One of the first things I did when we moved into our new area, was be friendly with local business folk and merchants. It wasn't difficult because of a short stint helping launch business to service providers for complete fulfillment package. I started to chat with the business owner and his wife later on. Not because she was introduced or was friendly, but because I'd asked.

He liked to gripe on about how hard it was to run a business that were being run to the ground by the big box stores like WalMart, Superstore (Loblaw's).

When the pandemic hit, his bellyache pitch got shriller, metaphorically.

Don’t treat customers dumb

If you have any APP or service, it is imperative you remove any team members who interact with customers that come off horribly with the people who give them a job (the customer), that includes everyone from the CEO to janitor.

Rinse the toxic culture of sexual harassment or bullying.

It doesn’t matter how far up the chain you are, you are directly negatively impacting your company when you turn a blind eye.

Worse, if you’re part of the problem.

There are telltale signs.

Good people leave

People with bad behaviour settle in and stay.

Pay attention to employees with accolades who leave.

If harassment or bullying exists, turnover is really high.

Bullying supervisors fire outright or push to the edge.

Look for increasing doctor mandated “stay at home” orders.

Customers who leave don’t tell you goodbye

Like the Titanic, it may be a hairline fracture, to be misdiagnosed.

Listening to recorded interactions with customers violates your people’s rights.

If you know how to hire trustworthy, professional, talented folks you won’t need to spy on them to drum up mistakes.

If you value yourself above your customer, you will eventually will fail.

Arrogance has no place in business.

Don’t mix up arrogance for confidence.

I’ve seen several men hire cocky, arrogant little bastards. Is that because they connect at a deeper level?

Men aren’t threatened by cocky, arrogant other men.

Women are threatened by confident, capable, committed other women.

If a woman is considered cocky, she’s out the door, especially if she’s opinionated with lots of ideas and leanings towards fixing.

That was Steve Job's brilliance. He looked at ordinary things that were common or accepted and wanted to create something that would solve a problem: being able to carry around all your music, listen to the radio, podcasts, e-meetings from the palm of your hand, and a telephone to boot!

Down the road, was someone who imagined "the road ahead" and set about to fix some of the most beneficial needs. Yep, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs emerged from the disasters during the 1980s.

Today, not knowing, strongly hunched that Jeff Bezoes was greatly influenced by their geniuses during his educational tenure at Princeton University, no less, during the 1980s. That emphasizes my point!

During the horrible recession of the 1980s emerged some significant technological changes. To move from main frame computers that lived in climate and temperature controlled areas to a desktop computer.

Anyone who used a computer in the 1980s cursed Microsoft for launching new versions that drove consumers out of NEED, not necessity. You had to be able to work on a computer. Computers need to be able to communicate, then they are put on a network.

The biggest needs drive the greatest results.

The best innovators fix those problems.

The greatest innovators fix the problem with a better solution. (idea, image, tech, education, science, medicine, business ......)

Some gifted with foresight, anticipate a need by understanding a certain industry which evolves around fulfilling a specific need. Sounds mixed up.

How did Jeff Bezoes anticipate how important getting essential items, food, etc. delivered to consumers home? Amazon has magically saved Christmas for folks isolating, quarantining or just keeping a low profile.

We grandparents get it. Something that skipped our kids' generation and beyond. Flipping through a catalogue that magically appeared in the fall, for anyone to flip through and imagining one of everything or a game where you had to choose only one thing from a page! Rich beyond imagination.

InstaCart gets it. Uber Eats will likely outshine Uber drivers in short order. Skip the Dishes has surged the popularity of just ordering in dinner. Or lunch or the munchies.

Slow down and cherish what is important now. Then go on to fix what needs fixing. Innovatively perhaps.

2020: Do we know it's Christmas time this year?

Five years later, life looks different.

I certainly look at life differently.

2020: Five years have gone by.

From my optics then, I would never have predicted or believed I'd end up where I am now.

From the way the world was going in 2015, I'd say I was more worried about world peace than anything else.

Five years ago, one daughter moved to Vancouver while the other remained local attending university in her chosen field of art.

Five years ago, she was being taken down to the armed forces recruitment office, the same way his father had with him and his four brothers. Two did enlist, one veered towards science and medicine while the other made a million or two with daughters of the Olympic status, shy. Of five boys, only two got divorced. That's a milestone any mother ever would have breaking the fifty percent failure of marriages.

When she griped and complained how her dad really didn't get her after he also suggested she be a stockbroker. She was exceptional in math, athletic and well mannered to anyone on the outside. Polite even. The fact that she turned pottie mouth to me in private was our sacred secret.

The boundaries have been set this five years later.

Larger and magnificent in scope, bigger than the plague.

Unless you count Donald Trump who has lowered America's reputation in so many prying eyes. We don't have to watch TV news, get email news, or stream media ~ he's glaring on Twitter and ineptly putting his foot in his mouth constantly. The embarrassing uncle every nervous wedding bride fears for tipping the scales of whisky. Except in Trump's case, he doesn't drink, smoke or do drugs. Isn't that a case in point favoring former President Bill Clinton who "did not have sex with that woman".

