Reliable IR temperature measurement in extreme conditions

Berlin, 25 January 2012. The ratio pyrometer optris CTratio 1M is designed for non-contact measurement of temperatures in the range between 700°C and 1800°C. Its functional principle guarantees precise measurements even when the field of view is severely occluded, for example by fumes. This makes it highly useful for applications in harsh environments as they prevail in the metal and glass industries.

With the CTratio 1M, Optris has added a ratio pyrometer with fibre optic cable to its high-performance series. The measuring instrument is used especially in ambient temperatures up to 250°C where the measuring head requires no cooling. In contrast to traditional connections, the optical multi-fibre cables used here comprise multiple interwoven glass fibres. This makes the fibre highly break-resistant, so that the pyrometer can be installed in difficult-to-access areas and maze-like production environments. Cables are deliverable in lengths up to 22 m to cover the majority of installation scenarios. Other advantages are the very fast response time of 5 ms and an integrated laser sight to mark the actual spot size.

Accurate measurements even in harshest industrial conditions

The functional principle of ratio pyrometry (i.e. measuring at two different infrared wavelengths) makes the pyrometer largely insensitive to dust, fumes and soiled sight glasses. This means that measurements remain accurate even when the degree of soiling of a sight glass exceeds 90 %. The pyrometer also delivers reliable measurements if the target object fills only 5 % of the spot size, or if it moves very rapidly. This reliability of the infrared sensor permits the implementation of process control and quality assurance even in the harshest of industrial environments. In the standard package, the measured values are output as analog data. Alternatively, six different digital interfaces are available (USB, RS232, RS485, CAN, Profibus DP, Ethernet).

The new optris PI400: Small IR camera, great resolution

Berlin, 22 November 2011. The newly developed optris PI400 nicely rounds off Optris GmbH’s family of online infrared cameras. The versions PI400 and PI450 have been introduced on the market to complement the firmly established PI160 and PI200.

Sized 56 x 46 x 90 mm, it is the smallest camera in its class, weighing in at only 320 g with its lens included! Moreover, this latest addition to the product portfolio of the Berlin-based company offers an excellent thermal sensitivity: 80 mK for the optris PI400 and 40 mK for the optris PI450.

Radiometric thermal images and infrared videos can be displayed and recorded at the full resolution of 382 by 288 pixels at a high measuring rate of 80 frames per second. Compared to the other IR cameras, this means that four times more pixels are available for the same target surface area. In combination with the appropriate lens assembly (with a 30° or 13° aperture), the camera thus permits more detailed measurements and widens the field of applications.

This rugged thermal imager (IP67/NEMA4) is ideally suited for use in R&D applications, in test stations or in automated industrial processes. With the availability of industrial grade accessories such as a cooling housing with mounting flange and a high-temperature USB cable, this camera can be implemented even in extremely harsh industrial conditions. A mounting foot, protective enclosure and angled connector are deliverable as optional items. The price of the basic optris PI400 model is € 4,950.

The camera package comprises the license-free optris PI Connect software. This software offers features for comprehensive analysis of thermal imagery, logging of data and integration with automated processes.

An optional extension of the USB cable length up to 10 km by fibre optic cable, the analog / digital process interface (PIF) on the camera and the open-source drivers for software integration via DLL, ComPort and LabVIEW facilitate the incorporation in networks and automated processes by system integrators.

Process integration of IR thermometers made easy

Berlin, 18 October 2011. Showcasing an innovative interface concept at the upcoming SPS/IPC/Drives exhibition in Nurnberg (Hall 4A, Booth 130), Berlin-based sensor manufacturer Optris will demonstrate how easily and quickly infrared thermometers can be integrated into automated systems.

All their infrared measuring devices which, in addition to the sensor head are also featuring a separate electronics box, implement multiple concepts for the interfacing with automation systems. Beside the analog interface there are no less than six digital interfaces to choose from. In this way, customers can select and install the interface which best suits their application and environmental conditions. All interfaces are bidirectional, allowing parameters to be both sent and received.

The temperature sensor can be connected to a network or controller using RS232, RS485, USB, CAN, Profibus DP or Ethernet. Specific measuring set-ups are required for example for measurements of various materials having different emissivities. This digital communication feature allows users to assign parameters easily. It also dispenses with the need for an A/D converter. Also, digital interfaces are able to bridge long distances, making installations much more flexible.

Users are offered the possibility to incorporate their own software through communication protocols provided by Optris. When the USB, RS232, RS485 or Ethernet interface is chosen, users can also install the optris Compact Connect software supplied with the sensor to record temperatures and to customise sensor settings.

Non-contact infrared thermometers are implemented in automated manufacturing processes within the glass, paper, plastics, automotive and metals industries, but also for quality assurance and maintenance purposes.

