The Fort Gallery is pleased to present Vancouver-based artist Jenny Hawkinson’s new exhibition Beyond Barrier, opening July 3. In a world that is often bitterly divided—from border walls to partisan politics—Hawkinson’s multimedia artworks extend gentleness and humanity to these conversations. Hawkinson painstakingly embroiders graffiti text found in her Downtown Eastside neighborhood onto lace handkerchiefs and creates rubbings from words collected on the streets of London. She wallpapers the gallery with hand-pulled prints of fences and lace—challenging the viewer to consider what divides us.

Using materials and images from the domestic sphere—lace, embroidery, stitching—Hawkinson brings intimacy and personal connection to our most divisive social and political issues. In the midst of difference and division she asks us to consider how we might make a home together.

Beyond Barrier runs July 3-28 at the Fort Gallery. An opening reception will be held July 5th, 7-9pm. On July 26, 7-9pm, the gallery will host a concert with jazz musician Gord Edmunds. All are welcome to attend these events.

Learn to see as well as to draw, in scenic Crescent Beach while learning watercolour pencil techniques Monday Evenings from Jul. 8 – Aug. 26, Summer 2019

"Getting in touch with your inner nature by drawing from nature" – Study of natural environment is balanced with watercolour pencil sketching techniques using local pathways in scenic Crescent Beach. Participants learn to accept challenges, solve problems and judge their own artwork with constructive encouragement. From basics to advanced approaches, you will be introduced to a variety of drawing methods that you can adapt to your personal taste or ability. * Advanced talents welcome, to develop your skills and discover camaraderie.

Group sessions are mostly “plein-air”, weather permitting. There will be life drawing Studio sessions if weather is inclement. 4 Mondays from 7pm - 9:00pm/ $80 plus supplies (to attend any 4 sessions between the above dates). 6 Mondays from 7pm - 9:00pm/ $120 plus supplies (to attend any 6 sessions between the above dates). Our National Mail Order Department is available to help from Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM (PST) at 1-800-663-6953 ext 1. to help with any questions you have navigating our upgraded website. The online store will only be changing in look and navigation, so your information is secure as ever with us.

Please note that our website will be unavailable from 9 am to 12 pm PST on Thursday, June 27th while the upgrade is installed. The Port Moody Arts Centre invited artists of all mediums to submit for our annual Art4Life exhibition, celebrating the lifelong impact of art.

Artist Call: Art 4 Life
Art 4 Life is a five-week exhibition that includes art, activities and events geared to the young and the young at heart. The goal is to cultivate artistic growth in our community by inspiring and engaging children, while raising opportunities for active participation, discussion, cultural awareness and lessons on art appreciation. The benefits of an arts education affect every area of life and we want it to be a lifelong journey.
The Port Moody Arts Centre invites artists in all mediums to explore themes in their work that would appeal to children. The call is for a multi-artist exhibition of 2D and 3D artwork, as well as participatory features for a younger audience (less than 13 years).

Join us for the 5th annual Plein Air ("in the open air") Painting festival competition at the Kilby Historic Site in scenic Harrison Mills.

Join us for the 5th annual Plein Air Painting festival. This “In the Open Air” painting festival was a great success last year, so be sure to mark your calendars! Come and see the competitors as their paintings develop on Friday and Saturday! Then all completed paintings will be displayed for the public on Sunday. Book your reservation for the festival luncheon where the winners will be announced.

For those who are new to the event, it celebrates artwork created “en plein air,” meaning literally “in the open air.” This style of painting originated in Europe near the end of the 19th century, when artists left their studios to paint what they saw in the great outdoors! Devotees believe that painting on site, in natural light, produces luminous paintings of unparalleled quality and beauty.

During the competition, come rain or shine, up to fifty participating artists from across the Lower mainland will be painting around the Historic Site. Artists will capture breathtaking historic vistas, 1920s farm equipment, historic buildings, lush gardens & orchards, delightful farm animals, and surrounding mountains of our uniquely beautiful region.

The festival will culminate on Sunday with live entertainment and an award ceremony after the 2 pm Sunday luncheon. The sale of paintings will occur throughout the afternoon on Sunday until 3 pm.

Redefining is an upcoming exhibition by the Coast Salish artist, Kelly Cannell from the Musqueam Nation in British Columbia.

Redefining is an upcoming exhibition hosted and organized by the Burnaby Arts Council that will be presented at the Deer Lake Gallery. Redefining is by the Coast Salish artist, Kelly Cannell from the Musqueam Nation in British Columbia. The exhibition will open Friday, July 5, 2019 from 6 to 9:30 pm and will run until August 10, 2019.

Kelly was shown Coast Salish Art and culture from birth; she lives it every day among her community and with her family, including her two children. As far back as Kelly can remember is when she began to explore her calling in artistry. Her talents continue to grow in part from Kelly’s passion for travel, which brings her to countries around the world. Experiencing these places with the help of locals and their own unique culture have helped intensify her connections to the natural world. Kelly uses these experiences and connections as the foundation for all of her work.

The natural environment is one of her most treasured sources of inspiration; it is of upmost importance for Kelly Cannell to integrate all of Mother Earth’s creations within her work. In each and every piece, a story is told or a message is passed down; sometimes personal, sometimes apparent, though keeping true to Coast Salish traditions. The passion of her work embraces the ever-changing and ever-evolving contemporary Coast Salish art form. As a Coast Salish woman rising up with such a rich and knowledgeable culture Kelly has been empowered to share and hopefully inspire others to respect our surroundings and more importantly each other.

Kelly Cannell views every year as a chance to remix all of her newly collected understandings and apply them to her designs. She enthusiastically focuses towards bringing her new perspective to everyone she connects with through her work.

In her pursuit for exploring mediums, she’s followed her passion for glass to the renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington, and The Glass Furnace in Istanbul, Turkey. Kelly also continued to study part-time at Emily Carr University, most recently silk screen printing and acrylic painting.

Kelly is amassing public works throughout Vancouver including: Storm Sewer covers (with mother Susan Point), and sites at Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC), Vancouver Community College, Musqueam Community Centre, West Broadway, Westbank Towers @ Granville & 70th and a Canada 150 Light Box Mural @ Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

The Sooke Fine Arts 11-day Show and Sale draws 9,000+ art lovers from Canada, the US and abroad to the SEAPARC Leisure Complex in Sooke, BC. More than 380 works of original island art are on display in a stunning, 17,000-square-foot gallery.

Celebrating it’s 33rd anniversary in 2019, it is Vancouver Island’s longest-running juried fine art show, and the region’s premier summer arts event. The Show provides the opportunity for the finest artists from Vancouver Island and BC’s coastal islands to showcase and sell their work.
