Originally a graphic designer and print-maker, Alex’s focus has now shifted to using those skills in a more contemporary fashion. While in school at the University of the Fraser Valley, he discovered stenciling. He now uses the graffiti and cultures of places around world to fuel his art.
“Over time, my journaling has taken new forms, dimensions, and directions. My representational landscape paintings from plein air studio work have found their way back into my journals and, in turn, have evolved into new series and styles of painting. With journals and canvases I will demonstrate my creative processes for using the ‘sketchbook’ as a wonderful, endless source of inspiration and energy in developing one’s personal imagery.”

Throughout his career as a high school art teacher and into the present, the most significant impact on Jack’s painting is his dedication to artistic journaling. This is where others open up, where ideas, words and images come together. Visit Jack’s website to see his work.

“Because my paintings are quite vivid, viewers are often surprised to learn that much of my work begins on a black gessoed support – whether it is an arbutus lit by the setting sun or a desert landscape.” Join Nana at Opus Victoria as she shows how to easily achieve and maintain brilliant and dramatic colours on black gesso using opaque and transparent paint, and to embrace the idiosyncrasies of this often maligned product.

Vancouver Island artist and author, Nana Cook, worked in the arts for over twenty years before she began to paint in 1997. By 2004 her work was in the collection of the Shanghai Duolun Modern Art Museum in China. Nana infuses her paintings with dramatic colour, exciting perspective, humour, spirituality and thought provoking subjects.
