Oracle (ORCL) has quietly revealed pricing information for its long-awaited Fusion Applications, suggesting the software may now be generally available or will be soon following a six-year development process.

Fusion Applications are supposed to combine the best attributes from Oracle’s various ERP (enterprise resource planning) and CRM (customer relationship management) product lines into a next-generation suite that will be available in on-premises and cloud-based form.

The list gives pricing information on Fusion Applications modules for financials, procurement, PPM (project portfolio management), HCM (human capital management), SCM (supply chain management), CRM, PRM (partner relationship management) and GRC (governance, risk and compliance).

In many cases, it appears that Fusion Applications are priced the same as corresponding modules in Oracle’s other ERP suites. For example, Fusion Financials and E-Business Suite Financials are priced the same, at US$4,595 per application user license.

But a Fusion CRM Base license is priced at $4,910 per user, compared to $3,750 for a Siebel CRM Base license.

Meanwhile, Oracle has heavily emphasized the fact that Fusion Applications will feature pervasive BI (business intelligence) throughout the user experience, but that feature may have to be purchased separately. A number of Fusion Application categories on the price list include an entry for a “transactional business intelligence” license, priced at $2,000 per user.

Overall, an extensive pricing comparison is difficult to make, given the different names used for some of the Fusion Applications modules, as well as what appears to be a number of entirely new capabilities.

Then there’s the question of how meaningful price lists really are, given the heavy discounting that typically takes place during contract negotiations.

Customers shouldn’t bank on bargains with Fusion Applications, however, according to analyst Ray Wang , CEO of Constellation Research. “Prices are going up right now, unless the deals are competitive,” he said. “Oracle’s achieving pricing power in the market.”

Organizations using eBusiness Suite 11 have delayed upgrading to eBusiness Suite 12 as Fusion is due out this year. But Fusion is still not available and eBusiness Suite 11 goes into Extended Support in November, which will increase support fees.

Oracle representatives were asked about whether it would waiver the Extended Support fee for eBusiness Suite 11, licensing, general availability (GA) and UK pricing of Fusion.

They came back with the following:

GA is still under review but we have a very positive EAP roll out. We will provide out-of-the-box language capability for eight languages… Prices are global and available online. We have a localizable price list that reflects prices in local currencies based on appropriate exchange rates. I appreciate these statements don’t answer your questions, but it’s all we have at the moment I’m afraid!

Software maintenance revenue last year made up over 40% of Oracle’s business. It is now set to force those eBusiness Suite users who couldn’t buy Fusion, since it isn’t available, to pay extended support fees or upgrade to eBusiness Suite 12.

Here’s the kicker – they have to make a decision before they have had a chance to assess the shipping version of Fusion properly.

Chris Leone, group vice president of Oracle Fusion Application Development, said in a statement. “”All Fusion Apps are GA but under controlled availability. - We review the project to make sure that the fit is right and the customer will be successful. It is a standard Oracle program.”

About 70 Fusion Applications-related sessions were listed on the OpenWorld schedule as of Wednesday. They are largely focused on specific information about how to implement Fusion Applications, how to make them work with existing software, and real-world stories from early customers, versus the more general previews and planning guidance Oracle has delivered in the past.

Speculation about the long-delayed software’s release date has gone on for years. Fusion Applications are the result of a towering engineering effort that has combined the best attributes of Oracle’s various business software lines into a next-generation suite, replete with “pervasive” BI (business intelligence), according to the company.

Oracle quietly posted a price list for Fusion Applications to its website recently. However, the list did not address pricing for versions of Fusion sold as SaaS (software as a service), which is also expected to be a deployment option.

Deutsche Bank has published a report on Oracle Corporation (NASDAQ: ORCL) that addressed the company’s Fusion Apps suite.

In the report, Deutsche Bank reported, “Our channel checks also showed that customers are continuing to buy database, middle ware and business intelligence software, which is driving license growth at Oracle.

We believe that Oracle‘s infrastructure software is in the sweet spot of a long term cycle that is being driven by rapid creation of data and continuously greater utilization of online and mobile applications.”

The report also summarized several reasons to be bullish on Oracle’s stock, including a strong infrastructure and sales acceleration.

Deutsche Bank rated Oracle a HOLD with a price target of $30.00.

Oracle closed Thursday at $32.05.

Interesting article on Techtarhet.com.

It’s written by Patrick Gresham, an enterprise applications manager for a quick-service restaurant chain:

An excerpt:

After nearly 20 years of using Oracle Applications, we have millions of journal entries, invoices and receipts. Our purchasing and order lines date back to the early 1990s. Our system consists of an accounting flexfield with too many segments (because of the implementation of Oracle Projects) and a business model that needs to be re-engineered in anticipation of future growth.

I forgot to mention the more than 2,000 custom objects in our database. We not only want to upgrade and stay current, but we also need to undergo a modernization effort to streamline our business processes and maintain staff head count through standardization. With the goal to standardize 90 percent of our operations, we took the greenfield approach toward evaluating enterprise resource planning options.

During this journey, we met many representatives from Oracle. Through demos, we began to understand functional and technical benefits of Fusion Applications. We also gained an appreciation for what Oracle’s future holds and how we need to start retraining our staff now to embrace the opportunity. We learned that Oracle is mixing and matching features from its various applications; for example, the user interface is highly influenced by PeopleSoft. Also, the ability to make real-time decisions within Fusion General Ledger is done with a combination of Oracle’s Business Intelligence analytics software as well as Hyperion Essbase.

