If you have your Nagios monitoring server published on the public Internet and have administrators working from home or have engineers oncall for troubleshooting then you can better off with the following iPhone applications to keep you upto date on whats going on with your network (I’m assuming you are all those rich administrators with iPhones hanging in your pockets).

These two are great convenience applications making it simple to stay on top of your network status. Before we look into the applications, it is important that we look at some security considerations. If you are publishing your Nagios Monitoring server on the Public Internet, it is important to realise the fact, Nagios can be a treasure for information for any hacker on the internet so make sure that the access is not on simple HTTP and is on SSL (HTTPS). Move your Nagios server onto the DMZ in your network and open only the required ports (HTTPS only)

iNag

Courtesy John's iApps Site

iNag is a iPhone application that allows you to view your Nagios monitored network from anywhere, acknowledge host and services problems right from your phone, view Daily event logs all using a fast and secure method that does not require you to open your Nagios installation to the world.

iNags unique conduit approach makes it very fast on Edge/3G or WiFi connections, iNag can download a typical 300+ service network in less than 10 seconds. iNag comes with an open source php script that can be put on any web server and supports SSL and web based authentication, the iNag conduit script “inag.php” also has a built in authentication mechanism for added security.

Features include

Tactical overview showing the current state of your network
Host view and Service View listing Hosts/Services grouped by hosts
Host Details and Service Details to look into details of each Host/Service
Acknowledge Host/Service problems right from you iPhone/iPod touch
Log View to view the current days event log, filtering by hour, and event types

Bandwidth Monitor NG (bwm-ng) is a simple small console based live Network and Disk I/O Bandwidth monitor for Linux, Unix, BSD,Solaris, Mac OSx, Windows based platforms.

There is no fancy GUI or interfaces simple console utility which installs and runs flawlessly showing live stats of your Network or Disk I/O stats.

Disk I/O support is only added in the latest stable version bwm-ng 0.6 and Disk I/O is not supported on Windows Platforms yet.

Features include

support for /proc/net/dev, netstat, getifaddr, sysctl, kstat for Network Monitoring

support for /proc/diskstats /proc/partitions, IOKit, devstat and libstatgrab for Disk I/O Monitoring

Support for unlimited number of Network interfaces/devices

Dynamic Addition and Deletion of interfaces/devices to the list

Whitelist and blacklist of interfaces/devices

Output formats of KB/s, Kb/s, packets, errors, average, max and total sum

Output in curses, plain console, CSV or HTML

While packages are available for most of the platforms, installation is fairly straight forward. Download, compile and install as follows:

I did the installation in Debian but should be the same for most of the platforms

Download

debian4R2Base:/etc# wget http://www.gropp.org/bwm-ng/bwm-ng-0.6.tar.gz

Untar & Unzip

debian4R2Base:/etc# tar -zxvf bwm-ng-0.6.tar.gz

Compile & Install

debian4R2Base:/etc# cd bwm-ng-0.6

debian4R2Base:~/bwm-ng-0.6# ./configure

debian4R2Base:~/bwm-ng-0.6# make && make install

You have to install “libstatgrab”, if you choose to use it

debian4R2Base:~/bwm-ng-0.6# aptitude install libstatgrab6

That completes the installation.

In debian, if you want to use the aptitude package manager to install then you need to install from the unstable source http://packages.debian.org/unstable/net/bwm-ng as this contains the latest version with disk I/O support.

If disk I/O is not required then can install bwm-ng 0.5 from the stable sources

debian4R2Base:~/bwm-ng-0.6# aptitude install bwm-ng

Once installed simply running “bwm-ng” will default to Network stats on all interfaces. You can use bwm-ng for all options.

For stats on all network Interfaces

debian4R2Base:~/bwm-ng-0.6# bwm-ng

For stats on Select Network Interface

debian4R2Base:~/bwm-ng-0.6# bwm-ng -I eth0

where eth0 is the network interface

For stats on Disk I/O

debian4R2Base:~/bwm-ng-0.6# bwm-ng -i disk

(Reads from /proc/diskstat)

In Windows, simply download, unzip the file and run the EXE file. For more information, visit the homepage here

DarkStat is a simple nTop like Packet Sniffing Network Traffic/Bandwidth monitoring utility for your Linux/Unix. DarkStat relies on libpcap and presents simple webinterface with nice graphs and stats aut-refreshed. The main advantage of Darkstat is that of the footprint and the memory, CPU usage.

