We at CalVet can find no better way to express the true meaning of Memorial Day than by quoting the words Abraham Lincoln wrote in a letter to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, a widow living in Boston to express his condolences for the death of her sons.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Many of us will visit cemeteries and memorials and attend parades this Memorial Day.

Regardless of what you do, we ask that you take a minute to participate in the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. as an act of national unity with other Americans, whether alone or with family and friends.

Let’s honor those who died in service to the United States.

A listing of Memorial Day events throughout the state is available online at www.calvet.ca.gov to assist you in finding an event near you.

The following information was released by Eric K. Shinseki, the U.S. Secretary of Veteran’s Affairs.

Memorial Day, one of America’s most venerated national holidays, is set aside so that we might reflect on the honor and sacrifice of those who courageously gave their lives to safeguard us and our way of life. They are forever young in our memories.

Throughout our nearly 237-year history as a democracy, time and again, Americans in uniform have had to secure the heritage of freedom and liberty for us and for the oppressed in other lands, paying a steep price in blood and suffering.

The past decade has provided reminder enough of the devotion, loyalty, and determination of the magnificent men and women who serve in our military formations. “In harm’s way” has become the cliché for those deployed on mission without really capturing the danger, stress, worry, fear, and love that keeps military families riveted to each breaking overseas news bulletin. There are no clichés for discussing the undiscussable.

As we, in the Department of Veterans Affairs, go about our duties of providing America’s living Veterans the care, benefits, and services they have earned, let us also remember the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. Their powerful legacy surrounds us each and every day all across this Nation – when we gather openly to speak our minds freely. It is found in our churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples, where worship is freely exercised. It is evident in the openness of our media, where information is shared without fear of reprisal. It is embedded in our polling places, where ballots freely cast determine who will govern this great land.

In caring for those “who [have] borne the battle,” we come to understand the consequences of war. Let us remember the families of our Fallen. And with our prayers for peace, let us also pray for the Almighty’s continued blessings on this great country, for which so many laid down their lives.

Flanders Fields Memorial Poppy

According to The Great War, 1914-1919, the red poppy as a symbol of remembrance of the terrible cost of war grew from a famous poem by Joen McCrae, a Canadian soldier during World War I.

The poem begins:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

The image of the delicate red flower growing amid gravestones was picked up by Moina Belle Michael, then working at the YMCA Overseas War Secretaries’ headquarters in New York.

Moina took up the challenge of the poem’s last verse:

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

She began a personal campaign to make the red poppy a nationally recognized emblem.

In 1920, the American Legion joined her cause.

At the same American Legion convention that formally adopted the red poppy, a French woman named Anna E. Guérin decided to use the sale of artificial red poppies to raise money to help children orphaned by World War I.

In 1921, the use of red poppies in conjunction with war memorials or fundraising appeared in Canada, Great Britain and Australia.

By 1923, the American Legion was selling poppies to raise funds. The Legion was joined in 1924 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Sale of artificial poppies to raise funds to support veterans continues to this day.
