Orange County Butterfly Sightings and News:
Senna (Cloudless) Sulphurs and Cabbage Whites continued to fly into December and
even January as observed on warm sunny days in Lakewood, California, along with an occasional Monarch. Several Gulf
Frittilaries were also observed in this area especially around Passion Vine, its larva host and a butterfly which seems to fly
nearly year-around. Most of our swallowtail species had finished their final flights by early November. Three Echo (Spring
Azures) Blues and a Common Gray Hairstreak were observed hilltopping on Sugarloaf Peak at an Elevation of 3227’ off the
San Juan Trail in the Santa Ana Mountains on Jan 2, 2012 on a very warm day which is early for these species.

NABA Orange County's Butterfly Field Trip to Caspers Regional Wilderness Park, Orange County - Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Anyone interested in learning more about our local native butterflies is invited to join.

Meet at 9:00 a.m. at Caspers Park in the parking area just inside entrance Kiosk. Day parking fee required. We will walk 2-3 miles along the trail overlooking San Juan Creek from 9:00 am. to 12:30 a.m. After the hike, we will have lunch at Nature Center and observe the butterflies within the Butterfly Gardens around the Nature Center.

~~February 20, 2010~~ Changed to February 21, 2010 Due to the Rain - Anza Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego Co., CA. For a last minute update contact Gary at 949-218-7575
Meet at Wendy’s Restaurant at the NW corner of I-5 and Alicia Parkway Intersection, Laguna Hills, CA at 7:00 a.m. sharp. All day and dinner in Julian or other place on way back.

March 20, 2010 - Caspers Regional Wilderness Park, Orange Co. CA.
Meet at 9:00 a..m. at Caspers Park in the parking area just inside entrance Kiosk. Day fee required. We will walk 2-3 miles along a trail overlooking San Juan Creek from 9:00 am. to 12:30 a.m. then lunch at Nature Center and to observe butterflies within the Butterfly Gardens around the Nature Center.

April 18 2010 - Donna O’Neil Land Conservancy, Rancho Mission Viejo, Orange County, CA
We will walk a moderately strenuous ridgeline within a private 1,200 acre nature preserve in southern Orange County where many uncommon Orange County butterflies can be seen. The reserve is located off private Cristiantos Rd. several miles east of San Juan Capistrano, CA. Meet at Campo Amantes entrance gate ay Hwy 74 (Ortega Hwy). $5 dollar fee person to cover docent and other expenses. Coastal Sage Scrub and Southern Oak Woodland plant communities are featured here.

May 22, 2010 - NABA will join the SAMNHA (The Santa Ana Mountains Natural History Association) Group on an all day Car/Truck Tour lead by Lee Shoemaker and Larry Shaw. This all day excursion will take us to explore the Santa Ana Mountains on rugged dirt forest roads to observe the local wildlife fauna.. This is an all day affair. Bring water and lunch. No restrooms. Those wishing to drive should bring a reliable sturdy vehicle and be willing to carpool to reduce total amount of vehicles which makes for a better trip. Reservations required and taken after April 1, 2010. Limited to 15 vehicles. Route to be determined.

June 5, 2010 - Blue Jay Campground, off of North Main Divide Rd. in the Cleveland
National Forest, Santa Ana Mtns., Orange Co. CA. We will look for butterflies within the meadows and forest roads near Blue Jay Campground. We will meet at Bravo Burgers Restaurant at 8:00 a.m.. which is in a shopping center off the south side of Ortega Highway (Hwy. 74) about 1/8 mile east of I-5 Freeway, in the City of San Juan Capistrano, Orange Co. CA .

June 27, 2010 - Annual NABA butterfly counts within Riley and O’Neil Regional Wilderness
Parks located in Coto De Caza and Trabuco Canyon, Orange County, respectfully. We will conduct two three hour counts on easy trails at these two Orange County Parks. Meeting time to be announced.

August 21, 2010 - Mugu State Park
All day excursion to explore Point Mugu State Park.. We will walk up the main canyon bottom and then return to the beach parking lot for a late lunch, barbecue, or early dinner. Leave Long Beach area at 7: 00 A.M.

OC NABA Founder - Don Mitchell

The butterfly community lost one it's greats, Don Mitchell, Founder of the Orange County Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association.

November 17, 1936 - August 16, 2009

Don Edward Mitchell passed away at University Of California Irvine Hospital due to complications from cancer.

He was a lover of butterflies, traveled the world, was a gifted writer, avid gourmet cook, gourmand eater, reader of all things, collector of knowledge and lover of life.

We will miss you Don, now go be with the butterflies.