When Rob, the Hunkster Hubster, and I went on our third date, it was to a Halloween Party dressed as Monica Lewinksky (sp?) and Bill Clinton. He wore a suit that was 90s smart bluish grey with a white shirt, cufflinks & holding a cigar. I had to get grey spray hair paint to turn his blonde sandy locks to age him.

Fast forward to now, we've come through a lot.

The grey is permanent. Without special effects.

We're poised and ready for yet another lockdown.

Keeping him safe is my biggest priority now.

Do we know it's Christmas?

When I woke up today and reread what I posted yesterday, it reminded me of the phenomena that began 30 years ago, 1984, when I was an optimistic, confident 24-year-old young lady, with the world at my doorstep, filled with that "anything was possible" and "can do" vigor.

Granted, I was already married, but without children at the time. My then husband and I spent our Christmas holidays usually on a bus filled with 15 year-old hockey players going on a trip to Spokane for a tournament. My husband was a co-coach of a Bantam AA hockey team made up of a crew of dreamers and believers that they could reach for the impossible. In 1984, we celebrated Christmas per usual, Christmas Eve Mass and then on to Boxing Day, where we had to take down our tree, pack everything up so we could take the road trip. That was the basis of Christmas: giving of one's self for others.

That year a phenomena was revealed in Britain that would be remembered every year since at Christmas Time: Source Wikipedia:

How was the idea born?

Bob Geldof was deeply bothered and moved by the flight of starving children Ethiopia. He decided to leverage his contacts from the UK, Ireland, to raise money to help these unfortunates by creating a unique song, enlisting major the talent of the day, to record a song that all proceeds would directly go towards raising funds.

Fast forward 30 years and I'm a parent of kids of similar ages to what I was back then. Another "Do they know it's Christmas?" was released 2014/15 thirty years after the original.

It comes as no surprise that UK sensation One Direction softly vocalizes the first words acapello. They are a favorite of my daughters 21 and 23, not so far off of my own age 30 years earlier.

I like to lead in with graphics that end up serving as a thumbnail recognizably identical to the lead in photo or art or image -- see the sidebar where it shows blogs that are popular with readers. There was an upsweep of clicks during the last blog -- it must have resonated with folks.

I like to then start with a memorable quote. That strikes my fancy or indirectly relates to the blog or theme.

The following quote was copied and pasted directly from a local newspaper with our local mayor. OMG I don't follow my own advice!!

I tell ya, having a Blog can lasso you

and whip you back around or narrow the road

back to a more manageable life.

As usual, I start writing about one thing and then

that filters into personal lives as our twilight years unfold.

Maybe I'll segue into Career Advice on my blog.

Who knows.

I do know that I want a semblance of order,

actually crave it, since we're in the middle of packing boxes for movers who will be here in 36 hours or so.

Maybe I can help others, young men or women, veterans or leaders by giving a

few pointers -- can't hurt. I mean, I'm selling social

media like my life depends on it these days.

Encouraging everyone, as an evangelist often narrates

beautifully, to get on board.

Once I'm back to painting and writing and developing

QUANTITY and ACTIVITY does not mean QUALITY results

Based on my conversation with my favorite advocate these days from our Bank, I'm more optimistic.

For the last couple of weeks, we've had our place up for sale amid all the fearfulness of COVID-19, Coronavirus. That likely demonstrates that we continue to live on the edge.

For the past couple of years, I've had quite a great deal of conversations and "market evaluations" by realtors from my local cesspool of choices.

Overall, not mentioning any names, with the intention to share in generalities to avoid any privacy infringements.

They are a lazy bunch.

They look for listings to sit on and sell rather than showing around buyers for the most part. My perception.

Real estate has changed so much nowadays. The picturesque display of your home is the most critical aspect: how does it look on a screen. That is taking "staging" to the top in priorities. Clean counters, no photos, no insight into who has lived here for 26 years.

It all comes down to the MLS: Multiple Listing Service. Any licensed realtor can access it, navigate what ones are showing up on websites or get looped into email streams of listing.

Right from the start, I showed our realtor a place and kept referencing it as a benchmark.

That was when I had done research from all kinds of emails from a number of digital fronts.

In Calgary, Justin Havre & Associates and Tost Real Estate have won my admiration for fine tuning and honing in on my preferences so that the notifications are really exceptional.

We signed up for our current realtor as is good practice, and it is just not as robust or attune to my clicks.

All of the places we have gone to view, were found from third party emails and links, nothing from our realtor's website. In fact, even when I do a search through those engines and websites - both corporately and branded - my favorite place in Q has never surfaced on any of the email generated links or searches.

If anything, there is a really concerning subpar perception that speed and turnover should supersede quality.

That's not my style. Even though it works for many.

Now that our house is conditionally sold, we EXPECT that the deal will be honored.

The buyers saw our home twice personally.

A home inspection is good sense but it is no where part of the law that it is required.

Our first offer earlier this year that is part of the same complex was outbid. I'm very aware of the conditions. We're going to see another unit tomorrow.

I have a skewed perception to today's realtor: skip through the homework and focus on flipping links and more places.

Before scheduling our viewing tomorrow, I expect our realtor to inform us of something sits on the title, what it is, what it means, what it costs -- ALL BEFORE scheduling our time for the viewing.

Coming back with: I told you, I did this only shows that we're missing the critical points.

THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT IS WHAT IS THE CRITICAL POINT?