We received an Oracle Fusion Applications demonstration for six of the seven pillars offered as part of Fusion version 1. Key business users and information technology professionals were in attendance in each demo. Our chief information technology officer and the corporate accounting controller also attended some of these sessions. Functionality includes the ability to manage subledger closes from a single dashboard, slice and dice general ledger balances just moments after posting new entries or the social networking integration.

Staff was more excited about Fusion than Oracle Applications Release 12, particularly since we were planning a modernization effort. It was nice to have the business rallying behind Fusion, but the excitement still has to translate into business value to justify the change.

So we decided to take the next step and learn more about the Fusion Early Adopter Program. In this program, we would agree to help Oracle validate Fusion Applications before it became generally available. The benefit to our company would have been the ability to work closely with Oracle Development, start our modernization project earlier and get better deals on software pricing, since we would be willing to adopt Fusion early and solicit feedback on the product.

Oracle has quietly revealed pricing information for its long-awaited Fusion Applications, suggesting the software may now be generally available or will be soon following a six-year development process.

No formal announcement of Fusion Applications’ release has been made. An Oracle spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday on the price list, which has been posted to the company’s website.

A jury has decided that for the theft of Oracle’s intellectual property by its now shuttered TomorrowNow division, SAP must pay Oracle $1.3 billion.

This is in addition to the $120 million in attorneys’ fees SAP agreed to pay when the trial first began.

SAP, which believed that the damages amounted to about $28 million, had argued that Oracle was looking for an undeserved bonanza out of the jury, while Oracle contended the market value of licensing the IP was between $1.65 billion and $3 billion.

In a statement issued after the verdict, SAP was contrite:

We are, of course, disappointed by this verdict and will pursue all available options, including post-trial motions and appeal if necessary.

This will unfortunately be a prolonged process and we continue to hope that the matter can be resolved appropriately without more years of litigation. The mark of a leading company is the way it handles its mistakes. As stated in court, we regret the actions of TN, we have accepted liability, and have been willing to fairly compensate Oracle.

Throughout this matter, our customers, employees and partners have stood by us and, for that, we are grateful. Our focus now is looking forward, helping our customers be best run businesses, and extending our legacy of industry leadership well into the future.

We thank the jury for its diligent service through this lengthy trial and the Court for its supervision of this complex case.

Wow.

The jury verdict is below…

In an article, ZDNET’s Dennis Howlett describes the result of a Computer Economics report entitled: Go-Forward Strategies for Oracle Application Customers.

In that report, some of the key findings:

42% of customers are dissatisfied with the cost of Oracle customer service

58% are dissatisfied with the quality of customer service but only

25% expect Oracle to have a smaller share of their IT budget in the next three years while

37% cited factors such as organic growth, purchase of additional Oracle applications and standardization onto Oracle as reasons for an increase in spend in the same three year period.

The remainder indicated that spend levels would likely remain the same.

Some of the remarks are devastating although reviews are mixed. For example:

“Oracle’s help desk process can be very frustrating and time-consuming. However, Oracle’s willingness to engage development resources and other internal resources on our behalf has been impressive.”

The report notes that the longer a customer has been using Oracle, the more likely they are to be dissatisfied. Some of those same customers hit hard at Oracle.

A PeopleSoft customer of 13 years’ vintage said:

Oracle has tried to live in the past with the model that says, ‘Once you’ve hooked them, you’ve hooked them for life.’ With SaaS [Software-as-a-Service] options out there, they need to be more interested in pleasing their installed base or they will lose us, guaranteed.

In his second keynote address of the week, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison took the stage following a BMW ORACLE Racing America’s Cup highlights film. “I never get tired of watching that video,” said Ellison, who then recapped a number of significant new products before turning the spotlight on Oracle Fusion Applications.

“This week we’ve announced more new technology innovations than at any time in the history of Oracle,” said Ellison. “If you engineer hardware and software to work together, you get a much better overall system and the overall user experience is better, like the iPhone. Most industries work that way, whether you drive a Prius or my favorite commuting car, the Bugatti.”

Ellison reviewed more than a half-dozen new products, including the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, Exadata Database Machine X2-8, Oracle Linux with the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, MySQL 5.5, Oracle Solaris 11, a Java roadmap including vector 2-D and 3-D graphics, and more. “Exalogic runs everything. It’s a cloud in a box,” explained Ellison. “Exalogic is Big Iron without a big price.”

For the remainder of the keynote, Ellison then focused on Oracle Fusion Applications. “When we started in early 2005, we knew we needed to put the very best features from Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Siebel, and JD Edwards into the next generation of applications,” said Ellison.

“We combined the applications middleware team with the Oracle Fusion Middleware team, and we extended the middleware to support the applications.”

“Oracle Fusion Applications are built using industry standards-based Java middleware, and integrated with business intelligence, not just process automation,” said Ellison, outlining the key design principles. “The user experience is modern, consistent, and productive, with Web 2.0, social networking, and collaboration built in. And it’s SOA-based, to simplify integration, and SaaS-ready.”

“Oracle Fusion Applications are truly next-generation, with 100 modules available simultaneously in [calendar] Q4,” concluded Ellison, “and with general availability early next year, it’s the largest software launch in Oracle history.”

He then introduced the Oracle Fusion Applications team–Steve Miranda, senior vice president, applications development; Christopher Leone, group vice president, application strategy; and Anthony Lye, senior vice president, customer relationship management–who demonstrated four sales-focused business flows: planning, prospecting, field execution, and order fulfillment.
