Songkran Festival

Thai New Year

Thailand's most celebrated festival is the Songkran Festival. It starts April 13 and lasts between 3 and 10 days, depending on where you are in Thailand. The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit meaning the beginning of a new Solar Year, but nowadays Thailand celebrates the New Year on 31 December.

The Thai people celebrate this festival with water. Everyone gets soaking wet and since it is the hottest season of the year, the custom is quite refreshing. Songkran is a Public Spring Cleaning Day, supported by the religious belief that anything old and useless must be thrown away or it will bring bad luck to the owner.

During the afternoon of the 13th, Buddha images are bathed as part of the ceremony. Young people pour scented water into the hands of elders and parents as a mark of respect while seeking the blessing of the older people. In ancient days, old people were actually given a bath and clothed in new apparel presented by the young folks as a token of respect for the New Year.

Until recently Thailand was almost entirely an agricultural society and this has been a perfect time to take break from the business of earning a living. The rice harvest is in, and replanting has to await the coming of the rains.

It is an old belief that the Nagas or mythical serpents brought on rain by spouting water from the seas. The more they spouted, the more rain there would be. So, one might believe that the Songkran customs of throwing water is actually a rain-making idea, but it seems that the Thais don't really bother about way they celebrate Songkran - they just do it for having a great time!

Loy Kratong Festival

One of the most popular and wonderful festivals in Thailand is this " Loy Krathong Festival ".
It's a Thai traditional event and taken place on the night of full moon in the middle of November (12th month of Thai lunar calendar) every year.
It's held in each area through the country, and this year, 2005, they have the festival on 16, November.

"Loy" means "to float" and "Krathong" is a lotus-shaped boat decorated with banana leaves, flowers, candles, incense sticks and so on.
On the full moon night, when the river is high over the country, people launch their Krathongs on rivers, canals or small ponds to thank to the Goddess of water (Khongkha or Ganga) and put away sins and bad luck.

On this night, people float little “krathongs”, lotus shaped vessels-traditionally made from banana leaves but nowadays often made from more modern materials such as Styrofoam or cardboard- down rivers and klongs, or canals. The “loy” in Loy Krathong means “float”.

At this time of year the rainy season has just finished and the rivers, streams and canals are all swelling.

On this evening, throughout the kingdom of Thailand, hundreds of thousands of beautifully-decorated krathong,or traditional banana leaf floats can be seen floating in canals, ponds, rivers and other waterways in the spell-binding ritual, also known as the “Festival of Lights”.

Placed inside the krathong are a candle, three incense sticks and a flower, and sometimes a few coins. People believe that by setting the krathong afloat, they are casting away any bad fortunes, grief and any tarnishing of one’s character. Good wishes and hopes for the future are sent along downstream with their wishes.

It is believed that if the candle stays alight until the krathong is out of sight, their wishes will come true. Young couples often float krathongs together with their dreams of staying together. Among the celebrations of Loy Krathong are fireworks displays as well as "The Noppamas Queen Contest".

Noppamas is a legendary figure from the Sukhothai period. Old documents refer to her as the chief royal consort of a Sukhothai King named "Lithai". Noppamas was said to have made the first decorated Krathong to float in the river on the occasion.

There are various fascinating accounts about the origins of Loi Krathong. It is not known as to when the tradition first began but authorities speculate that it is of Indian origin and based on the "Deepavalee" ritual which is also accompanied by floating lights in an act of worship of the Brahmin gods - Brahma, Siva and Vishnu, or an act of remission to the Indian Ganga or Ganges.

According to another school of thought, the ritual is said to be based on ancient Buddhist tales and is undertaken to pay respect to the sacred footprint of the Lord Buddha on the bank of the mythical Nammadhammahantee river. However, given the river-based culture that formed the foundation of the traditional Thai way of life, Loi Krathong evolved into a ritual in which offerings are made to Mae Khongkha – Mother of Waters, the Thai equivalent of the Hindu goddess of water, in an expression of gratitude for providing life-sustaining water throughout the year.

It is also believed that the offering are made in an act of appeasement to beg her forgiveness for Man's carelessness in polluting the pristine water that nourishes all life. Over time the tradition spread throughout the country.

Saturation - may confound the diamond folks, but colored gemstone lovers know that "saturation" refers to the amount of hue (or amount of coloration of the primary hue) in a gem. Satuaraion is normally stated in terms of weak, fair , medium, strong or vivid
Tone - is the amount of undesireable (gray and brown) coloration present in the diamond. Tone is often represented as very light, light, medium, dark or very dark.

Diamonds are sold by the carat. One carat = 0.20 grams, or 1/5 th of a gram. Wholesale prices are normally quoted per carat, not by the gem. It is a quick easy reference for comparison.

Certain diamond sizes usually command higher prices per carat ... break points, so to speak. A diamond of .5 or .51 carats will be worth more per carat than an equal quality stone of .49 carats. Other break points are 1 carat, 2 carats, etc ... and prices increase exponentially.

Muay Thai Equipment

In the history of Muay Thai, Muay Thai has always been a sport for the people as well as a military fighting skill. In all its golden ages, the people have trained and practiced the sport whether they were King or commoner. It was a part of the school curriculum right up to the 1920's when it was withdrawn because it was felt that the injury rate was too high. The people however, continued to study it in gyms and clubs just as they do today.

The people have always followed the sport and have been instrumental in moving it from the battlefield to the ring. They have been as much a part of making it a sport as have the Kings. One of the prime movers in transforming the sport was the Tiger King, who not only influenced fighting styles but also the equipment.

During the reign of the Tiger King, the hands and forearms began being bound with strips of horse hair. This was to serve a dual purpose - protect the fighter and inflict more damage on the opponent. Later, these were replaced by hemp ropes or starched strips of cotton. For particular challenge matches and with the fighters agreement, ground glass was mixed with glue and spread on the strips.

The changes that the sport has undergone have been changes to equipment used rather than radical change. For example, Thai fighters have always worn groin guards. A kick or knee to the groin was a perfectly legal move up until the 1930's. In the early days, the protection was made from tree bark or sea shells held in place with a piece of cloth tied between the legs and around the waist.

The groin guard later became a triangular shaped pillow, red or blue, tied around the waist with a through strap between the legs. The pillow went, after a boxer on a trip to Malaysia saw a groin box. He came back with the idea, which is close to the original idea of the sea shell and since then, Muay Thai fighters have used them.

The 1930's saw the most radical change in the sport. It was then that it was codified and today's rules and regulations were introduced. Rope bindings of the arms and hands were abandoned and gloves took their place.

mean Muaythai techniques of using fists, feet, knees, and elbows efficiently in the attack and defense. The skills in Muaythai are acquired by practice and use of fists, feet, knees, and elbows harmoniously. The techniques used in teaching Muaythai vary from teacher to teacher, depending on the style each teacher can adapt. A style invented by a teacher will be given a name according to the action. When time goes by, the styles have considerably increased. They are therefore grouped and rhymed for the students to memorize. In the past, Muaythai boxers did not put on gloves. They fought with bare hands or hands wrapped with cotton yarn. The fighters could use their hands to throw, break or twist the opponents. They made use of a wide range of fighting techniques rather than strength. There emerged a lot of fighting styles accordingly. Later, the boxers are required to put on gloves like the international-style fighters and numerous rules and regulations have been issued to protect the fighters from any dangers and to facilitate the scoring system. Certain fighting styles are banned in the competition because they are regarded as a foul whereas boxers are unable to use certain skillful styles due to the guards or protectors put on their bodies. These styles were finally forgotten.
Muaythai techniques are grouped differently according to the teachers. In many Muaythai manuals, the techniques are obviously classified according to the features. The attack and counterattack is called Khon Muay or Muaythai strategy. The use of fists, feet, knees, and elbows is called Cherng Muay, Mae Mai and Look Mai, Mai Khru and Mai Kred, or simply Muaythai maneuvers. Mai Khru is the main technique that all students must learn. When it is acquired, it can be split into numerous Mai Kred or techniques

Mae Mai
Mae Mai Muay Thai means the major fighting styles regarded as basic maneuvers in Muaythai fighting. The students have to learn and put them into practice before other trivial techniques or Look Mai will be taught. Mai Muay Thai is divided into 15 styles as follows

          1. Salab Fan Pla (Cross-switch movement)
          2. Paksa Waeg Rang (Bird peeping through the nest movement)
          3. Chawa Sad Hok (Java throws spear movement)
          4. Inao Thaenk Krit
          5. Yoh Khao Phra Sumain

#Salab Fan Pla (Defend in long range)

It is a major or basic maneuver used to defend and avoid the straight punch of the opponent that leads off by stepping aside to make him miss.
The attacker walks in and strikes the defensive's face with the left punch.
The defensive steps aside with the right foot and ducks to the right around 60 degrees. The weight is on the right foot. The right leg is slightly bent to avoid the punch. Turn the attacker's upper arm down with the right hand and turn the fist up with the left hand (like breaking the opponent's arm).

#Paksa Waeg Rang (Defend at close quarters)

This technique is used to get at close quarters so that the other techniques can be further used.
The attacker walks in and throws the left punch to the defensive's face.
Defensive steps the foot obliquely to the left and ducks by 60 degrees with the weight on the left foot. Both arms will be held up to guard the punch with both fists kept close to each other (like wai). The elbows must be slightly extended whereas the head and face are behind both-hand guard. The defensive has to keep the eyes on the attacker's right fist.

#Chawa Sad Hok (Throwing elbow at long range)

This technique is used to avoid the straight punch of the attacker and counter the attack with elbow strike.
The attacker walks in and pushes out the left punch to the defensive's face.
The defensive steps aside to the right and ducks by 30 degrees with the weight on the right foot. The left arm must be bent and the elbow cast to the rib of the attacker

#Inao Thaenk Krit (Elbow strike at close quarters)

This technique is usually used to defend the straight punch and strike the elbow at close quarters.
The attacker throws the right punch to the defensive's face.
The defensive deflects the punch with his left hand. He then steps the right foot forward and ducks to the left by 60 degrees with the weight on the right foot. Bend the right elbow in the manner that it is parallel to the ground and strike the elbow to the rib of the attacker.

#Yoh Khao Phra Sumain (Strike the tip of jaw while inclining by 45 degrees)

This technique is used to defend the straight punch by ducking so that the blow goes over the head and throw an uppercut.
The attacker walks in with the left foot and throws the left punch to the defensive's face.
The defensive steps forward with the right foot and ducks by 45 degrees with the weight on the bent right foot. Stretch the right foot and throw an uppercut to the tip of the attacker's jaw. The left arm is held on guard to the chin.

#Ta Taen Kham Fak (Throw an uppercut to the tip of jaw while ducking by 60 degrees) This technique is basically used to deflect the punch upward. The attacker throws the left punch to the defensive's face. The defensive steps forward to the right with the left foot and bends the right arm to deflect the punch upward. Slightly bend the left knee and throw the left uppercut to the tip of the attacker's jaw.

#Maun Yan Lak (Defend the punch with thrust kick)

This technique is basically used to defend the punch with thrust kick thrown to the chest or abdomen.
The attacker walks in and throws the left punch.
The defensive steps to the right and ducks by 45 degrees to avoid the punch. Stand on the right foot while holding both hands on guard and delivering thrust kick to the chest or abdomen of the attacker.

