SOUNDVIEW, BRONX (WPIX)— The intersection of Randall and Rosedale Avenues in the Soundview section of the Bronx was full of heartache Wednesday, a day after police say an 8-year-old boy was shot while he was standing on the corner.

Just feet away the scene - there's an old memorial for a local resident lost to yet another act of senseless violence. Next to the corner store - not far away from a garbage can filled with yellow crime scene tape, there's a "RIP" graffiti display in memory someone else who died on these tough streets.

Police say the shooter in Tuesday night's close call was riding a bike as he fired off a shot into the crowd. The boy was hit in the arm. So far Wednesday, he's in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital.

Residents who live in the adjacent Soundview public housing project say they're fed up with not feeling safe outside their homes.

"That's horrible. This neighborhood is horrible," Mildred Cruz told PIX11 News. "I've been living here for about seven years and there's always something going on in this neighborhood."

"They have flowers here all the time," Cruz continued. "This is a hotspot. Who knows what happens here? It's really sad."

Police have not made any arrests yet. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call Crimestoppers. All calls will remain confidential.

Overview (Demographics): In July 2010, 42 million people in the United States, or 13.6 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population, were Black. They are the second largest minority population, following the Hispanic/Latino population. In 2010, the many Blacks lived in the South (20 percent), while 36 percent of white population lived in the South. The ten states with the largest Black population in 2010 were New York, Florida, Texas, Georgia, California,North Carolina, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio. Louisiana is no longer in the top 10, as a result of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Combined, these 10 states represented 58% of the total Black population. Of the ten largest places in the United States with 100,000 or more population, Detroit, Michigan has the largest proportion of Blacks, 84%, followed by Jackson, Mississippi (80%).
Educational Attainment: In 2010, as compared to Whites 25 years and over, a lower percentage of Blacks had earned at least a high school diploma (82 percent and 90 percent, respectively). More Black women than Black men had earned at least a bachelor's degree (19.3 percent compared with 15.6 percent), while among non-Hispanic Whites, a higher proportion of men than women had earned at least a bachelor's degree (32 percent and 30 percent, respectively).

Economics: According to the 2010 Census Bureau report, the average African-American family median income was $32,068 in comparison to $54,620 for non-Hispanic White families. In 2010, the U.S. Census bureau reported that 27.4 percent of African-Americans in comparison to 9.9 percent of non-Hispanic Whites were living at the poverty level. The current unemployment rate for Blacks was twice that for non-Hispanic Whites (15.8 percent and 7.5 percent, respectively). This finding was consistent for both men and women.

Insurance Coverage: In 2010, 44 percent of African-Americans in comparison to 62 non-Hispanic Whites used employer-sponsored health insurance. Also in 2010, 28 percent of African-Americans in comparison to 11 percent of non-Hispanic Whites relied on Medicaid, public health insurance. Finally, 20.8 percent of African-Americans in comparison to 11.7 percent of non-Hispanic whites were uninsured.

Health Conditions: In 2007, the death rate for African Americans was higher than Whites for heart diseases, stroke, cancer, asthma, influenza and pneumonia, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and homicide.

Data showed that women under the age of 50 had twice the mortality of men after having a heart attack. Variances likely reflect increased severity of the disease in younger women.
Sudden death is more common among women with heart attack.
Deaths from cardiovascular diseases in women exceed the total number of deaths caused by the next 16 causes.
60% of women erroneously listed cancer as the leading cause of death among women. Deaths from all cancers in the USA are half as common as deaths from cardiovascular disease.
Only 31% of women know that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the USA.
On the average, women take 2-4 hours longer than men to respond to symptoms of heart attack, limiting the beneficial use of some newer treatments like clot busters that work best within the first hour after onset of pain or discomfort.

At-Risk:

71% of women experience early warning signs of heart attack with sudden onset of extreme weakness that feels like the flu - often with no chest pain at all. Medical professionals are challenged to respond to women's milder symptoms, acting with insufficient guidelines.

Nearly two-thirds of the deaths from heart attacks in women occur among those who have no history of chest pain.

Smoking, diabetes and abnormal blood lipids erase a woman’s estrogen protection.

Women who smoke risk having a heart attack 19 years earlier than non-smoking women.

Women with hypertension experience a risk of developing CHD 3.5 times that of females with normal blood pressure. High blood pressure is more common in women taking oral contraceptives, especially in obese women.

Women with diabetes have more than double the risk of heart attack than non- diabetic women. Diabetes doubles the risk of a second heart attack in women but not in men. Diabetes affects many more women than men after the age of 45.

23% of white women, 38% of black women, and 36% Mexican American women are obese. Obesity leads to an increased risk of premature death due to cardiovascular problems like hypertension, stroke and CAD.

The age-adjusted rate of heart disease for African American women is 72% higher than for white women, while African American women ages 55-64 are twice as likely as white women to have a heart attack and 35% more likely to suffer CAD.

Marital stress worsens the prognosis in women with heart disease.

Pentti Arajarvi, the husband of the President of Finland, Tarja Halonen, seems to have found a couple of things more interesting to keep his attention than the formal gathering he was attending in Copenhagen.

While attending a dinner event in Copenhagen, the 63-year-old 1st hubby appeared to turn his attention to something he found more appetizing, but wasn't on the menu--the breasts (or maybe the necklace which happened to be accessorizing her breasts) of Denmark's Princess Mary who was sitting right next to him. He definitely had a bird's eye view.

