Every year television icon MTV gather a host industry professional, and challenge them identifies the “Top Ten Hottest MC’s in game”. The criteria for the Hottest MC list is pretty fair; the artist are graded by buzz, impact, lyrics, swag, and numbers. Each year this list seems to become more controversial, and political than the year before, and this year’s list was no different.

The list goes as follows:

10) Wale

Wale came in 10^th, but really if you ask me Wale should’ve been ranked higher. Wale has definitely pays his dues within the industry; his lyrical ability is better than some of the notables on this list. Hopefully Wale will be placed higher on next years list.

9) Wiz Khalifa

Wiz has been tearing up the charts, and staying relevant with hot mix tapes, clever collaborations. Initially, Wiz was named the 8^th Hottest MC in the game, but after a heated roundtable argument Wiz was bumped down to 9^th. Disappointing!

8) Big Sean

Much like half of the artist on this list Big Sean made his debut on his Top Ten debut. Sean’s albums sales were substantive, his fan-base was broad, his lyrics were nice, and style was original. Although I had Sean 10^th on my list, I can live with him being 8^th.

7) Meek Mill

Has had a great year! He has been relevant from start to finish, and is arguably as responsible for Mabach Music Group (MMG) relevance as it boss Rick Ross. After releasing Ima Boss, and Tupac Back on the Self Made Vol 1 Album, Meek released the Dreamchasers mix tape; collaborated with some big names in the industry, and went on to sign a deal with Ecko Clothing to launch his own line Dreamchasers. Meek Mill earned my respect this year and he’s well deserving of the number 7 spot.

6) Jay Z

Let the controversy begin. Many members of the MTV brain trust had questions about Jay Z’s place on this list. In fact, I had major questions about Jay Z place on the list. Outside of his Watch The Throne contributions, Jay did nothing to qualify for this years list, but my opinion means nothing.

5) Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is another member on this list that has had an awesome year. After his release from jail Wayne released “Six Foot Seven Foot” as the lead single for the Carter IV, and mix tape Sorry 4 The Wait. Wayne’s year was so good that two of the top four artist on the list are his understudies. The braintrust had a interesting debate about who should be deem the fourth and fifth hottest mc.

4) Nikki Minaj

Quickly went from being Lil Wayne protégé, to Hip Hop’s brightest Barbie. Nikki’s Pink Friday album reached platinum status, within a couple of weeks. This is great for any MC, let alone a female. Her intriguing style, charismatic lyrics, and marketability her supplanted her as a force to be reckoned with.

3) Kanye West

Here’s another case of an artist being raked to high on this list, however I can live with Kanye West positions. After releasing the platinum LP “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. Kanye Collaborated with his big brother Jay Z to release one of the most anticipated albums of the year” Watch The Throne. Kanye’s beats, controversial verses, and fashion sense won over the brain trust.

2) Drake

Although he didn’t release his sophomore LP until the fourth quarter, Drake dominated the previous three quarters with memorable collaborations. Drakes blend between hot lyrics, and melodic notes has made him a household name. In fact, his blend may ultimately be his downfall. Several brain trust members didn’t give Drake the number one spot, because his singing has a tendency outshine his lyrics. Nevertheless, Drake has compiled an impression resume, and I look forward to hearing from him in the future.

1) Rick Ross

Despite having a pair of freighting seizures, Rick Ross the Boss had an incredible year. His MMG album did well, signees Wale; and Meek Mill top the charts, and his “God Forgives I Don’t mix tape” took the streets by storm. Rick Ross definitely deserves all the praise he’s receiving, his hard work is paying off.

To conclude, MTV’s highly anticipated Hottest MC list comes up short again. Yes, I’m pleased with most of the artist on the list, however it could have better. Am I the only one that noticed that nine out of the ten artists on this list are affiliates of each other? Wiz Khalifa is the only artist on this list that’s isn’t directly affiliated with MMG, YMCMB, or G.O.O.D Music/Roc Nation. I hope next years list is better, the fans deserve more.

Why is it our most talented artist, become our most troubled? Is there a correlation between great talents, and drugs? I know, it’s a harsh question to ask, but reality begs to differ. Truth is, the great talents of our day had troubling vices that ultimately ended their illustrious career. Judy Garland, Robert Earl Davis Jr. Jimmy Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Phyllis Hyman, Michael Jackson, Elvis Pressley, Robert Quince, Jon Richie, David Ruffin, Ike Turner, Kurt Cobain, DJ Screw, Pimp C, Amy Winehouse, and most recently Whitney Houston. Drugs use slowed the profound career of Whitney Houston, and although the cause of death is unknown many believe that drugs contributed.

Houston stemmed from a soul singing family, her mother Cissy Houston, cousin Dionne and Dee Dee Warrick, and Godmother Aretha Franklin. Whitney’s vocal inflections grasp the world like none before her. Her powerful voice recorded seven studio albums, and three gracious movie soundtracks. Houston’s eclipse gold, platinum, multi-platinum, or diamond on all of her musical LP’s. Houston’s resume shows that she was a highly celebrated artist, selling over 170 million records, and winning 415,out of 562 awards throughout her career. In fact Guinness Book of World Records deemed her the most award winning female of all time; below are her most notable awards:

Houston was the first woman to win BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award. After receiving the award Houston expressed her joy by saying: It’s a wonderful marvelous feeling to be looked at, and not judged. Judge not for your flaws, but for your triumphs “Whitney Houston”. In addition, to winning numerous awards Houston’s rendition of the Star Spangled Banner” has been deemed by the NFL as one the greatest 25 moments in NFL history. Houston rendition was the first National Anthem to be turned into a chart-topping hit twice.

Besides being a talented artist, and actor she did philanthropy work. Donating the proceeds from second release of the Star Spangled Banner to the American Red Cross. In 1989 she formed the “Whitney Houston Foundation for Children”. She raised over $1 million for charities at Nelson Mandela 70^th birthday party, and she donated funds for her concert in South Africa to various charities in the country. In addition, East Orange New Jerseys, the Franklin School was renamed Whitney E. Houston Creative Academy.

At 3:55 pm Whitney Houston was pronounced dead by the Los Angeles police department, at the Beverly Hills Hilton. Houston’s passing gloomed Grammy weekend by striking those who gathered for the prestigious event. Probably none bigger than Clive Davis, whose famous pre Grammy party brought Houston to the Los Angeles Hotel. Reportedly Whitney Houston had just finish shooting “Sparkle” the 1976 movie that Houston acquired the rights to. According to Steven Zetichek:

“The original "Sparkle" told the story of the Williams sisters, a trio of 1950s-era Harlem singers whose stories were loosely inspired by the Supremes. Headed by Lonette McKee's Sister, the group also features Sister's sister Sparkle (Cara), Dolores (Dawn Smith) and several friends. As they begin to find success, though, Sister's life spirals out of control, with drug addiction eventually leading to her death”.