#Pak Look Thoy (Defend the kick with elbow)

This technique is basically used to defend the kick with elbow.
The attacker is in the kicking range and repeatedly throws the right kicks to the defensive's rib. Both arms are held up to guard the face.
The defensive slips to the left and steps the left foot backward. Bend the right arm so that the right elbow guards the kicks of the attacker whereas the left arm is held up to guard the face.

#Jorake Phad Hang or spin kick (defend the punch with spin kick)

This technique is intended to throw the heel kick to the back. When the opponent is off balance, the spin kick will be thrown.
The attacker walks in with the left foot and throws the left punch.
The defensive steps to the right with the right foot to avoid the punch. Hold the arms up to guard the face while rotating the whole body on the left foot and throwing the right heel to the abdomen or neck of the attacker.

#Hak Nguang Aiyara (Elbow strike to the ham string)

This technique is used to counter the kick by striking an elbow on the hamstring to reduce the strength.
The attacker repeatedly throws the right kicks to the rib of the defensive while holding both hands to guard the face.
The defensive takes the right step forward to get the distance while turning to the left and bending the right knee on the stretched foot. Hold the right foot of the attacker up with the left hand and throw the right elbow to the attacker's hamstring. Pull the right foot of the attacker higher to make him off-balance and prevent the attacker from throwing the elbow on the head.

# Naka Bid Hang ((twist the leg and throw the knee strike to the calf or knee joint)

This technique is used to defend against the kick by holding the foot of the opponent and twisting it while throwing the knee strike to the leg.
The attacker repeatedly throws the right kicks to the rib of the defensive and holds both hands in the guard.
The defensive slips to the left and holds the foot of the attacker with both hands. Twist the tip of foot while throwing the right knee to the calf or knee joint of the attacker.

#Wiroon Hok Klab (Defend against the kick with thrust kick)

This technique is used to defend against the kick by throwing the heel to hit the hamstring.
The attacker throws the left kick to the rib of the defensive.
The defensive delivers a thrust kick to the left hamstring of the attacker and holds up both hand guard. The thrust kick must be performed rapidly and forcefully to make the attacker off-balance.

#Dab Chawala (Deflect the punch)

This technique is used to deflect the straight punch thrown to the face of the defensive.
The attacker walks in with the left foot and throws the left punch to the face of the defensive.
The defensive takes a right step forward and turns to the right while deflecting the punch and pressing it down. At the same time, the defensive throws the left punch to the face of the attacker and steps aside on the right.

#Khun Yak Jab Ling (Defend against punch, kick and elbow)
It is one of the most important techniques used to defend against the punch, kick and elbow of the opponent during clinching. The training practice is divided into 3 stages.

Stage 1

The attacker walks in with the left foot and throws the left punch to the face of the defensive.
The defensive takes a left step toward the attacker and deflect the attacker's left arm with his right hand.

Stage 2

The attacker repeated throws the right kicks to the rib of the defensive.
The defensive takes a left step backward and ducks while throwing the right elbow to hit the right thigh of the attacker.

Stage 3

The attacker bends the right arm and ducks to strike the elbow to the head of the defensive.
The defensive promptly bends the arm to counter the elbow and takes a right step backward.

The attacker walks in with the left foot and throws the left punch while holding the right arm to guard the chin.
The defensive rapidly takes a left step toward the attacker and deflect the attacker's left arm with his right arm. Hold the neck of the attacker down with both hands and throw a jumping knee strike to the face of the attacker.

การสังเกตว่าพลอยเม็ดไหนเป็นพลอยแท้หรือพลอยเทียมนั้น ถ้าไม่ใช่คนที่อยู่ในวงการเพชรพลอย คงยากที่จะสามารถแยกออกค่ะ เนื่องจากการที่จะแยกได้นั้นต้องใช้ประสบการณ์พอสมควร หรือแม้แต่คนในวงการก็อาจพลาดได้เช่นกัน พลอยแต่ละเม็ดสามารถแยกได้ง่าย บางเม็ดก็แยกได้ยาก บางเม็ดต้องใช้เครื่องมือในห้องปฏิบัติการอัญมณีช่วยในการแยก หรือบางเม็ดอาจต้องใช้ถึงเครื่องมือทางวิทยาศาสตร์ชั้นสูงเลยทีเดียว

พลอยที่ไม่ใช่พลอยธรรมชาติหรือเป็นพลอยที่คนทำขึ้นมานั้น มีทั้งแบบที่เอาแก้วหรือพลาสติก มาเจียระไนให้ดูเหมือนพลอย หรืออาจเป็นพวกเพชรรัสเซีย (CZ) ที่มีหลากสี หรือเป็นพลอยสังเคราะห์ (Synthetic) ที่มีคุณสมบัติทางฟิสิกส์ เคมี เหมือนพลอยแท้ ที่เขาเรียกกันว่า “พลอยอัด” ค่ะ ...สรุปได้ว่าพลอยปลอมก็มีมากมายหลายชนิด วิธีสังเกตพลอยปลอมแต่ละชนิดก็แตกต่างกันไปค่ะ ถ้าจะให้อธิบายกันทั้งหมดคงไม่จบง่ายๆแน่ๆ อีกทั้งการแยกพลอยบางชนิดยังต้องอาศัยเครื่องมือหลายตัวในการตรวจสอบด้วย เอาเป็นว่าเราจะบอกวิธีการสังเกตหลักๆระหว่างพลอยจริงกับพลอยปลอมคร่าวๆแล้วกันค่ะ

วิธีการแยกนั้น ให้ดูที่ “ตำหนิภายใน” (Inclusion) ของพลอย ตำหนิที่เป็นตำหนิธรรมชาติในเนื้อพลอย เช่น ตำหนิเส้นเข็ม ผลึกแร่ต่างๆ ตำหนิรูปลายนิ้วมือ และที่สำคัญอีกตัวหนึ่งก็คือ แถบสี ซึ่งต้องเป็นแถบสีตรงหรือแถบสีหักมุมค่ะ

ตำหนิรูปรอยนิ้วมือ (Fingerprint) หรือที่บางคนก็เรียกว่าเป็นลายหิน

ส่วนตำหนิในพลอยปลอมนั้น ถ้าเป็นพลอยสังเคราะห์หรือที่เรียกกันว่าพลอยอัด ลักษณะของแถบสีจะเป็นเส้นโค้ง และมีฟองอากาศอยู่ในเนื้อพลอย

กลุ่มฟองอากาศ (Gas bubbles)

การสังเกตสำหนิเหล่านี้ อาจจะเป็นเรื่องยากสำหรับคนที่ไม่คุ้นเคยและไม่มีประสบการณ์ในการดูพลอยมาก่อน แต่ถ้าเราหัดเรียนรู้ไว้ เวลาไปซื้อพลอยจะได้ไม่ถูกหลอกง่ายๆค่ะ

ส่วนพลอยปลอมชนิดอื่น ก็มีวิธีสังเกตอื่นๆอีก เช่น เพชรรัสเซียที่มีสีต่างๆ (Synthetic Cubic Zirconia) จะมีน้ำหนักมากกว่าพลอยปกติในขนาดที่เท่ากัน เนื่องจากเพชรรัสเซียมีค่าความถ่วงจำเพาะสูง นอกจากนี้เรายังสามารถสังเกตประกายไฟสีรุ้งของเพชรรัสเซียซึ่งจะวูบวาบมากกว่าพลอยปกติทั่วไป

ลักษณะของพลอยปลอมประเภทแก้วหรือพลาสติก อันนี้คงสังเกตได้ไม่ยากนัก เพราะเนื้อมันจะดูเบาโล่ง ดูออกกลวงๆหน่อย สีอาจจะฉูดฉาด ถ้าส่องดูเนื้อข้างในอาจจะเห็นฟองอากาศ และเนื้อแก้วที่มีลักษณะไหลๆเหมือนถูกหลอมมา ถ้าเป็นพลาสติกน้ำหนักจะเบาผิดปกติด้วยค่ะ

จากที่กล่าวมา เป็นพลอยปลอมที่สามารถพบได้ทั่วไปในท้องตลาดค่ะ ส่วนพลอยปลอมชนิดอื่นๆก็ยังมีอีกมาก ซึ่งอาจพบได้บ้างปะปนกันไป เวลาไปซื้อพลอย ถ้าพบว่าราคาถูกผิดปกติก็อย่าเพิ่งรีบซื้อ (หรือไม่ว่าราคาเท่าไรก็อย่าเพิ่งรีบซื้อ) ทางที่ดีควรตรวจสอบให้มั่นใจเสียก่อนซื้อ

สามารถเดินทางได้ 3 เส้นทาง ได้แก่
1. เส้นทางนครสวรรค์-ลำปาง-พะเยา-เชียงราย จากรังสิตมาตามถนนพหลโยธิน (ทางหลวงหมายเลข 1) แล้วแยกซ้ายเข้าทางหลวงหมายเลข 32 ที่อำเภอวังน้อย จากนั้นผ่านจังหวัดอยุธยา สิงห์บุรี ชัยนาท นครสวรรค์ กำแพงเพชร ตาก เข้าสู่
จังหวัดลำปาง แล้วตรงไปจังหวัดพะเยา จนเข้าสู่เชียงราย รวมระยะทาง 830 กิโลเมตร
2. เส้นทางนครสวรรค์-พิษณุโลก-แพร่-เชียงราย ใช้เส้นทางเดียวกับเส้นทางที่ 1 เมื่อไปถึงจังหวัดนครสวรรค์ ให้แยกขวามือไปตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 117 (นครสวรรค์-พิษณุโลก) จากนั้นใช้เส้นทางหลวงหมายเลข 11 (พิษณุโลก-เด่นชัย) จากจังหวัดพิษณุโลก ผ่านจังหวัดอุตรดิตถ์ จนถึงอำเภอเด่นชัย ให้เลี้ยวไปทางจังหวัดแพร่ ตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 101 (แพร่-น่าน) จนถึงอำเภอร้องกวาง เลี้ยวซ้ายไปตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 103 ไปบรรจบกับถนนพหลโยธินที่อำเภองาว เข้าสู่จังหวัดพะเยา แล้วตรงต่อไปจนถึงเชียงราย ระยะทางประมาณ 804 กิโลเมตร
3. เส้นทางนครสวรรค์-ลำปาง-เชียงใหม่-เชียงราย ใช้เส้นทางเดียวกับเส้นทางที่ 1 จนไปถึงจังหวัดลำปาง จึงเปลี่ยนไปใช้ทางหลวงหมายเลข 11 (ลำปาง-เชียงใหม่) ผ่านไปจังหวัดลำพูน แล้วเข้าสู่จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ แล้วใช้ทางหลวงหมายเลข 118 (เชียงใหม่-เชียงราย) ผ่านดอยสะเก็ต แม่ขะจาน เวียงป่าเป้าเข้าสู่เชียงราย รวมระยะทาง 900 กิโลเมตร มีทางหลวงหมายเลข 11 ผ่านลำพูนมาลำปาง บรรจบกับทางหลวงหมายเลข 1 เพื่อเดินทางกลับกรุงเทพฯ ได้

