Lung Cancer Causes

Using tobacco products has been shown to cause cancer. In fact, smoking tobacco, using smokeless tobacco, and being exposed regularly to secondhand tobacco smoke are responsible for a large number of cancer deaths in the U.S. each year. Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer. Scientists have reported widely on the link between cancer and smoking since the 1960s. Since then, study after study has provided more proof that cigarette smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer.

Before cigarette smoking became popular in the early part of the 20th century, doctors rarely, if ever, saw patients with lung cancer. But today, lung cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer. Nearly 90 percent of people with lung cancer developed it because they smoked cigarettes.

If you smoke cigarettes, you are at much higher risk for lung cancer than a person who has never smoked. The risk of dying from lung cancer is 23 times higher for men who smoke and 13 times higher for women who smoke than for people who have never smoked. Lung cancer can affect young and old alike.

Stopping smoking greatly reduces your risk for developing lung cancer. After you stop, your risk levels off. Ten years after the last cigarette, the risk of dying from lung cancer drops by 50 percent -- which does not mean, however, that risk is eliminated.

Smoking cigars and pipes also puts you at risk for lung cancer. Cigar and pipe smokers have a higher risk of lung cancer than nonsmokers. Even cigar and pipe smokers who do not inhale are at increased risk for lung, mouth, and other types of cancer. The likelihood that a smoker will develop lung cancer is related to the age smoking began; how long the person smoked; the number of cigarettes, pipes, or cigars smoked per day; and how deeply the smoker inhaled.

Many studies suggest that non-smokers who are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, also called secondhand smoke, are at increased risk of lung cancer. Secondhand smoke is the smoke that non-smokers are exposed to when they share air space with someone who is smoking. Each year, about 3,000 non-smoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of breathing secondhand smoke.

Exposure to radon can put a person at risk for lung cancer, too. People who work in mines may be exposed to this invisible, odorless, and radioactive gas that occurs naturally in soil and rocks. It is also found in houses in some parts of the country. A kit available at most hardware stores allows homeowners to measure radon levels in their homes.

Another substance that can contribute to lung cancer is asbestos. Asbestos is used in shipbuilding, asbestos mining and manufacturing, insulation work, and brake repair, although products with asbestos have been largely phased out over the past several decades. If inhaled, asbestos particles can lodge in the lungs, damaging cells and increasing the risk for lung cancer.

Asbestos workers should use the protective equipment provided by their employers and follow recommended work practices and safety procedures.

Researchers continue to study the causes of lung cancer and to search for ways to prevent it. We already know that the best way to prevent lung cancer is to quit or never start smoking. The sooner a person quits smoking the better. Even if you have been smoking for many years, it's never too late to benefit from quitting.

The diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, and many cases of type 2, is usually prompted by recent-onset symptoms of excessive urination (polyuria) and excessive thirst (polydipsia), often accompanied by weight loss. These symptoms typically worsen over days to weeks; about a quarter of people with new type 1 diabetes have developed some degree of diabetic ketoacidosis (a type of metabolic acidosis which is caused by high concentrations of ketone bodies, formed by the breakdown of fatty acids and the deamination of amino acids) by the time the diabetes is recognized. The diagnosis of other types of diabetes is usually made in other ways. These include ordinary health screening; detection of hyperglycemia during other medical investigations; and secondary symptoms such as vision changes or unexplainable fatigue. Diabetes is often detected when a person suffers a problem that is frequently caused by diabetes, such as a heart attack, stroke, neuropathy, poor wound healing or a foot ulcer, certain eye problems, certain fungal infections, or delivering a baby with macrosomia or hypoglycemia.

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by recurrent or persistent hyperglycemia, and is diagnosed by demonstrating any one of the following: According to the current definition, two fasting glucose measurements above 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) is considered diagnostic for diabetes mellitus.

Patients with fasting glucose levels from 100 to 125 mg/dL (6.1 and 7.0 mmol/L) are considered to have impaired fasting glucose. Patients with plasma glucose at or above 140 mg/dL or 7.8 mmol/L, but not over 200, two hours after a 75 g oral glucose load are considered to have impaired glucose tolerance. Of these two pre-diabetic states, the latter in particular is a major risk factor for progression to full-blown diabetes mellitus as well as cardiovascular disease.