DarkStat can run on most of the UNIX, Linux, FreeBSD,OpenBSD,NetBSD,Solaris,Mac OS. There are also packages for Gentoo Opensuse and Debian

Installation is fairly straight forward and no configuration is required. Rather if required you can play around. DarkStat also has a nice Man page.

DarkStat runs in the background of many Cable/DSL routers and are used in pfSense, redWall opensource firewalls.

Lets install DarkStat in Debian here

As always, install the pre-requisites

Install ZLib

debian4R2Base:~/darkstat-3.0.707# aptitude install zlib1g-dev

Install libpcap

debian4R2Base:~/darkstat-3.0.707# aptitude install libpcap-dev

That’s it lets get installing DarkStat

If you choose to install from the Debian Packages then it is as simple as using the aptitude utility

Install DarkStat as Debian package

debian4R2Base:~/darkstat-3.0.707# aptitude install darkstat

Install from Source

If you want to install from source then here we are

Download from here

debian4R2Base:~# http://dmr.ath.cx/net/darkstat/darkstat-3.0.707.tar.bz2

Unzip and Untar

debian4R2Base:~/# tar -jxvf darkstat-3.0.707.tar.bz2

Compile and Install

debian4R2Base:~/# cd darkstat-3.0.707

debian4R2Base:~/darkstat-3.0.707# ./configure

Sometime throws error so run with the “–with-chroot-dir” arguement

debian4R2Base:~/darkstat-3.0.707# ./configure –with-chroot-dir

debian4R2Base:~/darkstat-3.0.707# make && make install

That completes the installation.

To start DarkStat

debian4R2Base:~/darkstat-3.0.707# darkstat -i eth0

where “eth0″ is the interface that you monitor traffic coming in and going out. Change it as in your system.

Now, darkstat starts and sniffs in the background and loads a simple web interface at http://localhost:666 or if you are browsing from a different machine then http://<IP Address>:666 (example: http://192.168.19.131:666)

Once in, no explanation needed all depicted in simple easy graphs showing almost realtime info and historical. So with the hosts and ports. Great tool no wonder used in Cable/DSl routers and in well known OpenSource Firewalls. Well Done!!!

B. Dijkstra at SQWEEK.com has written a simple PHP web frontend for vnStat. The latest stable version is 1.4.1 and is available for download here

vnStat PHP Frontend requires

Apache Webserver (use Apache2.2.3 here)

PHP (use PHP5.2.0-8)

GD Image librariesvnStat already installed

So lets get the prerequisites install.

Install PHP5

DebianSystem# aptitude install php5

Install GD Image Libraries

DebianSystem# aptitude install php5-gd

Install Apache2 Webserver

DebianSystem# aptitude install apache2

Now, the pre-requisites are installed. You need to have a functional vnStat running on the system. For install instructions click here

Download vnStat PHP Frontend

Download the vnStat PHP Frontend from here

DebianSystem# wget http://www.sqweek.com/sqweek/files/vnstat_php_frontend-1.4.1.tar.gz

Unzip & Untar the files

DebianSystem# tar -zxvf vnstat_php_frontend-1.4.1.tar.gz

Move the files to Apache Webserver Root

DebianSystem# mv vnstat_php_frontend-1.4.1 /var/www/vnstat

Edit Config file for the Interfaces

DebianSystem# vi config.php

Look for

$iface_list = array(‘eth0′);

and

$iface_title['eth0'] = ‘Internal’;
//$iface_title['eth1'] = ‘Internet’;
//$iface_title['sixxs'] = ‘SixXS IPv6′;

and alter it to your systems requirement acfordingly (say change name of interfaces or add multiple interfaces)

Example

$iface_list = array(‘eth0′ , ‘eth1′);

Now, that all is done, simply access the site and you can see the vnStat stats with graphs that you would otherwise see only in console.