The saddest thing about Whitney’s death is that the drug facid of her life, is what people will most people will remember her for. Cunning, baffling, and powerful or what drugs become to its abusers. Drugs wait and do pushups with and your shortcomings, by strengthening its hold with every use. Drugs are the only condition you have to convince people that they have, and we often run to our stimulate vices when things go array, or to celebrate success without considering its harm. Drug addiction is the only real problem that presents itself as a solution, when its actually adds to your problem. Prescription drugs were found in Houston’s room, and are to believe to be the catalyst of her death.

I spent my Saturday afternoon in awe as CNN, and other networks covered Houston tragedy. I watched my mother hold back tears as she watched her favorite Whitney Houston’s videos on MTV, we sang, we remember, we mourned.

Drugs are the only condition you have to convinced people that they have. My favorite line, from my favorite Whitney song: If I should stay, I’ll only be in your way. So I’ll go but I know that I will think of you every step of the way. “ I will always love you”.

The Value of a Business Plan from an Expert Standpoint

When I enrolled at Full Sail University last year, I couldn’t wait to embark upon the wealth of knowledge the program had to offer. Once the program began; I anticipated the context of the Business Plan Development course, however my anticipation did me no justice. Nothing I envisioned, prepared me for the capacity in which this course was taught. To professor Koch’s credit, I had factored his insight into my planning, and I look forward to seeing it come onto fruition.

Before BPD began, I thought the most important sections of a business plan were the Company Description, Financials, and Contingency plan. However, a host of industry experts beg to differ; Dave Lavinsky founder of Growthink.com believes that the key components of a business plan are the executive Summary, Company Analysis, Industry Analysis, Analysis of Customers and Competition, and Marketing Plan. Mark Zwilling CEO and founder of Startup Professionals, Inc. believes that the most important part of a business plan is ones Executive Summary.

According to bpexpertviews.blogspot.com Zwilling says some investors will not look at a plan that does not contain the Executive Summary. If you really don’t know what your plans are, you cannot effectively convey them to potential partners and investors. As an investor, Nic mentions the parts of the business plan that he looks at when deciding whether to go for that first meeting:

In my opinion an entrepreneur, and a stunt man are one in the same. Both are expert risk takers, and both are held accountable for their successes, or failures. With that being said; don’t assist a potential investor in telling you no: make sure you have covered every aspect of the plan. Business plans are thought to be an illustration of ones visions, a guide to entrepreneurial success, and a persuasive calling card for potential lenders, and investors. For those who inherited businesses, or started them based on sheer talent and substantial experience, please proceed with caution. Operating a business without a business plan may work momentarily, but if the business owner is looking for long-term growth a business plan is needed. In fact, Oprah Winfrey and Mark Cuban stand by it.

Oprah Winfrey, and Mark Cuban are considered to be tycoons in the world of business. Each has attained a great deal of success in their respective industries, Oprah dominated the talk show arena, and Mark Cuban conquered everything from software to basketball. Although, they are totally different in personality they share one commonality and that understands the value of a business plan. Oprah views on business plans echo’s the teaching of many business professors and programs everywhere.

According to Brewster Oprah states “writing a business plan will force you to consider the what-ifs and tiny costs you might overlook”. Business plans will allow an entrepreneur to see exactly what he, or she will need to do to turn a profit in the respective industry. Mark Cuban is a big believer in helping entrepreneurs achieve success by investing in profitable business plans. During the economic decline in 2009 Mark Cuban proclaimed that he would start his own stimulus plan on his personal blog (www.blogmaverick.com ).

In an effort to boost the economy he urged business owners to post their business plan on his site, and let aspiring entrepreneurs to replicate it. Cuban stated, “if it’s a good idea and worth funding, we want it replicated elsewhere. The idea is not just to help you, but to figure out how to help the economy through hard work and ingenuity.” (Cuban, 2009) On the show Shark Tank Mark displays a high level of charisma, and aggression when he’s dealing with entrepreneurs. Mark knows how to make money, and he does not mind investing in others that know how. The critical and key components these two business tycoons are looking for are consistency, and profitability. A well thought-out plan can lead to a bevy of profits.

Wow! I just took at look at the latest Hip-Hop, and R&B Billboard chart, and to my surprise, Good Music/Roc Nation and Cash Money/Young Money dominated numbers 1 – 10. When I say dominated, I mean dominated!

1) Jay Z/Kanye West – Ni**as In Paris

2) Beyoncé ft. Andre 3000 - Party

3) Wale ft. Miguel – Lotus Flower Bomb

4) Big Sean ft. Nicki Minaj – Dance (A$$)

5) Lil Wayne ft. Drake – She Will

6) Drake – Headlines

7) Wale ft. Jeremiah & Rick Ross- That Way

8) Drake ft. Nicki Minaj- Make Me Proud

9) T – Pain ft. Wiz Khalifa & Lily Allen – 5 O’clock

In addition, the two conglomerates held position 11, 12, 13, 14, and 19.

Cash Money/Young Money Lil Wayne Carter IV installment recently went double platinum according to the RIAA. Wayne released the Carter IV three months on August 29^th,and since its release the Carter IV has become the highest selling rap album, and the highest selling album by a male since 2008. In fact, Wayne was the last male rapper to eclipse this plateau with his Carter III album in 2008. Granted Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake, T.I., and Ludacris have all recorded platinum albums in the last three years, but none of them have outsold Wayne. In addition, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” LP, was the only LP that outsold the Carter IV.

Cash Money/ Young Money affiliates; Drake, Nikki Manij, T-Pain, DJ Khaled, and Rick Ross have all enjoyed recent success in the rap game. In fact they are all platinum-selling artist. DJ Khaled recently received a Triple platinum plaque for his LP “I’m on One”, which is significant because DJ Khaled is just that; a DJ! It seems like every album they drop, and every single they release does extremely well despite the music industries hard ships.

Good Music/Roc Nation is doing extremely well. Jay Z and Kanye West “Watch the Throne LP is certified platinum. Beyoncé’s “4” album went platinum, Rhianna is all over the air way, and J. Cole is close to going Gold. Big Sean has sold a sufficient amount of records, Pusha T is killing the mix tape game; Willow Smith, Melanie Fiona, Common, and Kid Cuddi are set to release. In addition to having superstar line-up, Jay Z has an absurd deal with Live Nation the live entertainment and eCommerce company.

I find it absolutely amazing that over 90% of the music being played on Hip-Hop/ R&B stations comes from these conglomerates. They are ahead in downloads, album sales, and singles. Is it Money, is it the name, or are they making Good Music/Roc Nation and Young Money/Cash Money are setting the standard rather we like it or not

When I say Mannie you say Fresh! Mannie Fresh! Mannie Fresh! When I say Mannie you say Fresh; Mannie Fresh! Mannie Fresh! Mannie Fresh is and always will be considered a Super Producer by those who truly know, and appreciate his work. Born Byron O. Thomas and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana; Fresh was introduced to music by his father at a very young age. During his adolescent days Fresh began accompanying his father who was a neighborhood DJay, at local clubs, and house parties. Fresh was amazed by the response his father received when he played, and was inspired to do the same. In a interview with Slava Kuperstein Fresh stated

"My Christmas gifts used to be instruments," explained Fresh. "I was like,

'Okay, my friend got a bike. Why did I get a turntable?' Or somebody got an.

