Zachary Gleason Jr.

Honestly, Penn State looks pretty set at the position for the class.

Terry Smith slipped back into his role as cornerbacks coach and made quick work of the recruiting trail to build a respectable class. You just have to imagine how easy it is for that guy to win over high schoolers. He did have a good track record recruiting guys to a James Franklin-led team, after all.

Safeties

The lone safety in Penn State’s Class of 2027 so far is three-star Jonathan Galette out of New Jersey.

The Nittany Lions do enter 2026 with a strong young safety core, though. Vaboue Toure is set to take on an increased role following a solid 2025 campaign. Marcus Neal Jr. and Jeremiah Cooper are the clear tandem at the position, but they’re both expected to depart for the NFL Draft following the season.

Outside of that, Penn State has redshirt sophomore Syracuse transfer Ibn McDaniels, sophomore Boston College transfer Omarion Davis, and a slew of freshmen. There are only nine safeties rostered currently, and with Neal and Cooper set to leave, Broomfield has to start getting some more guys in the door.

Linebackers

Just like the safety group, Penn State only has one commit at the position in three-star Blake Betton. He was first offered by Iowa State on May 16, 2025, and promptly received a new offer from Penn State once the Campbell regime took over.

While Penn State does have a strong young linebacker duo in Cam Smith and Alex Tatsch that saw solid action in 2025, the majority of the room is in their junior year or above. Tony Rojas is likely to leave for the NFL Draft, and Iowa State transfers Kooper Ebel, Cael Brezine, and Caleb Bacon can follow suit.

There’s a mass exodus coming. Tyson Veidt has to get his numbers up. The standard is different at LBU. A crystal ball prediction for three-star Case Alexander could help his cause.

Defensive Line

The Nittany Lions hold only two defensive line pledges in the 2027 class from four-star Stanley Montgomery and three-star Carter Blattner. It’s a little unfair to rate Ikaika Malloe’s efforts in light of UCLA’s monster recruiting class so far — Malloe built those relationships for the Bruins and Bob Chesney seems to be a master salesman — but there needs to be a little more action in actual commitments for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions and Christian Smith don’t even hold a commitment from an edge rusher in the class so far. There’s still a long road to go, but Smith needs to pick up some slack. He’s the only position coach on staff without a commit in the class so far.

With a 24-team playoff looking more realistic, heres who Penn State would have played if the format started earlier.

On Tuesday, Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti made his first public comments in support of a 24-team playoff format for college football.

The proposed format would give the top eight seeds first-round byes, followed by a home game, with the top two teams earning the best path throughout the entire tournament. Petitti said this would create a season in which teams 16 through 25 are fighting each week to keep their spot in the playoffs and potentially earn a home game, while those ahead of No. 16 are battling to keep their bye or home games.

The Big Ten and Petitti have faced backlash from the public and from the SEC, which favors a 16-team format.

“When I was at [Major League] baseball, we never had to convince anybody that keeping more teams in the race is better for everybody and the fans, like we never had to do that,” Petitti told reporters at the Big Ten spring meetings. “I feel like in this space, like we’re kind of being asked to do that. It’s almost counterintuitive. I think that more teams alive as late as possible is a fundamental way that I thought about it when we’re changing the playoff schedule.”

While a new playoff format is likely still at least a year away, we looked back to see who Penn State would have played in the College Football Playoff had the 24-team format been in place, according to the final College Football Playoff rankings.

For reference, in February 2026, the Big Ten laid out the format in an internal document sent to athletic directors and head coaches, per ESPN. As stated before, the top eight teams will get a bye. It’s also important to note, though, that the first two rounds are on campus, and there can be no rematches from the regular season in the first round.

2024 – No. 13 Miami or No. 20 Illinois

Penn State finished 2024 ranked No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings, which would have resulted in a bye for round one of the 24-team playoff. In the second round, however, the Nittany Lions would have faced the winner of the No. 13 Miami-No. 20 Illinois matchup.

Penn State beat the Fighting Illini earlier that season in a 21-7 rock fight in Beaver Stadium. Drew Allar threw for 135 yards on 21 attempts and rushed four times for 15 yards. Running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen stole the show, though, combining for 196 yards and two touchdowns. The defense also had a big day, recording 4.5 sacks on Luke Altmyer.

Miami would have posed a greater threat. The team was led by future No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and had talented players like Elijah Arroyo, Xavier Restrepo, Ruben Bain, Hakeem Mesidor, and Kiko Mauigoa to back him up. All are now in the NFL.

