OpenNMS 1.6.4 (stable) and OpenNMS 1.7.2 (unstable) Released

I am happy to announce the availability of OpenNMS 1.6.4, the next production release of OpenNMS, as well as OpenNMS 1.7.2, the next development release (which should become OpenNMS 1.8 in a couple of months).

As usual, the stable release of OpenNMS only includes small features and bug fixes. These include improvements to the thresholding system, a new BGP peer monitor and visual improvements to the charting system. A detailed list can be found here:

http://www.opennms.org/index.php/New_and_Noteworthy#New_in_OpenNMS_1.6.4

The new version of our development (unstable) release is also available. The 1.7 branch includes a large number of new features, including a replacement for capsd called provisiond, WMI support, a Layer 2 SNMP status poller, an integration with RANCID, and Asterisk notification support (send notifications through your Asterisk server).

Note that you should only use 1.7 in production with extreme caution as it is designed as a development release until it has been fully tested. Please help us test it by deploying it in a test environment.

We hope you enjoy OpenNMS as much as we've enjoyed making it.
OpenNMS: 1.6.2 (Stable) Released

A Java/XML-based Distributed Network & Systems Management platform.

OpenNMS 1.6.2 Released

I am happy to announce the next update in our production (stable) branch: 1.6.2. It includes the following features and bug fixes.

o Ticketing integration support was added for RT (Request Tracker) (Bug #2278)

o Jabber notifications now support configurations where the XMPP domain server hostname don't match, e.g. Google Talk (Bug #1387)

o KSC reports now auto-refresh every 5 minutes (Bug #2899)

o New data collections and traps were added for various IETF, Cisco, Juniper, AIX, and SNMP Informant MIBs. (Bugs #2933, #2934, #2947 and #2954)

o Jabber notifications would stop sending if the connection to the XMPP server failed; it now reconnects automatically. (Bug #1860)

o A couple of unhandled exceptions were fixed. (Bugs #1599 and #1748)

o The PL/pgsql version of IPLIKE did not work with expressions that used multiple comma-separated values. (Bug #2803)

o HTTP data collection only stored values for one URL, even if
multiple URLs were specified in the http-datacollection-config.xml. (Bug #2940)

o The mail transport monitor would not always honor the delete-all-mail attribute.

All the repositories have been updated so feel free to download it. Be sure to let us know how well it works and we hope you've found our work valuable. (0 comments)

OpenNMS 1.7.0 (Unstable) Released

Along with the release of 1.6.2 we are releasing 1.7.0, the first development release of what will become 1.8.0. This is an unstable release and is meant to be more of a technology preview than to be used in production. For those of you who were used to using 1.3 and 1.5 in production *this is not the same thing*. Not until 1.7 is more mature should it be considered for production use, although we welcome and hope people will install it on a development server and give us feedback.

The following is a partial list of changes in 1.7.0:

Architectural Changes

o OpenNMS was updated to use Spring 2.5.

o DAO Updates: Many more parts of the OpenNMS data access layer have been updated to be compatible with Hibernate and database abstraction.

o OSGi Preparation: Some daemon architectural changes have happened to support an eventual integration with OSGi. (post-1.8)

o Test Framework Updates: A number of handy annotation-based test framework changes have been made using JUnit.

New Features

o RESTful Interface: A number of interfaces to OpenNMS data have been made available through a RESTful interface, using the Jersey API.

This includes simple web API access to alarms, events, nodes, notifications, and outages, and it is expected that this will be expanded in future releases.

o Capsd Replacement: A complete replacement for Capsd, called "Provisiond" is introduced in this release. It allows you to define specific behaviors for detecting services and attributes of devices in manual, automated, and semi-automated ways, with simple APIs for writing your own custom scanning behavior and detectors.

This includes a highly-scalable, highly-parallelizable threading architecture which will be used for other parts of OpenNMS in future releases.

o RADIUS Authentication: A RADIUS authentication provider has been added.

o Mobile Browser Cleanups: Some updates have been made to the web UI to make them more mobile-friendly.

o Adobe AIR Client: An Adobe AIR based client was added.

o WMI Support: Support has been added for polling and datacollection from Windows Management Instrumentation.

Since you are probably curious, we are hoping to have 1.8.0 released in the first half of this year.

We're pretty excited about this release and hope it can serve as a great example of what a talented and dedicated community can accomplish using a purely open source development model. As always, please try it out and we hope you find it useful. (0 comments)

OpenNMS 1.6.0 (Stable) Released

OpenNMS, the world's first enterprise-grade network management platform developed as 100% free and open software, has released version 1.6.0. This is a stable, production release that incorporates nearly three years of development.

The last production version, 1.2.0, was aimed to compete squarely with Hewlett-Packard's OpenView Network Node Manager product. This release builds upon that work to expand the reach of OpenNMS to other parts of the OpenView family as well as to provide an open source alternative to products such as Tivoli's Netcool.

OpenNMS 1.6.0 sports a redesigned user interface, a number of scalability improvements and increased integration with other products. OpenNMS now runs on Windows, in addition to most flavors of Linux, Solaris and Mac OS X.

One of the major additions to the platform is the Alarms subsystem. OpenNMS can receive events from a number of sources, such as SNMP traps, syslog, TL/1, and custom scripts. A key can be configured for each event that will allow it to be turned into an alarm. Thus if a device is generating multiple, identical events, their number will be reduced into just a single alarm. This greatly reduces the amount of event "noise" that operators see.

In addition, automated actions can be performed on alarms. For example, events that signal problem resolution, or "up" alarms, can be matched with "down" alarms to automatically clear them. Event workflow can be built into the system by using these automations to manage the alarm list, thus freeing up the operators to focus on the most important issues.

While OpenNMS contains a robust automated discovery system, when managing tens of thousands of nodes it is often preferred to allow an external system to determine what OpenNMS is to monitor. Thus OpenNMS 1.6.0 contains a new "model importer" feature that allows node, interface and service information to be imported directly into the system using data in an XML format. One company uses this method to manage over 70,000 devices with a single instance of OpenNMS.

Data collection saw many improvements as well. With the proper hardware, OpenNMS is able to collect over one million data points every five minutes. This data can be from SNMP (versions 1, 2c and 3), JMX, HTTP, or NSClient. The collected data can be exported via the web user interface. Reports showing the highest and lowest values for a particular set of data points (Top N Reports) can also be created, and 1.6.0 contains a vastly improved thresholding system. Thresholds can be generated on individual data points, combinations of data points, as well as a "relative change" such as when a value shows a sudden increase or decrease.

OpenNMS was originally designed for network service monitoring, and that functionality has been increased as well. New monitors for such things as Windows services are now available, as well as more advanced synthetic transactions. The Page Sequence Monitor was created to monitor a complete web-based transaction, while the Mail Transport Monitor determines the full round-trip availability of a mail service.

Probably the biggest change was the development of distributed monitoring. Using a small Java webstart application installed on a remote system, OpenNMS is able to monitor service availability from the point of view of the remote system. Combined with the Page Sequence Monitor one can measure the user's experience when visiting a website from various remote locations.

As OpenNMS was designed as a platform, there are numerous ways for external applications, both open and proprietary, to integrate with it. There is a new Trouble Ticketing API that allows for two-way communication between OpenNMS and a number of external ticketing systems such as Jira, Concursive (CentricCRM) and OTRS.

These are just a few of the new features available in 1.6.0. As always, OpenNMS is 100% free and open software. Please check it out and let us know what you think. We hope you enjoy using it as much as we enjoy creating it.