The end in mind is what all parties had agreed to.

Our realtor was given a link to a place that I found exceptional and was viewed on our first day out, continuing to impress.

The sale of our place, has to meet a certain number in order for us to be able to buy that place.

Our realtor and us, the sellers, need to be on the same page. Drilling us down in price was not representing our interests when it was $30,000 less than what we listed, $45,000 less than what the realtor's market evaluation was.

The song and dance on how our place needs work, has had 30 showings in two weeks he said was all because of his work. He missed the price point conversation.

The possession date and price were all danced to the buyers' bidding, but the removal of conditions was too lengthy - I see that now.

Expecting me, recovering from breast cancer and my brain injured husband to be able to move in less than 30 days is not looking after our interests.

With a quick possess, the home inspection deadline should have been set within 5 days or max a week.

Don't let a lot of flurry of activity disarm you into thinking that the sales rep you are working with is taking care of you.

A sales rep who continually reinforces the final goal, references it when a sale is being made, ensured it would cooincide with our outgoing offer. We lost on an offer because our possession date did not tee up with the sellers. That was a critical check point that should have been covered because our realtor had all that information at his disposal.

I'm sure he's doing the normal way to operate and he is cheered on by his company because they're fooled into activity demands.

Ruling by activity allows a lot of details to slip through from "sell at all cost" rather than shredding the company's reputation along with the realtors. Making sure the customers needs are taken care of is going to impact that reputation and feedback. Plus details like conditions removal deadline would not be missed. Or, a realtor who grasps the injured spouse, would do the best in making it painless and as smooth as possible, not tossing it back on the caregiver.

FOCUS on building a tribe online on all social media, not merely a following

FOCUS is the arrow that
shoots you to the moon!

Tackle one day at a time,
one task a day, scoped out,
scaled, cost analysis,
homework done.

THAT FOCUS can make or break you
trying to juggle too many priorities at once It is 100% contributor of any ONE downfall or failure.

Whether it is a personal life speed bump ~something that takes you out to left field, completely takes you off your game.

Or a slap in the ass from the making of income to support yourself, your family and significant others.

It could be at FULL WARP speed coming right at you and even Captain Kirk or Mr. Spock could avert disaster from.

Watching a family member go through the struggles of survival, chronic pain tempered with oxicotin medication that evolved into dependency, then frozen so they turned to "street drugs" to soften the excruciating pain and diabetes side effects.

They ended up dying in the care of a medical facility in B.C. whose medical team had written off as an addict. Not receiving the same care as what society deems acceptable.

Everything kept coming at em: financial struggles where things became sources of money, compounded by multiple health infliction that were increasingly attacking mental wellness.

EVERYONE struggles to COPE

Nobody gets a pass.

One woman's agony is another person's mother or sister.

A new job, nerves, insecurity, lack of confidence from it taking years to find employment. ~It's just another struggle someone else is trying to conquer.

WHEN YOU do too much at once
Something is going to cave. No one is Wonder Woman or Superman or lives in a bat cave with extraordinary wealth.

For every PROBLEM there's a SOLUTION
How you tackle it is dependent on FOCUS. Getting out the paper, with a pencil and drawing it out. What is in front of you? What is preventing you from realizing your dreams?

You can't get without steps
Identical to pigs can't fly.
You have to break it down.
Once you see what is in front of you: it could be three columns or two.
You have to be able to break it down by steps, you can't leap over tall buildings, nor can you get to the final finish with that.

Let's keep it to three to maximize formula

COLUMN A ; PLAN A; PLAN B
For example: Accept new job
PROs and CONs on scale of 1-10, 10 best
Financial implications: Income -expenses less> living costs (mortgage/rent+utilities
+phone/cell) = leftover for gas, smokes, drinks, groceries

OR, you can define COLUMN A and B to be simply on financial metrics

Then you start to focus on one item at a time. What step allows you to move to the next step towards the final accomplishment?

IF it is a new job, use my "30-60-90 day Plan" to map it out so that you can hit the day running. BONUS if you hand it to your boss before you're even hired - showing you can break it down to steps and timelines.

Just starting this off, you will discover how much you have been scrambling to accomplishment way too many things at once. Naively thinking that you can finish in all quick swoop, while distractions from the other important matters that are falling behind too.

By setting a FOCUS, you can teach yourself discipline. You force yourself to realize that in order to get this over with, you have things you may not want to do, perhaps someone can give you advice?

Sidebars and unfocused activities, deviate from finishing anything, missing deadlines, mentally scattered. It can give the impression that you are indecisive or a stumbling buffoon when you are anything but.

I see people who are in leadership who can be like this. It is from the inability to divide and conquer tasks.

When you start to draw the plans out, follow the steps, adding new steps you discover on the quest, adjust timelines, deduct costs or delays.

That is really no different that what a Project Manager does:

1) Determine the project scope: What the completed result will be, what is required to finish it, who will be required to work on it, how the decision making process works, what the budget is, how overruns on costs will be reported? Who and how will third party resources be determined and/or accounted for by cost or by delays or time improvements.

In this, you are drawing out what your focus should be based on what the pros and cons dictated should be the highest priority. The more honest and detailed you are, the easier it is going to assess and debrief on how it went.

This is discipline.

That is focus.

