Master Detail Relationship in ADF

In real world we often need to build master detail application where we need to perform CRUD operation using Master to Detail.
We can easily obtain this in ADF. How we can obtain this and what functionalities we can provide easily are described below.

As for every ADF Web application we build two projects one is Model and another is ViewController.
We can build ADF application in both the approaches Model Design to UI Design as well as UI Design to Model Design.
We have followed Model Design to UI Design.
First we created the Business Components for this demo.

I created the Entity Objects first, then association between entities. I then built View Objects and View Links between them. I then included the View Objects in our Application Module.
We must have the view links created for creating master detail relationship.

I then created our UI in ViewController project.
I created ADF Table using master View Object for Departments.
Then I created our slave table using slave View Object Employees.
We should be able to select rows in master table. Otherwise we will not be able to change the slave table.

Now if we select any department in the master table then the employees belonging to that department will be automatically populated in slave table.

We can perform CRUD operations on both the master and slave(s). As shown in the below screenshots.

Unit Testing Of ADF Business Components Using JUNIT

In every project it is required to do proper testing, such that every requirement is met. There are many type of testings done in projects like Unit testing, Regression testing, Alpha testing etc.. From developer perspective unit testing should be done properly. In java , j2ee projects we normally use JUNIT framework. There are other frameworks also to do testing.

In ADF application also we will use JUNIT to do unit testing. To use JUNIT we need JUNIT extension for JDeveloper. For testing BC4J components we need BC4J - Junit extension for JDeveloper.

In the following application we have created one ADF model project using HR schema's Employee Table.

We have created entities, views as well as AM (named HRDemoAppModule).

First I have selected Business Components Test Suite to generate all the test fixture, test cases and test suite.
To create the suite I have selected the configuration HRDemoAppModule
.

It will create all the test cases. Now if we run the test suite we will see that all the tests were successful. Now I want to create my own test method . I want to test the data volume is correct or not.

Now as Oracle Database has 107 records. So I have added assertEquals. Do not forget to add @Test before the method under test.

The test succeeded.

In this way we can do unit testing of BC4J components such that code is bug free one.

Export Collection in ADF

In many report based or any other data related application export to excel feature is always required.

Export to excel feature can be achieved in ADF very easily, may be just in 10 minutes we can see the result excel sheet. To achieve this in this project I have first created ADF business components from HR.Employee table. Then I created one jspx page to display the employee details table. Now I want to export this tabular data in one excel named Employee.xls. want that the employee details data will be displayed under title "List Of Employees " title.

Now as export to excel will be available on some action so I added one command button here named "Export Collection"

I have inserted one exportCollectionActionListener inside the command button. This takes 5 parameters, 2 of them are mandatory.

Mandatory fields are:

ExportedId: The table or collection id you want to export

Type: The export type. As it is excel here it should be excelHTML

I have provided values for other two optional fields :

filename: I wanted that the file name should be Employee.xls

title: I wanted the title to be here "List of Employees"

Now if I run the page and click the command button "Export Collection" it will export the table data in one Excel Sheet named "Employee.xls"

The title of the sheet should be "List of Employees " as shown below.

Separate Database As Well As Table structure For Pages

It is some time required to use separate databases as well as separate table structure for separate pages. Or even in same page we can use separate databases.

In ADF it can be achieved very easily. I am discussing here the simplest one. ApplicationModule in ADF can be compared with persistence units of JPA, not exactly though as ApplicationModule has a lot of features that persistence units do not. I have compared with persistence unit as in ApplicationModule configuration also we provide the database information.

In JPA we use different persistence units to define separate databases and use those persistence units when required.

Similarly here we will be defining to different application modules for two different connections. Now we will distribute the view objects accordingly.

In the example I have used two databases MGR and HR

I have configured MGR in AppModule2 and HR in AppModule1

Now the view objects using MGR database will be configured in AppModule2 and view objects using HR database will be configured in AppModule2.

Now if you see the picture above you can see two separate data controls.

I have created two separate pages for separate data controls. untitled1.jspx uses AppModule1DataControl, untitled2.jspx uses AppModule2DataControl.

I have created one button in each of the pages for navigation between two pages, and configured the navigation in unbounded task flow.

Now if I run the pages you can see that In First Page Data from HR database is being displayed while navigating to second page through the button, displays data from MGR database.

So you can easily achieve this using two different application modules for different databases.

This feature can be achieved by different methods like using Factory Classes, setting JDBC_DS_NAME etc..

But I wanted to use the simplest one.

File Download In ADF

It is common requirement in many projects to have file download facility.
File download facility can be achieved by many means, but in 11g + versions we have one very good component
to handle file download facility very quickly.