แม่ฮ่องสอน

แม่ฮ่องสอน เป็นจังหวัดชายแดนจังหวัดหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับสหภาพพม่า ตั้งอยู่ทางด้านตะวันตกสุดของภาคเหนือ โดยอยู่ห่างจากกรุงเทพฯประมาณ 924 กิโลเมตร มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 12,681.259 ตารางกิโลเมตร ปัจจุบันแบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น 7 อำเภอ คือ อำเภอเมือง แม่สะเรียง ขุนยวม ปาย แม่ลาน้อย สบเมย และปางมะผ้า
แม่ฮ่องสอนได้ชื่อว่า เมืองสามหมอก เนื่องจากเป็นเมืองในหุบเขา ล้อมรอบด้วยภูเขาสลับซับซ้อนทอดขนานไปกับทิวเขาถนนธงชัย และทิวเขาแดนลาว ดังนั้น จึงถูกปกคลุมด้วยหมอกตลอดทั้งปี มีทิวทัศน์สวยงามตามธรรมชาติของเทือกเขาสลับซับซ้อนและป่าไม้นานาพันธุ์จนมีคำกล่าวว่าเปรียบเสมือนกับเป็นสวิตเซอร์แลนด์ของเมืองไทย
ประวัติและความเป็นมาจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2374 พระเจ้ามโหตรประเทศ ผู้ครองนครเชียงใหม่ ให้ เจ้าแก้วเมืองมา เป็นแม่กอง นำไพร่พลช้างต่อและหมอควาญ ออกไปจับช้างป่ามาใช้งาน เจ้าแก้วเมืองมา ยกไพร่พลช้างช้างป่ามาใช้งาน เจ้าแก้วเมืองมา ยกไพร่พลข้ามภูเขา มาทางตะวันตกของเชียงใหม่ ซึ่งมีช้างป่าชุกชุม โดยมอบหน้าที่ให้ พะกาหม่อง เป็นผู้ควบคุมดูแล เมื่อคล้องช้างได้เป็นจำนวนเพียงพอแล้ว จึงพากันเดินทางต่อไปถึงชุมชนบ้านป่าแห่งหนึ่ง มีทำเลดีมีร่องธารน้ำและที่ราบ เหมาะแก่การฝึกช้างป่า จึงหยุดไพร่พลตั้งบ้านเรือนขึ้นที่นี่ และตั้งชื่อหมู่บ้านว่า “แม่ร่องสอน” หมายถึงที่มีร่องน้ำฝึกช้าง ต่อมา ได้เพี้ยนเป็น “แม่ฮ่องสอน”
ครั้นถึงปี พ.ศ. 2399 มีชาวไทยใหญ่ อพยพมาหลบภัยสงครามอยู่ที่แม่ร่องสอนเป็นจำนนมาก โดยมี เจ้าฟ้าโกหล่าน และชานกะเล เป็นหัวหน้า เมื่อมาอยู่ที่นี่ ชานกำเล ได้ช่วยหน่วยงานต่างๆ จนเป็นที่โปรดปรานของพะกาหม่องถึงกับยกลูกสาวชื่อนางไส ให้เป็นภรรยา ต่อมาชานกะเล อพยพครอบครัวลงใต้มาอยู่ที่เมืองกุ๋นลม หรือขุนยวมในปัจจุบัน ได้เป็นเข้าเมืองกุ๋นลมคนแรก ต่อมานางไสถึงแก่กรรม เจ้าฟ้าโกหล่าน ยกหลานสาวชื่อเจ้านางเมี๊ยะให้เป็นภรรยา ชานกะเลปกครองเมืองกุ๋นลม เจริญมั่งคั่งส่งส่วยตอไม้ให้ได้มากมาย จนถึง พ.ศ. 2417 เจ้าอินทวิชยานนท์ จึงแต่งตั้งชานกะเลเป็น พญาสิงหนาถราชา แล้วสถาปนาเป็นเจ้าเมืองแม่ฮ่องสอนคนแรก
จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน จึงถือเอาต้นกำเนิดเมือง คือ ร่องน้ำสอนช้าง และช้างตัวเดียวเล่นน้ำ เป็นสัญลักษณ์ประจำจังหวัด
จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนเป็นที่รวมของชนเผ่าไทยและชาวไทยภูเขาหลายเผ่า มาแต่โบราณ ผู้คนเหล่านี้ยังคงดำเนินชีวิตเรียบง่าย รักษาขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณีดังเดิมไว้ เฉกเช่นเมื่อหลายร้อยปีก่อน ประกอบด้วย ไทยใหญ่ ม้ง มูเซอ ลัวะ ลีซอ จีนฮ่อ และกะเหรี่ยง

รถยนต์
แม่ฮ่องสอนในอดีตเป็นเมืองที่เร้นลับและทุรกันดารในสายตาของนักท่องเที่ยวและประชาชนทั่วไป เนื่องจากเดิมนั้นการเดินทางเข้าสู่จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนมีถนนเพียงสายเดียว คือ ทางหลวงหมายเลข 108 ซึ่งตัดจากจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ผ่านอำเภอหางดง สันป่าตอง จอมทอง ฮอด แม่สะเรียง แม่ลาน้อย และขุนยวม มาถึงอำเภอเมืองแม่ฮ่องสอน รวมระยะทางประมาณ 349 กิโลเมตร เส้นทางสายนี้เป็นทางตัดขึ้นเขาสูง มีความสวยงามและคดเคี้ยวนับได้มากถึง 1,864 โค้ง ปัจจุบันมีถนนจากจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ถึงแม่ฮ่องสอนเพิ่มขึ้นอีกสายหนึ่ง คือทางหลวงหมายเลข 1095 หรือที่เรียกโดยทั่วไปว่าเส้นทางสายแม่มาลัย-ปาย ตัดจากอำเภอแม่แตง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ถึงอำเภอปายจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอนเหลือระยะทางเพียง 245 กิโลเมตร นอกจากนี้ เส้นทางนี้ยังเป็นเส้นทางผ่านไปยังสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวอื่นๆ ด้วย อาทิ ห้วยน้ำดัง และถ้ำต่างๆ ปัจจุบันเป็นถนนลาดยางอย่างดีตลอดสาย และหากนักท่องเที่ยวสนใจเดินทางจากจังหวัดตากไปยังจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน โดยไม่แวะเข้าจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ก็สามารถเดินทางได้ตามทางหลวงหมายเลข 108 ผ่านอำเภอแม่สอด-แม่ระมาด-ท่าสองยาง ถึงอำเภอแม่สะเรียง มีระยะทางประมาณ 300 กิโลเมตร เป็นทางลาดยาง

ดอยอินทนนท์

ข้อมูลทั่วไป
ป่าเมฆสูงสุดแดนสยาม
แต่เดิมดอยอินทนนท์มีชื่อว่า “ดอยหลวง” หรือ “ดอยอ่างกา” คำว่า ดอยหลวง หมายถึง ภูเขาที่มีขนาดใหญ่ ส่วนที่เรียกว่าดอยอ่างกานั้น มีเรื่องเล่าว่า ห่างจากดอยอินทนนท์ไปทางทิศตะวันตก 300 เมตร มีหนองน้ำอยู่แห่งหนึ่งลักษณะเหมือนอ่างน้ำ แต่ก่อนนี้มีฝูงกาลงไปเล่นน้ำกันมากมาย จึงเรียกว่า อ่างกา ต่อมาจึงรวมเรียกว่า “ดอยอ่างกา” เมื่อครั้งที่พื้นที่ป่าไม้ทางภาคเหนือ ยังอยู่ในความควบคุมของเจ้าผู้ครอบครองนครต่างๆ นั้นในสมัยพระเจ้าอินทรวิชยานนท์เป็นเจ้าผู้ครองนครเชียงใหม่ พระองค์เป็นผู้ที่เห็นความสำคัญของป่าไม้เป็นอันมาก โดยเฉพาะ “ดอยหลวง” พระองค์มีความหวงแหนเป็นพิเศษ ขณะที่ยังมีพระชนม์อยู่ได้สั่งไว้ว่า หากสิ้นพระชนม์ไปแล้วก็ขอให้แบ่งเอาอัฐิส่วนหนึ่งไปบรรจุไว้บนยอดดอยหลวงด้วย ต่อมาคำว่าดอยหลวงก็ถูกเปลี่ยนเป็น “ดอยอินทนนท์” ตามพระนามของเจ้าผู้ครองนครนั้น และเมื่อขึ้นไปบนยอดเขาสูงนี้ จะเห็นสถูปบรรจุพระอัฐิของพระเจ้า อินทรวิชยานนท์ประดิษฐานอยู่

อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ มีพื้นที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 482 ตารางกิโลเมตร ครอบคลุมพื้นที่อำเภอแม่แจ่ม อำเภอจอมทอง และอำเภอสันป่าตอง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ สภาพภูมิประเทศเป็นเทือกเขาสลับซับซ้อนมีความสูงตั้งแต่ 400-2,565 เมตรจากระดับน้ำทะเล สภาพป่ามีหลายประเภททั้ง ป่าเต็งรัง ป่าเบญจพรรณ ป่าดิบแล้ง และป่าดิบเขา โดยเฉพาะป่าดิบเขาบนยอดดอยสูงสุด นับเป็นธรรมชาติที่โดดเด่นที่สุดนอกจากนี้บนยอดดอยยังพบพืชจากเขตอบอุ่น เช่น กุหลาบพันปี บัวทอง ต่างไก่ป่า ฯลฯ และตามหน้าผาพบป่ากึ่งอันไพน์ ซึ่งเป็นสังคมพืชที่หาดูได้ยากในเมืองไทย ดอยอินทนนท์เป็นศูนย์รวมของนกป่าเกือบ 400 ชนิด โดยเฉพาะนกหายากหลายชนิดที่อาศัยในที่สูง เช่น นกปีกแพร นกกระทาดง นกศิวะ ฯลฯ ในจำนวนนี้มีมากกว่า 100 ชนิด ที่เป็นนกอพยพย้ายถิ่นเข้ามาอาศัยบนดอยอินทนนท์ในช่วงฤดูหนาว หลายชนิดพบได้ยากในพื้นที่อื่น เช่น นกเดินดง นกจับแมลง นกจาบปีกอ่อน นกเขน ฯลฯ

อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ เดิมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของป่าสงวนแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์และป่าเตรียมการสงวนป่าจอมทอง อำเภอจอมทอง ป่าแม่แจ่ม และป่าแม่ขาน-แม่วาง อำเภอสันป่าตอง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ภายใต้การสงวนและคุ้มครองตามพระราชบัญญัติคุ้มครองและสงวนป่า พ.ศ. 2497 และตามมติคณะรัฐมนตรีเมื่อวันที่ 7 ตุลาคม 2502 โดยออกเป็นกฎกระทรวงฉบับที่ 103 (พ.ศ. 2502) ป่าสงวนแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์นี้ต่อมาได้ถูกกำหนดให้เป็น 1 ใน 14 ป่า ที่ทางรัฐบาลให้ดำเนินการสำรวจและจัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติแห่งแรก ตามนโยบายของรัฐบาลในด้านการอนุรักษ์ การป้องกันและดูแลรักษาทรัพยากรป่าไม้ และเพื่อการนำเอาสภาพป่าและสภาพภูมิประเทศต่างๆ ของพื้นที่ป่าที่เหลืออยู่มาใช้เพื่อการพักผ่อนหย่อนใจ และเพื่อการศึกษาค้นคว้าวิจัยทางด้านธรรมชาติวิทยาและชีววิทยา