Your best assets are your people. If that is not the case, you're doomed.

Organizations better be ramped up for the Millennial culture that is swarming into all the best workplaces. There is a lot of razzle dazzle that you need to have embedded into the culture if you are filling the front lines with them.

Roaring and snapping at the heels are the Z generation, chomping at the bit for the Millennials, just like we were with the Baby Boomers.

As a lot of the best, oldest, long term employees are beyond "Freedom 55" in both career success, perks, great stock investments by company matching growth.

Take for instance tonight with my 25 y/o Millennial daughter who has blessed me with her presence these past few months.

Before you get all worked up, start thinking madly, that you need to get on to social media yourself.

Before you panic and put up stupid pictures of yourself in a SUIT > you are NOT your job on social media, you are you.

Before you say nothing and by definition, nothing happens. Giving it up, snarling that it's a waste of time. Only people without jobs, have nothing to do all day, or get paid to be stupid online can be online.

Before you go all crazy about so many narcissistic well-known personalities online. Thinking that you don't know the world to know what you think by TWEETING it or SHARE what you eat on INSTAGRAM.

Before you go all narcissistic online. People who blab about what they are thinking are more than a minuscule of whom the worlds' audience pays attention to.

Before you stop jumping on board. People are getting ahead of the game, taking charge of their online name. Yes, some develop a following.

Most people categorize and lump in their online reputation with their career, life, morals, belief in person presence. An inability to see how one is more powerful than the other?

What people see about you online is what is perceived. What is perceived quickly catapults into reputation which is presented online.

What I'm saying is there is a little bit of secret sauce. That is your tribe: a group of followers whom exchange connections across all the platforms out there: blending Linked In career platform with Twitter news to sharing Pinterest to communicating Facebook to visualizing on Instagram.

The more, the better, the advised.

You may sternly be rigid and not very personable. People could find you intimidating because you never crack a smile. Yet your fellow frat boys know how outrageous your humor can be. Use that whit and humor that David Letterman perfected in his conversational style. Emulate that in your own style. Put out your opinions. Test your theories.

Your style and reputation will evolve. Bill & Melinda Gates are transforming philanthropy crossed over from technology which has only one or two objectives: helping eradicate immunity globally; Bill Gore is forever immortalized by "THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH" thanks mostly to social media. Those who care about the world have had this vibe for 10 years or more while it was all in its formative young years.

Those who are interested in technology form a unit that I call a tribe. They gravitate towards each other, sometimes do to the algorithm tango that some sites actually have and promote. The wise take the hint and follow some, even if not all. You know you're fine tuning their numbers so that it is just what you want.

Don't be a shell. Hiding behind your personal career, steering your ship in a disciplined, focused manner. Some hide behind rude behavior, in denial that it will never be uncovered.

Share what makes you feel good. Comment if it made you inspired. Share images or quotes that resonate from your soul. Quote from the Bible or Q'uran if that is your best source. Whatever that makes you smile. Smear out the faces of children to protect their identity. Ask permission when you take a smartphone snap it it may be shared.

The main thing is get out there. The world is much better. At your fingertips. Evolving your inner self. Shining in authenticity. A positive force.

Who is the influence?

It doesn't matter whether you are an individual, an identity (music), or brand, you can carefully craft your audience based on who resonates the most with you.

Something I discovered lately: the masters of algorithms like GOOGLE, TWITTER, LINKED IN are identifying content creators as the next big influence wave.

Maybe I had that hunch 10 years ago. I recognized how important it was to establish an identity that could be synonymous with brand. There was no question who was behind the brand. It would develop a following because of integrity and authenticity.

I wrote early on, that I was putting a lot of my apples on the GOOGLE cart. It seemed logical that the super power of information > GOOGLE SEARCH > was going to lead the pack.

If you compare that to TESLA and ELON MUSK, then we're missing the point.

The strongest voice, the most authentic voice, and the voice that resonates with the majority of people online are going to be the most powerful disruptions.

These entities are corporations with investors and shareholders that demand a return on their investment. Fast. No hassle.

I've watched both Facebook and Twitter evolve as they tried to drift away from a social network to becoming a viable tech stock.

The secret to longevity is going to be who lasts.

What has happened with these two startups with imposter's syndrome is they forgot the main course.

In launching any new venture, you have to be able to answer, unequivocally, succinctly, resolutely

Who is your customer?
The ship can sail once you've anchored that

Most companies mistakenly steer the ship towards shareholders and miss the wind for their sails.

Okay, then let me ask:

Who did you have in mind when you created it?

We should all be well-versed on Steve Jobs' and Bill Gates philosophies, however, the main opportunity they uncovered was looking at who their customers were and what was available to them, and make something better, easier.

My point is that Twitter and Facebook did exactly that:

Forgot who the customers is

The idea that resonated to allow either to grow was the adopters, users, and spreaders of word-of-mouth (still the most effective way of spreading good ... or bad news). Social Media just trumped it up on steroids and removed barriers by beliefs, geographic location, race, culture, love interests.

As a consumer and marketing intern, it is not surprising to see the numbers.

They tell the story.

Once Facebook and Twitter tried to become corporations, they fell down the rabbit hole because they forgot who got them there to begin with.