If there was no errors, copy src/vnstat to some directory included in $PATH variable(say ~/bin/) and create the database directory.

DebianSystem# cp src/vnstat ~/bin/
DebianSystem# cp cfg/vnstat.conf ~/.vnstatrc
DebianSystem# mkdir ~/.vnstat

Test Kernel compatibility

DebianSystem# vnstat –testkernel

Edit Config file & Add Database Directory

DebianSystem# vi ~/.vnstatrc

Locate

DatabaseDir “/var/lib/vnstat”

and replace with

DatabaseDir “/pathtoyourhomedir/.vnstat”

and save the file.

Next every interface that should be monitored needs to be added to vnStat. This creates a database for each of the interface.

DebianSystem# vnstat -u -i eth0

where eth0 is the interface name. Change it to the interface on your system.

CRON Job
Add a crontab job entry for vnStat.

DebianSystem# crontab -e

and add the following line

*/5 * * * * ~/bin/vnstat -u

Allow it to collect enough traffic information after which run vnstat

DebianSystem# vnstat

Also, in any case you can check the config file ~/.vnstatrc for interface and other settings.

vnStat is a free OpenSource (GPL License) network traffic monitor for Linux that keeps a log of daily network traffic for the selected interface(s) on the system. Unlike other Network Traffic monitors, vnStat analyzes the traffic information from the /proc filesystem. And, vnStat can be used even without root permissions.

vnStat maintains a database for every interface for which the network traffic analysed. We can watch the live Traffic status on the selected interface(s) or run reports on Hourly, Daily, Weekly and Monthly bandwidth statics for the selected network interfaces.

To install vnStat, all you need is the required C compiler installed.

Here I install vnStat on a Debian 4.0R2 system

Download vnStat

Download the vnStat from here

DebianSystem# wget http://humdi.net/vnstat/vnstat-1.6.tar.gz

Unzip & Untar the downloaded the file

DebianSystem# tar -zxvf vnstat-1.6.tar.gz

Install C Compilers

Ensure that the required C compilers are installed in the system. In debian to install the required packages to compile

DebianSystem# aptitude install build-essentials

ChangeDirectory & Install

DebianSystem# cd vnstat-1.6

DebianSystem:/vnstat-1.6# make

DebianSystem:/vnstat-1.6# make all

That installs the vnStat Bandwidth monitoring software.

Test the Kernel

DebianSystem# vnstat –testkernel

Create Interface Database

Run the following to create a database for each of the interfaces that you would want to monitor traffic bandwidth on.

DebianSystem# vnu -u -i eth0

This creates a database for the interface eth0

Now, give it a few minutes to collect enough data to provide useful statistics.

To show the summary simply type vnstat

DebianSystem# vnstat

Just came across this great Firefox Browser addon, Nagios Checker 0.11 for Nagios Network Monitoring system alerts. This is a great simple addon that shows any alarms on your nagios monitoring system simply on the browser status bar providing the need not to logon to Nagios web interface. The extension loads up in the status bar and alarms you of any network events. What I liked in the extension is that it is absolutely non-intrusive. Sits on the bottom right corner of the browser status bar and highlights any alarm. When you move your mouse over it, it displays the alarm in detail.

Once installed, restart the browser. This should load the extension on the status bar. Right-click and select Settings. As a first step, Add a new Nagios Monitoring Server and its access username and password. This allows the extension to obtain status update from Nagios.

Nagios Checker 0.11 can work on Firefox 1.x & 2.x version of the browser and can support nagios 1.x & Nagios 2.x

It provides a quite a lot of features including

Filtering the output on the Extension window

Output Display Properties

Sound Alerts when an alarm appears

Extension behaviour control and status.cgi update interval

Centreon, previously Oreon-Project is network, system and application monitoring system modelled on the best ever opensource monitoring solution, Nagios. Centreon provides a new frontend and new functionnalities to Nagios.

It allows you to be more efficient in your network monitoring, but also allows you to make your supervision information readable by a largest range of users. Indeed, a non technical user can now use the Centreon/Nagios couple to easily understand your network infrastructure thanks to charts and graphical representations of the gathered information. Skilled users still have access to specific and technical information collected by Nagios though.