กองบำรุง กรมป่าไม้ ได้มีคำสั่งที่ 119/2508 ลงวันที่ 11 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2508 (ขณะนั้นเป็นหมวดอุทยานแห่งชาติ สังกัดกองบำรุง) ให้ นายนิพนธ์ บุญทารมณ์ นักวิชาการป่าไม้ตรีไปทำการสำรวจหาข้อมูลเบื้องต้น และเมื่อวันที่ 14 เมษายน 2515 นายปรีดา กรรณสูต ปลัดกระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ ได้มีบัญชาให้ นายอุดม ธนัญชยานนท์ นักวิชาการป่าไม้โท ทำการสำรวจทางเฮลิคอปเตอร์เพื่อจัดตั้งพื้นที่ดังกล่าวเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติตามมติคณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติ ครั้งที่ 1/2515 ปรากฏว่า ป่าดอยอินทนนท์ มีสภาพเป็นป่าสมบูรณ์ เป็นป่าต้นน้ำลำธาร มีสภาพทิวทัศน์และเอกลักษณ์ทางธรรมชาติที่สวยงาม และเป็นที่อาศัยของสัตว์ป่านานาชนิด เหมาะสมจัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ประกอบกับศูนย์อำนวยการร่วมฝ่ายรักษาความมั่นคงแห่งชาติได้มีหนังสือที่ กห 0312/4757 ลงวันที่ 12 เมษายน 2515 เสนอจอมพลถนอม กิตติขจร หัวหน้าคณะปฏิวัติ ให้กำหนดป่าดอยอินทนนท์เป็นเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติ และสภาบริหารคณะปฏิวัติได้มีมติเมื่อวันที่ 27 เมษายน2515 อนุมัติหลักการให้ดำเนินการ กรมป่าไม้จึงดำเนินการจัดตั้งบริเวณที่ดินป่าดอยอินทนนท์ ในท้องที่ตำบลบ้านหลวง ตำบลสบเตี้ยะ ตำบลสองแคว ตำบลยางคราม อำเภอจอมทอง ตำบลแม่วิน อำเภอสันป่าตอง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เนื้อที่ 168,750 ไร่ หรือ 270 ตารางกิโลเมตร เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ โดยได้มีประกาศคณะปฏิวัติ ฉบับที่ 223 ลงวันที่ 2 ตุลาคม 2515 ลงในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 89 ตอนที่ 148 ลงวันที่ 2 ตุลาคม 2515 เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 6 ของประเทศ

เมื่อวันที่ 16 มกราคม 2517 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าพระบรมราชินีนาถ ได้เสด็จที่บริเวณดอยขุนกลาง อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ ได้ทรงมีพระราชกระแสรับสั่ง ให้พิจารณาดำเนินการขยายอาณาเขตของอุทยานแห่งชาติออกไปคลุมถึงบริเวณพื้นที่ที่เป็นแหล่งกำเนิดต้นน้ำต้นน้ำลำธารเพิ่มขึ้นอีก กรมป่าไม้ได้ทำการตรวจสอบและสำรวจเพิ่มเติม ปรากฎว่า ตามที่กำหนดแนวเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติระบุท้องที่ตำบลแม่ศึก ซึ่งมิได้อยู่ในแนวเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติและมิได้ระบุท้องที่ตำบลช่างเคิ่งและตำบลท่าผา ซึ่งอยู่ในแนวเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติ ดังกล่าว ประกอบกับทางราชการกองทัพอากาศประสงค์ที่จะกันพื้นที่บางส่วนเพื่อก่อสร้างสถานีเรดาร์ เพื่อใช้ในราชการกองทัพอากาศ เนื้อที่ 33 ไร่ 2 งาน 37 ตารางวา และคณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติเห็นชอบให้ดำเนินการได้ เมื่อวันที่ 27 กุมภาพันธ์ 2517 อีกทั้งกระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ประสงค์ที่จะปรับปรุงแนวขยายแนวเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติออกไป โดยกำหนดป่าสงวนแห่งชาติอินทนนท์ ป่าสงวนแห่งชาติจอมทอง และป่าสงวนแห่งชาติแม่แจ่ม จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ซึ่งที่ประชุมคณะกรรมการแห่งชาติ ครั้งที่ 1/2518 เมื่อวันที่ 4 เมษายน 2518 ได้มีมติเห็นชอบ

กองอุทยานแห่งชาติ กรมป่าไม้ จึงดำเนินการเพิกถอนป่าสงวนแห่งชาติทั้ง 3 ป่า จัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ โดยมีพระราชกฤษฎีกำหนดบริเวณป่าดอยอินทนนท์ ในท้องที่ตำบลแม่นาจร ตำบลช่างเคิ่ง ตำบลท่าผา อำเภอแม่แจ่ม ตำบลแม่วิน ตำบลทุ่งปี้ อำเภอสันป่าตอง และตำบลสองแคว ตำบลยางคราม ตำบลบ้านหลวง ตำบลสบเตี้ยะ อำเภอจอมทอง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ซึ่งลงประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 95 ตอนที่ 62 ลงวันที่ 13 มิถุนายน 2521 รวมเนื้อที่ 301,500 ไร่ หรือ 482.40 ตารางกิโลเมตร โดยให้ยกเลิกประกาศคณะปฏิวัติ ฉบับที่ 223 ลงวันที่ 2 ตุลาคม 2515

ปัจจุบันอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ มีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมท้องที่อำเภอจอมทอง อำเภอแม่แจ่ม อำเภอแม่วาง และกิ่งอำเภอดอยหล่อ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่

ลักษณะภูมิประเทศ
สภาพภูมิประเทศประกอบด้วยภูเขาสูงสลับซับซ้อน เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแนวเขตเทือกเขาถนนธงชัยที่ทอดตัวตามแนวเหนือ-ใต้ ทอดตัวมาจากเทือกเขาหิมาลัยในประเทศเนปาล มีระดับความสูงของพื้นที่อยู่ระหว่าง 400-2,565 เมตรจากระดับน้ำทะเลปานกลาง โดยจุดสูงสุดอยู่ที่ยอดดอยอินทนนท์ ซึ่งเป็นจุดที่สูงสุดในประเทศไทย ยอดเขาที่มีระดับสูงรองลงมา คือ ยอดดอยหัวหมดหลวง สูง 2,330 เมตร ยอดดอยหัวหมดน้อย สูง 1,900 เมตร ยอดดอยหัวเสือ สูง1,881 เมตรจากระดับน้ำทะเล

ลักษณะโครงสร้างทางธรณีของอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์โดยทั่วไป ประกอบด้วยหินที่มีอายุตั้งแต่ยุคแคมเบรียนขึ้นไป และหินส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นหินไนส์และหินแกรนิต ส่วนหินชนิดอื่นๆ ที่พบจะเป็นหินยุคออร์โดวิเชียนซึ่งได้แก่หินปูน จนถึงยุคเทอร์เซียรี่ได้แก่หินกรวดมน

อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์เป็นพื้นที่ต้นน้ำลำธารที่สำคัญของแม่น้ำปิง ให้กำเนิดแม่น้ำลำธารหลายสาย ที่สำคัญได้แก่ ลำน้ำแม่วาง ลำน้ำแม่กลาง ลำน้ำแม่ยะ ลำน้ำแม่หอย ลำน้ำแม่แจ่ม และลำน้ำแม่เตี๊ยะ ซึ่งลำน้ำเหล่านี้จะไหลผ่านและหล่อเลี้ยงชุมชนต่างๆ ในเขตอำเภอจอมทอง อำเภอแม่แจ่ม อำเภอฮอด อำเภอแม่วาง และอำเภอสันป่าตอง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ แล้วไหลลงสู่แม่น้ำปิง

ลักษณะภูมิอากาศ
สภาพภูมิอากาศโดยทั่วไปของพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ได้รับอิทธิพลจากลมมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ที่พัดพาเอาความชุ่มชื้นและเมฆฝนเข้ามาทำให้ฝนตก และลมมรสุมตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือที่พัดมาจากประเทศจีนจะนำเอาความหนาวเย็นและความแห้งแล้งเข้ามา ทำให้เกิดฤดูกาลต่างๆ โดยจะมีฤดูร้อนในช่วงระหว่างเดือนมีนาคม-พฤษภาคม ฤดูฝนในช่วงระหว่างเดือนมิถุนายน-พฤศจิกายน และฤดูหนาวในช่วงระหว่างเดือนธันวาคม-กุมภาพันธ์ สลับกันไป แต่เนื่องจากพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์มีความหลากหลายทางด้านระดับความสูง ทำให้ลักษณะอากาศในแต่ละพื้นที่มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมาก โดยจะมีลักษณะของสภาพอากาศแบบเขตร้อนในตอนล่างของพื้นที่ที่ระดับความสูงจากน้ำทะเลต่ำกว่า 1,000 เมตรลงมา มีสภาพอากาศแบบกึ่งเขตร้อนในบริเวณตอนกลางของพื้นที่ที่มีระดับความสูงจากน้ำทะเลระหว่าง 1,000-2,000 เมตร และมีสภาพอากาศแบบเขตอบอุ่นในพื้นที่ที่มีระดับความสูงจากน้ำทะเลกว่า 2,000 เมตรขึ้นไป

ในพื้นที่สูงตอนบนของอุทยานแห่งชาติ โดยทั่วไปแล้วจะมีสภาพที่ชุ่มชื้นและหนาวเย็นตลอดปี โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งบริเวณยอดดอยอินทนนท์ซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นสันเขาและยอดเขา จะมีกระแสลมที่พัดแรงและมีสภาพอากาศที่หนาวเย็นมาก และในช่วงวันที่หนาวจัดในช่วงเดือนธันวาคม-มกราคม อุณหภูมิจะลดต่ำลงถึง 0-4 องศาเซลเซียส และจะมีน้ำค้างแข็งเกิดขึ้น ที่ระดับกลางของอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ สภาพอากาศโดยทั่วไปจะมีลักษณะค่อนข้างเย็นและชื้น อุณหภูมิเฉลี่ยตลอดปีประมาณ 20 องศาเซลเซียส ในช่วงฤดูหนาวในเดือนธันวาคม-มกราคม อุณหภูมิเฉลี่ยจะอยู่ระหว่าง 15-17 องศาเซลเซียส ปริมาณน้ำฝนเฉลี่ย 2,000-2,100 มิลลิเมตร/ต่อปี สำหรับในพื้นที่ที่มีระดับความสูงตั้งแต่ 1,800 เมตรขึ้นไป จะมีสภาพอากาศที่เย็นและชุ่มฉ่ำอยู่ ทั้งนี้เพราะจะเป็นระดับความสูงของเมฆหมอก ทำให้สภาป่ามีเมฆและหมอกปกคลุมเกือบตลอดปี

