I took this photo the other day, and really decided I liked it a lot. Yes, it’s a self portrait. Yes, it’s supposed to tell a story, and no, I’m not a prescription drug addict. This photo is the story of my past year. I will be going in shortly for my 1 year 3 month post cancer scan.

I think photos like this are important. They tell a story. They help us to remember where we came from, and in some cases, hopefully where we’re going.

The medicines in this photo are a just a small portion of what is left. I didn’t photograph all of it, and have discarded most of it.

I took this photo as a reminder to myself of how strong I am and can be. What photos tell your story?

II" width="600" height="384" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-150" />

So, I shot this photo a few months ago now, and am really just posting it for the first time. This is the same rock, in Pacific City. I think, from now on, I’ll stick with calling it Chief Kiwanda Rock. Every rock is Haystack Rock. Time to make mine different (yes, I am now considering it my rock). If you don’t understand the reference here, just check out the last post, it will all make sense.

So, this photo was clearly taken at night. The exposure time is 45 minutes, thus the star trails. It is one exposure. The two things that glow like sinking suns in the background are actually fishing boats that stayed fairly stationary for that long of an exposure. Perhaps I like this shot more than others because of the time that I have invested into it, but I most definitely think that it is a unique view of the Pacific City rock if nothing else.

Like the star shot? Just wait until I decide to post my next night shot at Chief Kiwanda Rock, here in Pacific City.

So, my next several posts will be images of the haystack rock in Pacific City, Oregon. The rock, which locals say sits almost a mile out from shore, has an estimated height of 340 feet. It can be seen from miles away, and definitely acts as the main landmark in Pacific City.

The story goes that before being called Haystack Rock, it was called Chief Kiwanda Rock, named after the head of one of the local native tribes, called the Nestugga.

Regardless, it is a fantastic draw for photographers. Every time I head to the beach, I find myself amongst many others with a tripod in their hands and/or a ton of weight around their neck. So, the challenge becomes shooting it in a unique way. I’m hoping that I have successfully done that.

Welcome to the new blog for Adam Mathias Photography. After revamping the main website, I figured that the blog should go along with it.

I redesigned the site to focus more heavily on art photography and editorial portraiture and less heavily on weddings (though if you are looking for a wedding photographer, I am still most definitely open and willing to taking new clients).

This redesign just goes with the push that I will soon be making to get into more galleries throughout Washington and Oregon.

I am still working on the design of the blog section of the site, so please be patient with me if things seem off a bit. Please feel free to drop me an email and let me know if they are off, too, so that I can address them more quickly and easily.

So, without further ado, here goes the new website and new blog!