From his reaction when the princess turns around and catches him in the act, it seems that he was eyeing the buffet of breasts stuffed in a low-cut black sleeveless dress.

Also, she must have felt that he was peering at her baby food too, because she seems to calmly adjust her dress to signify that those girls are not on the menu! Peep it~ (no pun intended...lol!)

The National Enquirer plastered the front page of its tabloid, allegedly of the late Whitney Houston in her golden-silver casket, wearing a purple dress, golden slippers and jewelry said to be worth half a million dollars, including a diamond broach and earrings.

The picture was reportedly taken at the private viewing inside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, New Jersey where her family attended a private wake last Friday.

Beauty and the Geek concept pants feature a keyboard sewn right into your lap, a pocket for your mouse, and even speakers.

It's official: the quest to design concept clothing for the modern day, tech-savvy, cafe-hopping hipster may finally have reached its logical extreme. Take as exhibit A these new jeans designed by Nieuwe Heren, featuring a wireless keyboard sewn right onto your lap.

The jeans don't just allow you to lounge while you type. They also come with a wireless mouse that's cleverly attached to a specially designed pocket. There are even a set of speakers sewn at the sides so that your music can follow you wherever you sit. (How "hip" is that?)

Aptly titled Beauty and the Geek, the pants might forever redefine the concept of a laptop computer. That, or they're destined to become a ridiculous fashion faux pas. Designers Erik de Nijs and Tim Smit are bold enough to take the risk.

"The idea was that you could log in to your computer and control it without sitting in a closed environment behind your desk," de Nijs told WebProNews.

On the fashion-plus side, they appear to be made of some pretty slick denim, and the orange stitching is stylish as well as consistent with the concept (it's meant to have the look of a circuit board). On the down side, though, it's impossible to ignore the large, fully functional keyboard that's sure to promptly draw all eyes straight to the wearer's crotch.

There may also be a few awkward functional kinks that come with wearing a keyboard across your loins. For one, excessive typing could become strangely arousing. It's also not an area you want to accidentally electrify in the event of a coffee spill.

The good news about the keyboard, however, is that it's not as heavy and cumbersome as it may look. Those of you who like to bust a few moves while jamming to iTunes should have plenty of flexibility to do so.

"With the flexible keyboard, small speakers, and small mouse, they are only a little bit heavier than your regular jeans," explained de Nijs.

At the moment the jeans cannot be purchased at retail stores, but if and when they do go to market, the estimated price would be about $400.

In the end, though, the success of the design will likely depend more on the fashion police than its functionality. Is this design visionary and futuristic, or are the pants forever unwearable? Tech-savvy hipsters like to think of themselves as pretty cool cats, but are they cool enough to wear a keyboard over their crotch? That's the question.

Around 5:00pm last Wednesday, Verdon Lamont Taylor--6'4, 300 lbs--was seen on surveillance cameras stripping in the middle of a Walmart parking lot.

Taylor takes off his socks and all of his clothes and then nonchalantly walks into a Wal-mart in Exton, Pennsylvania and shocked shoppers trying to avoid him.

Once inside, police say Taylor walked up to the customer service line where a bag of returned goods sat on the table. Taylor pulled out a pair of socks and proceeded to put them on.

"There was one employee who got a coat and followed him, which is kind of a brave thing to do," said Detective Pezick. "I think most people were startled and just tried to avoid him."

Police responded and placed the man under arrest. Taylor allegedly spit on an officer as he was taken away from Walmart on a gurney. Police had to use a Taser to subdue him.

"He wouldn't follow commands, at which point they did need to deploy a Taser, and he was taken into custody," Detective Pezick said.

Investigators don't believe Taylor suffers from any sort of mental illness. They believe he may have been under the influence of drugs.

Taylor faces one count of aggravated assault for spitting on that officer. He also faces indecent assault and other related charges.

He remains behind bars unable to post $50,000 cash bail.

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Authorities allege that the quest to make methamphetamine has led to an unlikely alliance -- a white supremacist and a black inner-city gang member.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 38-year-old Aryan Nations member Richard Treis and 22-year-old Robert "Biz" Swinney are among seven people facing federal charges for conspiracy to make meth, distribution of meth and other drug-related crimes.

Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration say Treis joined the Aryan Nations while in a federal prison for previous meth-related crimes. They say Swinney is a documented gang member.

Police say Swinney mobilized at least 150 people over two years to sidestep purchase restrictions on decongestants containing pseudoephedrine, a key meth ingredient, and provide the pills to meth cooks like Treis.

100-Year-Old Cougar Marries Her 87-Year-Old Boytoy

Dana Jackson turned 100 on February 12 and married her younger boyfriend, 87-year-old Bill Stauss, whom she met two years ago at their nursing home.

Family and friends gathered from all over to celebrate this special geriatric union at Rosewood Health Care Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

This is Jackson's fourth marriage, but to her family it's still a very special one.

"I feel 50," Jackson told BG Daily News . "I don't feel 100." Jackson tied the knot for the 1st time, 85 years ago at the age of 15.

Upon seeing his new bride, the groom shed a few tears of happiness. "It's been 56 years since I had that happen to me," Stauss said. "All I wanted was a close look. When I saw her close up, I saw how beautiful she was."

The couple met two years ago at an adult day care center.

"I think it's wonderful. I would have never imagined it, but I'm just so proud. I'm happy, and I'm thrilled that she's happy. That's all that matters," said daughter Jessie Miller.