พืชพรรณและสัตว์ป่า
สังคมพืชในพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์สามารถจำแนกออกเป็น
ป่าเต็งรัง พบกระจายทั่วๆไปในพื้นที่รอบๆ อุทยานแห่งชาติในระดับความสูงจากน้ำทะเล 400-750 เมตร ตามเนินเขาหรือสันเขาที่แห้งแล้ง หรือตามด้านลาดทิศตะวันตกและทิศใต้ของอุทยานแห่งชาติ ชนิดไม้ส่วนใหญ่ประกอบด้วย เต็ง รัง เหียง พลวง ก่อแพะ รกฟ้า รักใหญ่ ยอป่า มะขามป้อม ฯลฯ พืชอิงอาศัยพวกเอื้องแซะ เอื้องมะขาม เอื้องแปรงสีฟัน ฯลฯ นอกจากนี้ยังมีพวกมอส ไลเคน นมตำเลีย เกล็ดนาคราช ฯลฯ ส่วนพืชพื้นล่างจะเป็นไม้พุ่ม หญ้าชนิดต่างๆ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งหญ้าคา ไม้เถา และพืชล้มลุกชนิดต่างๆ ป่าเบญจพรรณ พบกระจายอยู่ทั่วพื้นที่รอบๆ อุทยานแห่งชาติในชั้นระดับความสูง 400-800 เมตรจากระดับน้ำทะเล ตามที่ลุ่มหรือตามแนวสองฝั่งของลำห้วย พันธุ์ไม้ที่พบได้แก่ สัก ตะแบก ประดู่ แดง มะเกิ้ม สมอไทย กาสามปีก สลีนก กระบก ซ้อ นอกจากนี้ยังมีไผ่ชนิดต่างๆ พืชอิงอาศัย เช่น เอื้องช้างกระ เอื้องขี้หมา ส่วนพืชพื้นล่างส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นพวกไม้พุ่ม หญ้าคา หญ้าแฝก หญ้าชนิดอื่นๆ ไม้เถา และพืชล้มลุกชนิดต่างๆ

ป่าดิบแล้ง พบกระจายเป็นหย่อมเล็กหย่อมน้อยในระดับความสูง 400-1,000 เมตร ตามบริเวณหุบเขา ริมลำห้วย และสบห้วยต่างๆ พันธุ์ไม้ที่พบได้แก่ ยางปาย ยางแดง ยางนา ตะเคียนทอง ก่อเดือย ก่อหยุม ก่อลิ้ม ประดู่ส้ม มะไฟป่า ชมพู่น้ำ ไทรย้อย เดื่อหูกวาง พืชพื้นล่างเป็นพืชที่ชอบขึ้นในที่มีความชื้นสูง เช่น กล้วยป่า หญ้าสองปล้อง เหมือดปลาซิว ตองสาด กระชายป่า ข่าลิง ผักเป็ดไทย ออสมันด้า กูด เฟิน ปาล์ม หวายไส้ไก่ หมากป่า และเขือง เป็นต้น

ป่าดิบเขาตอนล่าง เป็นป่าที่พบในพื้นที่ที่มีระดับความสูงจากน้ำทะเล 1,000-1,800 เมตร หรือในบริเวณตอนกลางของอุทยานแห่งชาติ ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะถูกทำลายจากชาวเขาที่อาศัยอยู่ในพื้นที่ ทำให้มีป่าที่มีอยู่เป็นป่าที่กำลังฟื้นสภาพ หรือป่ารุ่นใหม่ จะมีป่าดิบเขาดั่งเดิมเหลืออยู่บ้างเพียงเล็กน้อย สภาพโดยทั่วไปของป่าดิบเขาในพื้นที่ดอยอิทนนท์จึงมีความหลากหลายขึ้นอยู่กับระบบและวิธีการฟื้นฟูของสังคมพืช ชนิดป่าที่พบที่สำคัญได้แก่ ป่าสนล้วน ป่าก่อผสมสน ป่าก่อ และป่าดิบเขาดั่งเดิม พันธุ์ไม้เด่นที่พบได้แก่ สนสามใบ สารภีดอย เหมือดคนตัวผู้ ก่อแป้น ก่อใบเลื่อม กอเตี้ย ก่อแดง ก่อตาหมูหลวง ก่อนก ทะโล้ จำปีป่า กำลังเสือโคร่ง กล้วยฤาษี นมวัวดอย ฯลฯ

ป่าดิบเขาตอนบน ขึ้นอยู่ในพื้นที่ที่มีระดับความสูงจากน้ำทะเล 1,800 เมตรขึ้นไป สามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น ป่าดงดิบ-ป่าก่อชื้น ป่าดงดิบ เขตอบอุ่น และป่าพรุเขตอบอุ่น สภาพโดยทั่วไปเป็นป่าที่มีต้นไม้สูงใหญ่ และหลายแห่งจะมีลักษณะของป่าดึกดำบรรพ์ พืชพื้นล่างจะไม่แน่นทึบ ทำให้ตามกิ่ง ยอด และลำต้นของไม้ในป่าจะมีมอส กล้วยไม้ เฟิน กุหลาบพันปี สำเภาแดง ขึ้นปกคลุม พันธุ์ไม้ในป่าดิบเขาหรือป่าก่อชื้นได้แก่ ก่อดาน ก่อแอบ จำปีหลวง แกง นางพญาเสือโคร่ง กะทัง นอกจากนี้ยังมีไม้พุ่มและไม้เกาะเกี่ยวเช่น คำขาว กุหลาบขาว คำแดง และยังมีต้นโพสามหาง กระโถนฤาษี เป็นต้น ในบริเวณแอ่งน้ำและรอบๆ ป่าพรุจะมีหญ้าชนิดต่างๆ ขึ้นอยู่ เช่น บัวทอง พญาดง เทียน ผักหนอกดอย มะ แหลบ วาสุกรี บันดงเหลือง ต่างไก่ป่า กุง กูดขน ฯลฯ และบริเวณชายขอบป่าพรุจะมีกุหลาบพันปีสีแดง ซึ่งเป็นสายพันธุ์ที่พบเฉพาะบนยอดดอยอินทนนท์เท่านั้น

สัตว์ป่าในบริเวณอุทยานแห่งชาติที่นี้มีจำนวนลดลงไปมาก เนื่องจากถูกชาวเขาเผ่าต่างๆ ล่าเป็นอาหาร และป่าซึ่งเป็นที่อยู่อาศัยถูกถางลงมาก ทำให้สัตว์ใหญ่บางชนิดหมดไปจากป่านี้ สัตว์ที่เหลืออยู่ส่วนมากเป็นสัตว์ขนาดเล็ก เช่น กระรอก กระแตธรรมดา กระเล็นขนปลายหูสั้น อ้นเล็ก เม่นหางพวง อีเห็นข้างลาย ชะมดแผงสันหางดำ นกแซงแซวเล็กเหลือบ นกปรอดหัวสีเขม่า นกเด้าดินทุ่ง เหยี่ยว เพเรกริน ไก่ฟ้าหลังขาว นกเงือกคอแดง นกพญาไฟสีกุหลาบ กิ้งก่าหัวสีฟ้า จิ้งเหลนเรียวจุดดำ ตุ๊กแกบ้าน งูลายสอคอแดง กบห้วยสีข้างดำ เขียดหนอง อึ่งกราย คางคกเล็ก ปาดแคระฯลฯ แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม พื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ยังคงความสำคัญในด้านของการเป็นแหล่งของนกป่าที่สำคัญของประเทศไทย และเป็นแหล่งของสัตว์ป่าที่หายาก และมีอยู่เฉพาะถิ่นอยู่หลายชนิด ที่สำคัญได้แก่ หนูหญ้าดอย กระท่าง เต่าปูลู นกศิวะหางสีน้ำตาล นกปีกสั้นสีนำเงิน นกกระจิ๊ดคอสีเทา และนกกินปลีหางยาว

จังหวัดพิษณุโลกมีพื้นที่ประมาณ 10,815 ตารางกิโลเมตร ลักษณะภูมิประเทศเป็นภูเขาและที่ราบสลับป่าไม้ทางด้านตะวันออก นอกนั้นเป็นที่ราบลุ่มอยู่โดยทั่วไป มีแม่น้ำสำคัญคือ แม่น้ำน่านซึ่งไหลผ่านบริเวณตัวเมือง แบ่งการปกครองออกเป็น 9 อำเภอคือ อำเภอเมือง อำเภอวังทอง อำเภอพรหมพิราม อำเภอบางระกำ อำเภอบางกระทุ่ม อำเภอนครไทย อำเภอวัดโบสถ์ อำเภอชาติตระการ และอำเภอเนินมะปราง
ประวัติศาสตร์ หลักฐานการสร้างเมืองพิษณุโลกมีมาแต่พุทธศตวรรษที่ 15 สมัยขอมมีอำนาจปกครองแถบนี้ แต่เดิมมีชื่อเรียกว่า “เมืองสองแคว” เนื่องจากเมืองนี้ตั้งอยู่ระหว่างแม่น้ำน่าน และแม่น้ำแควน้อย หรือบริเวณที่ตั้งของวัดจุฬามณีในปัจจุบัน เมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ. 1900 สมเด็จพระมหาธรรมราชาลิไทแห่งกรุงสุโขทัย ได้โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ย้ายเมืองมาตั้งอยู่ ณ ตัวเมืองปัจจุบัน โดยมีฐานะเป็นเมืองลูกหลวง
สมัยอยุธยา เมืองพิษณุโลกทวีความสำคัญมากขึ้น เพราะเป็นเมืองกึ่งกลางระหว่างกรุงศรีอยุธยาและอาณาจักรฝ่ายเหนือ สมเด็จพระบรมไตรโลกนารถทรงปฏิรูปการปกครองและได้เสด็จมาประทับที่เมืองนี้ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2006 จนสิ้นรัชกาลในปี พ.ศ. 2031 ช่วงนั้นพิษณุโลกเป็นราชธานีแทนกรุงศรีอยุธยานานถึง 25 ปี หลังรัชสมัยของพระองค์พิษณุโลกมีฐานะเป็นเมืองลูกหลวง เป็นหน้าด่านสำคัญที่จะสกัดกั้นกองทัพพม่า เมื่อครั้งพระนเรศวรมหาราชดำรงฐานะพระมหาอุปราชครองเมืองพิษณุโลก ระยะนั้นไทยตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของพม่า สมเด็จพระนเรศวรได้ทรงรวบรวมชายฉกรรจ์ชาวพิษณุโลกกอบกู้อิสรภาพชาติไทยได้ในปี พ.ศ. 2127
ในสมัยกรุงธนบุรี พิษณุโลกเป็นสถานที่ตั้งมั่นรับศึกพม่า เมื่อครั้งกองทัพของอะแซหวุ่นกี้มาตีเมืองพิษณุโลก ในปี พ.ศ. 2318 อะแซหวุ่นกี้ต้องเผชิญการต่อสู้อย่างทรหดกับเจ้าพระยาจักรีและเจ้าพระยาสุรสีห์ถึงขนาดต้องขอดูตัว และได้ทำนายเจ้าพระยาจักรีว่าต่อไปจะได้เป็นกษัตริย์
ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกได้ทรงดำริให้รื้อกำแพงเมืองพิษณูโลกเพื่อไม่ให้ข้าศึกใช้เป็นที่มั่น ครั้นถึงปี พ.ศ. 2437 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ยกฐานะเมืองพิษณุโลกขึ้นเป็นมณฑลเรียกว่า มณฑลพิษณุโลก ต่อมาเมื่อยกเลิกการปกครองแบบมณฑลแล้ว พิษณุโลกจึงมีฐานะเป็นจังหวัดเรื่อยมาจนปัจจุบัน

Lonely Planet has included London on a list of the 10 best value destinations in the world to visit in the coming year in a new book published this week.

Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2010 captures the world’s hottest travel trends, destinations, journeys and experiences for the year ahead, bringing together the expertise of Lonely Planet authors, staff and travellers. This is Lonely Planet’s fifth eagerly-awaited annual collection of the best places to go and the best things to do around the world for the year ahead

London makes the list because “Long ludicrously expensive, London has become much more affordable for visitors from abroad, if not for its residents.” (page 148)

Lonely Planet Travel Editor Tom Hall said: “It may seem a surprising inclusion but as a direct result of the economic crisis London has become much more accessible to foreign visitors. The tables have turned and London’s reputation as one of the world’s most expensive cities is over.”

Other places which are tipped as 2010s best-value destinations include Iceland, following the collapse of its currency, and perennial cheap favourites such as Thailand and Mexico. Las Vegas also makes the list due to the huge discounts available as a result of being hit hard by the credit crunch.

Pattaya

Discovered by American GI's during the Vietnam War, the once sleepy fishing village of Pattaya has become one of Thailand's premier beach resorts. Koh Chang

Looking for the ultimate "unspoiled" Thai paradise, people might say it is Koh Chang (Elephant Island). It is called Koh Chang due to the shape of the island, which resembles a sleeping elephant. Set in the Gulf of Thailand just 315 kilometers south-east of Bangkok, the island is incredibly mountainous and lush. With 75 percent of undisturbed rainforest, Koh Chang is perhaps the best-preserved island in Southeast Asia. Beaches, waterfalls, coral reefs and wildlife abound.

Koh Chang had escaped heavy development for so long thanks to its difficult accessible location, some national park protection and the near-then turbulent situation in Cambodia. After Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced his vision for Koh Chang in October 2001, a spree of construction of luxury resorts has erupted. Restaurants, pubs, tour agencies, shops and minimarts are springing up like mushrooms. Land prices have soared more than double those of last year. Moreover, the recent construction of a four-lane highway from Bangkok, plus newly opened airport in Trat will certainly help promoting the island even further.

Koh Chang, a 30-kilometer strip of island with spectacular waterfalls, a rich evergreen forest, idyllic scenery, clear blue waters, crystalline sand and dazzling coral reefs, is indeed an ideal place for beach and nature lovers. For snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts, Koh Chang National Marine Park, acclaimed for its incredible corals and aquatic life - should not be missed.

Kanchanaburi

The westernmost province of Thailand has not only gained fame for its strikingly beautiful landscape - characterized by impressive waterfalls and caves, tranquil river scenery and verdant national parks - but also for its tragic history. During World War II Asian laborers and allied prisoners of war were forced to build the Burma-Siam Railway through the province. The most famous reminder of this tragedy is the "Bridge On the River Kwai," which was immortalized in books and the motion picture of the same name.

Southern Thailand

Phuket/Khao Lak

Dubbed the "Pearl of the South," Phuket is Thailand's largest island and one of the most popular holiday destinations in Southeast Asia. It is also the wealthiest province in the country. With its spectacular beaches, sparkling crystal-clear blue waters, picturesque landscape, historical and cultural sights as well as endless offers of all imaginable entertaining amenities, Phuket truly is a "dream-come-true" destination. North Eastern Thailand

Nakhon Ratchasima

Nakhon Ratchasima, commonly known as "Korat," is the gateway to the Northeast and an excellent starting point for excursions to various famous Khmer ruins in the region. The most important ones are Prasat Hin Phimai, Prasat Hin Khao Phnom Rung and Prasat Hin Muang Tam. The city itself has a historical monument, the "Thao Suranari Monument," that was built in memory of a brave woman (Khun Ying Mo) who successfully defended Korat against an attack by Lao invaders in 1826. Each year a weeklong festival is held in her honor.

Nakhon Phanom

Nakhon Phanom is situated on the bank of the Mekong River opposite the Laotian town of Thakaek. The Mekong River is barely 1 kilometer wide at this point and in the dry season a passage becomes exposed, making it almost possible to walk across to Laos. Nakhon Phanom is also known as the "City of the Mountains" due to its outstanding geographical position. It acts as a viewpoint overlooking the splendid mountains beyond the Laotian border. Thanks to the influences of Lao, Vietnamese and other ethnic groups that immigrated to this region over the centuries, Nakhon Phanom has obtained quite unique customs, dialects and cuisine. One of these extraordinary customs is the welcome and blessing ceremony called "Bai-Sri-Su-Kwan." This lovely town is a good place to spend a few relaxing days by the Mekong.

International standard ready-made sportswear and leisurewear is inexpensive and quality tailors and dressmakers offer reliable 24-hour service in Bangkok and major tourist destination.

Clothing : We're one of the world's leading manufacturers of ready-to-wear clothing. Fashion boutiques are found in every shopping mall, while cheaper clothing such as T-shirts and jeans are available at bargain prices from street vendors. Custom tailoring is also very affordable and tailors can produce or copy most styles in just a few days.

Silk : Probably the most famous of all our kingdom's handicrafts, silk is available in a range of colours, patterns and plys, and is sold by the yard, or as ready-made clothing and souvenir items. A unique style of Thai silk is Mat Mee, a tie-dye silk traditional to the North-east. The best known outlet for Thai silk is undoubtedly Jim Thompson's shop at the top of Surawong Road in Bangkok.

Cotton & Batik : Our Thai cottons have become increasingly popular and are a good deal. Particularly notable are the hilltribe cottons woven by the tribal people of the North, typically displaying bold designs and often lavish embroidery. Equally distinctive are original batiks crafted at several studios in Bangkok.

Pewterware : Pewter is fashioned with great skill by Thai craftsmen, and the smooth, silky finish of this attractive alloy is enhanced by delicate relief decoration. Pewterware items include plates, boxes, vases and pocket flasks.

Gem : Bangkok is the coloured gemstone capital of the world. Rubies and sapphires are indigenous stones, but virtually all coloured gems, as well as diamonds, are available. Shoppers should exercise caution and buy from reputable dealers only.

Antiques : Thai, Chinese, Burmese and Khmer antiques are excellent buys. There is an export ban on certain pieces, particularly Buddha images. Other pieces may require an export license, but any reputable dealer will be able to advise on restrictions and any necessary documentation.

Ceramics : Both traditional and contemporary styles of pottery are available throughout our kingdom. Best known are the distinctive sea-green celadons from the Sukothai area, and the central provinces' colourful Benjarong (five color) porcelain, which are unique to our country.

Nielloware : Practiced in the South for hundreds of years, nielloware is the craft of decorating gold and silver objects with delicate etched designs filled with a metal ware. Nielloware trays, boxes, vases and other items are some of our best buys.

Lacquerware : A specialty of Chiang-Mai and the north, this craft involves coating split bamboo or wood with lacquer, then adding intricate hand-painted designs typically gold-on-black lacquer or yellow and green on a red brown background. Look out for lacquerware bowls, boxes, trays and other items for decoration or for souvenirs.

Thai Orchids : We're famous for our huge variety of orchids and their magnificent colours and durable beauty make them a popular purchase. Specially packaged flowers, complete with water supply, are easily transported and can be conveniently purchased at Bangkok International Airport.

Furniture : Rattan and rosewood furniture items are available in many designs and styles and can also be made to order. Shops in Bangkok and Chiang Mai have a wide selection and can arrange shipment overseas.

Hilltribe Crafts : The tribal groups who live in the hills of the north make a variety of beautifully embroidered textiles and silver jewellery. Chiang Mai is the centre for such goods.

Shopping Tips

Fixed prices are the norm in department stores and a number of shops in Bangkok, but at most other places bargaining is acceptable and expected. Generally, shopping in Thailand is easy, fun and very rewarding, but the following advice is useful especially when making gem and jewellery purchases :

- Shop around to compare prices - this is especially important with gems and jewellery.
- Obtain a receipt for goods bought and check if is correct before leaving the shop
- Never let a tout or new found friend take you shopping. Stores give commission to these people, and the cost is reflected in the price you pay.

- In general, jewellery items cannot be returned. If refunds are allowed, then often 25-30% of the selling price will be deducted as “costs of damages”. More reputable companies may offer a full refund although usually only within a certain time limit, such as 30 days. Do not believe any claims by shop owners that purchases can be refunded at Thai embassies, consulates or other government offices overseas.

- Reputable shops will give a written agreement to a full refund on any goods returned within 90 days. If a shop refuses to do this, go eslewhere.

- Shops in hotel arcades pay high rents and accordingly prices tend to be higher than at street shops. On the other hand, hotel arcades are very convenient if you have little time for shopping.

Packing and Shipping Services

Thanks to the ever-increasing number of tourists coming to Thailand, most shops are experienced at shipping abroad and will attend to all the documents such as insurance, customs and necessary permits. The Central Post Office also offers a parcel-wrapping service for those who want to make small shipments themselves. For larger items or bulk shipments, there are several Bangkok companies who specialise in such matters.

VAT Refund

Visitors entering the Kingdom on tourist visas are entitled to refunds of the 7% value added tax (VAT) paid on goods purchased at shops, department stores and other retail outlets displaying " VAT Refund for Tourists " signs, where tax refund application forms are available. - There are no promotions, shows or special sales on jewelry authorized by the government or any official agencies at any time of the year.

You might have heard about it, or even seen it on TV—the furious punches, crushing elbow strikes, lethal kicks, powerful grappling and artful feints. But nothing compares to seeing them executed to loud cheers and heart-racing tune of an accompanying wind-and-percussion ensemble. Welcome to the exciting world of Muay Thai, a martial art like no others, and a proud heritage of a nation.
The history of Muay Thai is interwoven with the history of the Thai people. A gentle, peace-loving people, for centuries Thais had to defend themselves and their land from aggressive powers. They developed a form of close, hand-to-hand combat best suited for the kind of rough-terrain battle they were fighting. Over time it became a rite of passage for Thai men to take up training in this martial art. King Naresuan the Great (1555-1605), one of the country’s most celebrated warrior-heroes, is believed to have been an excellent boxer himself, and it was he who made Muay Thai a required part of military training. Another milestone in the history of Muay Thai was the triumph of Nai Khanom Tom over 10 Burmese boxers in 1774. Taken captive after the Thai capital fell in 1767, Nai Khanom Tom was picked to fight before the Burmese king. After defeating ten of them in a row, he was freed and returned home a hero.