While not used for diagnosis, an elevated level of glucose irreversibly bound to hemoglobin (termed glycated hemoglobin or ''HbA1c'') of 6.0% or higher (the 2003 revised U.S. standard) is considered abnormal by most labs; HbA1c is primarily used as a treatment-tracking test reflecting average blood glucose levels over the preceding 90 days (approximately) which is the average lifetime of red blood cells which contain hemoglobin in most patients. However, some physicians may order this test at the time of diagnosis to track changes over time. The current recommended goal for HbA1c in patients with diabetes is 6.5%.

Diabetes mellitus - often referred to simply as diabetes - is a condition in which the body either does not produce enough, or does not properly respond to, insulin, a hormone produced in the pancreas. Insulin enables cells to absorb glucose in order to turn it into energy. In diabetes, the body either fails to properly respond to its own insulin, does not make enough insulin, or both. This causes glucose to accumulate in the blood, often leading to various complications.

Many types of diabetes are recognized: pre-diabetes indicates a condition that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. As of 2009 there are 57 million Americans who have pre-diabetes.

Gestational diabetes: Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood sugar (glucose) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women. It may precede development of type 2 (or rarely type 1).

Many other forms of diabetes mellitus are categorized separately from these. Examples include congenital diabetes due to genetic defects of insulin secretion, cystic fibrosis-related diabetes, steroid diabetes induced by high doses of glucocorticoids, and several forms of monogenic diabetes.

All forms of diabetes have been treatable since insulin became medically available in 1921, but a cure is difficult. Pancreas transplants have been tried with limited success in type 1 DM; gastric bypass surgery has been successful in many with morbid obesity and type 2 DM; and gestational diabetes usually resolves after delivery. Diabetes and its treatments can cause many complications. Acute complications including hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, or nonketotic hyperosmolar coma may occur if the disease is not adequately controlled. Serious long-term complications include cardiovascular disease, chronic renal failure, retinal damage, which can lead to blindness, several types of nerve damage, and microvascular damage, which may cause erectile dysfunction and poor wound healing. Poor healing of wounds, particularly of the feet, can lead to gangrene, possibly requiring amputation. Adequate treatment of diabetes, as well as increased emphasis on blood pressure control and lifestyle factors such as not smoking and maintaining a healthy body weight, may improve the risk profile of most of the chronic complications. In the developed world, diabetes is the most significant cause of adult blindness in the non-elderly and the leading cause of non-traumatic amputation in adults, and diabetic nephropathy is the main illness requiring renal dialysis in the United States.

In 2000, according to the World Health Organization, at least 171 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, or 2.8% of the population. Its incidence is increasing rapidly, and it is estimated that by the year 2030, this number will almost double.

The Centers for Disease Control has termed the change an epidemic. The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse estimates that diabetes costs $132 billion in the United States alone every year. About 5%–10% of diabetes cases in North America are type 1, with the rest being type 2. The fraction of type 1 in other parts of the world differs. Most of this difference is not currently understood. The American Diabetes Association cite the 2003 assessment of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) that 1 in 3 Americans born after 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.

According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 18.3% (8.6 million) of Americans age 60 and older have diabetes. Diabetes mellitus prevalence increases with age, and the numbers of older persons with diabetes are expected to grow as the elderly population increases in number. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) demonstrated that, in the population over 65 years old, 18% to 20% have diabetes, with 40% having either diabetes or its precursor form of impaired glucose tolerance.

Indigenous populations in first world countries have a higher prevalence and increasing incidence of diabetes than their corresponding non-indigenous populations. In Australia the age-standardised prevalence of self-reported diabetes in Indigenous Australians is almost 4 times that of non-indigenous Australians. Preventative community health programs such as Sugar Man are showing some success in tackling this problem.