One just has to watch not even 5 minutes of Facebook's Zuckenberg interviews in the US, and you just can't help but get the sense of a really lucky genius idea run by someone still in High School. Someone who ignores advice or heeds wisdom from others.

The baby shoes is starting something.

The first steps is becoming an economical climate or environment with a loyal following who have trust that they have your best interests at heart.

FACEBOOK abuse of trust is a story of "how to get away with privacy infiltration".

I'm still there: it is still one of the best homes to my loyal tribe. I haven't cut off my nose to spite my face by deleting myself there. I did remove the side, personal one as I wanted to focus the energy on only a few areas.

TWITTER abuse of power is a story where they are now trying to dictate who and who cannot be on their platform. What is acceptable in their terms are not necessarily good for its users. PURGING, SUSPENDING accounts would be an example.

ONCE users start to lose the glimmer then the answer to who the customer is becomes realized: the users, members, audience and clicks determine the outcomes now. What is becoming more suspect is the usual technology trick of try me, test me, but if you want this or that THAT IS better it will cost you.

That's a failed business plan
The one where shareholder price or value is where they determine the executive board's ROI return on investment of the CEO and whether they stand behind mostly him (less than 10% of executives on Fortune 500 are women).

Team work makes the dreams work

When you are collaborating on a team, use  technology and tools.  For example:

*Messenger ~ Group or team where everyone shows available or in meeting, a conference call, whatever yet many people multi-tasks; tip: if you are presenting facts, your team can be on standby during an online presentation, having your back, everyone sings from the same song sheet

*SHAREPoint: Meeting Minutes, Agenda, Attendance, Next Steps, Pending, Approval Processes, Process maps, org charts, roles/responsibility, defined permissions; deadlines; completion - can evolve as "Best Practices" or "Case Studies"

*INTRAnet: internal site should be slick, informative, updated frequently, avoid only blog from CEO, leadership commendations, success stories and recommendations constantly updated; include stock price, stock movements, industry news, customer awards or partnerships or vendor changes

*INTERNAL social site: focus on ideas or improvement or brainstorming, opinions or questions. ENSURE it is not next-tier supervisors who stalk people by making their presence known by answering the question or asking for clarification to a direct report~subtle form of intimidation is what that reeks of

*CRMs Customer Relationship Management systems that aid collaboration and avoids the customer having to tell the same story over and over and over again before the same person becomes accountable, does the follow up, and checks with customer on satisfaction - it could generate an email to the customer account manager - which would generate a personal call requirement - which is monitored by sales managers during weekly one-on-ones to avoid gaps or gaping holes

*GROUP Screen Share Pages work really well when sharing the screen with others visualizes and emphasizes.  Group sharing is effective when the presenter is using power point slides and often allow comments as chat in boxes;  it works wonder on collaboration and problem solving.

*TELECONFERENCE CALLS should be scheduled weekly or monthly with consistency, agenda sent out beforehand (or posted on SharePoint or Intranet Site), confirming attendance, a note taker or minutes scribe.  When used with other share technology, it can be very effective, especially among remote workers, consultants, project managers, HR, training, etc. 

Because of the foregoing selection, you may decide against a video conference call which limits multitasking and can be awkward or intimidating.  (My opinion)

NOTE:  If you are screen sharing, turn off your MESSENGER and email notifications as they distract viewers.

ENSURE everyone has an opportunity to speak:  round table works well.

TABLE discussions that are going sideways.  SCHEDULE side discussions or move to the next call's agenda, depending upon priority.

ENSURE the facilitator is organized.  That's what Agendas are for and even stronger when time allotment is noted.

ENGAGEMENT is really being interested in the person or entity you are following.
Asking what appeared to me as an obvious question, is a way to remember who you follow, their quirks or academia or business savvy or political views or commentary.

Hi John,

Hope all is well.

Unfortunately, one of our hoses inside the cement wall split and we have a flood in our basement on our hands. When the representative from INTACT, A*****, came by on Friday your ears may have been ringing as I was singing your praises and she asked me to send your contact information -- I will only do that with your permission.

You and your bride should stop by for coffee over the next few days -- so you can meet Rob and I can see the foundation behind the business - your wife :o)

I think you may want to consider a winter business: reclamation and fix up after property damage: aka basement floods. You are a very strong communicator and efficient project manager -- so even if business is slow during the winter months, you could help fix others' disasters. Similarly, to your roofing business, you don't do the work yourself, you just tee up the right people since you have the right processes already in place: quoting/proposals that are very comprehensive and leave no questions what it covers or gaps where interpretation can run amok.

The company whom the insurance company forwarded as their preferred vendor (they will not guarantee any others if you use your own company) .... well, basically, they are a joke. I hadn't begun working with their guy (aka company but is all the company and its reputation upon staking who they put in front of their customers and your guy or their gal. I really think INTACT will like your style: professional & representing your own services, acting as your own sales representative and then customer service (pre- and post-work), supply chain, personnel, etc. falling under your own responsibility as though your word is your golden sword: it is solid.

That's what is missing in this fiasco with the insurance companies' "preferred vendor" is Bahn Projects (good thing you didn't limit your name when you chose your company name, someone visionary could see that as a no brainer and build able upon without limiting potential).