The Hurricanes lost 42-41 to Matt Campbell’s Iowa State team in the Pop-Tarts Bowl to end the season.

2023 – No. 23 Liberty

In the last year of the four-team format, Penn State finished the regular season 10-2 with losses to Michigan and Ohio State. The Nittany Lions lost to Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl but finished the year ranked No. 10 and in the 24-team field.

As the 10 seed, Penn State would have taken on No. 23 Liberty in the first round at Beaver Stadium.

Liberty was undefeated in the regular season that year, but with no Power Four wins or really any strong wins at all. The closest game the Flames played was a 21-16 victory over Sam Houston. Liberty ended up in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl against No. 8 Oregon and lost 45-6.

The team was led by quarterback Kaidon Salter, who threw for 2,876 yards and 32 touchdowns with a 61% completion rate. He also added over 1,000 yards on the ground and 12 touchdowns. Future Miami Hurricane and Los Angeles Ram, CJ Daniels was the top receiver, putting up over 1,000 yards.

2022 – No. 22 Mississippi State

In another 10-2 regular season with losses to Michigan and Ohio State, the Nittany Lions ended the year ranked No. 11 and in the Rose Bowl against No. 8 Utah. In the 24-team format, however, Penn State would have faced Mississippi State at home in the first round of the playoffs.

The Bulldogs, led by quarterback Will Rogers, went 8-4 in the regular season. Their losses came at unranked LSU, unranked Kentucky, No. 6 Alabama, and No. 1 Georgia. Mississippi State’s top-25 ranking was due to wins against No. 20 Ole Miss and No. 17 Texas A&M.

Rogers threw for almost 4000 yards that season with 68% completion rate. He also had 35 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year. Future USC Trojan and Houston Texan Woody Marks was the primary running back for the Bulldogs, recording 582 yards on the ground and 288 through the air.

Penn State football would not have made the 24-team playoff in 2025, 2021, or 2020.

Voss and Porter will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Penn State baseball outfielder Jack Porter and catcher Nate Voss are entering the transfer portal, per On3’s transfer portal tracker. They both have one year of eligibility remaining.

I am officially entering the transfer portal as a Grad Student with 1 year remaining after 2 years at Penn State.
Position-OF
Totals
.310 AVG
.394 OBP
.515 SLG
14 HR
24 2B
9.8 strikeout rate in 2026
All Big 10 Second Team and All Region Second Team Selections. pic.twitter.com/cTPjvgzeBP
— Jack Porter (@JackPorter2022) May 21, 2026

Porter, who announced his intentions to transfer on social media on Thursday, will play for his fourth school in five years. The Perfect Game No. 15 overall prospect in Tennessee in the Class of 2022 enrolled at UCF and redshirted his first season in 2023 before entering the portal and rebuilding his stock at John A. Logan College, a junior college in Illinois, in 2024.

He re-entered the portal after 2024 and jumped back to Division I, joining Penn State ahead of the 2025 season, where he serves as the team’s primary designated hitter. He slashed .310/.408/.549 in 47 games with 10 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 24 extra-base hits. Despite missing the Big Ten Tournament with an injury, he was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten.

An early-season slump slowed his momentum down in 2026, but he still finished with a line of .311/.376/.477 with four home runs, 21 RBIs, and 17 extra-base hits in 41 games thanks to a 16-game hitting streak. An injury suffered in late April against Oregon limited him to just two pinch-hit at-bats in the final three weeks of the regular season.

Voss is also entering the portal for the third time in his career, having spent his freshman year at Michigan in 2023 before also going the junior college route in 2024 at Iowa Western Community College.

Upon arriving at Penn State in 2025, he was a big part of a formidable offense as a junior, slashing .245/.337/.496 with eight home runs, 33 RBIs, and 17 extra-base hits in 43 games. He had possibly the biggest swing of the season that year, a go-ahead home run to send the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals against USC.

NATE VOSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He hammers this one over the wall in left!

T9 | PSU 2, USC 1#WeAre pic.twitter.com/h2WVk6jNzs
— Penn State Baseball (@PennStateBASE) May 22, 2025

He was once again expected to get the lion’s share of reps behind the plate in 2026, but he suffered a season-ending injury on a slide into third base in the season opener against Air Force on February 13. Upon his injury, senior Joey DeMucci and true freshman Avery Smith split time at the position.

It is assumed that Voss will apply for a medical redshirt after his unfortunate injury, but things could be complicated by a future NCAA ruling on eligibility.