Atari game. I got a trumpet. I was just like, 'Okay, this stuff is just starting

to stack up.' [Laughs] My dad must've seen something in me. I would say

somewhere around twelve is when I took an interest in it. Like, you know

what? I'm just gonna go through my pile of what I thought was junk at the

time: my keyboard, my drum machine, horns and all that, and start fiddling

around with it”.

Fresh is most commonly known for his stint with Cash Money Records, in fact Fresh help catapult Cash Money into a major conglomerate. From 1993 – 20005 Fresh produced a plethora of music for CMR, but abruptly left the conglomerate when he and the label heads began to dispute over royalties. Fresh’s departure from Cash Money was immediately felt by Hip Hop world, in fact its been rumored that his departure hurt the sell of Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter II” album. After leaving Cash Money Mannie Fresh signed with Def Jam South and started his own label Chubby Boy Records.

Mannie Fresh is, and will always be one of my favorite producers. I grew up on his work, I know his tracks when I hear them, and I would love to work with him in the near future. Mannie Fresh is a great inspiration for anyone looking to be successful in the music industry. What does the name Mannie Fresh mean to me? It means Cash Money, it means amazing drum patterns, it means greatness!

Last year reports surfaced that New York Jets coaches, and football player’s hounded sports journalist Ines Sainz during, a practice session. Sainz who finished 33^rd in the Miss Universes pageant in 1997 is noted as being one of the sexiest sport reporters in the world. Sainz who is more known for her looks than her work said

she ignored the player’s antics, and focused on her job. Her goal was to interview Jets Quarterback Mark Sanchez and that’s what she did. The jets were accused of catcalling, whistling, gawking, and intentionally metaling Sainz.

Sainz, who has pictures and videos all over the web that captures her poising in the most intimate form, claims that she did not file the sexual harassment report against the Jets. In fact, it’s been noted that other reporters in the facility filed the report with the AWSM sparking a major uproar between reporters, and athletes. Some will argue that the AWSM took action, because their worried about the safety of their women. They have fought hard for their respect in a male dominated field, and a worried that their women may be judged by their appearance, and not their accomplishments. Others may argue that AWSM are overreacting. Sainz stated

“A group of news people and communicators, eager to make an even bigger scandal out of this situation, have moved women’s rights backwards at least 50 years,” Sainz added. “I am surprised by how easily some colleagues skip the basic rules of journalism: one should investigate, inquire, and look at the facts before giving an opinion.”

Sainz colleagues frowned upon her belief that AWSM blew this situation out of proportion, most believe that she loved the attention she was given. Caroline Howard asks “Did Sainz cross a professional line by positioning and marketing herself as babe-sports-reporter. “I am very well known for my image,” Sainz says. “I am not pretending to be provocative, only to be attractive. “This unfortunate situation forced the media to revisit the labor rights that once hindered women in this arena.

Should female reporters be allowed into the NFL locker rooms after games/practices? Clinton Portis a former running back for the Washington Redskins stated

"I think you put women reporters in the locker room in position to see guys walking around naked, and you sit in the locker room with 53 guys, and all of the sudden you see a nice woman in the locker room. I think men are going to tend to turn and look and want to say something to that woman," Portis said in his weekly appearance on 106.7 The Fan.”

As a former football player, I know what goes on behind the walls of a locker room. Granted no one in the locker room is thinking about sex, especially if the game was lost; however if a beautiful woman enters the locker room someone is bound to say, look, or think something provocative. Moreover, I firmly believe that male reporters entering a WNBA locker room have to check their loins at the door to maintain their professionalism. Please do not confuse my opinionated rap with sexism, for I ‘am simply trying to convey the thoughts of an educated jock.

The Agony at Penn

Last week if one were to ask me what is the biggest recent controversy regarding employment law, unions, or torts. I would empathically utter the NBA lockout, however the Penn State controversy has stolen the crown. When the news first broke the story I immediately thought about the victims, their families, and their mindsets now that the secret is out. Next I thought about the sick individual that committed such a horrendous crime, and the mindset of his family. Thirdly, I thought about the most winningest coach in college football Joe Paterno.

The victims in the Penn State scandal are the most important pieces in this puzzle, their livelihood, state of mind, and privacy have all been disturbed by this instance. Happy Valley was not a happy place at all Saturday morning; in fact it was a rather somber moment for both Nebraska and Penn State. According to Joe Juliano, Mike Jensen, and Kristen A. Graham “ More than 100 former Penn State players gathered to support the team, which kneeled with the Nebraska squad at midfield before kickoff. Nebraska assistant coach Ron Brown led the teams in prayer”.

One has to wonder if the victims will have sexuality problems, as they grow older. At that age a child’s mindset can easily be tainted placing them into a sea of confusion, especially when it concerns their sexuality. Grammy Award winning Gospel singer Donnie McClurkin openly admitted that he was molested as a child, and struggled with his sexuality. McClurkin also stated “ God gave him the wherewithal to get out of that and find out who I really am”. Lets be clear; there is no ill will towards the gay community for everyone has the right to choose, and the right to choose is the concerning factor in this case. One can only pray for those kids, and hope they want be scared to live their lives.

Jerry Sandusky, Jerry Sandusky, Jerry Sandusky. Jerry Sandusky can easily go from the heir to the Penn State throne, and the founder of the Second Mile foundation to spending the rest of his life behind bars. Sandusky is currently facing 40 counts of sexual abuse, which carries a maximum sentence of life. Sandusky used his trusted foundation, and volunteer missions at local schools to attract young boys. Some victims claimed that Sandusky showered them with gifts, invited them for sleepovers, and took advantage of his times with the youngsters. Sandusky has brought shame to Happy Valley, and placed Penn State in a pool of scorn.

“Penn State Athletic Director Timothy Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz have been charged for failing to report the abuse to authorities and misleading investigators. Prosecutors determined that a legal duty to report the alleged abuse applied to them, but not to McQueary and Paterno”(CNN Wire Staff).

Despites the anger, anguish, and unwanted attention Penn State is receiving, they may be facing some employment law issues. Its been argued that Joe Paterno, Graham B. Spanier, and Mike McQuery were wrongfully terminated, because neither were charged for their actions. In fact, they lost their jobs because they told their bosses about the problem, and not the authorities. These guys were fired for having a lapse in moral responsibility, even though they followed the chain of command. Wow! Everyone with a job has been told by their employer to report any issues they know of to management so they would not be held liable. However, passing the buck in this situation came back to hunt them. I understand where why some may say they should have reported the issues to the authorities, but according to the employment law they did nothing wrong. On the other hand I will say that Paterno’s loyalty to his friend did not help his stance nor did it show good judgment. Lastly, the head officials at Penn State that were fired for overlooking this matter were trying to protect the bottom line of the school. Reporting the matter could have possibly cost Penn State millions of dollars in fundraisers, and booster donations, and endorsements. “Managers and executives face situations daily where cutting a corner or a little “white lie” could mean a big difference in the bottom line. You can’t succumb to that temptation and let the money dictate your actions”.