I will forward your email to A***** so you may connect, and even get on as a PREFERRED VENDOR because you GUARANTEE your work and stand by your team - great leadership and entrepreneurial talent -- best of all, you know your numbers: you know how many man hours it is going to take to do a roof, add/source the materials to do the work plus an administrative markup, per industry standards, take pictures and provide diagrams in your elegant, professional proposal.

You've done your homework: you know how your competition works, or how the industry tends to behave, and just brought it up many notches with your class, intelligence and personable character ::... people CAN TRUST you in doing what you say, when you say it, in the manner you describe, at the cost estimated, minus any surprises since you are the ultimate professional expert in your field of service. I hope INTACT will hire you as the golden ticket to continue to grow your business, upon the foundation of your TRUSTWORTHINESS.

To help your business build credibility and set failure aside, you've followed THE GOLDEN RULE :[ treat others as you wish to be treated ] as well as IN YOUR WORD others can trust.

A fantastic site for art projects you can do with kids as a parent or grandparent. Step-by-step instructions. Or, as a teacher: pick an art project the kids work on while you read something to them. My Grade 5 Teacher, Mr. Quigg, did that when I lived and went to school in Germany. We didn't fidget, distract each other we were rapt by the narrative of The Hobbit while we were gobsmacked by our own creations. I was often chosen to read to the class, my articulation developed early. A budding leader in the making. I'm not sure that is what Mr. Quigg saw. It was probably just obvious: the kids would listen better if it was from one of their own.

When I look back 40 years.

Since I graduated from High School in 1979.

Thrust into the 80s without any choice.

Those graduating with pending career jobs, had them revoked at the 11th hour.

Ronald Regan was in the American White House and Pierre Trudeau Canada's Premiere.

One of the most untold business stories that I still recall, was when the airline aviation navigators went on strike or threatened a strike, I don't remember. (Will need to fact-check)

It was power or might.

The government trying to bust up a powerful union and force them to go back to work.

A lesson of how stubborn man|woman can be when defending their position. We just act differently.

Flash forward to 2020.

20/20 yes.

It is clear.

The state of the world can be communicated by the state of the airline industry.

That is just my opinion.

Looking back to the early 1980s, there were hijacks and embassy ambushes, health uncertainty because of AIDS, a recession with negative growth.

Then there were the Cinderella stories.

Certainly Apple and MicroSoft top the list. So does Wayne Gretzky, the greatest hockey player to ever lace skates on.

A lot of airlines went under in the 1980s.

Economy carriers started to emerge. The BIG airlines were flailing.

Look at now: with Boeing's scarred reputation and dismal ratings.

2020 and the next decade about to become, will continue to be marked through aviation. Of the galactic kind.

Short sighted cost savings

I wrote this quite a long time ago.
I discovered it in my DRAFT folder.
I'm going to guess it was five years ago.

So the big not so big news is that Hewlett Packard (HP) laid off a bunch more people. It has had a cloud over its head been leaking money for such a long time, most people aren't all that shocked. Especially, those that had worked for the company during its good times, stayed loyal during its rocky times, fell victim to restructuring after restructuring and finally leaving out of exasperation or let go.

The following excerpt was pulled from my Google search as the first to share the news: Pacific Coast Business Times.

Hewlett-Packard is laying off 25,000 to 30,000 employees globally as part of a restructuring program that will save the company $2.7 billion per year.

HP announced the layoffs on Sept. 15 at a meeting of its securities analysts. The cuts represent about 10 percent of HP’s workforce of about 302,000. It wasn’t immediately clear how the restructuring would affect HP’s office in Goleta.

In September of 2014, HP bought Goleta-based Eucalyptus, which focuses on developing open source cloud technology that interacts with commercial systems from Amazon and others.

Terms of the sale were not announced at the time, but Bloomberg estimated it was around $100 million. The company now operates as HP Eucalyptus.

The timing of the sale last year was odd, given that HP was creating a massive restructuring plan. HP announced plans to lay off 55,000 people in April, which saved the company about $2 billion. Of those, about 54,000 people have been laid off so far in North America.

An HP spokesman said the cuts will eliminate the need for any further restructuring, but declined to comment further.

It is a sad story indeed. Once the goliath of technology and innovation, it may be more remembered as how bad things can happen to great companies.

1. It had lost its identity. HP, in my opinion, forgot what the magic was: the mainstay being printers hosted at most desktops, whether personal or business multifunctional.

Scott was reportedly behind a ban on typewriters at Apple, fired 40Apple employees and is quoted as saying (shortly after firing half theApple II team):

1981 to 1983 – Mike Markkula

Mike Markkula became an investor in Apple – providing it with $250,000 ($80,000 as an equity investment in the company and $170,000 as a loan) – also becoming its third employee in 1977.

As CEO, he helped to market the first two Apple computers, providing the company with credit and venture capital. He originally said that he would remain at Apple for four years but stayed longer, serving as chairman from 1985 until 1997, when a new board was formed after Jobs returned to the company.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak reportedly credits Markkula for the success of Apple more than himself, despite the fact Wozniak single-handedly built the company’s first two computers.

In 1985 Markkula took sided with other Apple execs to have Steve Jobs ousted from the company.

1983 to 1993 – John Sculley

A former PepsiCo CEO, John Sculley was brought to Apple to use his marketing skills to help the company sell computers.