Contact:
Steffen Moeck · Tel.: +49 30 500 197 45 · E-Mail: steffen.moeck@optris.de

Reliable temperature measurement during heat treatment of metals

Berlin, 13 September 2011. Optris GmbH is already attending the Kolloquium für Wärmebehandlung, Werkstofftechnik, Fertigungs- und Verfahrenstechnik (HK 2011 – colloquium for heat treatment and materials, manufacturing and process engineering) in Wiesbaden, Germany to present its innovative temperature measurement devices for stationary and mobile applications. The industrial thermometers, thermal imaging cameras as well as practical application examples will be represented in hall 2, booth 214.

Optris offers the short-wave measuring IR thermometers with the wavelength identifier 1M, 2M and 3M for precise non-contact temperature measurement.
Due to the innovative, stationary 3M devices with a starting temperature of 50°C, the monitoring of metal and composites can now be achieved at close to room temperature.

Portable pyrometers such as the optris P20 1M / 2M are used e.g. in hardening shops where temperature measurements take place infrequently within performance- and time-based facilities. Should a large number of infrared measurement points be arranged (OEM-usage), the small and affordable stationary devices of the compact series, such as the optris CSmicro 2W 2M, can be used. The optris CSmicro 2W 2M measures temperatures from 385°C up to 1600°C. The display at the seperate electronic serves as a target help for the sensor adjustment as well as to show the condition of the pyrometer (e.g. overheating of the sensor).

A highlight of some of the stationary devices is the seperate electronic box. Therewith the devices can be implemented e.g. close to induction process without the interference of electromagnetic fields. The diverse options of the data output (digital/analog), the easy accessible programming keys as well as the intelligent display at the electronic box allow an easy integration of the devices into existing and proposed facilities.

Contact:
Longina Becken · Tel.: +49 30 500 197 21· E-Mail: longina.becken@optris.de

Camera combines thermal image with visual image for the first time

Berlin, 05 July 2011. The Optris GmbH continues the market introduction of a new, extensive infrared camera series with the introduction of the optris PI200 thermal imaging camera with BI-SPECTRAL technology.

“The new BI-SPECTRAL technology integrates two established camera technologies in one stationary device. Through a visual camera, the optris PI200 is able to combine the conventional thermal image with a visual one. Thereby, both images are displayed in real time and are being recorded for eventual analysis.” informs managing director Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kienitz.

The integrated combination of a visual image (VIS) and a thermal image (IR) via one single stationary camera is a significant step in the development of imaging temperature measurement systems. The optris PI200 will be applicable in areas where so far CCD cameras and thermal imaging cameras were used separately. Examples are the installation in storage pits and open spaces for early fire detection, at convoyer belts for temperature control of bulk material or within production processes for visual and thermal documentation.

The optris PI200 thermal imaging camera displays infrared images with up to 96 Hz (images per second) with 160x120 pixels. The time synchronic real time image recording takes place with up to 32 Hz with 640 x 480 pixels. The free available full version of the optris PI Connect software offers two modes for the image display: the monitoring modus and the cross-fading modus. The monitoring modus offers an easy orientation at the point of measurement with the separate display of both images. The cross-fading modus highlights critical temperatures through the overlaid display of the images.

With a size of only 45 x 45 x 62 mm³, the optris PI200 follows the design of the established optris PI160.
Infrared thermometer combines minimised electronic with innovative LED display

Berlin, 22 June 2011. Optris GmbH introduces the new optris CSmicro series from which especially OEM customers will benefit according to the great product potential of these infrared thermometers. The improved price-performance-ratio supports the integration of the devices within OEM solutions and the simultaneous operation of the measurement devices at several infrared measuring points.

The usage of the compact pyrometers within the automotive area is versatile. The infrared thermometers can be included within e.g. mobile paint dryers for temperature control or during laminating and welding process of plastic parts to ensure a constant process and quality monitoring.

The innovative temperature sensors cover a temperature range from -40°C to 1600°C and are available with the new, innovative LED display. The display at the seperate electronic serves as a target help for the sensor adjustment as well as to show the condition of the pyrometer (e.g. overheating of the sensor). Additionally, a visual alarm can take place parallel to the new alarm output at the device (open collector). A temperature code indication completes the innovative concept.

The electronic is located within the cable of all infrared thermometers of the new optris CSmicro series. The electronic consists of a size of only 31x12 mm and was reduced by 25%. Moreover, Optris sets new benchmarks regarding the size and robustness of the sensing heads within the area of industrial infrared thermometers. The miniaturized sensing heads are developed for the use in cramped and small surroundings. The robust, superior design allows the operation with temperatures up to 180°C without cooling. This benefit accounts to a reduction of cost for mechanical installations.

The pyrometer of the optris CSmicro series offer additionally to the in industry widely used analog two-wire interface (4-20 mA current loop) the possibility of sending digital data via an USB interface to a connected PC. Beside a temperature recording via the integration of this sensor into the optris CompactConnect software a complete programming and remote setup can be done.