WHO DAT; WE DAT

In 2009 the Sports world stood in awe as the New Orleans Saints made a magical run to the Super Bowl. The Who Dat nation, which generally consist of the Mississippi Gulf Coast region has grown accustomed to seeing, and saying the phrase “Who Dat”! In Louisiana the phrase “Who Dat” is second nature to all. People are taught from infantry how to say it, babies are often draped in Saints “Who Dat” apparel, and the local daycare is bound to have “Who Dat” toys. In other words, “Who Dat” is much apart of our culture as Mardi Gras.

In 2010 the NFL attempted to claim exclusive ownership of the term “Who Dat”, stating that they own its trademark rights. Shortly thereafter the NFL began demanding local storeowners, and vendors to stop ordering, printing, and selling unauthorized “Who Dat” apparel. According to NFL spokesman Dan Masonson, "Any unauthorized use of the Saints colors and other [marks] designed to create the illusion of an affiliation with the Saints is equally a violation of the Saints trademark rights because it allows a third party to 'free ride' by profiting from confusion of the team's fans, who want to show support for the Saints."

The “Who Dat” controversies did more then spark uproar between the fans and the NFL. It actually brought two rival politicians who never agree on anything, together for one common purpose. Sen. David Vitter and Rep. Charlie Melancon challenged the NFL to drop its claim on the term “Who Dat”. Melancon launched an online petition for Saints fans to express discontentment with the NFL, while Vitter wrote a challenging letter to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. According to The Times Picayune some of Vitters letter went as follows;

“Dear Commissioner Goodell:

I was stunned to learn recently that the NFL is taking the position that it owns the exclusive trademark of the term "Who Dat" and has even threatened legal action against some mom-and-pop merchants selling t-shirts using the term. I would urge you to drop this obnoxious and legally unsustainable position and instead agree that "Who Dat" is in the public domain, giving no one exclusive trademark rights.

This letter will also serve as formal legal notice that I am having t-shirts printed that say "WHO DAT say we can't print Who Dat!" for widespread sale in commerce. Please either drop your present ridiculous position or sue me (The Times-Picayune, 2010).”

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal was also urged to get involved in the “Who Dat’ squabble. After the congressman took action against the NFL, the Louisiana Democratic State Central Committee asked Bobby Jindal to defend the rights of people. After being demanding to do something Jindal ordered state lawyers to seek a lawsuit against the league over the phrase.

As a Saints fan I was appalled by the NFL trying to profit off the “Who Dat” nation after all these years. 43 long NFL season went by without one inclination that “Who Dat” belong to no one, but the loyalist of the Saints. This story reminds me of the deadbeat dad whose child has grown up to have grave success in a professional league, and suddenly reemerges from the dead to try and profit off his kid. Can you say greed; I can!

The term “Who Dat” is said to have derived from many places like, The Menstrual Show, St. Augustine Catholic School, Sal and Steve Monistere, LSU, Southern University etc. Fact is it didn’t derive from the offices of the NFL. Since the commotion began spiraling out of control the NFL backed off its claim, and stated that the whole thing was a misunderstanding. Yeah Right! Who Dat, We Dat! Go Saints!!!

The NBA, its players, and their Lockout!!!

In a perfect world, professional organizations like the NBA, NHL, and NFL never have labor issues. However, reality has proven that these billion dollar industries have more issues than their fans can fathom. Recently, the fans and sponsors of these billion dollars industries watched their beloved sport bicker about money. Unfortunately, most of us that work a nine-to-five don’t understand how millionaires, fuss with other millionaires about millions. However, we should! Why you ask? Because we hundred and thousandaires, fuss with other hundred and thousandairesaires, about hundreds and thousands regularly.

As an employee I understand how the players feel, they want their pay to match their work. As a business owner I also understand how the owners feel, they want their employees effort to match their pay. As a sponsor I understand their desire to have their needs met, and I also know that if no games are being played no money is being made. Sponsors want to see a return on their investment as quickly as possible, be it monetary or exposure. Unfortunately, for those entities that sponsor NBA teams, or the league in general are quickly awaiting the end of the lockout.

Currently the NBA lockout is affecting the game like never before. David Stern and the NBA owners never had to worry about competing with the foreign leagues for players, especially American players. Today, Stern, and team owners find themselves competing with foreign leagues for their players on a daily basis. Players are entertaining offers to play across seas, because of the uncertainty of the NBA season. Granted majority of the players will still get paid during the lockout because of their contract structure, but they want be playing the game they love. In fact, those players that join foreign leagues will be earning a game check from their new team, as well as their NBA check. This works well for the player, but its awful for the sponsor.

Some teams like the New Orleans Hornets, and the Charlotte Bobcats are have been reassured by their sponsors that they are not going anywhere. According to Joe Gerrity; Entergy and Chevron have both recently raised their sponsorship level to become Crescent City Champions, which is widely recognized (although never officially confirmed) as reserved for companies which contribute 1,000,000 or more annually. The commitment from Entergy and Chevron are both an increase of more than 50 percent of their previous levels. Sponsors are patiently awaiting the end of the lockout so they can get back to life as normal. The Hornets are fortunate to have such loyal sponsors, I only hope other NBA teams are as fortunate.

DirectTV & The NFL; The Win-Win

Since the emergence of Direct TV, there has been plethora of advertisement for NFL Sunday ticket. In fact, NFL Sunday ticket is arguably Direct TV’s biggest income earner. When most conglomerates like Anheuser-Bush, Coca Cola, and Pepsi blitz viewers with a host of clever commercials for the Super Bowl. Direct TV blitzes viewers at the beginning of the season, letting them know that they can watch every local game that’s out of their viewing area. DirecTV, Sunday's NFL opener is one of its most important days of the year to reach and interest new customers in its NFL Sunday Ticket package, where viewers can see every NFL game, every Sunday. Entities have been using celebrities to advertise for a very long time, and with the growing number of celebrity advertisements on the air; its fair to say that it’s a successful practice.

Direct TV is currently advertising its service, and their different delivery mediums with one of the games greatest players Deion “Prime Time” Sanders. These humorous commercial are one of the few commercials that actually keeps my attention. Okay I admit, my feelings towards these commercials are basis, because I’m probably the biggest Deion Sanders fan none to man. Growing up I idolized Deion because he single handily, revolutionized the corner back position. Today, I’m laughing at Deion; because he is single handily the funniest fairy ever.

Known for his flash, flare, and over confident posture. Prime as I call him is perfect is for this commercial, however his fairy suit is still in question. The win-win factor is definitely inevitable in this situation. The NFL is winning, because games that would not normally be seen by fans across the country are getting airtime. DirectTV is winning because they are making it possible for fans to view the game of their choice. In fact, they have also made it easier, by allowing the fans to watch the games on their mobile phone, and computer. They have also worked out a deal with big cable conglomerates like Cox; to bring NFL Red Zone channel to every fan that wants to watch all the games, but cannot because they have cable. The fans are winning, because they have access to every game, every score, everywhere.