Global Fund must resolve leadership, governance issues by end of 2012

"Good news about the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has been sorely lacking these past few years as the organization has faced corruption allegations, financial woes, and internal reform," a Lancet editorial states. "Yet, despite these challenging times, the Fund remains operational and continues its important work," it writes, adding, "Last week, it announced that its Board had approved 45 new two-year grants, from 37 countries, totaling $419.2 million." Noting "[t]he approved projects were part of the Fund's Transitional Funding Mechanism, established in November 2011 to ensure that essential programs did not face disruption at a time when there was uncertainty about availability of resources," the editorial continues, "The mechanism is commendable and the funding news immensely welcome."

"However, the continued financing of such projects -- i.e., the survival of the Fund -- remains at risk," the editorial states. "It needs to enter a phase of stabilization," it continues, writing, "Two issues must be addressed for this to happen." "First, the Fund needs to establish strong leadership," it writes, noting "Gabriel Jaramillo, general manager of the Global Fund, has been heading the organization since the departure of Michel Kazatchkine as executive director in March," but "this is an interim appointment." It continues, "Second, the Fund needs to re-establish the confidence of donors, which has steadily eroded over the past few years." The editorial concludes, "The Global Fund should seek to resolve these leadership and governance issues, by the end of 2012 at the latest. Its goal must be to secure its future and that of the vital health programs it delivers" (9/8).

What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is a malignant growth on the skin which can have many causes. The most common skin cancers are basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer, and melanoma. Skin cancer generally develops in the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin), so a tumor is usually clearly visible. This makes most skin cancers detectable in the early stages.

There are three common and likely types of skin cancer, each of which is named after the type of skin cell from which it arises. Unlike many other cancers, including those originating in the lung, pancreas, and stomach, only a small minority of those afflicted will actually die of the disease.

Skin cancer represents the most commonly diagnosed cancer, surpassing lung, breasts, colorectal and prostate cancer. It is the most common cancer in the young population (20 – 39 age group).

It is estimated that approximately 85% of cases are caused by too much sun. Non-melanoma skin cancers are the most common skin cancers. The majority of these are called basal cell carcinomas. These are usually localized growths caused by excessive cumulative exposure to the sun and do not tend to spread.

Merkel cell Carcinomas most often fast-growing, non-tender, red or purple skin colored bumps that is not painful or itchy. They may be mistaken for a cyst or cancer type.

Make it a habit to regularly checks each month. Purpose is to make You be "familiar" with my own breasts. Do checks a few days after the menstrual phase is completed. If you've not experienced the menstrual cycle, select a single date in each month and always do the examination date.
Do not panic directly if you feel a lump. Most women have some areas that are indeed notable in their breasts naturally.
The breast has a number of areas with different characteristics. For example, the exterior of the top (near the armpit) will most likely have lumps and bumps. The bottom probably feels like sandy beaches/Rocky. Area below the nipple can tastes like a collection of grains. Other parts may be different. Its important you understand the characteristics of each area. Note whether there is anything abnormal in certain areas. For example, in an area that usually feels like sand beaches, whether there is a bulge like a rock feels? This is abnormal and should be a concern. If any suspicious changes and persist for a month full of or being added badly over time, consult your doctor!
Create a diary/journal to record the results of Your examination. This tape can be a "map of the breast", complete with a record of when and where you feel the strangeness in the breast. Especially in the early days, this journal can help you to remember the terms of what may be considered normal in your breasts. Sometimes suddenly emerged bump, but then disappears again. This is normal because your body is changing along with the menstrual cycle. Enzalutamide Gets FDA Nod for Late-Stage Prostate Cancer

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved enzalutamide (formerly known as MDV3100) to treat men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer that has spread or recurred.

Developed by Astellas Pharma US Inc and Medivation Inc, the drug will be sold as Xtandi. It was reviewed under the FDA's priority review program, which provides for an expedited 6-month review for drugs that may offer major advances in treatment or that provide a treatment when no adequate therapy exists.

Xtandi, which was approved 3 months sooner than expected, is one of a new class of androgen inhibitors designed to interfere with the ability of testosterone to bind to prostate cancer cells.