In 11g + versions we have one listener component called fileDownloadActionListener. Which can be triggered from any command related components like commandButton , commandLink etc.

It has three parameters filename, contentType, method.

filename : It is used to display the file name in response

method: The method will be present in managed bean. It is used to handle the file download related activities. Signature of this method is

contentType: It is used to specify the content type.(like it is word document or pdf document etc.)

In the below example I have used fileDownloadActionListener with commandLink.

Setting AM Parameters at Server Startup

It is always possible to set the am p[arameters like jbo.ampool.initpoolsize , jbo.dofailover etc while starting a weblogic server. It will be applicable for all the applications deployed in the server. To do this we must set the environ ment variable without tampering the default setDomainEnv.cmd or startWebLogic.cmd file.

To do this I have created one custom script

For my case the domain's bean location is D:\Oracle\Middleware\user_projects\domains\LoanDeliveryDomain\bin

My script looks like below

ADF Popup

Like any web application it is required to show pop up window in certain cases in ADF also. In ADF it can be shown in many ways. Like we can show popup using javascript, using taskflow using pop up component etc. Here I have discussed ADF's popup component for showing the pop up, the simplest one I think. To show popup I first made one web application with one test page.

I have added one command button. I will show the popup for buton action.

I have added one <af:popup> component in the page as shown below in the below page. Added one dialog in that popup window.

Now I want to show the popup window on button action so I have added <af:showPopupBehavior> inside the command button component.

In show popup behavior I have added the popup id and button action.

Now if I run the page and click the button it will show the popup window.

This popup window can be shown from managed bean also.

Custom Filter/Servlet In ADF

Like any web application some time it is required to use custom filter/ servlet in ADF also. Here is the description of for my case. To use my custom filter I have created one Fusion Web application first.

Then I created my custom Filter named MyFilter.java. I have written my custom code in the overridden doFilter method of my custom filter.

I have used the below code in my doFilter method.

Here the filter is added in web.xml with filter name myCustomFilter. The screen shots are below. I want that every pages should pass through this filter. Any one can use directly <filter-mapping> also.

Now I have created one bounded task flow to design page flow from First Page to Second Page. I do not want to create the pages as page fragments. So I unselected this option.

I created the pages as viewq.jspx and view2.jspx . In view1.jspx I have added one button whoose action will redirect me to second page.

Now if I run the taskflow then I can see from the console(sysout from my Custom Filter) that it is showing time to process the requests.

The filters may be added in other ways also. This is just one example.

Pagination In ADF

Pagination is one common requirement in many projects. But in ADF 11g we have only scrollable facility available. So it becomes quiet tedious job to handle huge data.

First create one Fusion Web Application.

And create the ADF Business Components (I have used Employees Table of HR schema (Oracle XE))

Now create your page. For saving time I have created One ADF Read Only Table by dragging EmployeesView1 from data control to the page.

Now create <af:iterator> where <af:table> tag was present . remove all the table related tags

The complete code is below.

The iterator code is like below:

Now create one managed bean (TestPagebean.java here). I have created the bean in page flow scope.

Executing Particular Method Before Page Loads

Sometimes It is needed to Execute Some methods before page loads or component loads.

These can be done in many ways like:

1> Using an ADF/JSF Page Phase Listener (oracle.adf.controller.v2.lifecycle.PagePhaseListener/javax.faces.event.PhaseListener)

2> Using a page backing bean superclass which provides an onLoad( ) method

3> Using a custom Page Controller (oracle.adf.controller.v2.lifecycle.PageController)

4> Using managed bean for page

5> Using Page Def for particular page

6> Using Task Flow

and may be many more .. :)

First start with simplest one : Using managed bean

First Create one Test Fusion Application then create the testPage.jspx

I have created the backing bean (managed bean) at page creation time to save time for creating bindings needed. It does not matter if create managed bean and do not expose all the page components.

I have written my test method which should be executed before components load.

I want that the method should be executed before document loads and form loads.

So I have called the method in both the components getter method.

Now if we run the page it will be executed before the document and form loads.

I will be updating the other ways also in my blog in future.

There may be specific scenarios where other ways should be followed (like: even before the page is hit some methods should be executed).

Using jQuery in ADF Pages

JQuery is one rich AJAX library. Which is very handy and very popular library used in modern web applications.

It gives a very rich look and feel also. For detail study of JQuery you can refer the site
JQuery.

We can easily use JQuery in ADF pages also. But there is one problem regarding this is that for many ADF components we can't use components id to be used in JQuery as the ids are rendered like <id provided>::content and JQuery would not allow ":" like special characters in $("#id") statement.