DirectTV is well on its way to witnessing its highest subscriptions yet. With the additions of DirectTV mobile, DiretcTV 2PC, and NFL Red Zone they are quickly becoming the NFL’s biggest carrier. Personally, I do not have DirectTV; but I do have the NFL Red Zone channel. Today I was able to see almost every game played around the league; this convenience allows me to keep track of my fantasy players and watch score around the league. Thanks to Deion’s clever commercial I will subscribe to DirectTV 2PC, and DirectTV mobile.

NCAA Concerned About Broadcastings

The NCAA has recently considered changing the landscape in which certain High Schools, and University dwell. They orchestrated a meeting, specifically for High School, and University teams that share broadcast with one another. Of course; like everything else that surrounds the world of sports, broadcasting on the same network can compromise NCAA bylaws. Conferences and schools that have their own network, like the Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West Conference, and the University of Texas at Austin have received invitations to this summit. The National Federation of State High School Associations, and experts alike have also been invited to participate in the summit.

NCAA vice president of academics and membership affairs Kevin Lennon, stated; This event is a continuation of the ongoing dialogue and review we have been engaged in with our members as they have created conference-and institutional-branded networks”. Lennon also stated; Current network arrangements differ significantly in many ways, including issues of ownership and control, and we are committed to engaging in a comprehensive review to ensure that all member institutions are treated appropriately.”

to growing will help the involved parties on every level.

The content in which the Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West, and UT, operate, caught the NCAA off guard. They did not account for new network creations between the listed parties, and conglomerates like Fox and ESPN. The NCAA wants to get a firm grip on these broadcastings issues, before every conference or school with influence have its own broadcast. According to the NCAA the topics discussed at this summit include "the use of and interaction with high school or other personnel for broadcasting or advertising" and how institutional TV networks might impact NCAA bylaws.

In my opinion, the NCAA should leave this matter alone. These networks are only capitalizing one what national conglomerate ESPN has been capitalizing on for years. The Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West Conference, and the University of Texas are providing select High School Associations as well as their stakeholders (Student Athletes) with a platform to showcase their talents to the masses. I believe the High School Associations are setting their stakeholders up for success by showcasing in an environment conducive for growth.

The biggest sports business conflict in the last 5 years has to be the NFL lockout. The NFL and its owner’s violated antitrust laws, by locking out the players In fact, the magnitude of matter forced the NFL Players Union to decertify, and players were on the verge of becoming their own independent servicer getting the best deal possible. The owner’s arrogance almost cost them more than what they bargained for. I know CBA’s, and lockouts have become a reoccurring theme in the world of sports, but one cannot overlook the corporal behind the madness. Money!

Money is the motor that powers professional sports. For instance: The NFL is quickly becoming America’s favorite pastime, and it’s showing on every owners bottom-line. However, the owners where not content with their percentage of the $9.4 billion a year industry. Washington Post Sally Jenkins reported: they opted out of the CBA and demanded $1 billion in concessions from players. They tore up their cloak because, they said, their share of $9.4 billion in revenue wasn’t enough to support them in the style to which they’ve become accustomed.

Greed and arrogance made the owners feel as though they could steer things in their favor, because of their stature, and affiliation. The owners subconsciously put themselves into an unwarranted legal position disputing the free market principles in which they operate. The players union made the right decision to decertify so they can combat the owners recklessness with an antitrust lawsuit. The longer it would have taken the union to decertify, the longer it would have took them to file suit.

Money drove the NFL to a new CBA, which appeases both parties. The owners got a percentage back, and the players got a better compensation package with revenue sharing. The new 10 year CBA entails; the owners receiving 53% of the revenue, and the players receiving 47%. According to ESPN.com;

· An increase in salaries and benefits, with the salary cap at $120 million, plus $22 million in benefits, for 2011. Owners must spend 99 percent of the salary cap in 2011-12 in cash;

· Minimum salary increases of $50,000 that will increase annually;

· New work rules and shortened offseason workouts, which are expected to result in fewer injuries and perhaps longer careers;

· Better health benefits, including more than $1 billion for post-career injuries;

· Five consecutive days off duirng bye weeks, sources told ESPN.

On the owners' side, there's:

· More money to invest as gross revenues rise;

· peace for 10 years that makes it easier to work out long-term business deals

· ability to assist in the development of new stadiums because certain revenue was not

· was not included in total football revenues;

· less money to untested rookies, specifically high-first round draft picks, although that money

will be redirected to veterans.

In contrast, neither party got everything they bargained for in fact; they both lost some perks. Commissioner Roger Goodell, and the owners did not get their wish for a 18 game season. The players were not granted a opt-out clause, which is odd, because the owners used theirs to for that very purpose. I don’t know if the owners knew what they were doing, but their greed actually improved the CBA.

Phil Knight & Oregons Thinline

I was instructed to write about intellectual property issues within my business plan, and to identify recent controversy with copyright, trademark, or patent laws in sports. The information discussed in this blog may not directly relate to the intellectual properties listed, but they indirectly relate to other legalities JG must be knowledgeable of. Much like Nike, JG has to be mindful of all potential infractions copyright, trademark, and patent laws. NIKE has done a good job in securing contracts and staying clear of sanctions. The conglomerate as a whole has is steady growing, and maybe on the brink of cornering the market. However, JG cannot duplicate mistakes made by NIKE. NIKE has thrown its weight around for quite a while, and they have endured an insurmountable amount scrutiny.

Recently, reports surfaced about Oregon and Phil Knight giving improper benefits to recruits and players. Knight an Oregon alumnist, and co-founder of NIKE is being securitized for allegedly enticing recruits with expensive gift. The NCAA alleges Phil Knight approved his production team to manufacture a special pair of Air Jordan’s worth $250,000 for signing a letter of intent. Wow! $250,000 for a pair of Jordan’s that Michael Jordan himself may not have, that’s leverage.

Blue Chip running backs LeMicheal James, and Lache Seastrunk from Texas are at the forefront of this matter, because they are the two parties involved. According to Kelley:

Texas "scout" Willie Lyles, who was paid $25,000 by Oregon for his alleged skills in talent assessment, included in his report to Oregon head coach Chip Kelly the inside insight that Seastrunk loved Air Jordan’s. In a tweet sent July 5, Lyles clarified his quote in a column written by The Oregonian's John Canzano. "The shoes were on display and I never said they were given to Lache (Seastrunk)."

Lyles the CEO of Complete Scouting Services a Texas based recruiting company have been linked to a host of NCAA investigations over the years. Lyles and Oregon bickered about the matter for a few days, and were able to agree to disagree. If the NCAA can find substantive evidence that Knight and his conglomerate committed foul play, the sanction issued by the NCAA could be very harsh.

Those critical of Knights influence at UO call him the puppet master, because he’s the driving the driving force behind athletic program. Knight has pumped well over $100 million into UO’s athletic program. Knight has improved Autzen Stadium, built a Matthew Knight Arena for the men and women’s Basketball teams. Knight is not your average booster. He gets private tutorials from both offensive and defensive coaches; he has his own headset and generally calls one play a game, and he is kept abreast of all singings.

