- Does OCR (Optical Character Recognition) so you text can be taken off of the scanned document and pasted into another application. I think it even recognizes hand written notes and converts it to text!

Who knows how much “under the table” he is being paid?


Because of that, he refuses to allow a commonsense change to fix a loophole of some very old laws that plaintiff attorneys have figured out how to abuse. The combination of the Plaintiff’s Bar and the Speaker make it impossible to make a fix to this very economically crippling scandal. ONLY PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE CAN STAND UP TO THIS CONTINUED ABUSE!

I have spent 2 days researching the building insurance situation in NY City. I am beside myself in what I am learning! It's amazing that Sheldon Silver, NY Assembly Speaker is able to cause so much pain and suffering for so many individuals and businesses. Is it really just for the money or is he an evil person as well? I have a prospective client who has 15 employees who will probably have to close his business because he is unable to obtain the needed liability insurance – all because of one greedy lawyer/politician. It is costing the state countless millions in lost revenue and lost jobs.

The solution is simple. They need to change a few words in some very old labor laws that are on the books. Those laws, sections 240, 241, and 241-a of the New York Labor Law need to be amended strike out the phrase "Absolute liability". The absolute wording should be replaced with a more reasonable standard similar to that found in Section 241 (6) of the Labor Law which imposes liability on contractors and owners for failing to provide a safe place to work. A realistic definition of a "fall from a height" needs to be established as well. The current law allows for plaintiffs to be awarded a settlement even if the fall is 6 inches or less. No matter if the employee is injured because they were drunk and careless and even if they intentionally jumped from any height and were injured, the "Absolute Liability" language guarantees them a settlement.

My contractor, a foundation contractor specializing in high-rises, would normally expect to pay about 10% for general liability on a project. So, his project of $1.3 million, would have a cost of about $65,000. In New York, because of these lawsuits, only a couple of carriers will consider the project. And those that will demand a minimum premium of $250,000! One carrier recently charged $800,000 for a $1,000,000 project! They need to do so because of the attorney’s feeding the flames with 1000’s of claims.
