Lone Star Book Festival was a Success! 5.29.2021 Downtown Seguin, Texas

The Lone Star Book Festival in the Downtown Square of Seguin, Texas today was a SUCCESS! The Indie Authors and I had a friendly, cool wholesome meal @the Power Plant Restaurant and Venue Friday night. Good times all around. The Book Festival Today had roughly 50 or so individual author, music, and art tents. All were surrounding a well manicured Seguin downtown square park with a beautiful fountain. The streets were blocked off, and the visiting patrons and book inquisitor guests were gracious and welcoming. The guests even bought books too. Multiple fellow authors told me they sold 15 books or more. The day started off cool, overcast and drizzly, but by 11 am or 12 noon there were blue skies and sunshine. Thanks to BookPeople for the bookmarks, and BookPeople Bumper stickers. There were so many visitors, they all got taken. ---gvm

Howdy;

First off, thank you to everyone who responded with their thoughts about the Lone Star Festival being canceled at the Seguin Events Complex.

Based on y’alls responses and working with the city we have come up with a program that will work in some format for everyone that had paid their fee.

First, for those who are not thrilled about the heat, we are going to participate in the Pecan Festival currently scheduled for October 30 & 31 (Halloween weekend). There is a discussion of moving it to the week before, so at this time it is NOT set in stone for that weekend.

Those that wanted to wait for cooler weather can have a table in our booths at this event. It will be limited to 10 authors only. So, if you are one of those authors wanting to wait for cooler weather, this is your event. NO additional fees or charges will be required, just email me with your request to be in that tent.

Now, for the majority of you authors that felt doing it on the square was a great option, we are doing it on May 29^th on the square. Just as above, you will NOT be paying any additional fees for this change. We will provide tents and tables as needed. If you do have your table, please bring it. We will ONLY be providing 4’ tables for this event. If you need bigger tables and have one, please plan on bringing it.

There will be access to electricity in small amounts, due to limited outlets. Perfect for charging your phones, tablets, etc. Not for long-term use.

We will be providing for large fans to help keep certain areas cooler than without the fan. We are expecting the highs to be in the 80’s, not currently expecting more than that. We will keep an eye on the temp as it gets closer to help adjust things as needed.

Because of the outside aspect, we are going to work with the musicians to create a time flow to still allow for readings in the center of the park, where they will also be playing.

Attached is a layout as it currently stands, with some adjustments as needed.

Finally, I need each author that wants to attend the May 29^th outdoor event to confirm they are on board with the adjustments, and if they feel having the event is best one day or two days. Of course, two days will increase our costs but may add to the fun of the Holiday weekend.

I have begun working with the Chamber and the schools to see what additional fun we can add to the event to make it as successful as we can.

Howdy & Happy New Year!

While we still recover from the COVID19 pandemic, we are looking forward to getting back out there and meeting our fans, and participating in new and exciting ventures. Our Twitter account is @LoneStarBF You can also, use the hashtag #LoneStarFestival and #SeguinTexas in your postings.

The Lone Star Festival is still on target to happen on May 29, 2021. We have created the first round of social media images both in GIF and JPG that are attached and ready for you to begin using. Let’s build towards a great event and getting people out on Memorial Day weekend for some FREE fun so they can buy up your books.

Just a quick recap, we are still planning a Friday night reception on May 28^th, we will post more information on the website as we get it more finalized.

The Saturday event is currently scheduled from 9 AM – 4 PM. I will be sending out notices to the authors in March or April to arrange book readings of 45-minute sessions each. We will have three categories, Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Children’s. A separate area is already established for those readings.

We are still looking for musicians to play outside in the patio area during the event. Having music inside would only cause sound issues that we have seen to not work well when authors are talking about their books.

We are working on providing lunch on that day and will keep you advised as it gets closer.

Texas Book Festival, Austin Texas Capitol Grounds & Building. I personally got to listen to Scott Pelley of 60 Minutes and CBS NEWS discuss his new Book. He thanked me for my stand up question about the relevance, pro's and con's of Social Media in today's news world. His panel and talk was very sharp, funny, honest, virtue filled and intelligent. Pelley's still going strong!

I got a Book Festival Program Signature from Joe Nick Patoski, Author of Austin to ATX. The weather was wonderful, the Booths friendly, and as usual the Festival was very awesome. There was an entire street, Congress Ave. devoted to kids and youths books. Hmm....Should I write a youth or kid book? Nah....

Some of the more Famous Authors speaking this year I was personally not able to witness but wished to, were Malcolm Gladwell, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, John Grisham & General William McRaven.

Anonymous said…I love this post. I am actually one to interact w/ a broad mix of others. I have an affinity for wild ideas and diverse/dynamic people from all walks of life. I'm around a lot of people a lot but I also like to be on my own to be able to meet strangers, reinvent myself in a way. But I guess u can always do that no matter if with friends or strangers. Thanks for your thoughts. It's fun to look back thru past experiences/relationships/circumstances and appreciate them. It can be revealing to who we are at our core and humbling to allow growth to happen over time, even when it is sometimes painful or challenging to fully understand. Penetrating old perspectives and evolving a new one is almost always worth it.