For more information please visit the product site of the optris CSmicro LT.

Contact:
Longina Becken · Tel.: +49 30 500 197 21· E-Mail: longina.becken@optris.de

Infrared line camera of Optris as software solution

During the 7th special exhibition “Berührungslose Messtechnik” (non-contact temperature measurement) of the Fraunhofer-Allianz Vision at this years Control in Stuttgart, Optris will introduce the innovative linescanner-function of the optris PI Connect software in hall 1, booth 1612.

“The extensive analysis software optris PI Connect is delivered with each of our optris PI infrared camera”, informs managing director Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kienitz.“Besides other functions, the optris PI Connect software has an innovative linescanner mode which can be used for displaying and reliably monitoring continuous processes.

”The IR line camera is primarily used for non-contact temperature measurement at moving objects, especially if the optical path to the object is limited. The linescanner is installed for the measurement of bulk material on conveyor belts, such as carbon. A temperature monitoring at hot spots is taking place as blaze nests can lead to fire.

The linescanner-function conducts temperature measurement in one line with up to 200 pixels and displays those as a thermal image with unlimited quantity of lines. The opening angle of the camera is 60° with a wide-angle lens and can capture wide objects or conveyor belts. The camera finds ideal use in fast processes as it consists of 120 Hz (pictures per second).

The set up of the linescanner-function takes place through the optris PI Connect software. After defining the position of the line within the thermal image – the optris PI is here used as a direction help – the configuration of the functionality takes place. The number of displayed lines can be defined or the definition of a trigger signal for the automatic thermal image saving. Finally the definition of the individual layout takes place such as the display of saved images in the snapshot history.

Small, fast, precise – Thermal imager of Optris

Berlin, 17 February 2011. Optris GmbH introduces the second generation of the optris PI thermal imager during this year Hannover Messe in hall 11, booth A48. The camera is now equipped with a complete new detector which leads to improvements of the measurement device.

“The new generation of detectors allow the measurement of smallest objects within the range of µm“, underlines managing director Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kienitz. “Thermal images can now be displayed with 120 Hz – one picture every 8 ms - due to an ideal signal processing.“

The optris PI is based on a new, small detector with 160 x 120 pixel. The detector allows a better local resolution of the device under test. Thermal processes of very small objects starting from 50 µm can be presented, such as smallest SMD components at function tests. Precise measurements can be performed starting from a size of 0.5 mm. Exchangeable high precision lenses allow adjustment of the measurement distance and object size.

The stationary infrared camera is connected to a computer via USB2.0 and can be operated immediately after connection. The computer software optris PI Connect represents the temperature merits with up to 120 Hz (8 ms per picture). Measurement results can be captured, analysed afterwards and filed as snap shots or video sequences.

The optris PI is one of the world’s smallest thermal imager (size: 45 x 45 x 62 mm) and weighs 250 gram including the lens and cable. The camera is used in combination with a Tablett-PC as a mobile device and thereby closes the cap between portable infrared snap shot cameras and pure stationary devices.

Contact:
Longina Becken · Tel.: +49 30 500 197 21· E-Mail: longina.becken@optris.de

New, smart infrared thermometer optris CS LT

Berlin, 8 December 2010. Optris GmbH reacts to the growing demand within the low-price market segment of infrared thermometers for non-contact temperature measurement with the enhancements of the optris CS LT.

“Due to a regular exchange with our customers, we are able to adjust our products, such as the optris CS LT, continuously to the requirements of the market” informs managing director Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kienitz. „Through the enhancement of the optris CS LT, the thermometer now consists of improved parameters such as a greater temperature range up to 1030°C. With the implementation of the intelligent LED display concept, we have also been able to introduce innovative ideas for the low-price market segment.“

Due to its outstanding cost-performance-ratio, the optris CS LT finds use in OEM solutions and for the infrared monitoring of large plants with a multitude of measuring points e.g. for maintenance (electrical and mechanical plant equipment with difficult access) or as part of the machinery and plant engineering (temperature monitoring within production processes).

The optris CS LT offers an additional, one-of-a-kind improvement: the intelligent LED display. On the one hand site, the display can be used as a target help and on the other hand site to show the condition of the device via the LED self-diagnosis (e.g. overheating of the sensor). Additionally, a visual alarm can take place parallel to the new alarm output at the device (open collector). A temperature code indication completes the innovative concept.

An additional innovation is the “ambient derating“ function. At Optris, the optris CS LT is calibrated at different ambient temperatures at a black body. During applications at the customers, the sensor also measures the ambient temperature and takes this into consideration when measuring the temperature. Therefore, the dependency of the temperature measurement for e.g. changing ambient temperatures can be reduced and reliable datas can be guaranteed.