According to Sports Illustrated Michael Rosenberg; The school's uniforms, more than any other team's, are a billboard for his company, Nike. There is a sense that every new building and every important hire needs Knight's stamp of approval. Unfortunately, Knight and his conglomerate could be banned from UO, or have limited access to UO athletic program if allegations are true. If Knight cannot directly influence the athletic program what will come of the Ducks?

I Recently I spoke with a very ambitious man of valor named Jerren Pierce. Pierce and his partner recently started their own sporting entity that specializes in exposing High School Athletes to College Recruits. According to Just Maximizing Potential In addition to posting information about the athlete including GPAs, statistics, and highlight videos, the website will mainly serve as a social networking site for athletes, coaches, and recruiters.

1) What made you start this business?

Just Maximizing Potential was started because of the passion I have for high school student athletes. I feel that sometimes when playing on the high school level you do not get the exposure you deserve to get at times to colleges. I was one of those players so that is why I started JMP.

2) How did you get involved in Sports, and where does the passion come from?

I got involved in sports from a young age; I was one of those kids that always dreamed about playing professionally growing up. Growing up I pretty much played every sport that there was to play.

3) Exactly how does your organization help High School Athletes gain exposure?

JMP serves basically as a middleman to help reach out to colleges for student athletes. On the website justmp.com student athletes can get profiles and are able to edit their profile the ways they want to by: adding videos, pictures, newspaper articles and even blogging.

We also take it another step by adding different events that will help the student athletes such as: combines (various sports), camps, tournaments and All Star games (in future). From these events we are able to add their numbers to their profiles to make their profiles accurate for colleges to view.

We also take it another step by sending out all their information to colleges across the country. If any coaches have any questions about certain student athletes we are able to direct them appropriately.

4) How does your organization help athletes as they progress on to the next level?

One way we help these student athletes progress is by offering sports performance. This where the student athletes can train to get stronger and faster in order to perform on that level.

5) What is your favorite Football team, why does Football matter?

For college I like Oregon; I am not a bandwagon person either. I have liked them since Akli Smith and Joey Harrington were QBs at the school. I like them because they are not afraid of being who they are; they are not normal. Football to me matters because it was one of the sports I fell in love with. It is a great game.

6) How much, if any has the world of sports changed since you first fell in love with it?

Nothing but the athletes has really changed. Everyone is faster and stronger now so it so much more competitive in any sport.

7) What do you think about Sports Agents?

If they do the correct job I think they are great as long as the stay ethical in their practices.

8) Do you think the NCAA ruling against agents is to protect their pockets, or do you believe that they are genuinely concerned about the player’s future?

Being on a NCAA committee while in college I know what the thought patterns are. They are genuinely concerned about the player’s future. When these players are coming out of college they are very young still and when it involves money; it is like a child with candy. NCAA is doing a great job in how they are handling this.

9) Do you think that colleges, and universities should pay their student athletes?

The only answer to that is if you pay one person you have to pay everyone. It will change the meaning of college sports if this occurs. There will be so many lawsuits that will occur from this if this was to occur. You also have to think of a formula to pay every student athlete that plays so when thinking outside the box: you have approximately 60 scholarship football players and about 40 more players. Women’s basketball has about 12 scholarships and about 5 more players. What would be the formula to pay the players the same amount?

Here are my social media marketing tips for Chris Bosh. Chris experienced lot turmoil this past year. He received a host of backlash from his decision to sign with the Miami Heat. Joining the likes of D. Wade, and LeBron James raised Chris Bosh’s popularity. He was placed on platform that he always dreamed about, but the scrutiny took a toll on him. In fact he stop tweeting and staying in touch with fans, to cope with the season. However, things only got worse for Chris!

The Biggest Sports Story of the Decade

The greatest sports story of this decade belongs to the New Orleans Saints. No other professional team, regardless of its league had to endure the level of scrutiny that the Black and Gold has. Prior to the 2000 season, the Saints were known around the NFL as the Aints! Disgraced fans attended games with large paper bags on their heads to hide their faces, a host of their games were blacked out and, talented players were reluctant to play for the organization.

Coach Jim Haslett brought the Saints into the 20^th century with Jeff Blake, Ricky Williams, and Joe Horn as the leaders of the team. During the up and down season, Jeff Blake was knocked out in the 11^th game with a broken foot, Blake was immediately replaced by a guy very few people outside of Virginia knew named Aaron Brooks. Brooks led the Saints to a 3-2 finish, and a wild card berth. Brooks extraordinary play won over the fans, as he guided the team to the their first playoff win against the defending champions, the St. Louis Rams. Unfortunately, for Brooks the Saints were upended by the Minnesota Vikings the following the week.

The following season the Saints did not make the playoffs despite beating the eventual or predestined Super Bowl champions, the Tampa Buccaneers. In addition, team owner Tom Benson fired former executive of the year Randy Mueller. As a Saints fan this was the type of corruption that plagued our beloved team, and tainted our spirits. Nonetheless, the Saints finished the Jim Haslett era by missing the playoffs the following two seasons, finishing 8-8 in 2003, and 2004. In 2005, Haslett was released in week 3, and the Saints went on to finish 3-13. Despite the records set by Aaron Brooks and the minimal success he achieved as the Saints quarterback he’d quickly become the villain and was released in 2005 as well. This by far was the most trying time as a Saints fan and South Louisiana residents, because Hurricane Katrina changed our lives forever.

Hurricane Katrina ravished the states along the Gulf Shore, crippling New Orleans, and causing our beloved Saints to play every game on their schedule away from home. In fact, they played one home game at Giants Stadium, against the Giants, with the remainder of their home games being split between The Alamo Dome in San Antonio, TX, and Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, LA. The Superdome was used as a shelter for those left in the city, and unfortunately for some, the Super Dome became their deathbed. After the mayhem in the Super Dome subsided, people began to move forward and Tom Benson expressed his desire to move the team elsewhere. This uncertainty put the Who Dat Nation in dismay, and caused a big uproar. The relocation controversy got extremely messy for all involved parties, and forced Governor Kathleen Blanco, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, and Tom Benson to agree to terms that will keep the Saints in New Orleans for a long time.

On January 17, 2006 the Saints hired Sean Peyton as their new head coach, and signed quarterback Drew Brees on March 14, 2006. After the $185 million dollar renovations were completed to the New Orleans Superdome, and the 2006 schedule was released the Saints quickly sold out every home game for the first time in franchise history. On September 25, 2006 the Saints played their home opener against the Atlanta Falcons and beat them on national television 23-3. In fact, ESPN deemed the broadcast as their highest rated program ever. ESPN recorded an estimated 10,850,000 homes viewed the game, with an 11.8 rating. The game had more viewers than any other show on television that night, and was deemed the second highest rated cable program ever. In 2007 ESPN rewarded the Saints with an ESPY award for “The Best Moment in Sports”.