In the old days, Muay Thai was a dangerous sport, with no safety gear of any kind for the fighters, and only lengths of cords to wrap around the fists in place of gloves. Over the years rules have been written along the line of international boxing regulations. In recent years the sport has attracted a wide following outside of the country, and training facilities have been set up in countries as far as the U.S. and the former Soviet states. In 1995 the World Muay Thai Council was set up by cabinet resolution in 1995 to promote this national heritage at national and international levels. At a conference held that same year, 78 member countries voted for the establishment of a training school where all elements of Muay Thai would be taught. The Muay Thai Institute was founded in 1997 and is now the only training school accredited by the Ministry of Education.

An International Passion
Muay Thai, along with soccer, is certainly the most passionately followed sport in the country. Television networks broadcast fights five days a week, and the fight results at major stadiums are reported in all major newspapers. International boxing is also very popular, and the country has produced dozens of world champions, but they all started out as Muay Thai fighters. So it is not surprising that a boy as young as seven or eight would start training to become one—and many do, at stables across the country. Most provincial capitals have a boxing ring, but the ultimate dream of young boxers is to fight at Lumpini or Ratchadamnoen, the biggest and most famous stadiums in the country. Lumpini and Ratchadamnoen alternate, so there is a fight program every night. Tickets on an average evening are 220, 440 and 1,000 baht, but on big nights prices of ringside seats may go up to 2,000 baht. Ratchadamnoen’s Sunday Special rates are good bargains, with ringside tickets going for 500 baht each. Fights usually begins around 6:30 p.m., with preliminary bouts featuring younger, less experienced boxers, and build up towards the main event, usually around nine o’clock.

Muay Thai is fought in five three-minute rounds with two-minute breaks in between. The fight is preceded by a wai khru dance, in which each contestant pays homage to his teachers. Besides the symbolic meaning, the dance is a good warm-up exercise. You will notice that each boxer wears a headband and armbands. The headband, called mongkhol, is believed to bestow luck to the wearer since it has been blessed by a monk or the boxer’s own teacher. Since Buddhism and the teacher play important roles in the life of Thais, the headband is both a lucky charm and a spiritual object. It will be removed after the wai khru dance, and only by the boxer’s trainer. The armbands, meanwhile, are believed to offer protection and are only removed when the fight has ended.

A match is decided by a knockout or by points. Three judges decide who carries the round and the one who wins the most rounds, win the fight. The referee plays a very important role, since boxers’ safety depends on his decision.

To one side of the ring is the band section, comprising a Javanese clarinet, drums and cymbals. They accompany the fight from the homage dance to the conclusion. The tempo goes up as the action inside the ring intensifies. The musicians are mostly old-timers who have seen just about anything, yet their music always makes the heart race faster. It is said that the tune is a siren song that the true Muay Thai devotee can never resist.

On fight nights at major stadiums, especially at Lumpini and Ratchadamnoen, tourists fill up a sizable portion of the seats, and the number is growing. Most opt to sit at ringside, to see the action up close. On nights of major events, usually advertised days in advance, it can be hard to get tickets. You might want to book through your hotels or travel agents.

Learning Muay Thai

Muay Thai, with its emphasis on both offense and defense as well as on stamina, is a martial art anyone can learn: men, women, young or old. With the interest in Muay Thai growing fast, martial-art schools in Europe, America and Asia have added it to their curricula. Some hire former Muay Thai champions as instructors, others have trainers who studied with Thai teachers. These schools may teach all the right moves and maneuvers, but Muay Thai isn’t just about punches and kicks.

To learn Muay Thai is to learn about its roots and its purpose, and there’s nowhere better to do that than in its homeland. In the past, foreigners wanting “the real thing” would go to one of the stables, where training focuses on professional competition. For those not so inclined, there wasn’t much choice, and language was sometimes a problem. Not anymore, since Thailand now has a school for total Muay Thai education for both professionals and amateurs.

Muay Thai Institute
The Muay Thai Institute was established with the goal of preserving and promoting the art of Muay Thai and making it accessible to all. The Institute, which is located in Rangsit, just north of Bangkok International Airport, offers accredited training courses for boxers, instructors and referees. Opened in 1997, the Institute is run by a professional team of Muay Thai instructors, promoters and officials. Its staff instructors are all former champions, hold at least a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and speak English. Graduates will received a certificate recognized by the Thai Ministry of Education and the World Muay Thai Council. Since its opening, the school has trained hundreds of amateurs and professionals. Students have come from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, the U.K., and other parts of the world. Thai students, many of them girls and young women, also come for recreational and professional courses.

The Fundamental Muay Thai Program consists of Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Professional levels and takes 120 day to complete. The program was designed to provide students with the historical and cultural background to Muay Thai as well as the physical skills and fitness training. The course includes a study tour to Bangkok’s major stadiums, so students can experience the real thing live.

Muay Thai for Instructors is ideal for those who want to become Muay Thai instructors or to run training schools. The program comprises three 15-day courses.

Muay Thai for Referees and Judges is divided into three levels of proficiency: local, national and international, each taking 15 days.

The Muay Thai Institute occupies a complex next door to Rangsit Stadium. Classes take place in the classroom and in the well-equipped gym. Students have access to the in-house fitness facilities and Muay Thai library. Dormitory-style accommodation, with five bunkbeds to a room, TV, and fridge, and meals are available. The Institute can arrange visa and paperwork for applicants to any of the courses.

Thailand is situated in South-East Asia, covering an area of nearly 513,115 square kilometres. It is roughly the size of France. With a well-developed infrastructure, a free-enterprise economy, and generally pro-investment policies, Thailand appears to have fully recovered from the 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis. The country was one of East Asia’s best performers from 2002-04. Boosted by strong export growth, the Thai economy grew 4.5% in 2007. Thailand’s Orchids

Thailand is the worlds largest orchid exporter that boasts over one thousand different species both wild and cultivated hybrids. Last year (2007) orchid exports topped 61.2 million U.S. dollars and even in a bad economy they should surpass that this year.

The majority of orchid exports are to Japan followed by the United States and then Europe. Although there has been emerging competition from the likes of Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam they still only represent a small percentage of the orchids that Thailand exports. Even so Thailand has stepped up efforts in new markets such as China and the United Arab Emerites with a 70% to 100% increase in exports to China in the last year alone.

In Thailand orchids are grown mainly in Bangkok and surrounding provinces such as Chon Buri ( where Nong Nooch Tropical Gardens is located), Saphan Buri, Samut Sakhon, Ratchaburi, Pathum Thani, and Ayutthaya. Mainly because the climate in these areas is perfect for orchid cultivation. All together Thailand Orchid producers and plantations grow their beautiful crop on roughly 6000 acres of land.

It was about fifty years ago that the Thai’s became serious about growing and cultivating orchids when Prince Krompranakornsawanvorapinit got into orchid growing as a hobby and commercial interest. In 1957 the Orchid Society of Thailand was formed by Royal Patronage. Since then orchids have become their largest flower export shipping 54% of their crop overseas yearly with the remainder being sold locally.

Thailand’s orchids usually flower between July and October otherwise known as Thailand’s rainy season. The colorful rich tapestry of orchids can be seen throughout the country and are truly a sight to see.

Happiness of Living

Sustainable agricultural and organic farming is an alternative way to live life, preserve a culture, and protect nature in Northern Thailand.

Ek-ii-aek-aekkk…the Thai language call of the roosters aroused me from my warm, comfortable mattress. I can glimpse the sun beams seeping through the walls and under the wooden door. I can sense chilly, white fog of the Thailand winter while walking downstairs to help my host mother prepare vegetables to sell at market.

“You seem sleepy. Why don’t you go back to your bed and sleep longer?”
Mae Ratri asked gently. Mae in this instance means ‘mother’ and is the way to address ones host mother; for about 2 weeks I was very blessed to have Mae Ratri Kruengngern’s as my surrogate mother.

Mae Ratri and her family are a rural farming family in Mae Tha, an idyllic green village in Northern Thailand. I was part of a group of university students studying sustainable agriculture and as inviting as the offer of extra sleep sounded, I was much more excited to continue with another day of learning.

Mae Tha is a small community of Mae-On sub-district in Chiang Mai, located amidst the mountains on the boundary of Lamphun province. Most of the population speaks the “Yong” dialect or the Thai language.

Mae Tha villagers earn a living by farming rice and cultivating indigenous vegetables using organic and sustainable practices.

Mr. Phat or Por Phat, dressed in his pale blue cotton shirt, traditional style pants and wearing flip-flops, is a leader of the village who firstly introduced organic farming and sustainable way of living to people in Mae Tha.

The transition process to change the farms in Mae Tha from chemical to organic ran effectively since there was a good cooperation from villagers in the community.

“I dare say it is because our families have a long and dear relationship. Our past generations live here. We are all related and that support is the community’s strength” Por Phat said proudly.

Most mornings people will venture out to their own farms but if there is a time of harvesting they will willingly go to help others from farm to farm.

The most impressive thing about farming and living in Mae Tha is learning how to give and receive. You will always get assistance whenever you need and the state of giving perpetuates when you feel that you could help others. That is the beautiful and endless circle of support that people in Mae Tha adopted from their ancestors and pass on through the generations.

The organic food selling areas are established by Institute for Sustainable Agricultural Communities or ISAC, an organization that aims to build and support sustainable agriculture communities in Chiang Mai.

The sun shines more brightly as it is time for a big truck to come and pick up both the produce and the sellers for the trip to the market.

Mr. Weerapon Thamkhun, one of the ISAC’s committee members said “giving high priority on home consumption is our first concern.” He added “the goal of Organic Market is to promote the products from natural processes with not using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, including processing and marketing.”

The number of organic food consumers is increasing due to the increasing attention to health concerns and agricultural sustainability.

The smiling faces of the people who come and buy organic vegetables at the market marks the appreciation of receiving healthy, safe foods and reasonable price. The increasing demand and appreciation for quality is the challenge that the organic and sustainable farming community readily accepts.

Mrs. Wannapa Tachai, a fan of organic food said “organic farming is the greatest idea for both consumers and farmers. We both have a clean and safe food for our health.”

Mae Ratri turned her face to Mrs. Wannapa and gave her a nod. “And it seems we, both farmers and consumers, are friends. They will pay a reasonable price for the good quality of fresh vegetables, while we can also provide them healthy food.”

Mae Ratri added that she felt like it is a kind of making merit. Since she and people in the village produce the safe organic food for consumers, not introducing potentially harmful chemicals.

The sunlight gets stronger and moves its position to the top of our head showing that it is time to have lunch and go back home. We all gathered around and had lunch together. Sharing food is a common thing to Mae Ratri and her friends because it shows the easy and close relationship of people in Mae Tha.

After the meal, the people were ready to go back home and prepare for working in their farms. We planted, plugged, watered, pulled weeds, and hand dug the soil. The work was exhausting but every single drop of sweat will in turn be reward when the vegetables are grown.

Since it is during winter time, broccoli, cauliflowers, and many kinds of winter green vegetables can be grown. So we grab a hoe and started plowing new plots for them.

The sun still shines brightly bringing hotness and humidity but the cool breeze helps ease the heat. So, we keep working the farm.

Time passed by, the sound of birds flying back to their nests was a sign that it was time to finish work.

We went back home and cleaned ourselves. I found that although working in the farm was tiring and made my two palms rough and bruised, it brought freshness and delight to me.