According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 241,740 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 28,170 will die from the disease in 2012.

"The need for additional treatment options for advanced prostate cancer continues to be important for patients," Richard Pazdur, MD, director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement posted on the FDA Web site.

"Xtandi is the latest treatment for this disease to demonstrate its ability to extend a patient's life," Dr. Pazdur added.

Early End to Pivotal Trial

As reported by Medscape Medical News, in a study of nearly 1200 patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer previously treated with docetaxel-based chemotherapy, enzalutamide significantly prolonged median survival compared with placebo (18.4 vs 13.6 months; hazard ratio, 0.63; P < .0001).

The pivotal phase 3 trial, known as A Study Evaluating the Efficacy of the Investigational Drug MDV3100 (AFFIRM) was stopped early. The results were published online August 15 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"This is an important new drug," Marc Garnick, MD, clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, with an oncology practice at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, in Boston, Massachusetts, told Medscape Medical News on publication. "It will add greatly to the treatments that can be offered to our patients with advanced prostate cancer," he added. Dr. Garnick was not involved in the AFFIRM trial.

The FDA notes that the most common adverse effects observed with enzalutamide were "weakness or fatigue, back pain, diarrhea, joint pain, hot flush, tissue swelling, musculoskeletal pain, headache, upper respiratory infections, dizziness, spinal cord compression and cauda equina syndrome, muscular weakness, difficulty sleeping, lower respiratory infections, blood in urine, tingling sensation, anxiety, and high blood pressure."

In addition, seizures occurred in approximately 1% of those receiving enzalutamide. These patients stopped the drug. Patients with a history of seizure were excluded from the study, as were patients with an underlying brain injury with loss of consciousness, a temporary decrease in blood to the brain within the past 12 months, stroke, brain metastases, an abnormal connection of the arteries and veins in the brain, or patients taking medications that may lower the seizure threshold. "The safety of Xtandi is unknown in patients with these conditions," the FDA says.

Fixed Drug Eruptions

Adverse reactions to medications are common and often manifest as a cutaneous eruption.

Drug-induced cutaneous disorders frequently display a characteristic clinical morphology such as morbilliform exanthem, urticaria, hypersensitivity syndrome, pseudolymphoma, photosensitivity, pigmentary changes, acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, lichenoid dermatitis, vasculitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or fixed drug eruption (FDE).

The term fixed drug eruption describes the development of one or more annular or oval erythematous patches as a result of systemic exposure to a drug; these reactions normally resolve with hyperpigmentation and may recur at the same site with reexposure to the drug. Repeated exposure to the offending drug may cause new lesions to develop in addition to "lighting up" the older hyperpigmented lesions.

Several variants of fixed drug eruption have been described, based on their clinical features and the distribution of the lesions.These include the following:

Abstract and Introduction

Abstract

Adverse drug reactions are common and can range from benign and self-limiting to life-threatening with a high morbidity and mortality. Prompt identification and accurate diagnosis of an adverse drug reaction is therefore essential in order to optimally manage the patient, averting possible significant complications. Many adverse reactions to drugs involve the skin, and therefore essential knowledge of such reactions by both dermatologists and nondermatologists is of paramount importance. In this article a comprehensive review is given on a wide range of cutaneous adverse drug reactions encompassing both benign and more serious reactions, in addition to some less common adverse reactions. The article provides a tabular summary of some of the main features of such reactions, in addition to a separate table with a list of the common culprit drugs identified for each cutaneous adverse reaction.

Introduction

Cutaneous adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are the most common and most reported form of adverse reactions to drugs, representing approximately 30% of all reported cases.^[1] Its incidence in hospitalized patients has been estimated to be approximately 2%.^[2] In the USA alone, it is estimated that ADRs (both cutaneous and noncutaneous) affect nearly 2 million patients each year, leading to nearly 100,000 deaths.^[3] Several factors predispose to ADRs and include: advanced age, polypharmacy, female gender, concomitant infection (particularly HIV) and genetic predisposition.^[4] ADRs are often wrongly termed allergic; both immune-mediated and non-immune-mediated mechanisms are involved, and many are poorly understood. All four classical Gell and Coombs types of hypersensitivity reactions play a role in drug eruptions; in some cases it is the reactive drug metabolites acting as a hapten rather than the parent drug that acts as an antigen for T-cell activation.^[5] Drug-specific CD4 and CD8 positive T cells recognize drugs through their T-cell receptors in an MHC-dependent way.

