CSUF’s Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi are planning an event that would involve other AS and BAP Southern California chapters. It will most likely be a barbeque/bonfire social mixer at the beach in May. Our chapter members will be invited, and the theme of the event will be “Getting Comfortable with the Professionals.”

Also, OC/LB young and emerging professionals will join forces this summer with CSUF AS and BAP for a mixer at a location to be announced soon! We would like to encourage accounting students at CSU Long Beach to get more involved with both CSUF and CalCPA.

As for campus news, our business college was recently recertified for AACSB. This accreditation is very important for schools that offer an accounting program. Also, the first week of May at CSUF will be CalCPA Week. I will be doing some major promotion as a CalCPA Campus Ambassador to encourage students to become CalCPA members.

By Thomas Bennett

I always find this time of year exciting, as we CPAs crawl out of the rock we have been living under during busy season. I find it’s a time for reflection and an opportunity to set new goals for the year ahead. This year is especially exciting for me as I take on the role of chapter president. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve in this capacity and am looking forward to a great year. I would like to thank Kevin Hartley for his service as president this past year, and acknowledge the past presidents, officers and directors whose vision and foresight set the stage for what the chapter is today. I hope to continue the many valuable programs and events engineered by my predecessors, and to also begin some new ones. Fortunately, I am not alone and am very excited to serve alongside a strong roster of officers and directors.

Without question, my favorite part about being involved with this great organization over the past few years has been the people. Connecting with the professional community is one of the best benefits of CalCPA membership.

My goal is to expand the networking aspects of the chapter and hold premier events that bring real value to members. We are working on such an event, our ABC (attorney, bank, CPA) mixer, which will be held Aug. 9 at Angel Stadium, in the prestigious Diamond Club. The ABC Committee, chaired by John Misuraca, has been working tirelessly to ensure that this event is a huge success. The unique venue and amazing activities, including guided tours of the dugouts and field, will bring networking to a whole new level. But best of all, it will be just flat-out FUN.

We are also looking to provide premier networking opportunities for our young and emerging professionals.

My first involvement with CalCPA was at a YEP event, so I hold this group very close to my heart. Helping the newest generation of CPAs develop and expand their careers is a critical role of CalCPA, and I want the chapter to lead the way. As a former chapter YEP chair, I am pleased to pass the baton to a newly formed committee chaired by Matt Correa. The YEP Committee is an eager and dedicated group of individuals who have already put together a great line up of events for 2012.

I urge everyone to encourage colleagues and other professionals to get involved with the chapter. Attend an event, interest group function or board meeting. One of our chapter’s biggest challenges has been member participation. I genuinely believe that once people attend an event, they will see the benefit of their membership. Sometimes it’s as easy as a personal invitation. It’s up to us as chapter leaders to design events that people want to attend—and everyone can help with spreading the word.

In closing, I would again like to extend my gratitude that you have placed your confidence in me as chapter president, and I hope to make the chapter proud.

By Kevin Hartley

This has been a very good year for CalCPA—and for our chapter. CalCPA is rapidly reaching its membership goal of 40,000 and our chapter continues to grow as well and remains the second-largest chapter in the state. We are making great strides to increase our student membership, which is free. Educator membership also is free.

The chapter has had some very successful events during the year. The 25th Annual Fall Seminar Series was a success and featured entertaining speakers who delivered 21 CPE credits to more than 100 attendees! Thanks again our chapter sponsor chair, Karen Connair, for securing our generous sponsors: National Processing Company, Thomson Reuters, Tredway Lumsdaine & Doyle, plus Century Group and Wealth Management Network, who hosted incredible pre-class cocktail receptions. I would like to extend my personal thanks to Thomas Bennett for his efforts in securing the speakers for the series, to the speakers themselves for volunteering their time and knowledge, and to chapter program associate Nancy Wilson for taking care of arrangements for the speakers and facilities. Most of all, we could not have done it without all the OC/LB CPAs who choose the Fall Seminar Series each year to satisfy their CPE requirements. As a result of these efforts, the Series netted $19,000 for our scholarship fund. A very successful venture!

The 13th Annual Economic Forecast also was a great success. Dr. Adibi always puts on a great presentation and we are fortunate to continue our relationship with him. I would like to thank Allen Goh and Nancy Wilson for their efforts in putting together the presentation. As a result of their efforts, we were able to net a profit from the event for our scholarship fund. As I mentioned in an earlier message, the ability to raise funds and award scholarships is the most rewarding part of my involvement with the chapter, and it was great to see this event return to profitability to help in this cause. Our scholarship committee has been receiving applications for this year and the scholarships will be awarded at our yearly OC Scholarship Reception, to be held in July.

We now have a chapter YEP Committee that has put together some great YEP events, including a networking event June 13 at Newport Beach Winery and Vineyards, Football Night at Dave and Busters and a holiday cruise of Newport harbor. In addition to our many continuing interest groups, we now have a Long Beach Discussion Group that serves CPAs in that area, and a new Tax Interest Group starting in May. One of the primary goals I set for the chapter for this year was to increase the number of members that actively attend chapter or society events. We still have a long way to go in this regard, however these new interest and discussion groups, as well some exciting upcoming events that we have planned, are strides in the right direction.

Please be sure to join us May 8 at our fabulous Installation of Officers and Networking Event, 6-9 p.m. at Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach. This is always a great event, and this is where I will officially pass the baton to the capable hands of Thomas Bennett, who will serve as your president for the next year. And mark your calendars for our ABC Night, Aug. 9, 6-9 p.m., at Angel Stadium’s Diamond Lounge. We are excited about this new event for our chapter and hope that it’s the beginning of a new tradition!