The improved infrared thermometer allows temperature measurements within a great range between -40°C and 1030°C. The measurement device can also be used in surroundings of up to 80°C without additional cooling due to high temperature resistance. The optical resolution of the product has been enhanced to 15:1 and the response time to 25 ms.

The measurement device has also been improved regarding friendliness towards customers. Temperature ranges to be measured within the application are scalable through the analogue output as a voltage signal (mV). The specification for emissivity values and alarm threshold within automated processes can be carried out synchronically via the supply voltage for single or simultaneous for multiple sensors.

Contact:
Longina Becken · Tel.: +49 30 500 197 21· E-Mail: longina.becken@optris.de

More precise and faster infrared thermometers from Optris

Berlin, 8 October 2010. The steady and innovative development of the product range of Optris GmbH results in the introduction of the enhanced infrared thermometers.

“We are proud to be able to adjust our products to the needs of the market due to our internal research department“, states managing director Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kienitz. “We now have one of the smallest, more precise and faster infrared sensor in the world by improving our optris CTfast LT´s optical resolution to 25:1 and the response time to only 6 ms.“

Product improvements also took place regarding the optris CSmicro LT and the optris CSmicro 2W; besides the optris CTfast LT. This allows fulfilling the increasing requirements of non-contact temperature measurement technique even better. The devices can be used within the plastic industry for applications such as deep-drawing and thermoforming of foils, laminating and drying of surfaces or welding of plastic parts.

The infrared thermometers optris CTfast LT, optris CSmicro LT and optris CSmicro 2W LT are measuring temperatures ranges between -50°C and 975°C. The optical resolution of the devices is improved to 25:1 (CTfast LT) and 15:1 (CSmicro LT, CSmicro 2W LT). The sensors are faster than ever due to the new response times of 6 ms and 30 ms.

Optris sets new benchmarks regarding the size and robustness of the sensing heads within the area of industrial infrared thermometers. The miniaturized sensing heads are developed for the use in cramped and small surroundings and are suited for small apparatus and engine construction. The very advantageous cost-performance ratio supports the integration within OEM solutions and the operation of the devices at multiple infrared measurement areas.

The measurement devices offer a unique advantage regarding the installation within hot surroundings. The robust, superior design allows the operation with temperatures up to 120°C without cooling. This benefit accounts to a reduction of cost for mechanical installations.

Contact:
Longina Becken · Tel.: +49 30 500 197 21· E-Mail: longina.becken@optris.de

New two-wire infrared thermometer optris CSlaser

The Optris GmbH is expanding the product range of infrared thermometers: the new compact high performance IR thermometer optris CSlaser for temperature measurements from -50°C to 1600°C.

Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kienitz, managing director of Optris GmbH informs: “The infrared thermometers of this new performance class are used for temperature measurements in wide ranges of the manufacturing industry on the product, on the machine or on the tool. More and more OEM are realizing these sensors as an essential part of their machine where the temperature control of smallest objects matters.

Opposite to many conventional pyrometers with single laser, which are only marking the center and not the real size of the measuring spot, the CSlaser comes with an innovative double sighting laser. Both of the beams are following exactly the infrared-optical path and marking exactly the real spot size at any distance. Wrong measurements will be avoided. The smallest spot of 0,5mm (2M model) is reached on the CSlaser at the cross point of both laser beams at 150mm. A variety of different focus versions allows an adaptation to the current installation circumstances.

The CSlaser will be offered initially in two spectral ranges: LT for universal measurement tasks up to 975°C with 50:1 optical resolution and 2M for all temperature measurements up to 1600°C of metals, secondary metal processing, metal oxides and ceramic materials with 300:1 optical resolution. The short measuring wave length of 1,6µm reduces errors of temperature readings on surfaces with low or unknown emissivity or with changing emissivity during the process which happens often on metal surfaces.

Additionally to the in industry widely used analog two-wire interface (4-20 mA current loop) the CSlaser offers also the possibility of sending digital data via an USB interface to a connected PC. Beside a temperature recording via the integration of this sensor into the CompactConnect software a complete programming and remote setup can be done.

The CSlaser is dimensioned for the wide supply voltage range of 5-28 V; the terminal connections are short circuit and polarity reversal protected. The emissivity can be adjusted directly on the unit as well as via software. The additional alarm output (open collector, 0-30V, 500mA) is a product feature which is seldom found on two wire sensors.

The sensor is usable up to 85°C ambient temperature without cooling and automatic laser switch off at 50°C. Optional available cooling accessories allow a problem-free use at higher ambient temperatures.

The technology company Optris GmbH is specialized in the development, production and sales of noncontact infrared thermometers. The product range comprises online sensors, portable pyrometers as well as infrared cameras and calibration sources.

Contact:
Longina Becken · Tel.: +49 30 500 197 21· E-Mail: longina.becken@optris.de