The classical – and still widely accepted – pharmacological classification of ADRs was described by Rawlins and Thompson who divided ADRs into two types; type A reactions are dose dependent and predictable on the basis of the drug's known pharmacological action, and type B reactions are idiosyncratic and not necessarily dose dependent.^[6]

Intrinsic factors, such as genetic variation in drug metabolism or HLA associations, can increase the risk of ADRs.^[5] More detailed examples of the pharmacogenetics of ADRs will be discussed in this article.

Last week, Paige shared the honest truth about her previous interactions with Alison, and a lurking Jenna set the stage for the pretty little audience to point the finger at “Pig Skin.” A highly distraught Hanna seems to indicate the death of… I want to time stamp this paragraph for 8:05 pm to prove my inner Matlock right.

But, the summer finale, and its opening death scene did little to sell this viewer on a dead Paige or, even, a killer Paige. As the show takes us to two days prior, the ladies are rehearsing to reveal the “truth” to Emily that paints Paige as the person behind the murder and mayhem.

During a cozy scene, Em reveals to Paige that the ladies believe there is someone helping Mona. And moments later a mysterious text comes in to Paige sending her to the Rosewood Cemetery. Unfortunately, it’s not on an iPhone or Android, so a thumb manages to hide the rest of the message other than the word “hurt.”

Meanwhile, the ladies are discussing Paige missing Spanish class when a text advising the group to “stand by b*tches” or risk Emily getting hurt arrives, as Mona, disguised as a nurse, walks out of the hospital.

She winds up at a light house where a tussle between the two breaks out and a gun shot rings out but based on earlier scenes, Emily is certainly alive. Who got shot? Caleb, the one who insisted on bringing a gun along for the ride earlier. Caleb is rolled out on a stretcher with a gun shot wound to the torso but appears to be alive. The deceased is none other than Nate.

Don’t worry, there’s still a killer on the loose. The ladies receive a text of confirmation when Garette’s is set free.

And, the lies continue as Mona returns to the hospital. And “A” is revealed. It’s TOBY.

In a surprise announcement, aides confirmed only that Romney would be in Tampa, but the expectation is that he will attend the convention as his wife Ann gives the primetime speech on the storm-delayed opening night.

“She’s going to do terrific,” Romney told reporters in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire as they emerged from a preparation session.

“I like my speech. I really like Ann’s speech. Our sons are already in Tampa and they say it’s terrific there, a lot of great friends, and we’re looking forward to a great convention,” the White House hopeful said.

What was scripted as a raucous beginning to four days of choreographed political theater opened with a whimper on Monday as Isaac, poised to become a hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, hogged the spotlight.

Forecasts put the storm on a direct path to hit New Orleans late on Tuesday, seven years almost to the day after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city and killed 1,800 people in one of the country’s worst-ever natural disasters.

In Tampa, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus declared a recess to a largely empty hall less than two minutes after opening proceedings, saying thoughts and prayers must be with the people of the Gulf Coast.

Thousands of jubilant delegates were to formally nominate Romney to take on President Barack Obama in the November 6 election. That roll call will now take place on Tuesday afternoon, possibly with Romney in attendance.

Lying neck-and-neck with Obama in the polls 10 weeks before an election that should have been his for the taking given the sour economic times, Romney hopes to use the event to boost his image and win over undecided voters.

Many Americans do not tune in until the convention season starts — Obama and the Democrats hold theirs next week in Charlotte, North Carolina — so Tampa provides Romney with a golden opportunity to reintroduce himself.

“For the Romney folks this is a chance to speak to a lot of voters who have only paid casual attention so far and will tune in to his keynote address on Thursday,” Charles Franklin, politics professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, told AFP.