“I feel happy because I know that I have spent my sweat for growing healthy and safe foods for the goodness of my customers”, Mae Ratri’s words have repeated several times in my mind.

Organic farming is not only bringing her family safe food for healthy life, but also widens the view to perceive the rule of nature. The more they protect nature by farm with natural methods, the longer nature stays with them.

“We have only one chance to live our lives. Being healthy and to live happily in sufficiency are much more important than earning a sum of money and being wealthy by trickery and take-advantage doings”, Mae Ratri remarked.

I think these are strong words of wisdom learned from generations of people living close to the land and respecting strong community values.

Tom Kha Kai (Chicken in Coconut Milk Soup)		4. Tom Kha Kai (Chicken in Coconut Milk Soup)Although Tom Kha Kai is another variation of chicken soup, it deserves the No.4 because of its unparalleled taste and popularity. Similar to Tom Yam Kai, the broth is prepared with many types of Thai herbs with the special addition of coconut milk that makes this soup unique. Though the soup is seasoned with chili, lime and fish sauce just like Tom Kha Kai, thanks to the coconut milk, the broth is milder and less spicy. This is probably more preffered by non-spicy eaters.
Kang Keaw Wan Kai (Green Chicken Curry)		3. Kang Keaw Wan Gai (Green Chicken Curry)Since we are having three dishes in a row made of “Gai”, you would have guessed that it is the Thai word for chicken. Chicken is on of the popular meats used in Thai cuisine; it is usually available in most curry and soup. Kang Kiew Wan, literally translated as “Sweet Green Curry”, is nicely sweet and slightly spicy and tastes very delightful with a proper blend of the spiciness from green curry chili paste, blandness from coconut milk, sweetness of sugar and saltiness of fish sauce. It is usually eaten with steamed rice or served as a sauce to rice noodle known as “Kanom Jeen” a more ’spaghetti-like’ noodle.
Pad Thai (Fried Noodle)		2. Pad Thai (Fried Noodle)This national dish prides itself for its long history traced back in previous centuries. Pad Thai flaunts the authenticity of Thai culinary arts in using only fresh and best ingredients and the well-balancing of the five fundamental flavors. The stir-fried noodle has become popular because it tastes yummy and is served with a variety of seasonings to suit your tastes. Through history, Pad Thai has evolved into two different styles: the classic and the variation. The classic Pad Thai is a stir-fried noodle with eggs, fish sauce, tamarind juice, red chili pepper plus bean sprouts, shrimp and tofu and garnished with crushed peanuts and coriander while another style is relatively dry and lightly-flavored. Tom Yam Goong is truly one of a kind with its fierce spiciness and sourness and a blatant use of fragrant herbs including galangal, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, shallot, tamarind and chili pepper. There are two styles of Tom Yam; the clear spicy soup and thick spicy soup. The latter is cooked by adding coconut milk or milk to the broth in order to thicken the stock and give the dish a milder flavor. Tom Yam is very versatile and can be made with prawns, chicken, fish and mix of seafood, and mushroom. Tom Yam Goong is the most popular variety of Tom Yam since Spicy Shrimp Soup is the original. Though not very surprising, Tom Yam Goong is definitely a signature dish of Thailand.

Even though it is commonly known that Thai food utilizes many health herbs and spices, there have always been debates whether Thai food is really good for health since they tend to be somewhat spicey and oily. I think that it really depends on each dish; sure some can be highly caloric but many dishes are recogized as being very nutritious and healthy. Garlic, for example, is widely used in Thai food and very good healthwise because it can prevent heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and cancer.

No matter what the food is, the same old concept of moderate intake comes into play. From Mcdonald’s burger to Japanese Sushi, a key is to avoid overconsumption. Thus, a claim that Thai food is mainly coconut-based and fattening should never be an adequate reason for you to go order a Big Mac. Spoil your taste buds with Thai food – tasty and healthy!

Throughout the three days of the Songkran Festival (technically April 13-15, 2010) plus a few days before and after, Thailand sets the stage for what is undeniably the World’s Biggest Water Fight. There is absolutely no way that you will walk the streets of Thailand without getting wet during the festival – and here it comes! …Uh oh!! …SPLASH!!!

Water throwing and splashing and water gunning is a main event during Songkran; almost everyone participates and there are few rules, giving anyone the right to ambush anyone else and completely drench them from head to toe. This could also be accompanied by “Pra-pang” or smearing liquid talcum powder on people’s faces and on vehicles – although the talcum playing is discouraged in some provinces.

Many Songkran water players will carry a water tank and the entire family in the back of their pick-up truck and drive around the town as a full assault vehicle. Most people gather on the streets and in front of their businesses with buckets of water ready cool off anybody that passes by.

Gee that sounds kind of confrontational, right? Wrong!, this all takes place in the burning heat of Thailand’s hottest month; people are in 100% joyous spirits throughout the festival and all you can see is smiles, smiles and more smiles… everywhere!! These people are having the best times of their lives and as a visitor taking place you will feel truly blessed to take part in such an amazing, special event.

Songkran Festival - Foreigners with Water Pistols

For those planning to join in this water splendor, people in different regions celebrate the Songkran Festival slightly differently and center the event to certain areas. To make the most of your Songkran experience, you should choose your destination(s) and then get a bit of a plan together for how to join in the festivities. I will talk briefly about some of the most popular and favored Thailand destinations for the most ‘outrageous’ Songkran experience: Bangkok, Khon Kaen, Pattaya, Koh Samui, Phuket and Chiang Mai.

Bangkok Songkran Festival is maybe most frenzied on the world-famous Khao Sarn road – the Bangkok center for budget travelers and backpackers. Songkran water fighting along Khao Sarn road has however been less frenzied because you will see many police there to advise some ‘crazy’ revelers on how to ‘sprinkle’ water properly. Yet, it is still safe to say that Khao Sarn Road offers one of the best Songkran experiences in Thailand. Other popular areas in Bangkok are of course Nana Plaza in the Sukhumvit area and Sathorn Road, another popular area for attracting foreigners (near Soi Patpong, one of the most notoriously renowned ‘entertainment’ streets in the world).

In the Northeastern region, we have the spin-off of Khao Sarn Road, which is Khao Niew Road in the city of Khon Kaen. Just like the Khao Sarn Road, a huge number of Songkran celebrants each year will throng into the road to get soaked up and enjoy the music performances. The highlight of the Songkran in Khon Kaen includes enjoying the beautiful yellow blossom of Ratchaphreuk (Dok Koon), a local seasonal flower which blooms during the hot season.

If you prefer beachside Songkran experience, you have three main choices: Phuket, Pattaya, and Koh Samui all rank up there for numbers of people, especially foreign tourists. Songkran in Pattaya is the longest festival since the last and biggest day of celebration is on 19th April so technically the water fight lasts for more than a week! In Phuket, the festival takes place with fervor at Patong Beach. Also, you can enjoy the ultimate “Mid-Night Songkran” at Soi Bang La. In Samui most of the activity takes place in Chawaeng but really the entire circumference of the island is a Songkran zone and a drive of the circumference can take a couple hours longer than usual.

Chiang Mai, in the northern part of Thailand, is the number one destination for Songkran festival in Thailand. The Capital of Northern Thailand is surrounded by an ancient moat that is filled to the brim and surrounded by literally tens of thousands of revelers. The water fighting and splashing in Chiang Mai is on all sides of the moat and there are also large crowds on Huay Kaew Road. Kad Suan Kaew Plaza holds a Songkran event each year with thousands of fun-seekers dancing and playing and just enjoying life. The whole city is drowned in the ocean of fun and joy; the heat seems to matter no more to the thousands of tourists, tens of thousands of Thais all celebrating the frenzy that is Songkran festival.

Songkran splendor in Thailand is absolutely the perfect time to put away all worries and cares of the western lifestyle. It is a time to let loose, wash away your stress and take part in something you can not even imagine. Arm yourself with a water pistol, put on your dry weave, and leave the camera in the room unless it is waterproof. Thailand is a beautiful country full of the most welcoming people in the world and Songkran Festival is without a doubt something that must be experienced in this lifetime. Phi Ta Khon Festival

As the most well-known event of Loei province in the Northeastern Thailand, Phi Ta Khon is the ultimate yearly celebration. The Thailand Ghost Festival is well regarded as an annual event where revelers put on rather hilarious, yet ghostly, masks made of bamboo and wicker and join in the Ghost parade. Regarded as a rain-making ceremony, this spooky festivity is held annually in the beginning of rainy season. This year the event will be held on 12 – 14 June at Dan Sai District of Loei province. Unlike Halloween, the ghosts and poltergeists in Phi Ta Khon seek their fun under full daylight.

Phi Ta Khon is a well-blended event between making merit, having a party, and reenacting the long-relayed folklore of King Vessandorn, the Buddha-to-be reincarnation. Buddhist legend has it that the townspeople were angry that the charitable King gave away two precious white elephant to another King who asked for them. They then forcibly put him into exile. The angels and spirits in the forest admired his unconditional generosity so they formed a procession to escort him back to rule the town. The townspeople became overjoyed with his epiphany and so, legend has it, the Phi Ta Khon celebration has its origins.

Big Ghost at Phi Ta Khon Festival

The festival will run for three days and the first day will be the masked procession of ghosts. The celebrants will put on fancy ghost masks and costumes which are handmade from colorfully-painted bamboo rice steamers and decorated with colorful strips of cloth sewn together. The most common appearance of Phi Ta Khon ghosts is the oversized head and long hooked nose, though you can also see many versions of the ghosts with long teeth or white face. Along the road, you can get spooked and teased by these playful ghosts and you’ll readily find yourself becoming a part of the joyful spirit.

On the second day, the villagers form up another procession that dances along the streets into a temple and then firing off homemade bamboo rockets to incite the gods to give rain and a bountiful harvest. In some areas there will be competitions for the best mask, costumes and dancing with the winners of each contest receiving a coveted brass plaque. On the last day of the event, the villagers will meet up at a local temple to listen and recite the sacred thirteen sermons of Buddha, chanted by local monks. To mark the end of the event, the ghosts then take off their masks and costumes and shelve them for the next year’s celebration.

ปัญหาริมฝีปากดำส่วนใหญ่มักเกิดจากพันธุกรรม หรือเพราะสูบบุหรี่จัด โอกาสที่จะทำให้ปากกลับมาแดงอมชมพูดั่งสาวแรกรุ่นเหลือน้อยมาก ทำได้แค่เพียงลดความคล้ำลงไปบ้างด้วยการทาลิปบาล์มบ่อยๆ เพื่อช่วยบำรุงริมฝีปากให้ชุ่มชื้น และมีส่วนช่วยลดรอยคล้ำได้ด้วย
ขอแนะนำลิปบาล์มของ Shu Uemura, M.A.C และที่มหัสจรรย์มาก็คือ Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant ของ Elizabeth Arden ที่จัดการปัญหาปากแห้งได้อยู่หมัด และยังใช้ทาผิวหน้าเพื่อเพิ่มความชุ่มชื้นได้ด้วย โดยเฉพาะในกรณีที่ผิวไหม้จากแสงแดด ช่วยได้มากทีเดียวค่ะ

ปากแห้ง

ฟันเหลือง