Later that year the Saints clinched their first division title, and earned a first round bye for the first time in team history. After beating the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Day, the Saints were defeated in the NFC Championship game by soon to be World Champs Chicago Bears. In 2007 the Saints sold out every home game again, but finished the season 7-9. In 2008 the Saints did not make the playoffs for the second consecutive year due to a lack luster performance by their defense. Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 5,068 yards, falling just 16 yards short of Dan Marino’s single season record of 5084 yards, and Wide-out Lance Moore finished the season with 928 yards just 72 yards short of 1000.

In the Saints 20O9-2010 campaign, they started the season 13-0 and recorded the longest winning streak in team history. Two weeks later the New Orleans Saints loss to the underachieving Dallas Cowboys sparking a three game losing streak to end the season. On their path to the Super Bowl the Saints beat three future Hall of Fame quarterbacks in consecutive games. Reggie Bush put on a memorable show against the Arizona Cardinals as he rushed for 84 yards rushing on five carries including a 46-yard touchdown run, and a pivotal 83-yard punt return for a score. His heroism combined with great offensive execution and a stifling defense, gave the Saints a 45-14 victory over Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals.

The following week, the Saints shocked the NFL again, by pulverizing Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. The Saints defense pounded Brett Favre as every snapped he took virtually forcing him into submission. Yet, Brett Favre and his Minnesota Vikings continued to fight and nearly won the game. However, costly turnovers from Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, and Brett Favre ended the Vikings hope. The Saints won the game in overtime when Garret Hartley nailed a 40-yard field goal with 10:15 left on the clock.

On Sunday February 8^th, 2010, the nation witnessed the greatest sports story of the decade unfold. My New Orleans Saints altered the fate of their 43 yr. ole history by beating the heavenly favored Indianapolis Colts. After falling behind by a 10-point deficit, the most courageous play in Super Bowl history was perfected. Sean Payton instructed kicker Garret Hartley to execute a low percentage onside – kick, and Hartley nailed it. Not only did he catch the Colts off guard, but also the 74,000 in attendance and the millions watching at home. Everyone was stunned! The execution of this play sparked a rally that no Colt fan could foresee. The Saints scored 31 points, capped off by Tracy Porters game winning interception of Peyton Manning.

In conclusion, the city of New Orleans, the people of Louisiana, and the residents of the Gulf Coast had been waiting 43 years to celebrate as champions, and we did in every facet of the word. We partied for about two months straight. The New Orleans Saints are a staple in the community, and we the people feel a special connection with our team. They lean on us for inspiration, and we lean on them for motivation. They have helped eased the aftermath of Katrina, and provided the region with an economic boost. Between the two neighboring cities New Orleans and Baton Rouge, both are listed in the top 25 as two of the most dangerous cities in the country. However, both cities have seen making the top 25 list. However, both cities seen a brief decrease in crime after the championship season. I could go on and on about the Saints, and how we celebrated after the victory, but that would make this story extremely long. So remember this, February 2, 2010 is the day that the Saints became America’s team.

When you hear the term “The Clutch”, the average person immediately begins to think about a car pedal, or the heralded magazine known for its juicy topics. In the entertainment industry the term “The Clutch” refers to an eclectic songwriting group that’s responsible for composing a series of successful hits for a number of artist. The Atlanta based group consists of Candice Clotiel “CG” Nelson, Ezekiel “Zeke” Lewis, Patrick Michael “J. Que” Smith, Belewa Muhammad, and Kerri Lynn Hilson. This harmonious five some is great inspiration for young music enthusiast like myself, who long for a prosperous careers in the music industry. Recently, I was granted the opportunity to briefly interview the award- winning songwriter Ezekiel Lewis. We spoke on the matters of negotiation, and how he manages them.

What is the job description of a publisher?

A music publisher is responsible for ensuring that songwriters and composers receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. A publisher licenses composition, helps monitor where compositions are used, collects royalties and distributes them to the composers. They also secure commissions for music and promote existing compositions to recording artists, film and TV.

In negotiations what method do you use to reach the (BATNA) The Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement?

I try and do deals that make sense for me at this point. Otherwise, I stay away.

How do you deal with negative emotions during negotiations?

I deal with those emotions by trying to see the other party’s perspective; also I categorize business and personal interactions

How do you separate the people from the problem?

I separate the people from the problem by understanding that the actions of a person do not always define the complete person. However, when possible, I stay away from those who have proven to be difficult to deal with.

Do you ever seek mutual benefit when negotiating, or is it solely about leverage?

There are times when “mutual benefit” is paramount. There are other times depending on the history of a situation, when leveraging takes priority.

Does your current position in the industry allow you to have any leverage or power when negotiating?

Yes, at times.

Have you ever yielded to pressure during a contractual agreement?

Earlier in my career, the “ bigger picture” was the focus so that

I was granted the opportunity to “accomplish” so to speak. As you advance in your career you find that “pressure” subsides as you become more accomplished.

The Art of Soul Music

It’s a general consensus that Soul Music is a blend between R&B, Blues, and Gospel music dating back as early as the 1950’s. The inspiring art form derived from the early struggles within the Black community, which gave birth to a few commonly known forefathers: Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and James Brown. According to Nero: there are many different types of Soul music, including, but not limited to: Southern Soul, Neo-Soul and Psychedelic Soul (which paved the way for Funk music in the 1960s).

As a fan of Soul Music, I have been able to listen, analyze, and relate to its various styles, however Neo-Soul is the one element that I subconsciously clung to.

As its name (new-soul) implies, Neo-Soul music is essentially modern-day soul music, with contemporary attitudes and sensibilities. It differs from con temporary R&B in that it's obviously more soulful, and it also tends to have deeper messages and meanings than R&B (Nero, 2011). During the mid 90’s my mother’s speakers filled my ears with what most considered to be the beginning of the Neo Soul movement; Raphael Saadiq, DeAngelo, and Erykah Badu. Although Kedar Massenburg of Motown Records is credited with coining the phrase “Neo Soul”, I credit my mother for the genres informal introduction into my life.

During the 90’s artist like Erykah Badu, Raphael Saadiq, DeAngelo, and Luaryn Hill, and Mary J. Blidge musical influence was grand. In fact they played an intricate role in my love for music. Today, artist like India Arie, Jill Scott, N’Dambi, Goapele, Leela James, Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, The Roots, Dwele, Musiq, and a host of others keep my speakers vibrating, and my eardrums attentive. In addition soul artist Jaguar Wright has provided some interesting dialogue on Neo-Soul, and its hype. Her sophomore album entitled “Divorcing Neo to Marry Soul raised eyebrows in the music industry.

In her 2005 interview with Doorie Williams-Wheeler of Thabiz.com, Jaguar discussed her dislike for the Neo-Soul title stating:

“What the title means. Neo-soul. Neo meaning new. There is nothing new about soul music. Don't believe the hype. I'm not a part of the hype, I don't believe in hype. Divorcing myself from the stigmata, embracing the history. They don't have a right to take that history from us. I don't know why but for some reason so many black artists feel the need to divorce themselves from their history and their culture and their roots. I'm not one of them people. Divorcing the garbage, marrying the real”.