“Some will be looking for the first time, others will be reconsidering and open to some change,” he said.

The run-up to the convention was marred by incendiary remarks from Todd Akin, a Republican congressman seeking a Senate seat in Missouri, who suggested women’s bodies spontaneously prevent pregnancy after a “legitimate rape.”

The Romney camp — which roundly condemned the remarks — is anxious to get back on message, pressing the case that the former Massachusetts governor and successful businessman understands the economy better than Obama and knows how to get the country back on track.

Ann Romney’s speech will try to boost his likability by highlighting his human side, while former Olympians will take to the floor on Thursday to remind Americans that he saved the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics from bankruptcy.

But the storm could still cast a pall over Romney’s big moment, and he must tread a fine line between promoting his political ambitions and showing sensitivity to those in harm’s way.

“In purely political terms, there is a lot competing for news attention, the convention versus this hurricane,” said Diane Heith, associate professor of politics at Saint John’s University in New York.

“The more significant the weather event, the harder it will be for Romney to get out the message the Republican party planned.”

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who was due to speak at the convention, was forced to stay home and prepare for disaster, while vice presidential pick Paul Ryan delayed his arrival in Tampa until Tuesday because of the storm.

Romney aides promised the show would go on largely as planned after they frantically repackaged four days of events into three.

Party officials stress that the main night-time speaking slots on Tuesday and Wednesday — culminating in Romney’s acceptance speech on Thursday after an introduction by rising Hispanic star Marco Rubio — remain unchanged.

Obama will break with tradition and campaign hard through the event, countering Romney’s bid to grab an uninterrupted chance to make his case to voters.

National polls have shown a close race between the rivals for weeks. A Washington Post and ABC News poll out Monday showed Romney one point ahead, 47 percent to 46 percent.

Other surveys show Obama leading in some of the most important swing states that could decide the election.

Once you have a firm diagnosis there are then a number of treatment options open to you and here we look at seven common forms of alternative therapy.

1. Ayurveda. Two popular treatments are to mix Punarnava, Gokshura and Shilajit herbal powders together and then to take just one quarter of a teaspoon each day mixed into a little warm water. Alternatively, you could try horsetail, ginseng or hibiscus tea and these can be taken three or four times a day.

2. Reflexology. Reflexology sessions, which direct energy to specific pressure points on the body, begin with relaxing your whole body and then shifting the focus of the reflex to those areas of your body which are in the greatest need of assistance. In this case that means directing energy to the prostate, adrenal, endocrine, pituitary, parathyroid and thyroid glands as well as to the pancreas with the reflex in your hands or feet.

You can also take a daily zinc supplement.

4. Imagery. Imagery is closely linked to hypnosis and both use positive visualization techniques to effect positive change. One exercise which has been shown to be beneficial to some enlarged prostate sufferers is to close your eyes, breathe out three times and then imagine entering into your body. Once inside, find your prostate gland and slowly examine it from every angle before putting it into a thin golden drawstring net and pulling the drawstring so that the net fits snuggly around the prostate. At the same time picture your prostate gland shrinking back to its normal size. This exercise should be practiced twice each day for about three or four minutes for three weeks and then left for one week, before repeating the process over about six months.

5. Hydrotherapy. For many enlarged prostate sufferers a daily hot bath taken for about a month does the trick. Simply sit in a hot bath with water up to your navel for thirty to forty-five minutes and then follow this immediately with a cold bath or shower.

6. Vitamin and Mineral Therapy. Herbal medication containing a specific mix of vitamins and minerals can also help with the treatment of an enlarged prostate. The vitamin and mineral mix, which is taken twice a day, should contain 200 international units of vitamin E, 30 milligrams of zinc, 1 milligram of copper, half a tablespoon of flaxseed oil and 160 milligrams of saw palmetto.

