We are excited to host Jozef van Wissem, a Dutch composer / lute player celebrated for his integration of classical pieces, inventive compositional techniques (such as playing traditional melodies backwards, creating musical palindromes), electronic improvisation, and field recordings. His recent collaboration with British guitarist James Blackshaw, Bretheren of the Free Spirit, was released earlier this year on Important Records. David Johnson and INTERSECT

Dave recently finished framing, hanging, labeling and stressing for INTERSECT, a group show at the Des Lee Gallery. The reception is this Friday...featuring new work by Dave himself, as well as Patrick Renschen and Jamie Kreher. Bring your ID, and you'll get a special wristband that allows you to have a glass of wine. Hope to see you there.

Please join us for a reception for INTERSECT at the Des Lee gallery. INTERSECT is a photography exhibit concerning the urban environment featuring St. Louis based photographers Patrick Renschen, Jamie Kreher, and David Johnson.

The reception will be on Friday July 11th from 6-9 pm
Des Lee Gallery is located 1627 Washington Ave.

Refreshments will be served.

Open Studio @ Open Lot

Open Studio is fast approaching. And while I'm sure everyone would like to know about how we decided who would clean what, where to put this or that, I'll just include the details:

A city wide event featuring artists from the greater St. Louis area, Open Studios is organized by the Contemporary Art Museum. Our scheduled day is Sunday, July 20th, from 10 am until 4 pm.

Our plans include a listening station with samples of music from bands we've hosted in the past, as well as a presentation about who we are and what we do. The best part? Up close and personal with the artists-what they do, what they're reading, favorite colors, you name it.

We hope to see you there, and more details will follow.

Personally, think this is going to be really amazing. I have never seen an event of this kind in St. Louis, and I certainly can't think of a better way to spend your Monday evening. P.S. crossword depicted is not the actual crossword of Ben Segal...but we have to have some imagery here.

Open Lot's summertime rash of activities continues Monday, June 23rd, with
just the kind of interdisciplinary mash-up that we all crave. Does it have
physics demonstrations? Yes, yes it does. Literature via crossword puzzle?
Yes, most definitely. Maybe some music? Yup.

Jim Atkinson- Jim is a physicist working on quantum computing at the Amherst
College Physics lab. He'll be doing various (and totally safe)
science demonstrations. It's going to be kind of like Mr. Wizard or Bill
Nye. Also, he can talk to anyone about quantum mechanics if they're into
that. And you know you are.

Ben Segal's new experimental prose book is being released in late Spring by
No Record Press. The book, 132 Stories, takes the form of a crossword
puzzle. Ben filled in each of the white squares on a standard crossword
puzzle with paragraphs. Each paragraph acts as part of an across and a down
answer, as in a traditional puzzle. Each of these 'answers' functions as a
short narrative, creating a web of 132 such narratives over a 20 sq. foot
grid. He will present the book (which is published in the form of a
fold-out, like a map) and also possibly reading from a tour-only collection
of short stories that have been previously published in small journals.

Tuesday night's alright for fighting...and modified guitars, raga and banjo.

Minneapolis, MN. Winding raga style improv on 21 string modified banjo and modified guitar. "It isn't surprising that his banjo doesn't sound like what we expect, given that it looks like a mutant of its traditional form, modified heavily by Metzger to create a 21 string monster, sometimes bowed, sometimes plucked, that makes use of sympathtetic drone strings a la some manner of alien sitar."

Bruno David: Leslie Laskey, Opening Reception 6-9

Leslie Laskey demonstrates again that working in the studio is crucial to a creative mind and longevity. His new work explores and engages us in images found in things and places. Showing us how they work, finding sensuality in surfaces and rich mystifying colors. Laskey never separates his art from its viewer as he always engages them in the process of his work.

Opening Reception for Cary Horton: Structures and Cells 7-10.

Cary Horton examines odd juxtapositions of context, objects, fact, fantasy, architectural and organic elements through a series of photographs that play with traditional film techniques. "As humans leave more and more of a mark on nature, what is natural seems to be almost absurd and out of place, such as seeing birds trapped in a Home Depot or a hawk hunting along the interstate? More and more, human contact with the actual natural world seems startling and pseudo-natural has become our authentic experience of nature, such as rock climbing indoors, audio CD's of 'sounds of nature' etc."

John Sarra: Sad smiles and tears of joy

John Sarra was born in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1972. He received his BA (Studio art) from the College of Charleston in 1994, and went on to earn his MFA (Painting) from Washington University in 1997. He lives and works in Saint Louis, Missouri, where he currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer in the Painting Department of Washington University.

Open Lot History

We received this photo via email from someone who loves the architecture in Lafayette Square. It was taken about a year ago, but looks like a photo from someone's family album-total early eighties tint. Our building looks the same today, minus the no parking sign. This building has been a stable, a bakery, a photography studio.

Previous owners had a vintage hardtop convertible they used to house in the garage-which is now our gallery area/project space. The hardtop was lowered and raised onto their ride via a pulley system still visible in the rafters of our main space.

Now the yeast factory houses Open Lot headquarters. Tune in next week for some renovation pictures...and a sneak preview for our opening on Friday, which is a return from Open Lot's winter hibernation. Even bearstronauts like ourselves need a break now and then.

Gale Davis People Will Know What Kind of People You Are

In this series of drawings, St. Louis native Gale Davis pulls from a multifaceted background in illustration, interior design, and bouncing at local bars. The results are hybrids - equal parts drawing, pattern play, and subversive character development. The pieces revolve around two social tropes - the "peacock" and the "mummy" - that will resonate with anyone who has ever observed the farce of urban nightlife.

Jonathan Lisenby People Empyrean

Jonathan Lisenby sets the stage for Gale Davis' character drawings with new "backdrop" paintings. The series focuses and expands on Davis' "mummy" as setting as well as character. Lisenby's empty outlines reveal the "mummy" as deathly and heavenly environment. Resembling coloring book pages with thick black outlines and oddly still, floating compositions, these paintings create a forceful imaginative space where the characters and viewer mingle.

Open Lot is a home space, a creative platform, and exercise in reform.

We host artists and musicians in a rehabbed Yeast Factory in Saint Louis' historic Lafayette Square neighborhood.

Our space holds an extensive visual arts library, working wood shop, artist studio space and gallery. Exhibitions are held on a month to month basis. Who we are: two architects, a printmaker, photographer, painter and a sculptor.

We heart art, and work to show compelling and underrepresented visual, audio, and conceptual projects within our space. Currently, we are renovating the space for our March exhibition. This involves building drywall platforms, painting, and using a hammer drill.