Sculley is well-known for his disagreements with Steve Jobs, who in 1985 began to lose control of his teams, leading Sculley and other top executives to strip him of all operational responsibilities.

However his strategy as CEO saw Apple incur in high engineering, manufacturing, and marketing costs, with its products causing market confusion. He led the company to utilise PowerPC chips, later admitting he should have gone with the more popular Intel processors at the time.

unfortunately for Sculley, Condé Nast Portfolio ranked Sculley as the 14th worst American CEO of all time.

1993 to 1996 – Michael Spindler

Nicknamed “The Diesel”, Michael Spindler worked his way up through the ranks in Apple’s European operations, becoming Apple Europe’s President, replacing John Sculley as CEO in 1993.

Spindler is credited with the failure of the Newton and the Copland operating system, but also reported to have led takeover discussions with IBM, Sun and Philips, before his replacement in 1996.

1996 to 1997 – Gil Amelio

Gil Amelio was the CEO of National Semiconductor before joining Apple in 1996, despite already being on the company’s Board of Directors.

Amelio helped to overturn the company’s low quality products and introduced Mac OS 8, buying Steve Jobs’ NeXT for $429 million. Within a year, Apple’s stock slumped to a 12 year low, leading to Amelio losing his job, after Steve Jobs convinced directors to cut the CEO.

1997 to 2011 (with exceptions) – Steve Jobs

Named as the interim CEO of Apple in 1997, Jobs’ main aim was to make the company profitable again. He cut numerous projects, leading staff to fear being in an isolated location with him for fear of being fired.

The new CEO helped create Mac OS X, introducing the iMac and other new products before he took the official position as CEO in 2000.

Jobs was behind the iPod, the release of the iTunes music service and the iPhone. Not satisfied with innovating the mobile phone, Jobs helped create the iPad tablet and began making the Mac brand of computers sleeker, sexier and smaller.

Jobs announced his retirement on August 24 2011, stating that he believed he was unable to fulfil the role that was expected of him.

2011 – Present : Tim Cook

Taking over from Steve Jobs as of today, Tim Cook is known for being a calm, collected and quiet man, quite unlike the very animated style of his predecessor. Although his work style is fairly intensive to the point that he is often described as a “workaholic”.

This is not the first time that Cook has served as Apple CEO, having stepped into the breach during recent times that Steve Jobs has taken medical leave.

So, what are your thoughts on what is going on at HP? I've got a blog started on this a couple of weeks ago, but I found myself stumbling a bit writing. It is so sad to see such a great company stifle itself by its own size and self-importance, disregarding the years of some of its so many dedicated employees, asked to accept changes by the minute or hour, instead of the day, week, month or year. In PM for ADS, I'd say 80% (conservatively) have left. Another poor example of offshoring jobs to people that culturally don't understand what it means to be in a fraternity of brothers and sisters who love what the company stands for and what outsiders opinions matter. I'm seeing it live again with my current organization. Sadly, it isn't something that anyone within a political correct context can express. Gently move that issue aside, and people would be accused of intolerance, bias and racial judgement. Maybe, I'll eventually become a decent writer when I get the courage to speak about what needs to be said but most are too afraid to say. Unless you are on CNN eh?

I simply am not surprised. Having experienced HP's brutal management style it's easy to believe that this type of behavior goes all the way to the top. For every great manager, there are a dozen abrasive assholes who manage by insults. Bigger is never better. I can't think of one example where bigger is better for the shareholder, consumer and employees,simultaneously.So HP is no different. For some reason they felt they could grow into a power house and get respect in the industry. They just became a enormous non player. But that isn't a surprise either. Sure, I have compassion for some of the good employees there. But lets face it. It wasn't a very collaborative environment and most people didn't have the balls to stand up to all the bull shit decisions being made on a daily basis. I have never worked for such a combative company in my life - I really don't have anything good to say about the company at all. But I am an out-of-the-box solutions provider - I was never going to fit in. And you are the same - you're a creative mind who always challenges the status quo - you seek better all the time. So you weren't a good fit either. Sorry.

Ironic how when we both started out together in those first few days together, drawn to the same conclusion that there was a dark cloud over HP when we were so smitten and proud to have been chosen to work there. Call it sixth sense or just smarts, we both could tell all was not well in HP. My clue was being changed managers three times at least before we both reported under Storta, while you watched me moved around, like trying to follow the hockey puck on a televised game eh? It would be easy to just blame Daniel or John as his henchman, but it was merely a dysfunction within a greater dysfunctional organization. I should have paid closer attention to Donna when she was honestly saying how differently Canadians do things, eventually it was my downfall because Storta had no idea how different things were and should have impacted the metrics. I'm not bitter, more reflective. I don't go out of my way to read up on HP, it happened to fall on my radar. Admittedly, I cast my web wide to grab what is happening in the world, not just in business. At the same time, I read about Netflix's paternity leave program for fathers which was revolutionary. Honestly, I try to share interesting things on social media to continue to build my online reputation .... eventually it will surmount into something worthwhile. Until then, if it stays that way I don't mind, it is a nice hobby that fills my thirst for knowledge. If you don't mind, I may pull what you wrote in a blog if I do get around to writing it ... it would be anonymous without any reference by name. I'm still debating whether I'll use the actual name. That has been my usual practice, not naming names but hints biggest enough that those inquisitive enough or in the know, will recognize who I am talking about.