I understand Jaguars frustration with Black artist feeling the need to divorce their history, however it’s not just the artist its Black people in general. Somehow we have been misguided, and led to believe that our indigenous roots are noting more than an afterthought. Soul music has produced some serious truth tellers in its most glorious past. Finding the conviction to pursue our fondest dreams and the courage to face-up to our darkest truth is perhaps the artist’s greatest challenge (N’Dambi). Despite the criticism, and confusion associated with the Neo Soul and Soul genre, along with its limited appeal to mainstream America. I’m infatuated with the sound!

Dee-1 "One Man Army"

A couple of years ago I attended The Extreme battle of the Bands in downtown Baton Rouge, in hopes of seeing my sister and her band mates win first place. The event line-up consisted of popular high school bands from in and around the Greater Baton Rouge area, in addition to local and national recording artist like: Lil Boosie & Webbie. To my surprise I receive more than what I bargained for, not only did my sister and her band mates take first place, but I had the rare opportunity to hear positive Hip-Hop from an up and coming artist named Dee-1.

When introduced by Baton Rouges on self-proclaimed gangsta turned activist Silky Slim, Dee-1 charged the stage with swagger rarely seen in the capital city. His aggressive yet optimistic flow captivated my eardrums and subconsciously made my head nod back and forth. As I continued to listen his soulful tune, I was astounded by his lyrical content and stage presence. By the end of his set I found myself reciting the chorus in my head saying: “I’m strapped with a pad, my pen is gat, a mask and a vest plus I’m dressed in all black, God by my side so no man can harm me this is the story of a One Man Army”.

After the battle I began searching for “One Man Army” but was unsuccessful, mainly because I could not remember Dee-1’s name. Shortly thereafter, I conceded my search and waited for his music to find me and it did. One cool February evening I was listening to the MTV Jams channel, and completing a Full Sail assignment when Dee-1’s “One Man Army” video came on. I immediately stop working on my assignment and blasted the soulful tune, after learning his name I goggled Dee-1 and found his website.

Born & raised in the heart of New Orleans, Dee-1 shares the same struggles as the legendary artists that put the 504 on the map, but he is determined to represent the city with a different viewpoint by using insightful and thought provoking rhymes in his music (Dee-1, 2011). While reading his bio, I became more intrigued with Dee-1 the artist who graduated from LSU, and taught at a local middle school.

“Dee-1’s music creates an atmosphere that welcomes all listeners from nearly any background. His positive message extends well beyond the stereotype of the traditional conscious rapper, because as he says, “real recognizes real.” If you have never seen a live Dee-1 show, you’re missing out! Dee has the rare ability to perform in nearly any environment, from arenas to nightclubs to schools to churches; and the response is always the same. Outstanding!! (Dee-1, 2011)”

From Mr. Augustine to Dee-1, he has been featured in various media outlets such as Billboard Magazine, CNN, MTV, BET, XXL, 2DopeBoyz, and various columns and newspapers. He has released six mix tapes, one album, three videos, and performed alongside some of the biggest names in the music, including his recent performance at Jazz Fest, 2011. As an artist I admire his approach, and respect his lyrical ability. There are only a handful of artist that I respect in the music industry, and Dee-1 is the newest member of that club. The music of a war child

As I scrolled through the list of speakers on Ted.com, I came across Hip Hop artist, and former child soldier Emanuel Jal. Jal who was born and raised in Sudan, and was taken into the Sudanese Army at he tender age of seven. His early introduction to war caused him a great deal of pain as death claimed most his of his family, and village. After becoming a child solider Jal said he ‘wanted to kill all Muslim, and as many Arabs as possible, the training wasn’t easy but I wanted revenge for my family”. After learning the truth about the violence that claimed his family and friends Jal change his mindset and sought relief.

During his speech Emmanuel Jal spoke about a woman named Emma McCune, Emma was a British native who became an aid worker, and married rebel commander Riek Macher. Emma rescued over 150 child soldiers and met Emmanuel at the age of eleven, after he escaped from the Sudanese rebel army. She later adopted him, and more importantly saves his life. Shortly thereafter Emma was abruptly killed in a traffic accident, leaving Emmanuel to be cared for by her friends. In her absence Emma’s friends took care of Emmanuel making sure he stayed out of trouble and finished school.

Emmanuel Jal is doing marvelous works in Africa, the former child soldier turned rapper founded Gau Africa, which is pronounced (Gwaah). Gau derives from a tribal language in Southern Sudan that stands for peace. Gau Africa is a charity that helps its natives overcome the effects of war and poverty. “Each of our projects focus on providing an education to children and young adults who would otherwise be denied such opportunity”(Gua Africa, 2011). Jal donates his breakfast and lunch to a charity that he founded to build a school in Sudan. The day he eats his breakfast is the day that he has earned enough money to build their school. The importance of education is something that he’s willing to die for.

Music became Jal outlet for pain during his maturation. I found it interesting when Jal spoke about how much he hated the people in the North, but always dance to their music.

“Music is the only thing that has power to enter your cell system, your mind, your heart, even your soul, and spirit, and can even influence the way you leave without you knowing. Music can make you want to get out the bed and shake your leg without even wanting to do it”.

Emanuel Jal is a pillar of hope for a village, a country, and lost souls everywhere. On his Philanthropic journey he has inspired many to aid in his fight against education, poverty, and war. His troubled demeanor, chilling words, and fearless swagger grabbed the attention of the listening audience and placed his mission into their cognitive thoughts. This was a very informative speech capped off by an emotional performance dedicated to Emma McCune.

The IDJTA & Its Importance

Before discussing the purpose, programs, and relevancy of The International Disc Jockey Trade Association, I must first give my readers a brief history lesson. DeeJaying is an art form that has been around since the 70s. Around that time a Jamaican DJ by the named Kool Herc relocated to the West Bronx’s in New York City where he introduced the streets to his Jamaican style of DeeJaying, which was free styling rhymes over dub reggae tracks. However, after he realized Reggae was a popular in New York at the time, he began free styling over instrumental sections of popular music. Shortly thereafter he figured out how to extend the short instrument breaks by using two identical records and the audio mixer. This form of DeeJaying became known as beat breaking and spread quickly throughout the culture inspiring DJs including Afrika Bambattaa, and Grand Master Flash.

Afrika Bambattaa a DJ from the South Bronx in New York City mastered beat braking, and played an intricate role in Hip Hop’s development in the 70s According to Zulunation.com: Afrika Bambaattaa is one of the three main originators of break-beat DeeJaying, and is respectfully known ad the “Grandfather” and “Godfather” and The Amen Ra of universal Hip Hop Culture as well as the Father of The Electro Funk Sound. Afika Bambaataa is often associated with the naming of the culture we have grown to love Hip Hop. After realizing the brilliance of the Zulu, he co– opted the Black Spades street gang into the international culturally oriented Zulu nation.

Thanks to the mentoring of the Afrika Bambaataa, OG Crazy Eddie learned the value of the DJ. He has taken his deejaying ability and his acquired industry knowledge and formed a trade association representing DJay’s internationally.