7. Yoga. Some Yoga poses can increase the blood flow to your groin and so relieve certain prostate problems. Two poses in particular which will benefit prostate problems are the 'knee squeeze' and the 'seated sun' together with the 'stomach lock'. If you are not familiar with yoga then there are many excellent illustrated books available and you should be able to pick one or two up at your local library without any problem. You should be aware however that it is not advisable to practice the 'stomach lock' if you are suffering from hypertension, hiatal hernia, ulcers or heart disease.

For many people these alternative techniques seem on the surface to be of little if any value at all, but for anyone who is familiar with alternative medicine, or such things as ancient Chinese medical practices, it is no surprise to find that they really can work.

There are a number of natural and alternative treatments for the problem of an enlarged prostate and two of these are the use of pumpkin seeds and saw palmetto.

Saw palmetto is also widely used for prostrate problems. Found in the southeastern states, saw palmetto is a small palm tree the seeds of which formed an important part of the diet of Seminole Indians.

Saw palmetto works by turning testosterone into dihyrotestosterone which is precisely the process used in Proscar, which is one of the very few over-the-counter treatments approved for prostate problems by the Food and Drug Administration. Its essential benefit is that it increases urinary flow, reduces the problem of residual urine and, as a consequence of both, also lessens the frequency of urination.

As with most natural treatments opinions vary widely as to the effectiveness of saw palmetto, but there have been a number of studies carried out over the years which have clearly shown that it does produce a significant benefit. In one study, a clinical study involving more than two thousand men in Germany suffering from benign prostatic hypertrophy, a daily dose of just one or two grams of saw palmetto seeds produced a substantial easing of symptoms.

These are of course just two of the many alternative cures available but there is no doubt that these and similar natural treatments can and do work. Just as an example, it is thought that about thirty percent of American men suffer from an undiagnosed prostate cancer by the time they reach the age of sixty compared to just one percent of Artic Inuit men at the same age. There may of course be several reasons for this enormous difference, but one difference which most doctors consider to be very significant is simply the fact the diet of Artic Inuit men is high in fish oil.

So, if you are suffering from an enlarged prostate then, before you turn to your doctor for treatment, you may find that simply adjusting your diet and looking at your intake of various vitamins and minerals may be all that is needed.

PSA Tests - Important Or A Waste Of Time And Money?

More and more it is becoming known how unreliable PSA tests are for accurately indicating whether or not someone has prostate cancer. Does this mean they are a waste of time and money? Or should you continue to get the test?

If you asked ten different people those questions, you would likely get ten different answers.

But the reality is, PSA tests, while useful, are not something you should take to the bank as being 100% accurate when it comes to you having prostate cancer or other related health problems.

It is true that men with elevated levels of PSA in their blood due often have prostate problems.

But, there are also many men who have high PSA levels who have nothing wrong whatsoever with their prostates. On other hand, there are also many men who have had low levels of PSA in their blood who were found to have prostate cancer. But, because they had a false sense of security (because they thought they were safe due to their low PSA number), they ended up either dying or the cancer spread.

Either way is bad.

And, this is one reason not to rely on the test for anything.

Yes, it can be a useful tool.

And in as much as you can gauge whether your PSA levels are trending up or down over time, it can be a good thing.

But don't take the results as "gospel" that anything is right or wrong.

It's just one of many ways to test for prostate cancer.

And that is why PSA tests and their results should be taken with a grain of salt.

Why do I say that?

Because they tested vitamin E (one of the more popular prostate cancer vitamins) in isolation.

Well, guess what?

Vitamins don't work in isolation.

They are not found in nature in isolation, and instead work synergistically with other nutrients and minerals. Take a piece of fruit, for example. If you just take the sugar out of the fruit and consume it, that sugar is no good for you. But when used in conjunction with the fiber and other vitamins and minerals in that fruit, it suddenly does have nutritional value.

It is the same with any other kind of vitamin, too.

If you get your vitamin E in a multi vitamin made in a lab, you are probably not going to get the maximum benefit.

But, if you get it via eating fish or certain nuts, in its natural state, the way God created it, then it has far more power and "punch."

And that is what the prostate cancer study failed to take into account.

Anyway, this is something to keep in mind if you are interested in prostate cancer vitamins.