So I have taken a different approach here.

First create one Fusion Web Project. In the Webcontent create one folder to put the jquery javscripts in the folder.You can download the jquery javascripts from JQuery website.

Now create one web page where to use the JQuery

Add resource tag in the page <af:resource type="javascript" source="/<directory name>/jquery-1.x.min.js"/>

Now switch to the Source view instead of design view.

and add your javascript code like below:

Creating ADF Poll

Creating ADF poll is one of the easiest thing in ADF.

Here you have to just mention the poll interval just and it will call the poll in that interval continuously.

To create ADF Poll (af:poll) just create one Fusion Web Application and Create one Fusion Web Project.

In that project create one managed bean to create the poll listener method.

For me it is CallPollBean.java.

Now create one Poll Listener method,

For me it is :

Now if you run the page you will see that the callPoll method is being called at an interval of 1 minute.

The interval is in milli second format.

In 11.1.1.4 (JDev 11g PS3) release there is one extra property timeout which is set to default 10minutes (timeout="600000 "),

you can change the timeout as per needed for infinite poll use timeout="-1"

Stop Execution Of View Object at First Load of Page

This can be done in many ways.

I am going through one simple way without creating managed bean or using task flow.

First Create the Fusion Web Application.
Then create the ADF Business Components to create Entity Object, View Object and Application Module in Model project

Now create the page to show the table data.

Now if you run the page you will see that the VO is executed on First Page Load and it is showing data in table.

To stop that first create the <VOName>ViewObjectImpl class for me it is EmployeesViewObjectImpl.java

in this class override the method

   protected void executeQueryForCollection(Object object, Object[] object2, int i)

use the below code to override.

Favicon Icon In ADF

To create Favicon Icon for Your ADF application without changing context root, you can follow the following steps.

Place the favicon.ico in your Webcontent root.

For me it is like FaviconViewController\public_html

Refresh Your ViewController project it will show favicon.ico in WebContent section as shown in picture.

Now create one jspx page that will use the favicon.ico

Right Click the af:document in structure window and enable the metaContainer facet as shown in the picture.

Inside metaContainer facet create one af:outputText as shown in picture.

Put the value of the outputText
as
<link rel='SHORTCUT ICON' href='#{facesContext.externalContext.requestContextPath}/favicon.ico'/>

set the escape property of the outputText to false.

Now run your page you will be able to see the favicon in supported browsers.

Showing Data Based on List Of Values And Bind Variables

Create one Fusion Web Application with Model and View Controller projects.

Create ADF Businesss Components.

Like below I have created,

One HRApplication is created with HRModel and HRViewController projects.

Then created the entities(Employees, Departments) from Employees and Departments tables.

Then created the updatable view objects.(EmployeesViewObject,DepartmentsViewObject).

Then created the Application Module (HRAppModule)

Now click finish to complete the Business components.

Now I should create the view criteria to create the criteria and create the bind variable to pass the selected data from list of values.

First Create the List Of Values to be displayed in criteria.

I am creating it to show employees present in one department.

To do that

First open the EmployeesViewObject.xml in "Overview" mode.

Go to the Attributes page.

Only Employees entity's attributes are being shown there.

To display the Departments entity's attribute . Go to "Entity Objects" option. Add the Departments entity object on right side.

Now come to "Attributes" section again.

Right click the down arrow beside the green add button as shown in the picture.

Choose option Add Attribute From Entity

Chhose all the Deaprtments' Attributes.

Now Select the DepartmentName attribute.

Click the Green Add Button related to List Of Values:DepartmentName as shown in picture.

Choose the List Of Values properties.

Now go to "Query" portion to create the view criteria.

Now your business components are ready

Now Go to HRViewController project.

Create one jspx page from JSF> JSF Page

Now refresh the Data Control Pane.

Drag the EmployeesViewObjectCriteria in page's center region.

Choose Query> ADF Query Panel With Table

Now create the table with suitable attributes.

You will be able to see the page with LOV.
The value selected in LOV is being passed to the Bind Variable created.

In this way List Of Values with input text can also be created.

Application Module - Optimistic Lock vs Pessimistic Lock

In Application Module the locking is by default pessimistic lock.

jbo.locking.mode is pessimistic by default.

But the practice should be optimistic locking.

How to change the locking mode.

We can easily change the locking mode by opening
"EDIT BUSINESS COMPONENT CONFIGURATION".

change the value to optimistic.

The pessimistic locking holds lock on database but optimistic does not hold lock on database.