Anonymous said…I love meeting new people at coffee shops, movie theaters, downtown, the grocery store, town lake... You name it! Sometimes I'll just go out and explore, see who I run into. Usually, I like to make eye contact w/ people and then smile if I feel like it or maybe compliment something I like about them, or I'll try to make them smile/laugh. I've made a lot of friends that way. Community is huge for me though. Meeting people thru commongrounds/interests/passions is important too, I think. All in all - making sure people know they are seen/heard/important is my aim. It's a really good feeling when it pays off and u find a meaningful connection w/ someone.

I take note and even get inspired - and tuck it away in my vision for my own exotic dream situation someday... Maybe the beaches of Australia, or Northern Cali. Anonymous said…Entertainment is the main source of inspiration. Its art, whether its through film, performance, dancing, singing... Films are one of the most powerful, I feel. The most recent one I've seen is "Gravity". I went in w/ no expectations - just to be open minded and experience it. The impact was significant. It's about the human spirit, love, life, survival, perseverance, persistence, courage .. you name it - and it all takes place in space. It was moving to say the least.

When I'm off duty or dealing with my investments, I'm extremely confident and brash, letting whatever emotions I have out. Moderation does seem to be the answer to many of our problems. As human beings, we tend to over-indulge on things we shouldn't, and not just food. It seems as if nature understands that we are idiots and makes sure there are penalties for our addictions and gluttony. But moderation and self-control go hand in hand, so I think a better statement would be that self-control is the answer... excellent post. "Is Moderation The Answer."

George, you ask a lot of really great questions. This blog always makes me stop and ponder things and look at the world a little bit differently. I feel like even if we don't have all the answers we get a little bit closer to the truth by looking inside ourselves and evaluating why we do things. So I just wanted to say thank you and keep questioning!

But like you said, it's much easier to say that and sit back complacently then to actually get up and live it out. Anonymous said…We're (women) the more nurturing species, and it's natural for us to seek stability and find someone to take care of? That's the answer I think you're looking for.. I on the other hand, and I'm sure many other women feel the same, am not looking for marriage. I'm sure one day but not anytime soon. I do enjoy experiencing different men the way I have though, learning their strengths and weaknesses, knowing how to trigger certain emotions. I dive deep and always resurface. Most of us live in a semi-somnambulistic state: we do our daily tasks and the days fly by. The two exceptions to this are childhood and those moments when we are in love. In both cases, our emotions are more engaged, more open and active. And we equate feeling emotional with feeling more alive.

REE19 said…Interesting subject, of course. I say If you have the money and the time is right, why not? My stance on drugs is open, always has been. You know some people want to know everything, some don't care to know much, and others are happy with what life has already given them. It's no secret that drugs "open your mind" that what's so alluring. So who am I to say that someone's decision is wrong ? Learning is what humans do, whether someone finds what they want in drugs, life experiences, heartbreak, death, food, sex, music. Oh, all that sounds great! I'm definitely open mindful. Now should we make these drugs legal? Sure. Less competition for me.

Anonymous said…I really enjoyed traveling to Europe this summer. To me, that was great. I met a lot of new people, was spontaneous and took many more risks than I normally do back home. I felt free! Great, I suppose, will be trying live that way at home and not just while traveling.

Anonymous said…My version of great is being fully self-expressed creatively through relationships, art, dance ... Whatever it may b that given day :) Also - enjoying blooming wherever I'm planted, meeting new people, and staying open to the possibilities of NOW. All in all - being a good friend, daughter, girlfriend, sister, granddaughter, aunt, etc.. Is what ultimately brings me the most fulfillment/joy.

I'm glad that you posted this :) I feel that cosmetic surgery is meant to make people feel better about their physical appearance, although it can be taken to major extremes which of course is unhealthy. Personally, I wouldn't want a mate who has had cosmetic surgery but to each their own. -Britt

George, you asked "is there a better way to be?"
my answer: not if you are happy.
in my opinion, "the best way to live" is the way that makes you happy. This does not have to fit into a conveniently labeled box, i.e. "city, country, homemaker, etc." if a person choses to define themselves as such, great, have a it, its your life not mine. My point (which i am not being incredibly concise in making) is that life is what we make of it. there is no "best" or "worst", because no one knows what someone else's reality is. that is the key: it is relative. Personally, if i am building a life through actions that leave me fulfilled and peaceful at the end of the day, than that is the "best" way I can live. That is the "best life," and I have the power to create it. IF I CHOSE TO DO SO.

Anonymous said…I think it means "BE here Now". Mindfulness, which, among other things, is an attentive awareness of the reality of things (especially of the present moment) is an antidote to delusion and is considered as such a 'power' the buddha would approve.

A lone male gives an ecstatic display, where it stands still and places its head on its chest before inhaling and giving a courtship call for 1–2 seconds; it then moves around the colony and repeats the call. A male and female then stand face to face, with one extending its head and neck up and the other mirroring it; they both hold this posture for several minutes. Once in pairs, couples waddle around the colony together, with the female usually following the male.