Off shoring is the way that all the big providers are surviving - where expertise and money is being sent off shore and on shore personal are loosing their jobs. All companies to gain value in the stock market have to show grow, and growing by acquisition filled the greed of the stock market for a while. Hp has been off shoring for years, their huge complexes in California are shells as manufacturing was move off shore years ago..

Information is on everyone's fingertips.  The power to exploit information majorly huge.

What people share is the currency.

It doesn't matter whether it is based on fact.

If it appeals to others, shared with a tribe of followers who it resonates with, it can and will likely be re-shared, commented upon or liked.

LIKE Is a bigger endorsement now.

KEY to currency.

A person or entity do not have to follow an identity, be represented by a person, company, brand or method.  

The ability to attrack clicks is where it's at and will distinguish between real influencers (those that are trusted with a loyal following who trust clicking on the content, it to be sincere, thought-provoking or inspiring).

That is the next decade's currency.

Predicted back in 2010:  that content would be king.

I began watching CNN's portrayal of the political drama constantly unfolding in America's governing Amendments advocates.  THAT turned out to be fairly obvious leaning towards Hilary Clinton, and anything Trump was filled with ridicule or scorn.

I perplexed over Anderson Cooper.

My senses told me he was in a downward spiral.

Abusing drugs or facing addictions.

My bet:  alcohol.

Alcohol.

From prohibition to acceptance.

I ask why?

Enter weed.

Legalization.

Acceptance.

Considered the "gateway" drug to all else.

At 58, I resisted during the 1970s period of experimentation. To 2020 where it is legally and a way to take some of the heat off.

Keep your sanity

I recommend you start out, or continue posting on what you know about. It is the easiest way to launch your vibe. It lets people know what you are all about. Similar-minded folks tend to gravitate and find each other.
I'm not talking about race, status, education, love interest, career, notoriety, controversy, religion or beliefs. Be about you!

I interviewed with a real executive a few months ago. The hairs on my arms are fluffy but they still stood up. My spidey senses were on full alert. Usually, it indicates a strong sense of doing well in the interview.

I got a charge out of the interview. Especially a humane chief executive officer. I walked away thinking that I REALLY wanted to work for this gentleman. As often is the disciplined case, I had scoped out the website on the company, scooping tidbits of information as an overview of the company. I had not examined anything at my disposal to check out the man whom I was interviewing with. Dumb, I know. I did do the usual of adding the person on to LINKED IN so that I could see what kind of career they had, not academics, but real experience being key. His fit in with 99.9% of all the other CEOs: bland.

The more I think about it, the more he didn't measure up in person. Yet in practice, he is exactly that. Someone who can easily be identified as unique, in a very crowded world. I think that's what made me take exceptional notice and do a little bit more digging afterwards.

The intellect was apparent, what was said was insightful while calm. The authenticity was classy and firm.

What he presented, was a shambles. It screamed inside: he needs me! He really needs to clean up his act. Not that he is doing anything harmful or addictive, unless you consider his +Instagram posts: a very fit man, dedicated to mountain biking, cycling, and being put to the test.

Why, I wonder, would his @Twitter profile indicate that he is sarcastic and opinionated? Apparently, that is the view he wants others to see him. When I started out on social media, there were so many of those types: loud, obnoxious and opinionated.

Probably, 10 years ago this March (2020), when I joined Twitter, super sarcastic personalities were the norm to shoot up on the stratosphere, being catapulted to online super stardom. So often, the real person couldn't measure up.

Some folks still stand out. One was a professional DJ, on the radio, homed off the west coast, he used his personality, his advocacy and his philanthropy to the max on Twitter to fill his local food bank. He certainly didn't make any money off of his efforts. Ending up in a city across Canada, doing what he knew best: being a DJ. I see the number of followers he has. They are certainly impressive. However, not indicative of how much he has used the internet to spread good cheer and bring something back to those in need.

Pay it forward

Evolved from acts of kindness on social media. Those who inform others on whatever the imagination can conjure up: technology, science, environment, humanity, mental well being, health, beauty and knowledge. Giving to others in spirit, inspiration or motivation.

Humanitarian causes, issues, controversies are the new norm. Not the obnoxious, they've mostly moved on to You Tube to rant and rave: very conducive to reposting videos, and a word for the wise.

This blog has evolved over the last 10 years. The topics dispersed on spin off blogs. In fact, when I tried to consolidate them, I got comments about how scattered and I had a blog for just that: when I wanted to meander about something.

When I was at my peak performance in sales:  winning awards ..... my desk was a big huge blob of paper.

When I became a leader, I kept my desk sparse and turned off all devices when someone came to me with a problem.

When I took a job to pay the bills:  I ensured I was surrounded by art:  art of beaches, boats or light hearted sayings to keep me motivated.

People need to stop trying to be a square peg in a round hole.  You are you and your desk habits are your own: 

* pristine (conveys no nonsense efficiency)

* cluttered paper bomb (disorganized scatter head)

* lively & personal (keeping things light & disassociate from surroundings)

When in fact:

* spotless can mean you are organized and efficient

* a MESS says: whatever you're doing is more important

* tasteful art and super slogans means you are balanced