So in case concurrent update

1> pessimistic locking - The second user for concurrent data update will stuck with error until first user saves or undo data change.
The second user will be forced to wait until first user will Save or Undo his changes in order to proceed with data commit. Another option for the second user - Undo his change in the current row and proceed with other rows editing. When the first user will close his transaction, the second one will be able to save his changes for previously locked record as well.

2> optimistic locking - The first user will not hold database lock and second user will be able to continue his work. At the same time, first user will be able to press Save button second time, and his data will be committed.

So for general optimistic locking is better to use.

By the way

There are three types of locking:
1. normal
2.optimistic
3.pessimistic

Handling Stale Data

While using ADF one internal feature of ADF model is Data Caching. So for neseted application modules sometimes it makes problems like RowInconsistentException.

To remove that we can use setClearCacheOnCommit.
By default its value is false.

But if we make it true it will clear the previous cache on every commit. So the data updated by other users always get updated.

It can be done by two ways.

1. Open the ApplicationModule.xml in source mode. and set the ClearCacheOnCommit="true"

or
2. If AppModuleImpl.java is created use the following code there.

this.getDBTransaction().setClearCacheOnCommit(true); in constructor.

This should solve the problems like Stale Data.

Use Server's Data Source In AM Instead Of Application Connection DataSource

Using Data Source instead of normal JDBC connection has lot of advantages. Major one is Data Source behaves dynamically. One can change the Data Source's Configurations also. While the deployed application will not be affected if Data Base Objects do not get altered.

But one problem I have found in industry is that how to configure different data sources in application module(Root Application Module) .

Normally for testing purpose we do not use Data Sources we use application modules jdbc connection.

To configure data sources we can choose two types of Data Sources(Based on Authentication)

1. Application
2. Container

As we are discussing here about using server's Data Source I will be going with Container based one.

To configure this I suppose I will be using "HRDataSource" as Data Source Name.

First I shall edit the Application Module Configuration to refer HRDataSource.

To do that I should follow these steps:

1. Right Click On AppliationModule.xml(MSService.xml in picture).
2. Click Configurations - It will open Manage Configurations wizard.
3. Now click on edit - and edit the DataSource as java:comp/env/jdbc/DataSourceName

Click save all

Now we have added the DataSource in AM. But if we deploy the application in server we may still get errors though jdbc/HRDataSource exists in server.

We have to configure the authentication to be of Container.

To do that we should edit the web.xml of View Controller project.

We should one Data Source Reference there of Authentication Container.

The configuration should be like below image. Data Source is of javax.sql.DataSource type.

Now if we deploy the application it should take HRDataSource for Data Base connection.

So If you need to modify the DataSource name , just modify bc4j.xcfg located in common folder and web.xml located within WEB-INF folder.

Here the Data Source is found out using context lookup.

as like below.

The Data Source can be configured by directly and only in bc4j.xcfg file only. Without mentioning any reference in web.xml

just put the jndi name of the Servers Data Source in 'Custom JDBCDataSource="jdbc/HRDataSource" />' in bc4j.xcfg file deploy it in server.

It will run as expected.

Installing Oracle JDeveloper with ADF

To install the JDeveloper you must have the JDeveloper with ADF studio for your operating system.
You can download the software from the link(Download from here).

After download is complete launch the software to install JDeveloper in your machine.

Choose to create a new middleware home. Mention the location where you want to install the software.

Click next and accept all in coming screens to install the software.

You will find that JDeveloper is installed in specified directory.

Launch installed Jdeveloper to verify the installation.

Start Voyage With ADF

ADF - Stands for Application Development Framework.
Oracle ADF mainly provides a rich commercial java framework for developing enterprise application, though it has many other features also.

License:
The Oracle Application Server licence includes a component for a licence fee for Oracle ADF. This means that all users who have purchased an Oracle Application Server licence may use Oracle ADF for free. Users who want to deploy ADF to a third-party application-server can purchase an ADF runtime licence at their local Oracle sales office. users can develop and test Oracle ADF applications free of charge declaratively within Oracle JDeveloper.
Oracle Corporation purchased Weblogic in June 2008, and thus no longer regards it as a third-party application-server, so ADF is included in every Weblogic license

Knowledge Required: To start with ADF one must have conceptual knowledge of JAVA. If not with JAVA at least concept of Object Oriented Programming is required.

Start With ADF:To start with Oracle ADF one must download latest version of JDeveloper from Oracle Technology Network. The link is http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jdev/downloads/index.html. The user should choose JDeveloper with ADF here.

The latest versions of JDeveloper come with Integrated Weblogic Server also. So the application developed with Jdeveloper can be tested here also.
